Stoke Barton was a great place to camp, despite the wettest windiest week in the year, us 7 mums and 15 children had a ball. The owners are so helpful and we very much appreciated the severe weather warnings (yes in July!)
Despite the howling wind and pounding rain, we still managed a coastal walk, campfire and beach trips everyday! The scenery is spectacular, and discovering Hartland beach and pub on the last day was magical.

What can I say, I've visited this camp site every year for the last 6 years during spring half term and although the facilities are pretty basic they are improving year on year. Colin and Helen and the rest of the staff as really friendly and Colin is rarely seen without 1 or 10 children riding on his Quad.
There is a toilet block on the main field which is cleaned every day. An outside washup area (cold water only). There are showers and more toilets down by the farm.
There is a barn with freezers in for freezer blocks and sockets for charging mobile phones etc all free of charge.
You can also get your gas bottle renewed.
The farm also has fabulous tea rooms and will provide breakfast and packed lunches if ordered the night before at a reasonable cost.
The main camping area is a large field which is high up so the wind can be a bit of a concern if you don't have a good sturdy tent (mines a cabanon espace so no problems there).
There are no marked out pitches its basically as near or far from others as you like. Even when classed as full there is still plenty of space (other sites would double or treble the numbers).
The charges are per person per night so you can have a monster tent (like mine) and know the owner isn't going to start adding on surcharges. There is no charge for dogs, cars etc like some sites and you can park right next to your tent.
Fires and bbq's are allowed and fire wood can be bought from Colin.
There is a trampoline for the kids which has this year been moved to a field at the top and there is now goal posts.
For the kids your not to far from The Milky Way and Big Sheep, for the shopper you've got Atlantic Village near Bideford (15 miles) and Bude (also 15 miles).
The nearest village Hartland has most of wha you need and is a 10 min drive away.
A must if you visit this site is your hiking / walking gear and a good camera as the coastal walks are astonishing.
Hartland Point lighthouse is a must with a small hut that does lunches and cream teas (outside seating only).
The shortish walk to the Quay is also a must with a refreshing beer waiting at the Wreckers Inn, just be prepared for the climb back afterwards as its all uphill.
So to sum up this is the perfect site for a good all round camping experience.

We went for what was going to be a couple of nights but unfortunately the location is so windy that it really wasn't the ideal site for us. We did try to pitch behind a wall but this didn't really help. There is a toilet and basin block in the campfield however the showers are a bit of a walk and to be honest, very basic and disappointing. There is a nice pub/hotel very close to the sea which we would recommend for a nice pub meal and also very friendly and dog friendly

A group of friends decide to go camping last minute in august and Stoke Barton Farm Campsite was very kindly able to put us up, not only that, but we were surprised with the spacious plots. Tents are put up next to hedges as it does get a bit breezy later on at night. We had a very large tent and numerous cars with us and they were able to accommodate us with ease. The toilets / showers were cleaned regularly and although basic were very serviceable. However the camping is up a dirt track, so expect a bumpy arrival, however when you are there its more than worth it.
The campsite is brilliantly located to explore Dartmoor and with the towns of Bude and Bideford close by there is plenty of local beaches to relax on and shopping to be had. Tintagel ruins, legendary home of King Arthur is just a stone throw to the south, however be advised there is a lot of walking and more steps than this reviewer could comfortable walk!
In Hartland a mere 2-3 miles down the road you will find your pub base serving up some very nice food late into the evening.
And what can be more special than the well maintained walk to the headland to see the sun set over lundy, this coupled with the most breathtaking non light polluted skies that I have seen for quite some time led to some special nights.
So if your looking for something a little out of the way, somewhere with a bit more space and somewhere to go and relax, I would suggest looking to this campsite! Thanks for putting us up last year and hope to comeback sometime soon!

