Camped here as a group of student hikers backpacking the coast path. We were made very welcome to camp, owners were laid back and friendly. We coincided with a VW festival, who were very considerate and stopped their live music at 11. 30 on the dot. Facilities good although token-driven showers a bit of a pain. Washing up area had hot water and even washing up liquid! Drinking water taps were however hard to find, but did exist.

The site has a small shop which sells fresh food including their own Guernsey milk. This was absolutely delicious and a pint of it went down very well after a day's walking.

Highlight of the area was definitely the Minnack theatre at Porthcurno, a short mile's walk across fields and along the coast path. Highly recommended.

Lovely friendly site, definitely worth a visit.

We spent a week here last summer (and had many family holidays here between 1991 and 1998). The site has remained quite basic although it has modernised a bit over the years. There is a new toilet block, new showers and a great room with freezers for keeping ice packs and food. The tent field, is tents only which is nice, and there is now a separate area for campervans. The location is peerless. The views out over the ocean are fantastic. The site is yards from the coastal path, you can walk to Penberth, to the Minack Theatre, or even to Lands End, which we did this time. The on site shop sells all the essentials. There is a cafe just down the lane with lovely cream teas, cakes etc. The Logan Rock Inn is just down the road. That has not changed much either and retains a wonderful atmosphere. They have expanded the garden at the back which is great, because it gets quite packed in the good weather. The food is fantastic. We loved this place for family holidays when the children were younger and we spent a lot of time on Sennen Beach but we found it equally fabulous going back as an older couple!

We finally got to try this site out as we had been promising ourselves to for quite a while. We were not disappointed. The showers were clean a warm welcome and although an electric hookup was not available they sorted one out from a disused caravan. We liked the turn up approach. It is about a 20 min walk from what we would consider to be one of the most stunning beeches in Cornwall ( only our opinion). You get a token per person per night for the shower and it is long enough for a good shower, but you can buy more. Very reasonable prices too. If you like coastal walking - get the bus from the bus stop by the pub to Lands End and do the walk back to Prthcurno/Treen - some stunning views along the way!

We had a great two-night stay. The site has a very relaxed and laid-back atmosphere. On our stay we had to register at 8am and then find out at 10:30 whether a pitch became available, luckily it did. It’s a fair way of dealing with people arriving and I quite like the idea of not allowing bookings; you have to make an effort to get in to the site! If you don’t get on, there is a field near the village car park where you can park up for the night to try again the following day.

The facilities on the campsite were always kept clean and the shower tokens allow long enough for a good shower (5 minutes). The site has good walks direct from the site and beaches are not a long walk away. The village pub is a short stroll away and serves good food and drink; there is also a small café in the village. The shop on site is well stocked and offers daily fresh bread and pasties and is also licensed.

A site we’ll return to when we venture this far down in to Cornwall again.

We stayed here as a family of five. It was really busy but we were happy to be allocated a spot (which takes some time during busy periods but staff are very friendly and helpful). Good showers, clean toilets and plenty of washing up sinks. The highlight of our stay was the communal fire pit-far away enough that it doesn't disturb other campers! We also walked to the local pub a few times so all in all a very pleasant experience.

Stayed for 1 night at this campsite when attending a concert at the amazing Minack theatre. This site is in a stunning location, a very short walk to the coastal path. The staff were friendly and helpful, prices very reasonable, facilities really clean and one thing I really liked was every pitch had its own picnic bench, very handy. We were lucky to have beautiful, sunny weather, just wish we could have stayed longer.

We've been meaning to visit this campsite for years but been put off by the fact you can't book, yet it is very popular.

We've just got back from a fantastic long weekend. We arrived at 6pm on the Friday before the May bank holiday / half term. The site was pretty full but there was still space (and even an electric hook up). Our friends got the last but one space when they arrived at 8pm.

Owners / reception staff are very helpful and friendly. Campsite shop well stocked and reasonable.

You get a shower token each included, additional are 25p. They last long enough for a good long shower. They did run out of hot water in the early evening.

Stunning beaches within walking distance. It's a steep climb down (particularly the last bit) to the nearest beach. The path to Porthcurno is much easier / kiddy friendly.

The positive of the no booking policy was the flexibility it gave us. We would have booked for 5 or 6 nights but as the weather was forecast to turn for worst we left after 3.

On balance we would prefer the option to book in advance. We are restricted to peak periods and although SW based it is a long way to travel with 2 young children with the possibility that we won't get in. We'd happily pay a deposit. I understand the owners are considering amending their policy. Perhaps they could take bookings for 50% of the pitches and the existing approach for the rest??

