Stoke Barton very much fits into my favourite type of site category. It is by the sea, large, open, basic and cheap.

Firstly to the sea, which if you choose the right part of the site the views are fantastic and sunsets amazing. There is no beach to visit, they don’t really exist in this part of North Devon, its all rugged cliffs, but a short walk towards the sea gives great views south along the Cornish Coast. The sea did cause a rather dense mist to prevail for a while, but I guess you take the rough with the smooth.

The site is large, covering about four large fields, and it is quite open meaning that it is a bit exposed, but I don’t mind that in my camper van. Although it’s fairly hilly country, the pitches were flat and its a pitch where you like site, meaning you’ve only got yourself to blame if you choose the wrong pitch, but you don’t feel crowded in.

The facilities are basic, but clean and functional. There is a portakabinish type toilet for the two upper fields, although it feels pretty permanent, with washing up facilities and showers located at the entrance to the site which was a bit of a walk from my pitch. There is a shop with the usual basics and an information barn with freezers and battery charging.

The owners were very friendly and helpful and from my point of view there is very little negative to say about this site. It won’t suit family groups who rely on laid on entertainment and pristine and ample facilities. For hardy campers though it’s perfect, oh and very reasonably priced, I was on my own and didn’t have EHU, but for August I only paid £6. 50 per night, a miracle.

Finally, it is a good site to do the SWCP as it is at the start of one of the recommended days, Hartland Quay to Bude. There is an infrequent bus from Hartland to Bude, about a 20 mins walk away and the walk itself really is one of the toughest stages, so get up early and take as many provisions as you can carry, but you can enjoy a nice meal back at the Hartland Quay Hotel when you are done.

This site was incredibly relaxing. It's a good way away from main roads and so no traffic noise, and whilst a little exposed because of its clifftop location, the wide open skies and blustery air makes for a fantastically recharging experience.

We stayed as a family of four for a weekend with another tentful of friends with children, arriving late on Friday afternoon and leaving mid Sunday morning.

The welcome we received was friendly and helpful, with Colin and Helen explaining where we could find the washup and showers/loos, and Colin showing us to our gently sloping pitches in a small field very close by.

Guess this was because we had EHU and so closer to the farm house than a couple of the other fields we saw- those had fantastic views of the sea and a huge open space but must admit we would have felt a bit exposed to the elements up there. It felt very close to the sun!

Showers were clean and mainly warm, although I had a late shower one morning at about 10:30 and did notice that it was chilly. Should have got up earlier.

Loos were nice and clean and loo roll plentiful (important with small children in tow as well as too much wine and beer for the adults who then need to make a visit every ten minutes!) and the whole site was immaculately kept without being clinical and manicured.

It's the tidiest working farm I've ever seen. We enjoyed helping to usher the sheep down the track one morning as they were moved from one field to another, and saying hello to the pony in the paddock adjoining another field.

The play area on site is in good condition with fun toys for a range of ages (big trampoline, big & small slides, seesaws, swings) as well as a decent sized footie pitch with netted goals and whilst we were there it always seemed like a handful of children were making new friends over an impromptu game.

It's in a nice safe location, and whilst a good way from the EHU pitch we were on, the site felt safe enough for us to allow our 7 year old to go up there with a couple of new friends he'd made whilst on site. First time we'd let him go somewhere like this on his own- he was very proud!

The small field we were in had our two tents and two other seasonal caravans on site- it was a peaceful and sheltered spot with high hedges that were quite necessary because of the high winds that being on the coast brings.

Pitches are not marked out which meant we were able to put our tents where we liked and we weren't greedy, and left space for others (although nobody else arrived whilst we were there) it felt very spacious and relaxed.

We were only told about the recycling point on the last day just as were all in the car ready to leave which was a shame as we were worried about the amount of rubbish (in bags) we'd managed to accumulate and had left in and next to the bin near our tents as instructed. Thought there was something wrong with us as none of the others we saw had as much in! We'd mentioned to Helen that we managed to create a lot of trash and it was at this point she told us about the recycling point, we hadn't noticed it.

