Just returned from a 3 night stay at Knock School. It is a beautifully maintained site. The facilities had their charms and although they were old (the loo's date from the school's original use) they were absolutely immaculate and fully functioning with the addition of little water heaters for really hot water for washing. The shower is a very reasonable 10p for about 4 minutes, and was sparklingly clean.

The tent field is just big enough for 4 large pitches and is hidden from the (very quiet) road by a wall which helps to keep the wind down. There is room for about 10 caravans on the adjacent field too.

If you get the chance, buy one of Granny's jams, sold by Pauline. I recommend the rhubarb and ginger! A big plus for me was the clarity of the night sky. Tou don't need to go all the way to the forests for the dark skies.

Don't go to this site if you are wanting a bustling, entertainment filled trip, you will be disappointed. It was serene and peaceful, far from the madding crowd, no mobile signal and no screaming, marauding children and no big supermarkets.

Perfect. (However, if you are planning on shopping when you get there, don't! The nearest full Sainsbury's is in Newton Stewart and there is Morrisons in Stranraer, otherwise it's local londis type shops which we found to be quite expensive)

En route from England, we stopped at Devil's Porridge (an exhibition about munitions works near Gretna in the WW's) and Threave Castle. Both were interesting and worth the tiny admission charges.

Nearer Knock School, we visited the animal park which seemed to be little more than a family menagerie opened to the passing public. The donkeys were a firm favourite.

St Ninian's cave is interesting and seems to serve as a sort of shrine to the dead. It's a lovely walk and long, shelving pebble beach on the way.

A drive up to the Mull of Galloway is long but worth it, and there is a tiny, enclosed bay just before the mull which we thought was just about paradise.

Castle St John in Stranraer is interesting too, as long as you don't mind a long flight of spiral stairs.

All in all I think I would definitely visit again.

Fairly pleasant situation with mixture of tents and caravans in same field although access to site narrow and angled.

Inadequate electrical hook-ups which tripped twice during our 4 day stay, as it did with others. Owners unavailable to resolve problem which was ultimately sorted out by caravanners.

No chemical waste disposal on site, which I felt may be insufficient. One shower with meter.

Otherwise site afforded good access to Wigtownshire villages and ports, with beaches and golf course on doorstep.

Area is well worth a visit and we found a delicious meal in The Clansmen restaurant in delightful Port William.

This is a clean and well maintained site, the owner is very friendly and helpful. We stayed for a couple of nights and it was so peaceful as it is a small site. The beach is a 15min walk down the hill which is suitable for swimming or fishing.

There is a golf course down the hill towards the beach for those who enjoy a round or two. If you are looking for and action packed break this is not for you its for those who enjoy great views and peaceful surrounding

We originally booked for 2 nights but liked the site so much we extended our stay to 5 nights. Although it was the summer school holiday the site was ideal for anyone wanting a peaceful stay. The facilities were clean and soap was provided. There was one shower but as this is a small site we did not have to queue. The only down side was that the washing up point only had cold water and it was not covered as we had good weather this was not a problem. The skies were very dark and although this was a summer stay it was a delight to look at the stars.

There is no shop on site but there are 2 shops at Port William, a short drive away which had everything we needed.

Although we did not use it we were told by fellow campers that the nearby golf clubhouse did reasonably priced meals.

The camp site is on a bus route so it is possible to do linear walks.

If you need to put your ice packs in the freezer the site owner Pauline is more than willing to do this for you.

We would definitely like to return.

I love this site. Discovered it last year and must've been back about a dozen times by now. It has become a proper bolthole for us.

It is a special site where you are made to feel like guests in the owners' garden. They could not be more helpful and we always feel welcome.

Facilities although basic are always clean and well maintained and not without their own unique charm - it was a village school in a previous incarnation. Although the site is next to the road it is very quiet - think what roads must have been like 50 years ago and you'll get the idea!

For this reason I would certainly recommend the area if you want to do some cycling on flattish traffic free roads - a cycling paradise! Nearby are a couple of spectacular beaches which are regular attractions when we visit.

