Just a few sites have such a magical location you could forgive them almost anything. And there's very little to forgive here except plain simplicity; just two flat fields with toilets and showers in utilitarian concrete sheds. But the location! It looks out from the cliff top over clear blue sea. Immediately below (a steep climb) is one of the finest beaches in UK. A short walk to the right is Porthcurno where there’s another sandy (textile) beach and where the unique Minack open air theatre clings to the cliff face over the sea.
There’s no light pollution here, so take a torch if you’re walking back after an evening performance. If you’ve a technical bent, don’t miss the the underground museum of submarine telegraphy. Behind the site, the Treen shop sells groceries, papers and serves cooked breakfasts. The pub serves lunches and dinners with excellent real ales. In both directions there are miles of wonderful cliff-top walking, with lovely granite rock formations that wouldn’t be out of place in the Tate.
This is a site just for tents and small motorhomes. Caravans and large motorhomes would stick in the narrow stony access lane. There are no marked pitches, but the site is well managed from the shop and they don’t let it get overcrowded. One section is designated car-free for hikers and cyclists. In several visits we’ve never found the water other than hot, or the toilets other than clean. For once the use of shower tokens is justifiable, otherwise passing hikers on the coast path would be sure to use them. A 25p token gives a generous 5 minutes, and the unisex cubicals are so spacious it's easy to wash children or for a couple to shower together (we did).