We rented a brazier/fire pit one night (£1. 50 a night, excellent value) and a bought a bag of wood on site to go in it (£5). Plenty of wood but it was a shame that it was so green as this meant it was really really smoky- we had to put it out early because our poor eyes couldn't take it any longer (and I swear I can still smell smoke on my favourite hoodie nearly a fortnight later after a number of washes!)

The communal fridges and freezers available on site (free) were very welcome, as was the microwave and kettle- all housed in the dutch barn near the farm house- next time we might even consider leaving the EHU at home as the facilities we need are all there.

Husbands and children did the walk along the headland which they thoroughly enjoyed, and we visited Bude one day which was a lovely town with great lifeguarded beach and plenty of rock pools to explore for the children.

Chippy in Hartland was very expensive (£18 for two adult and two children's fish & chips, plus a portion of mushy peas) and served the worlds smallest sized chips- but we also had some in Bude that were an identical size so perhaps its a cultural thing in that part of the country!

Other facilities in Hartland were good, off license / newsagents / pubs etc, and it was a very pretty area to visit.

We were really sad to leave, the children didn't want to leave their new friends and the adults were going to miss the peace and relaxed atmosphere. On departure we tried to book for another weekend (10/11/12 August) but apparently this is Hartland Carnival and they were fully booked, as it's a popular holiday activity.

I will most definitely be booking here again, and am almost loathe to recommend it as I don't want anyone else to ruin the peace! But it deserves a special mention as my favourite campsite of all time - incredibly relaxing.

I and three friends stayed at Stoke Barton for three nights. I normally head to Ilfracombe but fancied a change and a site that was back to basics, although with electric. I went through many campsites and decided on this one due to the fact you could have open fires and it was a short walk to the coast.

The site itself was easy enough to find and upon are arrival we checked in at the farm house. The lady who I understand to be the owner took our details and payment and was very helpful in showing us what field to head to and also giving instructions to get to local amenities, including the pub.

We set up our tent and plugged in! As a keen walker & photographer that dramatic coastline is something that brings me back to North Devon time & time again. As soon as we finished putting up the tent you could hear the roar of the waves and this was on a sunny day. It was lovely to sit out in the September sun and take in the view of the ocean.

That evening we decided to walk down to the local pub at Hartland quay which was a reasonable walk over the hills from the site. The walk was fine & well worth it for the sights alone. The pub is in a great location and I got many snaps of the waves crashing in. It's hard to describe quite how breath - taking the location is.

The last evening we wanted an open fire and the lady owner was must helpful in giving us a Brazier and a large bag of logs which I believed cost around £2. 50. What a great price considering the fun and warmth it gave us for the evening.

The toilets are in a modern purpose built building which was kept very clean and always smelt nice. The showers although older than the toilet block were in good condition and did as expected.

Everyone at the site was very friendly as were the staff in the Hartland shop which was about a five minute drive away. Ilfracombe and Barnstable are not far away and make good days out.

All in all I would definitely return to this site. It's in a superb location and well kept and best of all lovely and peaceful.

I highly recommend the walk along the south west coast path from Hartland quay to Hartland point. The up's and down's are well worth it.

We will visit again!

The location of this campsite is superb. Very peaceful and lots of room. We found the showers, wash rooms and toilets were kept very clean.

The fridge and freezers are a very nice touch and much appreciated. The walk down through the fields to Hartland Quay was delightful and although a bit testing on the way back up, is no problem for those who are reasonably fit.

We encountered a mixture of weather over our two day stay, windy and rainy as well as sunny enabling us to have a wider perspective of camping in the area.

The high hedge rows gave reasonable protection from the wind. We will certainly visit this site again.

We loved this site! We wanted a quiet, rural site, near to a pub and with good walks (what we tend to look for in a site) and this ticked all the boxes.

Colin was helpful from the outset, showed us a few pitches giving a 'rundown' of each (we requested quiet but a view spot and he even gave us an idea of the size and make up of group we'd potentially be next to!) then left us to choose our spot - we chose a pitch with great views over Lundy and the coast, even though we were warned about the wind; the view was brilliant!

The site was well maintained and always clean, plenty of owner/warden presence. We thought the showers may get a bit busy but neither of us queued at any time.