Dear campers, we the site owners, Colin and Helen, would like to thank everyone who camped at Stoke Barton this past season. The weather has been the worst we have known in the 22 years we have had the site, but nevertheless we have been amazed at everyone’s good spirits. It seems that Colin spent most of the summer trying to rescue wet soggy campers and pegging down tents. Here's hoping next season will be better and we hope it hasn’t put too many off! You all deserve a medal. We would like to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy new year [with more sun!]. Best wishes Colin, Helen, staff, family and all the dogs.

I stayed at this site for a few days as a base for walking the South West Coast path in the area. It is well suited to this, being about a 10-15 minute walk to the coast path. As another review has commented it can be a little windy here, but Colin was very helpful and offered a pitch between two (empty) caravans for more shelter if required although I didn't need it. The main camping field has toilets and sinks. There are further toilets and good warm showers a 5 minute walk or so away at the farm house. All facilities were kept clean for the duration of my stay. The owners also provide fridge and freezers in a barn (free to use) as well as charging for mobiles etc, although I didn't use this as I couldn't get a signal on O2 anyway. The campsite is very good value and there are no hidden extras to pay for (e.G. Showers, car parking) as you find at some sites. The car parking is on the main camping field although it can get very muddy - Colin advised the best route to drive over the field to avoid getting bogged down. There are no facilities in the village itself, although a breakfast is available at the campsite. The main camping field is huge and not at all crowded so no problem finding your own space and plenty of space for children to play. Everyone was quite from about 9:30-10pm so no problems getting to sleep. There is a pleasant pub at Hartland Quay, a 15 minute walk away (or few minutes drive, but there is a £2 toll on the road) and Hartland village is about 30 minutes walk away or 10 minute drive and has several pubs, shops (open until 9pm) and a chip shop. If you're walking the coast path there are daily buses from Hartland to Clovelly, Bideford and Bude and although not especially frequent are at times that make it easy to take the bus out and walk back, provided you don't mind the walk along the (quiet) road into Hartland. There are sandy beaches along the coast from Bude and several miles north, as well as at Westward Ho! Also the beach at Shipload Bay, Titchberry (a couple of miles north of the campsite by Hartland Point) has a sandy beach but it is a steep and difficult climb down to the beach so not advised to do that with much equipment. As another reviewer has noted Clovelly is lovely and close by (and you don't have to pay the £5.50 if you don't want to) but I'd also recommend Bucks Mills, also very pretty, with a waterfall on the beach, and without the crowds that Clovelly attracts. All in all, a very good value campsite run by friendly and helpful people. Just remember there are few facilities close by, so you'll need to come prepared!

Our annual camping holiday brought us to this rural and remote part of Devon. Fantastic views of Lundy Island and the church tower of Stoke. Chose this campsite as it allowed fires. We only managed to have three as the weather was dreadful. We had gail force winds and battering rain for most of the week. The campsite is not sheltered but out tent managed to withstand the weather although we lost our annexe. Colin the farmer said we deserved a medal for staying the full 10 days.
We think Colin is the one who deserves a medal he is constantly helping people with towing caravans, pulling cars out of the mud and generally looking after the campsite. He also takes the children around to feed his sheep and cows. His wife runs the tea rooms where the best cream teas of Devon can be found.
There is a lovely 25 min walk to Hartland quay where a welcome pub serving hearty meals at reasonable prices can be found. Hartland village itself has three pubs a post office/general stores a small supermarket and a veg/meat shop it takes about 10 mins in the car. For a bigger shop a new Asda has opened just outside Bideford with a retail outlet village and a children's play area called Atlantic adventure.
Clovelly is worth the visit along with Lynton/Lynmouth. Sandy beaches can be found at Bude, Westward ho and Widemouth bay all of which are about 45 min drive.
If you want a all dancing/singing campsite than this is not for you. It is farmers fields with long grass very few but clean facilities with excellent views and a fantastic service from Colin and his wife. There is ice pack freezing facilities and battery charging.

