A different sort of C&CC site, and one I'll return to again.

It is a cross between the usual open field type of C&CC site and a heavily wooded Forest Holidays site (like Setthorns, New Forest). There are different pitch sizes all around the site, some only accessible to tents, some hidden away and some in large clearings - I was on one of the latter, with pitches around the outside and EHU.

There were not too many others on site during the few days I was there early October - I went for a walk through the site, which is all wooded, and along the lanes outside one morning and met no-one.

The pitches are hard-packed soil/sand with some grass on top in places, but I didn't test how easy it would be to get my utility tent pegs in. A lot of leaves and stuff were falling from the trees and it was a constant battle to keep the sun canopy and windscreen clear and to avoid walking dirt and debris into the van.

There is a small hill in the middle of the site, also heavily wooded, with a bench and nice view - I am sure the squirrels were deliberately dropping acorns at me.

Mobile reception varies a lot across the site - my pitch was poor but only about 20 metres away it was fine (O2 voice & 3G).

The warden was very friendly, cycling ahead when I arrived and allowing me to pick from a few pitches (one advantage of turning up late season). The upper/main toilet/shower block also houses a dishwashing room and laundry room with a single washing machine and tumble dryer.

The gents block has 3 showers, at least one cubicle with sink and plenty of toilets; it is also heated. Outside are fresh and waste water points, which were the nearest ones to my pitch about a minute walk away. There is a smaller toilet block near reception and water points throughout the site.

The site is, unsurprisingly, very dark at night and I had the pleasure of hearing my first live 'twit.Twooooo' from a couple of owls in the trees nearby, which added to the atmosphere of being in the middle of nowhere. I could have done without the noise of what were presumably more acorns hitting the roof as the wind picked up. There was also quite a lot of aircraft noise until late, particularly helicopters.

Sainsbury and Tesco can be found at Pulborough about 10 miles away but I did not get the chance to explore the area too much this time. The site is a short drive off the A285 just south of Petwold but be careful when you get close to it because the access road was not that clearly marked when I was there and was very rutted and waterlogged. The A285 also takes you down to Chichester and the south coast and is a good road, with a few twisty bits.

If you like peace and quiet you would like this site during the off peak times because it is off the beaten track, but I guess that in the summer it is a lot busier due to all of the outdoor pursuits you could do while based there in the middle of the South Downs.

Just a few additions to the reviews below.

We can recommend both The Foresters Arms (20 minutes walk) and The White Horse (30 minutes walk) in this very spread-out, pretty village. There is also an excellent shop for basics and news etc (just before you get to The Foresters Arms). Take a torch if walking by night. There is a pedestrian back-entrance to the site which cuts off a corner.

There is aslo a lovely walk across country to The Cricketers in Ducton (about a 50 minute stroll) where we had lunch.

Cycling in the area is a pleasure.

We used it as a base to visit the Goodwood Revival for which it is pretty convenient.

Orange 2G (only) worked on our plot.

Great site if you want a woodland camping experience; tents are tucked in between trees, though this can limit the amount of pitches for large tents. We tried to book in aug, but couldn't get a pitch.

In the middle of the site is a hill, if you walk up the top, you come to a lovely view (you don't know it's there until you explore). It's a great environment for kids to run wild in the woods. At night it is pitch black, a torch is essential.

We were at the bottom edge of the site, furthest away from the toilets - bit of a trek at night as you really need to keep to the path in the dark - though in a way it adds to the experience! The facilities seemed good, though I didn't try the showers.

Although the site itself is quiet, and our pitch was nice and secluded, we were surprised to find that we were only about 30ft from the road (arrived at dusk, so at first thought we just had woodland behind us), and there is no fence, so be careful if you have young children and are in this part of the site.

In fact, the road was the only real negative about this site - it appears to be just a quiet B road servicing a couple of small villages, but for some reason there was constant traffic the sat night we were there and that kept me awake (wondering where all the cars were coming from!). I don't think you would hear the road if you were over near the toilet block side of the site.

If we ever become members of the CCC, I would like to return to this site.

We stayed at this unique site for three nights. Pitches are individually located in a clearing of the forest but within reasonable distance of other pitches for a good communal feel. The warden was very helpful with some electrical problems we had. Our children loved the site, exploring through the trees. On our first night we had the most torrential downpour that persisted through the night. In the morning the ground had drained in a way I could never have imagined. Superb toilet and shower blocks. Great site, we will certainly return.

We arrived to a warm welcome and shown to our pitch, which we were really impressed with our pitch which was over hung by chestnut trees and really seemed secluded from everyone else. The ground had no grass and very sandy, but as we had previously read the reviews we went prepared with a broom.

