The location is very good, with easy access into Buxton (10-15 mins drive up the A515). There are no shops within walking distance though.

The site was very busy on the Friday, full on the Saturday and nearly empty on the Sunday. Noise was not a problem though, fellow campers seemed respectful of others. I was a little worried about overcrowding but there was enough space and we weren't on top of one another. Road noise from the A515 was distant if you heard it at all, despite how close it was. Sheep were louder, but that's part of the countryside!

The top field is slightly sloping, the bottom field a bit flatter. I was a little disappointed with the condition of the grass, a little more TLC would be good, but it didn't get muddy in the top field despite the rain, and the main track through the site is gravelled. Can't say anything for the bottom field, but the top field drained well.

You can pitch where you like, which despite my doubts, didn't prove problematic despite the number of people in the site.

The facilities are very nice - newly refurbished. The gents has 4 shower cubicles and 3 sinks. Plus two toilet cubicles and one urinal (its all in the detail!). The showers are free and are lovely and warm with good pressure. The bathroom did get busy on the Sunday morning, but chose your time carefully and there isn't a problem.

There is a note in the bathroom stating that if you spend more the 5 minutes in the shower a siren will blast across the campsite. I didn't hear the siren once, and think this might have been a bit of a rouse!

There is an outside washing up sink with hot water (but no shelter).

As others have said, the pub food was superb. Suggest you book a table in advance. The service in the pub was very friendly indeed and I would take great pleasure in working my way one by one through their entire menu!

The only part of the campsite that disappointed me was the cleaning. It didn't get very dirty and the toilets seemed to be cleaned regularly, but the bathroom was suffering by the end of the weekend, nothing a quick wipe down with soapy water wouldn't have cured. Given the effort put in upgrading the facilities I was surprised at the lack of care, especially as we were paying £12 a night.

All in all I would go back. Yes there are a few minor issues, but nothing that would put me off, especially given the nice warm showers and quality of the food.

We are just back from this campsite and we had a great time. The pitches were good, the shower block has free, powerful and warm showers. There was only two toilets but this was never a problem even though the campsite was full. And at £12 a pitch really good value for money.

The pub is fantastic, food was great and really good value for money. My one tip is to book a table for the evening when you get there as we only just managed to get in.

I would recommend this campsite to anyone and am sure we will be back again soon.

We visited this campsite on a busy and hot bank holiday weekend after the campsite we originally wanted to book was full. We were glad it was as this campsite was wonderful!

We paid £12 per night per tent and could pitch wherever we wanted to on the site. The ground was a bit rocky in places but we all managed to secure our tents easily.

The toilet facilities were basic but ample for a couple of nights camping. There were separate men's and ladies toilets with shower facilities. The only criticism is that they got rather dirty on the second day but it was a very busy bank holiday.

The campsite ran alongside the Tissington Trail and this seemed to be very popular with the people on the campsite. We chose to drive to ten minute journey to Monyash and do a 8 mile walk around Lathkill Dale.

The best part of the campsite is the pub! We visited once on the Sunday evening for a drink and found the pub to be welcoming and cosy and then again the Monday for lunch. The food was amazing - we will be sure to return very soon just for the food!

We visited this site for three mostly rainy days during the Easter Holidays 2009.

Much work has been done since previous reviews.

New shower block, with free excellent showers and ample hot water even when they are all being used. There are now hook in the cubicles.

The field we camped in slopes, but not too much. And there is another field which has been levelled and looks excellent. Whilst it was wet the ground drained very well.

The best thing about this site is the pub. Previous reviews mention the excellent food and service, and this cannot be rated highly enough. The food is just superb. Whilst in Buxton we coincidentally visited the butcher who supplies the pub, and they are excellent too. The pub staff were helpful, and friendly and are working hard to make this a really good site. We looked into the camping barn while there, and this is new, clean and tidy.

We will definitely be returning, even if only to eat there and fall into the tent at the end of the evening.

Oh, and the surrounding countryside is very pleasant to - a good location.

All in all, highly recommended.

A small and basic site situated in lovely surroundings in the grounds of the Royal Oak pub. The site is clean and well maintained with heated toilet block. Free showers, although you do have to dance around a bit to get wet! Outside dishwashing which could be a bit of a problem in wet weather. Good recycling bins available.

Royal Oak itself is a fantastic lovely old pub with a roaring fire in winter. The staff are very welcoming and friendly. The food though is fantastic - superb menu with absolutely stunning food at a very reasonable price. Can't wait to go back there.

The surrounding area is ideal for cyclists/walkers as it is right on the cycle paths and only a couple of miles from the Tissington Trail.

Thoroughly recommend it!

This could be a lovely campsite. It has so many good points:

Great location just steps from the Tissington Trail, minutes from Buxton, Hartington, Monyash. Several local walks without moving the car. Excellent for cyclists.

Good flat camping surrounded by trees for protection.

Great to be near a pub!

Small site with just tents.

But the problem is with the facilities. The pub facilities are lovely - spotless, modern and impressive: but the campsite facilities are cobbled together

There are 2 toilets for the ladies and 2 for the gents and 2 showers each too. But the floors and the sinks and the toilets are not cleaned regularly. There was mud and dirt all over the shower floor so it was difficult to get dressed without becoming dirtier. The showers were free though and the water lovely and hot.

There was no hot water for washing up - just a sink attached to an outside wall - no canopy. The drinking water also had hose attachments and were situated in the toilet area (not so good for hygiene).

We asked if they could clean up but they didn't. We suggested they might like to to put a mop so we could clean the floor after we'd showered to help prevent the 'daily' build up of mud - but they didn't.

Maybe it was just the contrast to the pub's facilities but we were disappointed.

But if they clean the toilets and showers, get hot water to the washing up sink, put a shelf in the toilets for 'stuff' and invest in a couple of mops and buckets, then we'd go back. So please let me know if they do.

Basic site with a small area that is level (great for our camper van) and a sloping field used by Tents on our visit.

Clean toilets and free hot showers.

Big on recycling and all bins clearly labeled

Dish washing basic only cold water and outside (not so great in rainy weather) and not sure where the drinking water point was.

The two main plus points of this campsite that means will will definitely return is firstly :

The pub the Royal Oak and all its staff, Paul the owner is fantastic very obliging and helpful as were all the staff in the pub especially Josh and the more mature woman behind the bar.

The food was excellent some of the best pub food we have had in ages. Chef even made a special veggie meal for us not on the menu as we had had all the other veggie meals the night before.

3 Real ales all in excellent condition.

Secondly right by the Tissington traffic free cycle trail and only 2 miles max from Parsley Hay cycle hire from where you can also do 13 miles on the High Peak traffic free cycle trail .
