Very good site.
Owners were friendly and didn't insist on red tape such as registration cards etc - just pay when you get there and abide by the common sense rules. Ground was soft and stone-free, so easy to pitch tent. Two areas, we camped in the upper field (with a slight slope) in the corner overlooking the cows in the next field. Brand new toilet / shower / washing facilities with endless hot water.
Royal Oak food was outstanding - the pork fillet in grand marnier sauce with black pudding mash was particularly delicious.
Outstanding location - 5 minutes to hire bikes for the Tissington and High Peak trails (which goes right past the campsite) and 15 minutes to either Buxton or Bakewell, both lovel bustling towns. Recommend the butchers in Buxton - Arnold Mycock.
Will definitely return - hope the owners will put up a shelf above the sinks in the washrooms for washbags and consider getting the children's sausages from Mycocks rather than from the cash & carry.

This is a pleasant place to stay for a night or two. The camping is in the field to the rear of the pub. There is a camping barn too.
The facilities are good. Enough toilets and showers to minimise queuing. The field is on an incline. Being in a bit of a valley, there is not too much noise from the nearby A515. The Tissington Trail is next door, which offers the chance to explore and is quite a flat walk.
The pub is good. Friendly staff and quality meals, but a little bit on the expensive side (although worth it).

Went here for a very pleasant weekend away with friends during the latter half of August. We were initially wary of a campsite behind a pub in case of rowdiness but this was definitely not the case here. The clientèle seemed to be a mix of families (with and without children) and outdoors types using the site as a base or a stopover. Tents and the odd camper van were in evidence but no caravans. The site is tucked away off the A515 and, although you can see the odd taller vehicle we didn't notice significant road noise. It is on the flight path into Manchester Airport and, while we quite enjoyed watching the aircraft, others might not like this. The noise isn't loud at all, however. On the subject of noise, the landlord was very emphatic about the no noise after 10pm rule, and indeed we noticed none. In addition to the camping field there is a camping barn in the same building as the wash facilities. These apparently have bunks with mattresses rather than the more traditional wooden platforms.
The camping field is in two halves, situated right next to the High Peak Trail, with a convenient gateway to access this. On arrival we checked in at the bar and the lady took us out to show us the site. The lower half of the field is flatter, however when I asked we were told that the drainage there was OK but not brilliant and campers were asked to return their car to the top field after unpacking for this reason. We overheard other campers saying that the lower field was very rocky and it was difficult to get pegs in. Owing to the price difference (£12 for up to a 4 berth tent but £20 for anything bigger) we had taken our smaller tent and therefore needed to store things in the car. We therefore used the upper field, which has a significant though not insurmountable slope. It was, however, less busy than the lower field and generally very easy to put in the pegs.
The facilities were brand new for this year and, although limited in size, seemed to cope well during a reasonably busy weekend. They were kept clean, however we felt that four showers and only two toilets (plus one urinal) in the gents was probably the wrong combination and more toilets would have been preferable. Showers were free, though, with just a light-hearted request to limit usage. Just a word of warning here - there is no chemical disposal point, which is a bit of a nuisance. The pot washing sinks were sufficient but not covered, so we were glad it didn't rain during our stay. Ample hot water, though. Also there are no electric hook ups and no shop. We didn't check it out but would imagine the nearest shop would be in Monyash or one of the other villages. There is a Morrisons about 4 miles away towards Buxton.
There is no children's play area, although we weren't expecting that from a site of this type. The pub itself is very nice with a selection of ales, including from the local brewery plus a good range of competitively priced food. We didn't check but I imagine that the Stilton used was local. We ate in the pub on arrival and were well pleased. The food was tasty and with generous portion sizes and nice children's meals (chicken goujons which appeared to be home made and not frozen and fresh butcher's sausage). We were informed on arrival that if we wanted to eat in the pub in the evenings we would need to book early as they get very busy. Indeed the staff, whilst generally friendly and obliging, were fully engaged in running the pub and not really in evidence on the campsite, although this in itself was not a problem.
All in all a very pleasant site with stunning scenery all around and plenty of scope for walking and cycling. We would certainly use the site again.