Everything was included in the price and there was plenty of freezer space and the opportunity to charge phones, cameras, etc. I loved the quote on one of the notices which pointed out that the site never tries to be 'ensuite camping' - very true!

The facilities were clean and probably basic for some; we've been to sites where the facilities are amazing but it's regimented rows of tents and neighbours very close by. Not the case here, loads of space and plenty of peace and quiet.

We had friends visiting during the week and they were only charged for staying overnight not for parking which is unusual these days.

I would thoroughly recommend this site, it's a gem which doesn't pack people in but caters to its facilities and maintains a laidback friendly atmosphere and is in a killer location!

Fantastic site in a beautiful location with a view of Lundy Isle & the Celtic Sea. There's a nice clean toilet & washing up block in the centre field & a shower unit down by the farmhouse.

A nice point is we were just given directions to the field, but not given a specific pitch & they're unmarked, so we had plenty of room. Its advisable to show a bit of consideration with this matter & not take advantage.

Didn't get chance to visit the tearoom, but they do cream teas for a reasonable price. Bideford & Bude are half hour drive either way, so depending where you're used to living, its nice & isolated.

Unfortunately, we had to cut short our stay due to dreadful weather, but we will most certainly return to finish our holiday at a later date.

This is one of the nicest campsites I have ever stayed in and I have done a lot of camping! We arrived to brilliant sunshine on Saturday and were greeted by the owners who were all lovely.

We were camping with another family and the owners had arranged for us to have spaces next to each other (with glorious sea views). The site itself is huge (I think it has four fields) and some of the fields have hook ups. We had enough space between us to pitch another tent and the only places where people were pitched was round the edges of the massive fields so it felt very spacious.

The toilet facilities were always clean and tidy and warm. Good washing up facilities with music playing in them. The flower beds around them gave it a nice feel and there was always enough space for everyone.

The showers are situated by the farmhouse so quite a distance from our pitches but this did not matter and we enjoyed the bike ride to the showers. Showers were always hot (free) and clean. Good laundry room including space to hang clothes (Pegs included).

Our daughter and friend (age 5and 6) loved the play area and we enjoyed walks directly from the site to Spekes Mill and to the Hartland Quay. The scenery is breath taking and we are definitely going to go back again. The area around is steeped in history and there is so much to do.

I would recommend for families who appreciate the quieter side to camping/ caravanning. As guests we were treated with respect and the guests seemed to respond well with everyone well behaved! No noisy campers at night and the addition of braziers to have camp fires in, made our stay even more memorable.

Overall a very high quality campsite with friendly helpful owners and I would recommend this to others. I can't leave out the tea rooms which were in my opinion the best I have ever been to. Cream teas were gorgeous!

What a stunning area to camp ! the most spcae I have ever had on a site- owners so friendly and showed us where to pitch, but we were given so much choice and we were a large group of 6 tents for much of the week but they couldn't have been more helpful.

All facilities were clean and well stocked and didn't have to wait for showers ever- even though they a bit of a walk from the the camping fields. Must be down to the fact that the owners choose not to overcrowd thier fields which really does make for a relaxing unspoilt experience. Hope it remains so- its a real rarity nowadays

Pub at Hartland Quay a must do- bit of a walk but well worth the effort for the views and good honest pub grub

All in all a wonderful site- with breathtaking scenery- enjoy!

Lovely peaceful campsite in a beautiful area. Good walks from the site.

Good clean facilities friendly owners. I didn't find the walk down to the showers a problem.

Enjoyed sitting outside at dusk watching the barn owl hunting, and the baby swallows in the freezer barn were lovely.

A visit to the Gnome reserve is a must when in this area. The pub down at the quay does good food if you don't want to drive although its quite a trek back up the hill with dodgy knees!

We drove to Morrisons at Bideford for provisions and fuel.

What a lovely site, one of the best we have stayed at; great flat pitches on lush mowed fields.

A warm friendly welcome from the family. Very peaceful. Free use of fridge, freezer and microwave a lovely touch.

Showers and toilets clean although you might have to queue in high season. Music in the toilets a great touch.

Good pub grub and good prices down at Hartland Quay. Local produce and limited shops in Stoke along with pubs and a tea room, just right for that well earned cream tea after walking part of the coastal path that runs close by the camp site.