We'll certainly be regular visitors in future. We'd love to make it our main summer holiday base, but not sure we're brave enough to take pot luck on availability!

Due to the lack of booking we were lucky to get in to this campsite.

We usually camp in campsites that have less rules etc but due to this being a family campsite everything was very organised. You're told where to pitch and where to put your car. No noise after 10pm.

There is an on site shop which is useful.

Each pitch has a picnic table which is nice. There are freezers for ice packs and a washing machine and drier to use if needed (at a cost).

The location is great - really beautiful, remote setting with a gorgeous beach 20 minute walk away and the Minack theatre close by too. We cycled to Lands End which is about 4 miles away. There's a nice pub a short walk away with good food.

The showers were OK. They were clean and hot but not very powerful. You are given a token per person on arrival which lasts for 5 minutes and have to purchase any more for 25p. 5 minutes in my opinion is just not quite long enough.

This is definitely a family orientated campsite with lots of children. As a couple it felt a bit restricting as would liked to have played music but this wasn't really an issue.

All in all a lovely campsite and think they would benefit from allowing bookings.

Having noted the need to turn up early to be in with a chance of securing a spot at this sought after campsite, we turned up on Thursday 16th Aug for our 4 night stay just after 8 am to see an almost empty campsite. On checking in to secure a place, they said they had had winds gusting at 70 mph the previous night and many tents did not survive these conditions so almost everyone had left. As a newbie to camping this concerned me a little but my frame of mind was very much “give it a go” whatever the weather.

One of the owners, found us a very sheltered spot in the lower field by a hedge and given strong winds were forecast for the next 2 nights, we pitched our smaller tent. We survived with no problem: gusts were at about 50 mph with the hedge next to us taking the brunt of the force of the SW winds. Our larger tent (not the sturdiest it has to be said) was then put up and with a bit of judicious pegging and wind breaks just about survived heavy rain and 50 mph gusts over a few more nights. I have to emphasize we were quite sheltered here and am not sure of the outcome had we been elsewhere on the site with our flimsy tent. I want to return without the worry of being literally blown away so am investigating reviews of sturdier tents.

The campsite itself is just lovely: it has a small shop where you can buy your essentials and a good range of local produce. There is a men’s and women’s toilet block, another area at the rear of the shop where there are showers and also a washing machine (wash tabs provided and £3. 60 for a wash cycle) and tumble drier (coin op) plus a extension lead gang for charging mobiles etc. Also freezers for keeping freezer blocks frozen but not designed for food use. With the constant opening and shutting we found it hard to get our blocks refrozen in under 24 hours: given this, food stored there would not be safe to eat.

There are also 4 open air sinks around the exterior of the toilet block, for washing up: the water was always hot and plentiful and washing up liquid was provided (or left, not sure which). I found the showers, which run for 5 mins for a 25 p token, to be perfect: they were spacious and had hooks, benches etc for convenience and the water temperature and pressure was always just right.

The campsite does have electricity hook-ups in some but not all positions now but we didn’t need this so were fine without.

There seemed to be four areas to camp in, one to the left of the shop, no cars next to the tents and bordering the lane down to the beach and coastal path, another, again no cars allowed next to the tent, but just to the right of the new shower block, then our area, which allowed cars in front of the tents, and another area north of that and the toilet block, again with cars and I would say more exposed to winds.

There are breeze blocks provided which can be found by the bins to use to place your disposable BBQ on so it doesn’t burn the grass and there is a picnic table/bench for eating at in between each tent (all nicely spaced). It is to the owners’ credit that there is a refreshing lack of angry signage in bold block capitals with aggressive underlining and exclamation marks although I am sure some people must try even their considerable patience.

The site overlooks fields with grazing cows and the sea: we were there when the moon was almost full and it was quite stunning to take in the view of the sea silvered by its light on a relatively clear night. We ended up staying for 13 nights in the end as we loved it so much. On a fine sunny day you can walk down to Pedn Vounder beach, a delightfully beautiful sandy beach with turquoise waters.

It is an unofficial naturist beach and I felt it was very much “live and let live”: those who remained clothes mingled freely with those who were without. Dogs ran up and down and played in the surf or with each other and children and teens enjoyed body surfing in the waves. If you are of a Health and Safety mentality then accessing the beach via the cliff will freak you out: it is tricky and you could easily fall and hurt yourself but I enjoyed it immensely. If you have mobility issues then you would be better driving around the corner to Porthcurno beach which is also lovely. We also saw people fishing off Pedn Vounder beach and catching sea bass: we tried too but without success. On our last day we saw a couple of seals bobbing about in the waves.

