The site has flat, mown pitches with longer grass between pitches. Cars are not allowed next to tents and there are wheel barrows to use for transferring kit. We have a trailer and it was OK just to wheel that to our pitch.
We chose this site because campfires are allowed, we bought wood from the site shop and hired a tripod with grill to make cooking over the fire achievable. (Although we always have campfires when camping we usual fail with cooking over them, so being able to hire these was a real plus for us. )
As other reviews have mentioned, the toilet and shower block was great, one of the nicest we've had on a campsite. Although the showers are the ones where you press a button in and get a short burst of water, the water is hot and if you hold the button in you can get it on for longer if needed.
There is a small site shop, a fridge and freezer thaat can be used (the freezer is only supposed to be used for ice blocks), a drying room, and books that can be borrowed / exchanged.
Our visit was really one of two halves. The first 2 days were peaceful, lots of empty pitches that children could play ballgames on, relaxing and quiet. Then we hit Easter Bank Holiday weekend and it filled up. We were in pitch T15, which we didn't realise was directly infront of a rope swing on the embankment behind.
As all pitches were now full this became the main site for kids playing. Would have been great if we had young children, but ours are now teenagers and - like us- got a bit fed up of the noise.
When we wandered around the site the pitches at either end, further from the amenities block, or those backing onto the stream, seemed to be more peaceful. On a more positive note, even when the site was full, after about 10 each night it was silent.
So, yes, it is a lovely site. Yes, we would come again and have already recommended it to friends. But if we did come again we'd definitely not choose pitch T15.
In the area we can recommend having a day out in York (never been before, a lovely city), doing the Solar System cycle trail (we hired bikes from Get Cycling in York), walking around the White Horse on Sutton Bank and visiting Rievaulx Abbey (expensive but it was stunning, and there was a falconry display on while we were there).

We spent 3 nights in one of the Hobbit Houses and had a fantastic time. The site is immaculate, well thought out and a really peaceful and friendly atmosphere.
The little shop is well stocked and not overpriced, the breakfast caravan on site is a great touch and having a fire pit for the evenings and to cook on was great.
We ate out at the White Swan in Ampleforth which had a great kids menu and very good food. Visited Sutton Bank and really enjoyed the center, with it's natural play park for children and amazing views.
We are definitely heading back here next year, cannot recommend highly enough.

WOW,
What a lovely campsite. We're quite new to camping but have stayed at a few campsites since getting our new to us little pop up camper. I'm not the kind of person to write reviews but felt compelled to let everybody know what a brilliant site this is.
As the name suggests this is a hideaway, tucked away nicely from any major towns yet still close to York and Thirsk.
All on site amenities were clean, tidy and well kept. Blue shoe socks are provided so grass and dirt is not trampled into the toilets and shower blocks.
Our pitch, V3 was excellent. Plenty of room between the pitches for privacy and they're well kept. Barney was out with his lawnmower keeping the site up to scratch. Would have preferred an electric hook up but they was all booked for our trip.
We didn't really do much exploring of the local area we were there for the peace and quiet which we got in abundance.
The local wildlife was out in force whilst we were there. We saw a couple of squirrels (unfortunately grey not red). Loads of rabbits on site and woodpeckers in the woods nearby. There was owls in the woods at night screeching and hooting.
We took a walk along the stream and saw 2 prey birds circling the thermals above the farmers field, not sure what they was, they was quite big possibly buzzards.
All in all we loved it. The staff was really friendly, polite and helpful. Hopefully we can get booked back in for August time but I'd go in the middle of winter.
Have fun and happy camping.

We spent one night at The Hideaway this weekend, in a tent with our 2 daughters. The site is beautiful, peaceful and calm. Children could play in safety, the pitches are a good size and surrounded by nice areas of grass and some trees. The potwash area, toilets/showers and shop are of a high standard. They’re kept very clean, and the underfloor heating in the toilets is much appreciated on a 4am bathroom call!
Barney and all the staff are lovely and friendly. Everything about the site was explained on check in, they work hard to make this site the little gem that it is. We were lucky enough to be there on their ‘Baxbyfest’ night, which was a lovely gathering of people with instruments having a good singalong, families all sitting around the camp fires joining in. The kids loved it as much as we did.
We will definitely return to this lovely site, hopefully on a regular basis!

Site well maintained and clean and tidy. Staff helpful and courteous. Facilities clean and warm. Only one negative, cannot park next to tent due to fragile ground. Lovely quiet surroundings.

This is a really nice site. Very well thought out with a firepit on every pitch. The facilities are also lovely and clean. There's a little shop, which seems to have most things you might need or may have forgotten. It's in an area with some nice country walks and a few pubs within easy walking distance. Also, close enough to York, if you want to visit.
The only complaint I have is the booking system. We were bought a gift voucher for this site, for Christmas, but when we came to book our pitch there is nowhere on the website booking system to redeem a gift voucher. When I emailed to query this I was told that I would have to pay for my pitch again and then be refunded once we arrived. This isn't really satisfactory at all - if someone buys you a gift you shouldn't have to buy it again before you can use it!

We have just got home from four nights. We chose the site because of the combination of accessible facilities ( my partner is disabled) and campfires along with the spacious pitches. Sited in a sheltered valley with the beck running through the grounds, this is a lovely, laid back site. The rules are clear and set a tone for peace and neighbourliness amongst campers. The facilities are good quality with male and female sections with toilets, showers and washrooms, all free. There is a pot washing room with freezer, a small shop, a drying room and charging points for phones. Everywhere is kept clean and tidy, and is warm and welcoming. Nice touches include a book swap corner, and cooking tripods for hire to cook over your open fire. There is an on site cafe doing drinks and pastries each morning, and pizza on a Friday, plus a butcher's van on site on a Saturday.
A very family friendly site with lots of space to run and play, the village of Husthwaite is. 5 min walk away, with a playground and a good pub, the Plum and Partridge.
It's a great location with lots of nearby attractions, it's a perfect location for a family holiday.

Cannot praise The Hideaway highly enough! As novice campers, we wanted somewhere easy to book, not too far from home with good facilities. We found all of this and more! Booking couldn't be simpler, the location was perfect and communal facilities were spotlessly clean and very well maintained. Designated parking spaces close to your pitch and free to use wheelbarrows made unloading the car easy. The pitches themselves were well maintained and each pitch has its own fire pit. We found the site very peaceful and safe for our son to have plenty of freedom, this is not a site for party animals! The Hideaway is ideally situated for days out in York, the North York Moors an East coast.

Just spent two nights on an ehu pitch. Lovely and spacious which included a fire pit. Parking is very near each pitch had its own parking space and wheelbarrows are available to take quipment from car to pitch. Beautiful site very peaceful strict no noise between 11pm to 7am which was adhered to only sound we heard was a few owls etc. Torches needed for trips to toilet once it gets dark. Had a walk down to the adult only part no electric there each pitch in its own enclosed area and trolleys provided to transport tent etc from car parking area, if we didn't need power to charge electric wheelchair and was a lot fitter would be tempted. Toilets/showers very clean and one of the main reasons we chose the site was the disabled facilities advertised. I have to say they were excellent plenty of room to manoeuvre in wheelchair drop down handle near toilet grab rail near basin mirror in right place and lovely shower with drop down seat and shower is constant not push button, as is the basin. Always spotlessly clean apart from when a fellow older camper used it and left mud, grass everywhere showed it to reception didn't want the lady to think it was me and she offered to clean it immediately. As we were only there for short time we just stayed on site so couldn't say anything about the area, will definitely want to go again.
