We had a fantastic experience at this site. We visited the site for three nights in mid April. We were expecting it to be quite windy as it is high up on the hills overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, but we were pleasantly greeted with a gentle breeze, which hung around for our duration.
We were in the end field on the top of the hill and had an electric hook up, which was handy as it was quite cold in the evening so we took a heater with us. The field is huge and the owners only allow you to camp around the edge, which is great if you have kids as they can play in the middle of this huge field.
There is a toilet block near the entrance of the field, which looks quite new and is cleaned daily (they even pipe in live radio which is great). The shower facilities are down near the farm house, they are quite basic but completely functional and clean.
There are some fantastic little pubs in the surrounding areas but we liked the Inn down at Hartland Quay, where you kind find any number ot guest beers / ales. We didn't eat here but we were told by the farmer that it is decent enough.
All in all a great place to spend some time, very picturesque and peaceful, we will definitely be going back here soon.

2 adults, 4 kids and a nutty dog. In a bell tent at Stoke Barton. Stoke Barton is a lovely farm and Helen & Colin gave us a warm welcome. There are 3 fields used for camping, one of which is only used during August.
There are toilets and showers in a couple of outbuildings next to the farmhouse which were very clean and very tidy. These are the only showers currently. The ladies showers were more spacious than the gents. They are push button showers, nice and hot. There are also laundry facilities in these buildings, we didn't use them but they looked modern and functional.
There is also a fridge and freezer available for use in another outbuilding. Although again we didn't use them, it was nice to know they had that if needed. Helen also offered to charge up any mobile phones ipods etc if we needed to at no extra charge.
We camped in field 2 not too far from the new toilet block. The ground was fairly flat. This is a very exposed site and as a result it can be very very windy but they don't cram the site full so there is lots of wide open space for the kids to run around in. Electric hook-up is available if you want it (we don't). You can have a camp fire and they sell large bags of wood for only £3.50
The new toilet block in field 2 is good, otherwise it's a 5 min walk back down to the farmhouse. They were open but unfinished (they continued to be worked on while we were there and should be completed soon). They were clean and tidy but could do with a few hooks and a couple of shelves. The ground leading up to the loos was a bit boggy.
We had one night of rain and it wasn't too bad. I believe they are planning to put chippings in or some other sort of hard standing so shouldn't be a problem in future. There is washing up space in the middle of the block. I am unsure if there will be a shower put in or not but it wasn't a problem for us. Be aware if you are at the bottom of field 3 (August only) it could be a fair hike to the loos and showers.
There are 2 swings in a grassy area near the farmhouse and a couple of goal posts for football in field 3. Colin was lambing while we were there and the kids were able to hold a 3 day old lamb. I would also highly recommend the breakfast.Delicious.
This is a great site. Relatively basic but has what you need, we will be booking again. Its peaceful (when its not blowing a hoolie), very friendly site owners and beautiful scenery.
There are lots of walks from the site and Hartland Abbey is worth a visit. Dog owners be aware that most beaches in the area are not dog friendly but Welcombe Mouth about 4 miles away is, and the kids will love the waterfall onto the rocky beach

All in all a very enjoyable stay. The campsite owners are very helpful and Colin was great in telling us the best place to pitch with our tent. The site is in a beautiful spot with fantastic views and a tranquil feel to it. If you like entertainment at night, a swimming pool and site club etc, this isn't the place for you. If you like getting away from it all on a site with basic but very clean facilities and lots of space between tents then give it a whirl.
It's the only campsite I've been on where you can pick up the latest copy of Farmers weekly in the mens toilets. Which for me was a winner!
The Hart inn in Hartland (about 5 mins drive) does excellent food (main courses £10-15) and comes highly recommended.
We hope to be back sometime soon.

I came across this site after searching on-spec for somewhere to pitch and finding others in the area too expensive. This was half the price of the others, so I blew the difference on the cream tea. Not to be missed. I must have had a half pint of clotted cream with 2 grapefruit sized scones. Very queasy afterwards.
The site itself is basic but adequate, the toilets and shower acceptable if not posh.
There is not a lot in Stoke (nor in the one near the Trent!), but Hartland Quay is atmospheric. The coast path is lovely here, as are the paths through to Clovelly, which is a must-see if you can walk there or afford the car park.
The street is so steep and narrow that deliveries are made with wooden sledges on ropes.

Enjoyed my short stay, positioned the tent so could lie back and look at the stunning view of the Atlantic! The downside was the wind as it meant I wasn't as sheltered as would have been on the field behind but that was my choice.
Great walks to be had from the farm and enjoyed the uphills as well as the downhills thanks to the scenery! The sunsets were fabulous and made up for the 'off the beaten track' and need for the car to get to the shop etc.
The shower was very annoying though, it stayed on for three seconds and then off, press button, another three seconds. It makes washing your hair more time consuming than needed. I think adjusting the time to at least 20 seconds would be preferable.
Nice area and glad I visited.

