We stumbled across this site after firstly visiting the campsite in Monyash which we found unkempt, then we tried The Bull In The Thorn which we decided against due to the A road next to it which was noisy and only one tent. It was at this time that we had to quickly find another site as the kids and dog where getting restless so we tried this one and was very glad that we did. Situated about half a mile from the main road you still get some road noise but minimal in comparison to the others we'd tried so we thought we'd give it a go.
We stayed for three nights which cost a superbly cheap £13 a night for two adults, three kids and our dog which was fantastic! It offers basic but clean facilities and only caters for tents and motor homes but no caravans. Everyone was very friendly and the pub was good for food which we had on our last night. Would definitely visit again due to its close proximity to some very nice walks and stately homes and grounds.

Good friendly little campsite, top field on bit of a slope but bottom field level. Good, clean well kept facilities. Can't remember the exact cost but it wasn't expensive.
Camp site next to the pub which has good ales and wonderful food at decent prices. It is a good place for walking and especially biking as it right on the High Peak / Tissington trail, its possible to do a circular ride of about 14 miles so not too far or difficult.
Bikes can be hired about two miles away at Parsley Hay. Would recommend, we will be returning again sometime this year.

This site is 6 miles south of Buxton just off the Ashbourne road. We only stayed the one night, but what a little gem it is. It is perfectly situated for exploring the area.
The site is on a hill, built on three terraces, so to speak. We drove into the pub carpark and took a minute or 2 to figure out you take the next right at the rear and then enter the camping field at the top.
At the bottom of the hill is the old railway sidings, which are now a cycle/path.
The pitches are slopes of varying degrees dependant on where you pitch.
There is a long bunk house at the top of the hill behind the pub, this houses the toilets and showers.
There are 3 toilets, 1 urinal and 3 showers (free) in the men’s (My wife said the ladies are the same as the men’s minus the urinal (what would women want with a urinal!).
They were very clean and new looking, plenty of hot water, with a notice to make sure you turn them off completely, so that there is enough for everyone. The shower cubicles are a bit snug for dressing, but that is not really an issue.
The dish washing facilities are at the side of the bunk house as was the fresh water.
The Royal Oak itself has a great menu selling local produce and a few real ales. The hospitality of the staff was second to none.
Note you have to book a table for the evening and we didn't, but managed to get one until 08:30. There isn't much room in the pub to stand and drink, so booking is highly advisable.
There was a little background noise from the main A road, but it is a distance away and managed to block it out.
We have said that we will be going back and will book a table in advance next time.
We didn't have the kids with us, so haven't commented on child friendliness apart from 50/50, but the site was quiet and child safe. Most cars seemed to stay at the top of the site on the gravel once they had pitched.
I did notice a review from a trailer tent; we only took our small backpacker, but will take the trailer in future. Not sure how you managed on the hill with it, plus levelling.
Did not check to see if electric was available, but we have managed without in the past.

A really nice site which is in 2 fields behind the pub- which seems to be really nice. We got there quite late friday so pitched and had a bbq. Sat am was nice weather so we walked along the old railway trail- definitely need the bikes next time as the site is right on the trail too.
The brand new toilets are the main plus here- excellent and what is needed at so many other UK sites. Well done Royal Oak.
There were a few on the site but no excessive noise despite a 40th party on-going next door. A really friendly site and cheap too at £12.50 per night.
We will definitely be returning.

Great site for doing the Tissington trail as it runs across the bottom of the site. Had a lovely meal in the cosy pub, though this did mean that it felt freezing when we came outside to go to our tent.
The site was quiet at night, didn't hear noise from the pub, though we were there midweek. I did notice the noise of early morning lorries from the A road across the valley.
We had pretty miserable weather, but it was sunny on the day we left, and it was lovely to take a morning stroll along the trail.
I would say the only 'downside' is the slope, though I think the bottom part of the site is flatter, but stonier.