I think that this is a great camp site but with a few drawbacks.
Positives first: facilities are basic but kept clean and the owners are friendly and helpful. They also sell wood for you to have a campfire at £3 per bag - we found that was plenty to keep us going all night! There is also a very nice walk across the fields and down the cliffs to the 'Wreckers Retreat' bar at the Harland Quay Hotel - not too strenuous if you're reasonably fit.
We were in the main camping field which has a toilet block with handbasins (no wash cubicles though) and a washing up area, however do note that there is no hot water in this block. It is a bit of a trek down to the showers which are located at the farm entrance. I wouldn't mind this if the weather was fine, but we didn't fancy slogging through the mud - so we simply stopped off at the showers on our way out for the day.
The only problem major problem we had at this site was the wind! Being located only a couple of fields from the cliff top means that you have great views out to sea and spectacular sunsets, but it also means that it can be very windy indeed (windy enough to make pitching/striking the tent difficult).
I would love to go back to this site, but I suspect that the wind will often be an issue simply due to the location - I know that there isn't much the owners can do about the wind and there are large hedges, but sadly they don't seem to make much difference to the windy-ness. Also it is in a very out of the way area which is great if you just want to chill, but if you want to go out and visit somewhere it can take a while to get there.

Visited this site at the end of july 2008, myself, my two kids and two dogs had intended to use our tent for the duration, but when we arrived, it was rather windy and we weren't able to put the tent up, a pole had also snapped, so I was just starting to pack up, when colin arrived and offered one of his caravans for the duration of our stay. This was very kind of him and I'm am sure should this had happened on any other camp site, I would have had to move to a bed and breakfast accommodation.
He sited a caravan for us, and after fixing the tent, a day later we managed to put it up, only for it to nearly blow away later on the following week, luckily we still had use of the caravan to take shelter!.
This site is lovely, loads and loads of space for the kids to play, great walks to the coasts.
There's no luxuries here, but it is all the better for that, ( unless you like overpriced, regimented sites)
Dogs are free at this site, which is very unusual in today's commercial climate, you are allowed camp fires and the kids have a great time.
The only downfall is that it can be windy and you need a sturdy tent!

This is a wonderful site. We can't recommend it highly enough. We were camping just before the schools broke up and the site, although not empty, was quite quiet but you could tell they were preparing for the busy season.
The facilities although not luxurious were functional and scrupulously clean. There are toilet blocks and cold water access on the main camping fields but the showers are located by the farmhouse (even from the furthest point of the field this is no more than a 5 minute amble). There is also a small playground for children, next to to a paddock. Our 2 year old had a wonderful time looking at the horses whilst bouncing on a HUGE trampoline. Also on site is the farms highly regarded tearoom - where they serve divine cream teas and cakes. The owners also offer cooked and cold breakfasts at reasonable rates.
The surrounding area is beautiful - it is a short walk (30 minutes with a toddler) from the site to the dramatic rocky beach at Hartland Quay (and slightly down at heel pub). The village of Hartland is about 3 miles away and has several well-stocked shops. There are also at least three pubs here, we only visited two - the Anchor Inn and the Hart Inn. The Anchor serves reasonable food at reasonable prices. The Hart was much more lively and serves really good food at prices which, although reasonable, are slightly higher than the Anchor's.
Slightly further afield you are close to the historic town of Clovelly (which although pretty is not worth the £5.50 adult admission). For those with kids you are also a short drive away from the Milky Way Theme Park (which we didn't visit) and the Big Sheep Farm Park (which we did and can highly recommend for any children aged between 1 and 100).
The only drawback about camping at Stoke Barton Farm is the big obvious one - the lack of a sandy beach within the vicinity. The farm is about halfway between Bideford and Bude (14 miles to each) and there is a lovely beach at Bude. The drive to either town is pretty and not too long (20-30 minutes depending on traffic).
So how do we rate Stoke Barton Farm? Its a terrible site do not go there! That way it will be empty when we go next year.
