 Mid July 2004
We loved this campsite. It is situated in a very rural location surrounded by fields. Nearest village Southam is just over 1 mile away. The campsite has two large fields, first field has electric hookups all round the edge.. some long term residents, also seemed to be storage within the farm for caravans. Room in the middle of that field for tents. We loved the second overflow field.. no hook ups, pitch where you want, lots of space. No club or childrens playground.. bonus as far as we were concerned.. lots of space in the middle.
Little farm track led down to the canal.. about 100 metres or so.. wonderful walks by the canal. Half an hour to a canalside pub the Folly. Bring bikes and you can bike it.. £7 a night for just the two of us and our tent and car.. bargain!
NO onsite shop. but vilage nearby. Showers and loos and water points.
Only drawback is the washing up facilities.. bowls are left in male and female washrooms for you to fill up with hot water and wash up.. but not ideal, we washed up back at the tent. Farmer is installing sinks this winter.
Farmer will freeeze blocks for you, as will onsite wardens if you ask. Farm also sells buffalo burgers and buffalo milk ice cream from their own herd! Low fat and very good for you!
Lovely ale to be had locally.
Within 15 miles of Warwick, Stratford, etc etc. A lovely tranquil position. Filled up a bit at weekends, weekdays quieter in mid July. Lovely farmer, prefers to be telephoned rather than emailed, will always ring you back and confirm.

Worth getting the walking map to go exploring.

This rural site is located in some nice countryside and about a hundred yards from the canal.

It has fairly basic facilities but fine for the one night that we stayed. The site is very spacious with no defined pitches, which we found gave us a lot of privacy and plenty of room for games.

A good stop for a night or two.

 August 2002
Weekend visit to Holt Farm Camp Site - August 2002.

This site is best approached from the Southam bypass. Turn off the roundabout on to the A425 towards Daventry, immediately take a right turn towards Priors Marston. Following the brown caravan/camping signs, turn left into Holt Lane. The site entrance is approximately 700 m on the right. The site has two level fields. The larger and first of the two, had permanently sited caravans interspersed with some touring vans and tents. The ground was very good for tent pegs. The site is quiet with access to the Oxford canal, which is about 300 m away by farm track. The toilet block was clean with hot and cold water and had adequate facilities for washing and showering. No extra charges. Strangely separate washing up facilities were only provided in the womens' toilets.
The surrounding area is well served with public footpaths. We had two walks.
On the Saturday a walk along the towpaths of the Oxford and Grand Union canals to the locks at Stocton. After lunch at 'The Boat Inn' on the A426, we returned overland via Stockton Reservoir, Stockton village, New Zealand farm and the Oxford Canal. 'The Bridge at Napton' pub on the A425 was closed at 3.30 p.m. when we arrived, but walking on, we found 'The Folly' pub open further down the canal.
On the Sunday a walk to Marston Doles, via the road instead of the canal, as we found the farm track to the canal blocked by bullocks. Bullocks can be threatening if you have a dog with you. We then took the public footpath North, to Napton on the Hill, where we found that 'The Crown Inn' was open when we arrived at 11.30 a.m. We returned to the site via the Oxford Canal and farm track, the bullocks having moved to the other side of the field.
On the Friday night before arrival, we tried to purchase local Ordnance Survey maps, but found only one service station open on the Southam bypass and without the OL Sheets we required. The site is close to the edge of OL206, so two sheets are needed to cover the surrounding area. An early morning trip into Daventry was necessary, where Explorer Sheets OL206 and 222 were readily available at the 'Daventry Stationers'. A stout walking stick is recommended for fending off inquisitive bullocks.
We liked this site because of its quiet location near the Oxford Canal, which provided interesting level walks. We will use this site again.