We have just returned from a 1 night stay at this campsite. £12.00 for 2 of us with a dog, very reasonable. We had not booked and the site was very busy however they managed to squeeze us on. We actually got a good spot tucked away in the corner on a raised section at the end of the lower field, ground soft and easy to pitch. Nice quiet site set in a scenic location.
Facilities good, nice hot showers which are free. Floor got a bit muddy and the actual shower cubicles are quite small but good enough. Never had to queue.
The Royal Oak pub is superb. Lovely country pub atmosphere. The landlord and landlady are the nicest people you could meet as are all the staff. They can not do enough for you. They were fully booked for the Saturday night for meals but we were told to just go in anyway and they would sort something out. We went in at 8.15, the place was packed but within 10 minutes we were seated and our order had been taken. Gorgeous home made food, plenty of choice, very reasonably priced and huge portions. Only wish we could have fit a home made pud in!
Would definitely recommend this site for couples and family groups and we will be going back

The setting is lovely in a picturesque valley right next to the start of the Tissington Trail. The food in the pub is very nice but you need to book in advance and it isn't cheap. The camp site is on a slope and its quite a big one. We kept waking up to get back on to the bed. I do believe some pitches are better than others though. There are only four showers and two toilets.
No electricity at all.
We had a nice time but wasn't perfect.
No shops near by.

Arrived on a Thursday and the site was fairly quiet. The lower field is right next to the High Peak trail (Hurdlow station) and just 2 miles from the top end of Tissington trail at Parsley Hay (accessed via the High Peak trail).
We chose to pitch on the lower field but drove up a small ramp to a mid level plateau where we found a a nice secluded large & private pitch where we were able to park the car as well for extra storage. The staff at the pub kindly unlocked storage rooms for us to keep bicycles safe & sound.
This site was lovely and quiet on the first night, however the nearby 'Bull in the Thorn' pub on the A515 (where a Moped rally was taking place) blared music until 3am on both Fri & Sat night which totally ruined the peace of this site and the whole surrounding area. Amazed that this kind of thing can happen in the middle of a National Park without police interference.
Newly refurbed toilet blocks are lovely and well kept - yes they got a bit muddy when the site was full but this is to be expected - its not a 5 star hotel! We frequently saw staff cleaning the blocks and although the water pressure was hit and miss, hot water was always available and even when the site was full there was never a queue.
I would absolutely recommend this site and I would definitely recommend the pub for some grub too. The meal was great and the area offers lots of places to walk it off afterwards!

We spent three nights at the Royal Oak, arriving on Thursday after a pretty soggy week of rain. We’d picked here after plenty of reading on UKCampsite, especially as one of our group was a first time camper and we didn’t want to scare her off! We were welcomed by one of the staff in the pub - he told us that the lower field is flatter but can get a bit muddy with the water draining off the hill (it was his job to mow the fields, so insider knowledge I guess!).
The site was pretty much empty when we arrived, so we had a good choice of pitches. We spent Friday out walking and returned around tea-time, at which point the site was filling up. It didn’t get over crowed though. The site is generally quiet, with not much traffic noise as the A515 is shielded behind a hill.
The toilet facilities are apparently new for 2009 and were great. Plenty of piping hot water for the showers (for which we never had to queue). The floors did get a little muddy at times but what can you expect when it’s a typical British summer? Dish washing is done on some outside sinks, but again, no shortage of hot water.
As previously mentioned, the food and drink served in the pub is excellent. The fish in the fish & chips could be mistaken for Moby Dick! Good beers, especially the local brews of Hartington Bitter and IPA. The staff in the pub are really friendly. If you do plan to eat in the pub, it is worth booking a table in advance. After eating in on the Thursday night, we booked a table for the Friday night but the only time we could get for four people was 8.30pm. Not a problem for us but worth noting.
A definite thumbs-up for the site as our novice camper is already asking where we are going next!

Our first camping experience! Found a brilliant spot and pitched at the side of our friends.
Facilities clean and plenty of hot water.
Only downside was invaded by what I think was a youth club/school that pitched their tents then preceded to kick their ball constantly into our tent. Laughing shouting and giggling kept us up late and then they were up doing the same at 5.30am! Couldn't wait to get home for some sleep.

Just spent a weekend at this site. Arrived Friday lunchtime and a few of the best spots already taken. The lower field, a few yards from the High Peak Trail, is more level but quite a lot of stone to contend with when putting in the pegs. As previously mentioned the number of showers and toilets is limited but despite the campsite being very busy they just about coped. I was a little worried when I saw a large group (4 tents and a gazebo) setting up but there was not too much noise during the evening or into the night. Our group had 6 adults, 4 children and a dog so we probably made as much noise as anyone else. It really is in the middle of nowhere and great for walking straight from the campsite. Will probably be going back again.

A lovely little campsite. As everyone has mentioned the pub does great food and beer. A little on the pricey side but huge portions and top quality food. The kids were made welcome.
The new facilities could have done with more toilets and fewer showers. The 4 shower cubicles crammed in along one wall make each one very snug. It's hard to dry and get dressed in - especially as mentioned elsewhere the floors get muddy and are only cleaned once a day.
There is hot water to wash up with - not sure how the previous reviewer missed it.
The lower section by the Tissington trail is pan flat but hard ground - remember your mallet. The other fields have a slight slope. £24 for 4 adults, 2 kids 2 nights make it great value.
Will definitely be back again.