There were only three ladies showers and three mens which I thought would be a problem, but we never had to queue and they were very clean, must admit it was really dark, which only added to the charm of the place.

Our two boys loved playing in the woods and looking for wildlife, we went for lovely bike rides and found a wonderful pub in Duncton called the Foresters open all day which served lovely home cooked food and had a lovely garden.

We will definitely return. But we were also woken at 3 a.M by screaming baby who obviously wasn't impressed with camping!

Well, what can I say about this site. We've just returned from 10 nights in our Outwell Indiana 8 tent at Graffham and think it's the best site we've ever camped on.

We totalled 2 adults and two children (11 and 9) but also asked if we could be pitched near to our camping buddies who are a family of two adults and 3 kids. When we arrived there we were shown to our pitches which were in a secluded clearing of about 6 tents all separated by trees. Right next to each other!

There is a main shower block which was a couple of minutes walk away, but there was a toilet block closer to our pitches. I would recommend taking a good torch as the path/lane to the toilet block is very dark at night. It all added to the adventure

We were amazed during our first evening to see bats circling above us, what amazing creatures they are! And then we were amazed to hear at least 3 owls calling during the night.

At the very heart of the site is a tumulus on top of a wooded hill. This makes for a fantastic walk, and the kids were really happy to find two rope swings up there. In fact they hardly spent any time around the tent - they were always on the rope swings or building dens in the trees.

The White Horse pub in Graffham is lovely, and you can cycle from the site up onto the south downs way. There are also numerous geocaches nearby (we really enjoyed walking from the site to 'Jabberwocky' and 'Sussex Amble'.

Overall we all had a fantastic time, especially as we all love nature (there's an abundance of shield bugs) and being outdoors. Everything was excellent except for the route to the toilets needing a bit more lighting.

I would thoroughly recommend this site to anyone.

We've used this lovely site many times over the years as it's our favourite site. We like the isolation of the individual pitches hidden in the trees. Not for everyone perhaps but just right for us. Staff have always been very helpful and friendly and go out of their way to help anyone in difficulties. Limited number of toilets/showers but as we are early risers we often had them to ourselves. Always very clean.

Despite our many visits we still find new places to visit in the area.

Stayed here for 8 nights. As already said by others the site is very sandy and you will definitely need a ground sheet in your awning if you don't want your van filthy, especially after rain.

There are only 3 male showers for 90 pitches, had to queue some days. Also only 4 male toilet cubicles (2 each in separate locations), again not enough.

The ban on Charcoal barbecues is overkill. My freestanding one is just as stable as a gas one and also has a fixed wire mesh to prevent spills. Why don’t they have barbecue areas if they want to ban people from using theirs?

Pitches were ok and secluded. Shop was fairly typical with most basics. The staff were helpful and friendly. Been to a few sites now.

We stayed at Graffham for 2 nights (Fri/Sat) in early August 2010. We pain £67 for 3 adults (non- c/c club members). We booked in advance as we were a group of 6 staying in 2 tents, but they could not fit us in together so we were camped in different areas of the site.

The site seems to be made up of lots of little 'private' areas to pitch your tent, we were very isolated from other visitors in a clearing surrounded by trees and shrubs. There is absolutely no grass on the site and the soil is very sandy for a few inches, then is rocks and tree roots! Our tent pegs became buried under sand after a short shower and had to be hooked out with a peg when we were packing up. There did not seem to be a separate 'family' area, and we were shouted at by a couple whose baby woke up when we arrived back from the pub at 10:30pm one night (their baby then proceeded to wake half the campsite up at 3am).

The toilet block was a short walk down a hill covered with exposed tree roots - we saw two people trip over these on our visits to the block. The place would benefit from a few low level lights to guide people in the dark. The loos were clean and always had loo roll, we had to queue for the (3) showers on both mornings in the ladies. There is no plug socket in the block, but they did have a coin op hair dryer for 20p a go.

The shop contained what would get you out of trouble - we needed gas one night.

The pub down the road (The White Horse) was excellent - we had pre-booked for the 6 of us, but the food was great and the staff friendly.

We have just returned from Graffham after spending 4 nights there. It is a wonderful site, a little gem, with the pitches right in amongst the trees. Our pitch was close to the shower block but looking out from the awning we could not see another unit. The facilities were good and always kept clean and fresh. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Every morning we had our breakfast out in the awning and listed to the woodpecker hard at work searching for food.

The only downside was the poor state of the drive from the road to the campsite which had more potholes than sound surface.

All in all a very good site though and we will return there.
