My wife and I have just returned from 10 nights at Bowdens, and we really enjoyed the holiday. Facilities are excellent, and the owners are extremely friendly and helpful. The bar is very nice, and the food is fine, nothing special, although the owner went out of his way to accommodate my egg allergy and was very attentive. Our overall experience of Bowdens Crest was positive.

However, I want to make a couple of points in the name of balance, as I picked the site based on reviews here, and there are some things that I would have liked to have known before I arrived at Bowdens Crest. Not criticisms so much as just potentially useful information.

1. The ground is very hard. This is mentioned on their website, and it has been a very dry summer of course, but we still weren't prepared for it to be almost solid rock under the grass! Luckily we borrowed a kind camper's club hammer and bought some rock pegs on site.

2. There is a kennels pretty much next door to the campsite, so be prepared for the sound of barking dogs in the background if you stay in a tent here.

3. We got the impression that tents come very much second to caravans in the pecking order here. Caravans/EHU pitches are situated around the edges of a small field, with the tents somewhat crammed into the middle of the field, with not much space at all between pitches. The view from the restaurant is lovely, but our view was of next door's car, about 2 feet away from our tent!

Obviously we went at the busiest time, in the August summer holiday period, but we just felt very crammed-in, and were pleased we had made the extra effort to hammer in our windbreak to give us a bit of breathing space from the tents all around ours.

The close proximity to the caravans meant that we could often hear people's TVs a little bit, and to top it off, there was often construction work going on, on the bungalow next door, even on a Sunday night up to 7pm, although there is not a whole lot the campsite owners could do about this, and to be fair they did go round and ask them to stop, but it didn't help our frustration at not being able to get the peace and quiet we were hoping for.

Like I said, these are not so much criticisms, and we had a really lovely holiday.

We would not return to Bowdens Crest, but this is simply because this is not really our kind of site, and is no reflection on the quality of the site or facilities, which are excellent.

I just want people to know that if you want a place to take your kids for a safe, fun holiday, then Bowdens Crest is ideal. However, if you are after tranquillity and a bit of space, then you might be better looking elsewhere.

Booked this site about a fortnight in adavce and paid £25 per night for a tent with 2 adults & 3 kids including EHU. The site is situated high above the Somerset town of Langport, this has a Tesco which was handy for supplies.

It is a small site with some static caravans and seasonal pitches. The camping field had hook ups around the edge with tents in the centre. The ground was not entirely level and a little bit stony in places. We had some heavy rain and it did not get too muddy.

We did not see much of the owners. They man the shop which sells essentials from 8am to 8pm and can be summoned with the ring of a bell. There is also a small clubhouse / restaurant with good views from the outside tables.Behind this is a children's play area.

There were ample toilets and free showers plus a family bathroom which we always found to be clean. There is the usual chemical disposal point and a covered area for washing up. The site also has a laundry room with washers and dryers that take £1 coins. This room also had a fridge/freezer for campers to use free of charge.

We had a pleasant stay with the only downside being noisy campers after 12 midnight. I do not think the owners had any rules about this.

We visited the campsite for a short break and loved the whole experience of the campsite. On arrival the owner was very helpful and even asked us if we would like papers ordering for the next day (great first impression).

Once at our pitch we found the area was a good size and not to far a walk to all the amenities. Found the toilet block clean and functional and added advantage of having laundry room which was great. The Games room we found out to be multi functional as it held all sorts of information on where to go.

Murphys Bar we found out to be a really good asset to the campsite. The food was great and at a reasonable price. We tried the takeaway and eating in and found that the service was really good. They catered for our one year old greatly and really looked after us. The beer was good quality and reasonably priced.

The view was something to really appreciate.

One slight downer is the children's play area was not idealy suited for young children.

We had a great time at a very good campsite and would recommend it to others. Definitely will be going back.

Stayed at Bowdens Crest for an overnight stop on the way back North from Cornwall.

Nice, friendly welcome. Well laid out site with separate area for statics and tourers and seasonal vans. Toilet / shower facilities all good. Shop open 08.30 to 20.30 just ring bell when you need anything.

Excellent restaurant and bar with very reasonable prices for eating in and takeaway meals. Lovely scrumpy cider too!

Good sized games room with books / dvds / videos. Outside paly area for kids. Free wifi around reception / bar / games room area, just ask for log on code.

Excellent walking just off site for dog owners into nearby woodland. Dog sitting at kennels just up the lane available (some noise heard from this but not to an annoying level).

Lovely views from rear of restaurant area out over the Somerset levels.

Papers available to order - pay on collection.

Only one comment - the hard standing for pitches 1 & 2 need upgrading as not level and a bit lacking in hard standing material. On the plus side there is a water tap immediately adjacent to pitches.