We had a fair few miserable rainy and blustery days too and on these, took ourselves off sightseeing/food shopping. We overheard the pasties from the Horse and Jockey Bakery in Helston and Porthleven being given fulsome praise by a local (deserved indeed, we had a Cornish pasty which was delicious). Our prize find of the holiday was Southgates Cornish Crab shop, located in the you of the horseshoe at Porthleven Harbour, just south of Helston. You can buy 8 claws for about £5, utterly wonderful to sit on a sunny evening picking out the meat and dipping it in mayo with some crisp white wine to help it go down. Ask the owner to crack them for you which she will do to perfection. They also sell whole crabs (we bought 3 large ones on our way home), white and brown crab meat in pots and dressed crab, plus lobster by pre-arrangement. The crab is fresh, sweet and delicious. We bought frozen sardines and samphire from the fish shop round the corner from Southgates (just up from Boots) and had these on a BBQ of an evening. Other fish we bought from the Sainsbury’s at Helston as the fish shop prices were too steep for us unfortunately, although they had a lovely range of very good quality fresh fish (ling, line caught sea bass, turbot, whole cod, brill, Dover sole etc) but the Sainsbury’s bream and mackerel was still delicious eaten off the BBQ in the fresh air.

We bought clotted cream from Pengoon Farm at Nancegollan just north of Helston on the B 3302, £1. 40 for half a pound. Again a moment of simple heaven having this with some scones (warmed in foil on the BBQ) with fresh strawberries and tea late afternoon. We also visited the Lizard: the track to this is narrow and foreboding but persevere until you come to the area just in front of a small blue and white gift shop on the right where there is a small honesty box National Trust car park.

There is a path up to the beautiful white light house from here and a little cafe by the gift shop which has very friendly service and good quality food and drink:they do early evening meals here too with a BYOB policy. Going back to the campsite you will also undoubtedly pass a farm on your way called St Buryans’ Beef: we bought some beef shin on our way home and made a massaman curry with it tonight: it truly is melt in the mouth. Get your coolbox ready and freezer blocks frozen for some return home food shopping!

At the bottom of the track leaving Treen Farm and into Treen is a lovely small café by the public car park: we enjoyed a most delicious, if pricey at £4. 10, juicy bacon with brown sauce and egg butty here with coffee. Good place to start the day if the weather is a bit inclement or if you just fancy a lazy start to the day.

For evening entertainment, there is the Minack Theatre. If they are doing a musical you can hear them at the campsite. If you would like a closer view you can try to get tickets, even for sold out performances, by visiting the Box Office at about 6 pm when you may be able to buy some returns. I recommend paying the £1 to hire their padded seats (or take your own). We also visited Logan’s Rock the pub, about a 5 minute walk from the campsite: it was so-so: for us it did not seem particularly welcoming or friendly, and therefore we went just the once.

Despite the inclement weather this was a lovely place to be: we found it very restorative, equipped just enough to make life comfortable but not so overdone as to make you feel you were still at home. We loved it so much we very much hope to go back next year.

Our own kids are grown up now (but intending to come here with their respective partners following all our praise for this place) but it seemed great for young children: safe for them to run about, meet other kids and make friends. Child engendered noise died down around 10pm so their presence was not a problem for us.

The owners have a dog and the farm dogs from the vicinity love to visit to play ball with the kids: campers can bring their dogs too so if you are a dog-phobe it might be best to stay elsewhere.

Overall a lovely atmosphere, vibe and environment, hard to beat I think !

Just a few notes for would be campers at this site: You cannot pre-book a place.

When busy/full prospective campers must turn up at reception before 8am (when they open. ) A list of applicants is compiled and you are advised to return at 10. 30am to see if you have secured a place. People who have been turned away from the previous day may return and will have priority over that days customers. It feels like exam results day - will we or won't we succeed, what shall we do if we don't get in?

Unfortunately, I can't say that this is a system that works for me, we made preparations by using UKCampsite.co.uk to find alternatives before we left home, but by the time we'd played the waiting game it was 11am and I'd just about run out of energy having loaded the car the day before and started our drive at 6am. As luck would have it we were given the very last pitch of the day.

The facilities are fine - clean toilets, hot water for dishes, well stocked shop 8am - 7pm (summer. ) Right on the coastal path @ 40min walk to Porthcurno beach.

If you choose this site have a wonderful time - Cornwall is great!