If you are a golfer the local course is minutes walk away and looks a cracker (I played when I was younger). At night the skies become alive with stars being in the Galloway dark skies area - it was particularly spectacular during last year's meteor showers!

The peninsula also seems to command its own microclimate so the weather is often a lot better than the mainland.

I have camped in numerous sites in Britain and keep returning to this site which is testament to its charm - all in all a very special place!

This is a charming little campsite, very pleasant owners who are keen to keep the site clean & tidy.

Toilet block & showers extremely clean if rather antiquated! Plenty of hot water. Shower great. Dishwashing in open air with no shelter.

Only space for a few tents. Lovely views from the caravan pitches. Great site for looking around that part of Scotland. We went to Whithorn and the North & South Rhins.

No playing area for children, great for little ones and adults.

Proper old-fashioned camping in the style of Enid Blyton. We thought it was fab!

We had a really enjoyable and relaxing week’s holiday at Knock School Caravan Park. The site is reasonably priced, pleasantly quiet, dog-friendly, and the facilities are clean and tidy.

The site is located in a very attractive rural landscape which is ideal for easy access to various beaches and other visitor attractions (e. G. St. Ninian’s Chapel and Cave, St. Medan’s Golf Course, Barsalloch Fort, Wigtown, Port William etc).

There’s also plenty of wildlife to see in the area (we spotted kestrels, buzzards, oyster catchers and roe deer).

We would have no problem recommending it!

Found site on ukcampsite.Co.Uk we booked just for the weekend but decided to stay 10 days. Lovely quiet site, minimal facilities but more that adequate. Electric to all pitches. Only a mile for a quiet coved beach and golf course. Ideal if you want a quiet get away. Brilliant for star gazing having dark sky status in the area. Not all pitches are level but site have blocks to use. Site is very well maintained and has pretty flower beds.

This is our 2nd visit to Knockschool Camping and Caravanning Park in Monreith and we had the most wonderful weather which allowed numerous visits to historic places of interest and of course the Monreith Sands Beach for a wonderful dip in the hot weather. Hubby grew up visiting Monreith with his parents and as a result we are hoping to continue the tradition and visit on a regular basis. We booked last minute on this occasion and thankfully accommodated to our relief! Our visit was greeted with a big warm smile and welcome (and of course were able to buy a few pots of Gran's amazing jam which we later enjoyed with baguettes or hot toast and hot chocolate - just delicious!).

We were shown to our tenting pitch and set up our 6 man tent to start enjoying our holiday break. The site is very well maintained, beautiful lay out. Toilets, showers etc although basic are very clean and tidy. We were able to take our jack russell again with us who also enjoyed his time there immensely. Pauline, hubby and son were wonderful hosts and were always willing to help if needed. We had a great laugh and relaxed completely.

We hope to return next year and if possible stable our horses nearby - either way this is a wonderful site, you are left in peace to enjoy your holiday and the hosts are always around to help if needed. View is fantastic - what more can you ask for.

We have just spent 2 weeks at this site during the wettest August ever registered in Dumfires and Galloway and because of the site and its owners we had a wonderful time!

The site is clean, tidy and beautifully presented. Pauline and John (the owners) put a lot of time and effort into ensuring their site and facilities are of the highest standard. The toilets, shower and washing up facilities are basic but immaculate. They are cleaned regularly throughout the day.

We initially had some misgivings about the proximity to the road which seemed to be very busy, however this turned out to be the local farmers making the most of a weather window and although there were still busy times on the road it wasn't continuous noise.

The surrounding area is well worth visiting with everything you could ask for on a family holiday - walks, sandy beaches, cycling, golf course and lots of local history.

Pauline and John are extremely friendly and very helpful. They were always around for a chat and to offer ideas of places to visit.

Our 11 year old son said it was the 'Best site he'd ever stayed on' (and he's stayed on a few now!) and our 19 month old just loved the freedom of being able to run up and down the field safely(the camping field being separated from the road by a wall).

This is definitely a site we will be recommending to others and will return to ourselves.
