An Amazing setting; smaller site & Peaceful!
Everything you need to set up & relax. Flat, well spaced allocated lots.
Clean Toilet/Shower Block & a small kitchen with microwave; Kettle & washing up area. Drying room & washer/tumbler dryer for £2 each.
Very pleasant wardens, visit twice a day. Good info on boards.
Lots to see both locally & easy to travel by bike/car and buses.
A really memorable stay!

Well kept level site with good facilities.
Very quiet during our visit.
Lovely walks almost directly from the site (600 mtrs) to an interesting coast.
Would certainly visit again without hesitation.

Orkney council really know how to run good campsites!
Situated a couple of miles from Birsay in grounds of hostel. Most pitches seemed to be on grass and site is open meaning it gets pretty windy - some of the non-EHU tent pitches seemed to be situated next to a grassy bank - presumably that offers some wind protection.
Clean well-cared for facilities. Toilets and showers are unisex and located in a couple of portacabins. Toilet Chemical disposal point has been installed this year. Dishwashing and laundry facilities.
Few things to do in Birsay - Brough of Birsay (safe tide times listed in dishwashing room), St Magnus Way, Marwick Head and Bay, Earl's Palace, Birsay Tea Room and Orkney Brewery - basically nothing on the mainland's that far away
It was pretty wet, windy and miserable when we were there but we had no issues moving on and off our pitch as ground drainage excellent. Glad we didn't have an awning though - another motorhomer had real struggles keeping theirs up.
Another great warden - Alan appeared regularly each evening in his waterproofs doing the rounds and checking on everyone. Really nice guy

Surprising location.
More on offer than we thought.
Lovely warden as well.
If we know of anyone coming to Orkney we would definitely recommend this campsite to them.

Great campsite. Brilliant sea view with sunset. Ultra quiet and peaceful.
Very good shower/loo facilities even if in a portakabin-like building. 2 good dishwashing sinks in the hostel entrance.
Lovely walks available from site, the Brough of Birsay (island reachable on foot at low tide) is not to be missed for beauty and nature sightings (seals, puffins, guillemots and kittiwakes, skylarks, oystercatchers, a curlew, starlings, sparrows, a hooded crow as well as beautiful coastal wildflowers).
Site is a quite large, flat, grassy field. Electricity, water and grey water disposal all excellent. Wardens share their time between hostel and campsite and were very friendly.
Tide times displayed in hostel entrance. Book and pay by internet, choose your own pitch and just turn up.
If wanting to visit the recommended nearby village café, check the opening times carefully.

We had two nights here, after moving on from another Council owned Site in Stromness. Everything we said about that Site applies here, the Wardens were really friendly and helpful here too but, if anything, the site is even more exposed and at least one tent got shredded in the wind.
Although the site is a bit out of Birsay, the Brough is only a couple of miles away and an easy crossing when the tide is out. The Kitchener Monument is another couple of miles along the coast in the opposite direction.
The Birsay Tea Room was a real find, lovely cakes in a room with views.
There's plenty of space for children to play and a large play park just next to the Community Hall beside the Site.

Lovely spaced out site with good clean facilities.
Even though at the north of the mainland it was a good site for exploring this beautiful island.
Nice and flat.

Fantastic council owned campsite attached to the Birsay Hostel.
You need to book on-line, you chose which pitch you want from a plan and you recieve an email confirmation. When you arrive there is a board confirming pitches and names. If you arrive without booked and take a pitch it may be that someone else has booked on line during the day. The warden only comes around 7-8pm in the evening.
Loos and showers were fairly old in a container but very, very clean and heated. Showers were excellent and there was also a washing machine in the ladies £2 for a wash.
Pittches on grass - you chose if want an electric hookup pitch when you book. Fresh and grey water taps both situated in centre of site.
Walk down from the site to the cemetary andthere is a footpath into the village of Birsay. There is a cafe and a shop (sells fuel) the ruins of the Earls Palace and about a mile down the track is the causeway out to the island of Brough Head with a beautiful walk up the lighthouse.
We thought this was a great site, there were 12 other united and 3 tents and it was totally peaceful - highly recommed.

Birsay campsite Orkneys.
Recently camped on this excellent site with first rate toilet, shower and kitchen facilities.
Extremely helpful and cooperative warden Lorraine, who helped us on our last night when we were allowed into the hostel due to exceptionally strong winds.
Ideal location for visiting amazing sights.
