Just spent two nights at the Royal Oak, turned up on spec having previously stayed on here. Monday evening had a meal on the patio.
The food was excellent just like last time, the staff are very helpful and friendly. Close enough to Ashbourne and Buxton to have days out in both.
There were quite a few Duke of Edinburgh participants, who to their credit weren't noisy at all, in fact the only noise was the extractor fan from the kitchen which went off around ten pm.
One slight concern the pot wash facility had no hot water and was a little grubby.
Would definitely recommend this site if only for the food 10/10

We stayed here with another family for the may bank holiday. The site was quite busy but there was still plenty of room. Staff were friendly and helpful. There were lots of cyclists on the site making the most of the trail that runs down the back of the site. We ate at the pub one night which we thought was good value and yummy.
The only thing that lets this site down is the toilets. They are very small and there are only 2 loos. This was not enough for a full campsite and the bunk barns which offer youth hostel type accommodation. The toilets were not that clean either (possibly because so many people were using them. )
That said I would visit this site again as it was friendly, just quiet/noisy enough (we like a bit of life going on around us) and was perfectly situated for exploring this beautiful part of the peaks.

Great location. Goes straight onto the tissington/high peak trail. Easy access for Bakewell/Buxton
Good pub. Good beers on draught :) Didn't try the food but it looked good and the pub was busy - going back when the weathers better as it rained whilst we were there.
Open air washing up facilities so when it rains you get a bit wet! - toilets and showers OK.
Ideal for those who want to take their bikes and expolore the Peak District

A nice site, although rather on the slope! We were in the lower field and after a very wet spell the field was very boggy - but this field is flatter than the top field.
A really good effort was made to try to keep the toilets and showers clean, but with the amount of mud in the field this was a challenge. But they were good facilities with plenty of hot water.
The only washing up station was right outside the toilet block.
The pub is great, food lovely, great choice and well priced.
We were greeted nicely on arrival and shown where we could pitch and everything was explained.
Nice after dinner strolls can be taken along the High Peak Trail at the bottom of the site.
Well placed site for Dovedale, Ashbourne etc.
Only thing missing was a form of play equipment for the children, but the amused themselves with the small rope swing by the trail.

A very nice and efficiently run pub, and some excellent flat cycle routes very close for great family cycling.
We were informed when pitching that the site is to be quiet after 10pm. However, on both weekend nights we stayed several large groups were drinking/talking well into the early hours, so be aware.
Showers block nice but no sign of being cleaned at all through the weekend we were there. Hot water rather variable too.
Potentially a very nice campsite, but clearly more suited to large groups of young people socialising than for families.

This was the first time my wife had ever been camping, so I was a little anxious about how she would find it. As it was she really enjoyed the experience and The Royal Oak was, I feel a good starting place.
We only stayed 2 nights but would have stayed longer if we could. The site is small and was very quiet. No kids running around or dogs barking either.
We pitched at the top of the upper field rather than run the risk of the lower field getting boggy if it rained. The facilities were perfectly acceptable.
The pub itself is really nice and welcoming although the drinks are a little pricey. We ate there on the Thursday night, booking in advance highly recommended as it was full.
The food was excellent, couldn't fault it at all, and the staff very polite. We would return to the site as it is positioned well for towns and countryside.

Had a 2 night stay, had to pitch on the top level, the ground was on a slope, bottom field is level.
Very clean site. Had a washing up area. Had evening meal in the Royal Oak the staff are very friendly, yes it was expensive but the portion size was huge well worth the money, children and dogs are allowed and there is a pool table, even some board games downstairs.
Would definitely visit this site again. There is no play area for children,
we went into Bakewell which is approx 5 miles away, well worth the visit.

My family (two adults, one 10 year old boy and one dog at £13 per night) visited the site for a very sunny weekend break. The staff in the adjoining Royal Oak are fairly young and extremely polite and efficient. The site and pub are very well run indeed. The site toilet facilities are quite small and looked newly refurbished. They were basic but clean and adequate. There were two loos in the ladies and 4 showers which were free. Didn't have to queue for the loo or a shower all weekend! The washing up facilities are located outside so if it rains, you get even wetter dishes! The site itself consists of two fields - the upper field slopes quite significantly and the lower is flat but quite rocky in places. We opted for the lower field and pitched easily, using rock pegs. There is plenty of room between pitches and you can choose where to pitch. The atmosphere is quietly intimate and noise at night was respectfully minimal even though there were 2 stag parties present when we went.
The Royal Oak is a small but atmospheric pub with real ales and fantastic food. It is highly advisable to book when you book the site as it gets very busy. The food was amazing - the best we've had in years. My 'Beef and Stilton Pie' was to die for - home-made chips to accompany and a delicious selection of desserts. The pub is child and dog friendly and our pooch sat under our table, happily soaking up all those tempting smells. £54 bill for a main and dessert for us all.
The site has a small gate at the back which leads straight onto the High Peak trail - turn right and the path forks right after a short while onto the Tissington trail. We followed this by bike to Tissington and back but could have gone further. The trail is flat and easy to follow and the campsite couldn't be better suited to those who'd like to explore it. The trail being so close means great dog-walking opportunities too.
We will definitely be returning to the site again and rewarding our hard day's work cycling with another delicious meal at the pub! All in all, a great, value for money site for a short stay and we'll be returning for a weekend away.

Really good site for camping. The pub, whilst mainly a 'foody' pub was equally amenable for 'just drinks' and the staff really friendly (found this also when booking. )
The ladies facilities were very small and disappointingly the showers were rather tepid. This was when there was just 3 tents on the field (before the Friday rush!) Bit disappointing seeing as you are paying £13 per night.
That said, the site is in a great location (for walking although there isn't a local shop) and the food at the pub excellent!

We spent 2 nights here with friends and family. Set in lovely surroundings, the site was very basic but value for money. The ladies toilets and shower block was small with no room to move and at times became very cramped and very wet to say the least. To be fair though the facilities have been upgraded in the last few years so if you use them when the cleaner has just been in they are fine.
The staff were extremely courteous and friendly.
We ate at the restaurant on our last night. The pub is small so it is advisable to book a table. The food was fantastic; good quality, mostly reasonably priced, served with a smile and I am told the game pie was to die for! Would definitely recommend this site.
