The wife and I stay here most weekends, its only 13 miles from home but seems a million miles away.
For £12 per night inc EHU plus £2 for awning you can't grumble and the staff are great. Two sets of toilets, plus showers, one block 50p for shower the other 20p.
There are three places camp: top field is nice but limited views, then a little compound adults only, then the main field with lots of EHU and water and a small toilet block.
There is a shop on site that sell almost everything. What a great place credit to the owners

We stayed on this site for 3 nights over the bank holiday weekend. We really liked this site but a couple of things let it down. First of all, the electric on our caravan kept tripping. My husband had to constantly go out in the wind and rain to switch it back on. We only had the kettle on too. We had to run the heating off the battery to stop it tripping. It was really frustrating that it just kept going off. The electric for the whole site went off on Saturday so everyone was left without electric. My husband went to the office and was told they were waiting for someone to come out to repair it. It didn't come back on until the next afternoon though.
The showers were clean and you had to buy a token for 50p which lasted about 20 minutes (plenty of time for me and my 2 toddlers to have a shower) The next night we tried the showers at the other end of the site but these were freezing cold. The water was hot for a minute or 2 and then it went luke warm. My friend and her little girls used it after us and she said it was freezing cold by then. You had to pay to wash your hands after using the toilet too which I think it a bit cheeky.
Apart from the above negatives, we really liked everything else. The site was well drained in rain and there is plenty of space for the kids to run around and play safely. The owners were friendly and helpful. I would use this site again but I think the electric could do with being looked at as it's only 6 amp.

We booked in for 1 night right at the start of the season (in fact they hadn't opened the site to tents yet) to check our equipment and tent as we don't have a large enough garden. We had a lovely welcome and were shown to our pitch for the night.
We had been put up on the balcony (in the caravan / motorhome part), which is a raised bit of land cut into the hillside. Ideal size for our tent and nice and flat. Boy did we need the rock pegs we had bought with us as the ground was incredibly hard and rocky. However it was well drained and sheltered.
We know how close it is to the M62 but found we really really had to strain to hear traffic noise, all we could hear was bird song.
The shop is well stocked, but is not open all the time, so take note of opening times.
The facilities were clean and dry, however you had to pay 20p for hot water to wash up in the outside facilities, 10p for hot water to wash your hands in the toilet and 20p for a shower. We didn't mind this as the water was piping hot and we figured that we had EHU for the night for £12 so an additional £1 or so for guaranteed hot water wasn't too bad.
Our son isn't into playgrounds, instead he is happy to keep himself entertained so lack of play areas really didn't bother us. However other people's children running close to the tent and playing football against it resulted in some sharp words.
We will definitely use this site again, handy to have on our doorstep, just 15-20 minutes away, but seemed to be a world away. A real little gem. We didn't explore Littleborough on this occasion, as we have been many a time before, but it is a pleasant enough. There are supermarkets close by if you need anything.

I'd read the reviews of this site and decided to try it as a group meet for us and friends in motorhomes and caravan. It was excellent- a little gem of a site. To start with, it wasn't so far from home and easy to get to. £12 a night with hook up was very fair though I have to say we didn't use the showers.Got them in the van and it's warmer than walking out in the cold. The walk round the lake was lovely and the evening sunshine gave it a magical quality. The setting is beautiful and we couldn't believe that the motorway was so close- it was hidden from view.
The visitor centre near the lake was interesting and our friends did a 3 mile walk up the valley while some of us walked into Littleborough where the railway station is to get information for next time we come! Littleborough has shops, pubs, and a big co-op. One friend, who nobly cycled to get the newspapers on Saturday found that it was downhill to Littleborough and quite a haul back up to the site. We weren't that impressed with Littleborough but very impressed with the site.
The surrounding scenery is wonderful and much prettier than I'd expected.
We ate at the Wine Press ( booked the day before) and were very pleased with the food and service. The staff at the site were very helpful, the loos clean and tidy and all in all, we had a great weekend. We will be going back.