Good digital tv reception.

Langport village is a 5 minute drive with good selection of shops/Tesco and Chinese and Indian takeaways.

Would definitely use again.

Stayed for 7 nights over Easter. Weather was very wet on arrival (Good Friday) but got better. Site was lovely, really friendly and welcoming. Very clean facilities, good games room for the kids, Bar served great food and was excellent value.

Pitches were level, Shop stocks basics and you can order newspapers. Kids (aged 8 & 11) loved playarea and made lots of friends. Showers etc are all free and there was never any queues. Friendly owners who put themselves out to help if they can.

Visited Wookey Hole, Glastonbury & Clarks village whilst there - Wookey bit on the expensive side but Glastonbury is a Must! Will revisit when in the area - Somerset has such a lot to see and do!

Just returned from Bowdens. Despite the wet weather we had a lovely time. Pitches are spacious and well drained. Toilets and showers are spotless and there is even a bathroom which was very useful to bath our two year old. The owners are very friendly and welcoming and nothing is too much trouble.

The bar/restaurant serves good food and at reasonable prices - the views from there are splendid.

You definitely need a car to get around as the site is in the middle of no-where, however we knew this before we arrived and therefore were happy to drive to the nearest town.

Only negative about the site was the children's playground - it was located on a steep hill and obviously needed some TLC.

We will definitely return to this site - hopefully the sun will shine next time.

This is how a campsite should be run! Set high up overlooking the Somerset Levels, with no road noise at all.Just the birds. The road (or should I say farm track!) leading up to the site, off the A road, is pretty small but does have a few passing places. You are greeted with a very warm welcome on arrival by owners Ken & Ang (what a lovely couple!).

Mainly grass pitches but some hardstandings available. The reception also houses a small but well equipped shop and daily newspapers can be ordered each day. Shower block has gents, ladies, family/disabled shower room and a family bathroom - all spotlessly clean and very warm. There is also a laundry room with undercover washing up area, chemical disposal point, a games room, and a large dog walking area (all with great views) and the all important poo bins (which are also dotted around the site).

BUT the best bit of all. Murphys Bar & Restaurant which again has the most wonderful views of the Somerset Levels (even in the rain!). Reasonably priced beer and cider and good home-cooked food (cooked by Ken to order). Ken's chips are up there with the best! Dogs allowed in both the bar and the restaurant. At £10 per night for our motorhome, 2 people, dog and EHU (upto 25th March) that's what I call great value! I gather the site have just won their first award and from what I can see it is VERY WELL DESERVED! Thanks for your hospitality Ken & Ang - we will be back!

A lovely site, clean, well maintained and friendly. The toilets were the cleanest I have ever come across on a campsite. The only few tiny little niggles would be the extractors in the showers have fudd all over them and the shelf above the washing up sinks both need a clean.

The shop stocks the basics. It is clean and is reasonably priced, as is the bar with a good choice of drinks.

The food offered is basic but excellent value for money and tasty - even if it is a bit light on the salad and veg front.

The nearest town (Langport) is worth a visit and is within walkable distance, has some lovely quaint shops and a Tescos. You will have to be prepared to use a car to go anywhere else as there is little to do in the immediate area.

Outside there is a picnic area with nice views and a well maintained children's play area. There is a separate field for walking dogs and they are allowed everywhere except the shop and by the children's play area - all in all my son had a brilliant time, as did the dog.

Not a site to visit if you are wanting your entertainment laid on, but for a quiet family site I would thoroughly recommend it.

I will be going back soon.

In their instructions to get to the site, they need to advise about the very sharp left turn up a one track steep hill. We were met by traffic coming down, it was a nightmare. Out of all the pitches on the site, most were seasonal pitches, leaving around 8 with holiday makers in. The facilities were ok, in Finnish wooden units, they looked lovely, I will grant them that. The laundry was expensive for a domestic washing machine on a campsite. The games room was very good and reasonably priced. The bar looked and was lovely and very good prices. The play ground was on a very steep hill and you had to have excellent balance to stay on the wooden logs. As for the ball area, a steep hill not fenced off and if your ball escaped you would have lost it. No ball games allowed on site.

We stayed At this site in June and thought it was laid out very well and very clean. We thought the bar was good value, much cheaper than the local pub.And the food was very reasonably priced. If you want A le carte you will not get it here but you can get it within a four minute drive away. There is a shop on site that is well stocked the toilets are spotless, and the view is fab over the levels. There is a tescos and a petrol station also four minutes drive away. In fact we sold our van and bought a static on site. It is in a great position for getting to Devon, Dorset, Cornwall, or s.Wales.

We live in Rochdale.250 Miles away but well worth the journey.