A group of friends stayed for 2 nights, we were a mixture of adults and children. Although the weather was not brilliant there were still a few brave campers.
The site was generally well maintained and shower facilities were clean with plenty of hot water. We ate in the pub on the 2nd night, the food was excellent and the staff couldn't do enough for us. I would definitely recommend eating there, but you will probably have to book, especially if you are a larger party.
The surrounding area is stunning with plenty to do. We opted for Chatsworth House, only about 20 mins away. Definitely worth a visit, if you book online prior to going you can save time and money. Fantastic day out for adults and children. Will hope to get another visit to the campsite in before the weather turns even worse.

We found this delight of a site late in the day. We were made extremely welcome and the facilities were some of the best I have met and very very clean. With us arriving late we didn't eat in the pub but the food looked great and smelt very tempting.
It is a very relaxed site with good basic rules that ensures everyone has a nice visit. No noise after hours or big groups partying. Well behaved dogs are welcomed so I will be taking my 3 legged springer Molly with me next time and I hope many times more after that as I cannot praise this site enough.

This is a nice site that we've visited before and would certainly visit again. The main draw is the proximity to the Tissington Trail, which is an excellent amenity if you have energetic kids with bikes.
The cafe at Parsley Hay is only 2 miles south and makes a pleasant outing. Off the trail Earl Sterndale to the west, with it's curiously shaped hills (ancient coral reefs from when the limestone was laid down) and equally curiously named and quaint Quiet Woman pub, is worth a visit. Pomeroy, Flagg and Monyash also make a nice pub circuit. The Bull's Head at Monyash has an excellent adjoining playground and beer garden at the rear. Food seemed good but not cheap.
Our friend, who booked the site, reported that he was required to pay in full on making the booking. This seemed a bit much, although £13 per night for a tent, 2 adults and 2 children is quite reasonable these days. Clearly site owners need to protect themselves against no-shows, but losing the whole amount would seem excessive. A deposit would seem a reasonable compromise. You are also now given a tag to fasten to your guy ropes to show you have paid.
As for the site itself, the lower field is flatter and we stayed there this time. It is very rocky and I would strongly recommend rock pegs, although our friends managed with wire ones with a little judicious use of a hammer. We have previously camped quite comfortably at the top of the upper field.
The Tissington trail is definitely the main amenity for children, with no playground for the younger ones. We took bikes and a few bats and balls and our crew were quite happy. They particularly enjoyed playing in the 'woods', which were in fact no more than a strip of trees alongside the trail where they could be seen at all times.
As stated elsewhere, the toilets and showers are quite new and generally well kept; although my wife reports the ladies' were awash all through the Saturday we were there - apparently from overflowed showers, so nothing too ghastly. However they weren't clear until the next day. My wife also echoed someone else's comment that somewhere to put stuff by the sinks would be welcome. Showers had plenty of hot water.
My only real criticism was that there does not appear to be a chemical toilet disposal point. This means rinsing the cassette out when you get home unless you use the hose by the washing up sinks. However, I believe this is the tap intended for drinking water, although there is no sign to clarify this. In case anyone had made an error here I decided to fill up our drinking water in the washing up sinks.
Speaking of the washing up sinks, there are two of these, uncovered and only one has a draining board. There appeared to be a plentiful supply of hot water. I didn't notice if they were lit but I'd suggest a definite area for development. For anyone interested there is a camping barn over the toilets but we don't know much about this.
My main worry with pub sites is that they may be full of noisy people intent on a boozy night out without having to drive home, however this definitely did not seem to be the case here. Sure, one or two of our fellow campers probably used the pub, but we sat up late (hopefully quietly) and certainly did not notice any untoward noise.

Great site. Owners couldn't be more helpful, let us put our bikes in one of the sleeping barns for safety. Very handy for tissington and high peaks trails and the Manifold valley. Buxton and Hartington are close by too
The food in the pub is excellent and the staff extremely friendly
Free showers. Toilets adequate. Pot washing facilities available
Will be going back even if its only for a meal.

On arriving at The Royal Oak my Wife and I were made very welcome the staff being polite and friendly. We stayed on a monday and tuesday and were spoilt for choice of pitches choosing to put our tent up on the lower flat area. The toilet block was modern and well maintained. On our second evening we had a meal at the pub, the food was excellent well presented at a reasonable price, better than many restaurants. The Royal Oak is not far from Bakewell and Chatsworth House which is well worth visiting needing a full day to see the house and the gardens.