We stayed at Hollingworth for one night, and I am pleased to say we had a great time. Myself, my husband and two daughters aged 12 & 8, found lots of nice walks and places to eat around the lake.
The site itself is very clean, has all amenities, water tap, chemical and waste disposal, toilets, shop on site and lots of EHU's. My husband tried the showers and they cost 50p for a token, but he said they got nice and hot. It is £12 per night, I think you pay extra if you take a dog.
The site is lovely and quiet and has great views of fields and countryside. We enjoyed it that much we are hoping to go back this weekend (depending on work).
We only live 30 mins down the road, but it felt like we were miles away.

Came here for the weekend with friends. Lovely sight, flat field, plenty of EHU's. Owners very friendly, and loved the sight. The only bug bear was the dogs that are let to roam and drop little parcels outside your tent or caravan. Thought they had to be on a lead all the time?. Their owners didn't think so. Didn't care.
It was also noisy with kids screaming and not being controlled by parents. A little bit of consideration by the parents and teaching children not to shout and scream in the early morning would be great. All in all, loved it and we will go back. Walk around the lake is lovely, no real shops close by but site shop good. Rate site a definite 9/10.

Had a 2 night stay at this lovely campsite, only a 10 min walk to Hollingworth Lake, where you can walk all the way round it with shops and pubs on the way. Very friendly site and lovely surrounding scenic views. We were in our campervan 'Renee' with our travelling buddies in a tent and caravan. Shop on site that catered for any items you might just forget on your travels. Toilets very basic (could have done with a small mirror and soap dispenser) but clean. The only downside (which is very small) is that dogs were supposed to be on leads, and some of them weren't, which meant their owners let them disappear for a sly toilet visit (to be polite) and there were lots of young kids that seemed to want to shout very loudly at 6.30 in the morning (i must be getting old - but I leave mine at home to escape all that!). Apart from that little moan (which you've got to have one havent you) - it was fantasic and will definitely go there again! We paid £12 per night with EH which is very reasonable!

I now understand why some of the reviews say there's nothing for the kids to do, because, in a nut shell, despite all the lovely country side, there is nothing to do - unless you want to spend money on hiring this and renting that - you even have to pay 70p to pay in the car park of the local country park.
Mine spent most of the time being cross with each other - there were no other kids to play with, & no park or play area, so sitting with Mummy became somewhat tedious!
Firstly, the site: it's very well maintained, clean and welcoming, the owners could not be nicer, however, at the time of pitching, apart from a couple of single man and nothing else tents, we were the only tent (Just me & the 2 kids, Dad had to work) All the other units were rather flashy (& quiet!), touring vans, most with awnings, or motorhomes.
It transpires that I, in a little 4 man dome affair, with no electric hook up, paid the same price as the large flashy affairs, (£14 per night per tent) Then on top of the £14 per night, per tent, you have to pay either 20p or 50p (dependent on which one) for a shower (which in our case, everything is x3), you also have to pay 10p for a bowl full of hot water to wash your face and the same applies for the washing up water - so I just washed mine after boiling the kettle.
We had a lovely couple of days, the weather could have been better- but hey ho, that's England for you, it would be a good site to utilise as a stopping off place

We have now stayed at hollingworth lake twice within a two week period! The first time we stayed we were bit to hell by the midges due high humidity however this did not deter us and the following day was perfect. The site itself is relatively flat and a pitch where you want policy is operated with plenty of access to the ehu's, the toilets are kept spotless as are the showers 20p is needed but it lasts !
It's a great place to stay if you love walking with a great walk around the lake and a great pub the wine press to stop off at ! All in all a great site the owners are friendly and do regular drive pasts to check all is in order

Appears to be two camping fields - main one - and a further one which is fairly like a carpark. We were put in the latter. Its behind the static park and next to a field used for caravan rallies. There are two sets of showers one you need token for 50p - but the office closed at 6pm so we couldn't get token. The other set of showers were 20p - clean and hot water. (if you want hot water in the taps you also have to put 20p in).
The site was clean and well kept - great walks down the reservoir and the local pub the Wine Press was busy and looked good value.
Walks around the site lead to the Pennine Bridleway which goes behind the site.
Two different caravan rallies on whilst we were there.