What a nice tranquil camp site this is, though some might think it a little rustic the owners ensure that the campsite does not get over full for the facilities available. There is loads of room, privacy, clean toilets & plenty of hot water. Being able to have an open camp fire makes it more enjoyable for the kids. Toast marshmallow, there is a trampoline and play area for them to run their socks off too. We had no worries when our little one went off riding around the site on her bike as we knew that the other residents would look out for others kids.
This site has loads of space even for a large family/friend with a huge tent as there's loads of room to be had by all.
The site is a little windy as it's right on the coast although this didn't both us in the slightest as we just pitched up like the others close to the hedge. One thing we did notice is that the site's advertised as being in Bideford although it's some 10 miles away in a village of Stoke/Harland.
The pub at Harland Quay is worth a walk down the caostal path too, but don't drink too much of the local draft cider as the walk back'll be 3 times as hard. Tee hee
Although we found the site a little tucked out of the way when we went out for days we'll definitely be going back and will recommend to friends looking for somewhere to stay

We have just returned from 11 days at Stoke Barton during the non 'Met Office barbeque summer'! Despite having to put the camper up in the pouring rain (we had to leave the awning until the next day!) and being buffeted by winds off the Atlantic during the first night and subsequently we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. As previous reviewers have written it is quite exposed so you do need to be prepared for that but a great bonus is that the field dries out very quickly.
Farmer Colin (he has it embroidered on his overalls!) is fantastic - he helped us manoeuvre the trailer into place when we arrived and hitch it up again when we left -and is always around and about the site checking that everyone and everything is OK. The facilities are on the basic side but they were always kept very clean (which was quite a feat given the weather), well-stocked with toilet rolls, paper towels, etc. And checked several times a day. [A cautionary note: If you are likely to need the loo in the middle of the night we recommend having a portable one with you (a walk across the field in rain and / or strong wind is not great).] The ladies' showers are excellent with proper shower rooms - can't speak for the men's but I think they got a positive vote. You can order milk and they do a gas exchange but otherwise you need to make sure that you have stocked up on supplies from the shops in nearby Hartland or elsewhere.
If you want a treat we can recommend Helen's cream teas (weekends) and breakfast in the farmhouse.
The location of the site is wonderful with views out to the Atlantic Ocean and Lundy Island. If you are interested in church architecture, the parish church at Stoke is well worth a visit. The coastline around this whole area is fantastic with lots of little bays and coves to visit and such dramatic scenery. If you are lucky there are superb sunsets at Hartland Quay and on the site itself. There is plenty of interesting wildlife to observe - birds of prey, swallows darting around the site and nesting in the barns, butterflies on the hedgerows. Another thing we really liked was the complete lack of traffic noise - the only sounds are the crashing of the waves, the birds and the wind.
If you want a meal out, the Hart Inn in Hartland is excellent - very good food in what is still essentially a local pub. We went for my birthday and ended up there a second time on our last night as we enjoyed it so much. Wicked sticky toffee pudding amongst other desserts.
Unless you are remarkably fit or plan to spend most of your time on the site you really do need a car to get around the area- and get used to driving on single track roads and using passing places!

This site was visited by my husband and daughters aged 18 and 13. Nice big field, plenty of room, facilities basic very long walk to showers(girls drove) and no hot water for washing dishes. The views and the location made up for that, being close to the coast path and within walking distance of the pub at Hartland Quay. Cooked breakfast in the farmhouse fantastic which has to be booked the night before. Because of the location the site is exposed, so need to be careful when pitching taller tents, they took a day tent which had to be taken down in high winds.

Visited with 3 friends over June/July 2009. Great campsite for us. Basic but clean with free showers and all for £5 pppn. Large camping fields and pitch where you like, not too much wind the week we stayed so no need for the windbreak after reading previous reports! There were Buzzards and kestrels around the site along with skylarks in the next field which I personally haven't heard for several years.Stunning views and lovely walk down to Hartland Quay where there is a very friendly pub with local ales and good pub grub and the staff were very friendly and helpful with their knowledge of the local area.
Situated about equidistant between Bideford and Bude so there are places to visit if wet and a trip to Padstow and Clovelly both recommended.
All in all a great week and we will visit again.

The campsite overlooked the bay and you could see Lundy Island. It was beautiful, however when the wind gets up take down your awning as soon as possible we struggled with this and couldn't get it down before one of the poles had bent.
The directions on the web site and in the Caravan & Camping book state that getting to this site couldn't be easier. It's very easy if you are camping and your tent is in the back of your car or you have a small motorhome. Try getting their with a large caravan and you will find that the last two miles from the centre of Hartland are on a lane that two small cars would be unable to pass one another in places. By the time we got to site we were exhausted from shunting the caravan backwards into very small pull ins at the side of the lane and these are very rare (the reason we had to move was due to a large number of cars with boats attached coming towards us.) As you couldn't see anything coming towards you because of the twists and turns and the high hedges you couldn't stop when a pull in was available.
There is a local shop in Hartland but be warned this is expensive. The nearest Supermarkets are in either Bideford or Bude and whichever direction you go in it is a 14 mile ride to either so you will have to go on a 28 mile round trip to do any buying in you require for a few days.
The views were lovely
