Just back from our first visit to Penrose and we already hope to come back next year.
Staff couldn't have been nicer, didn't need to disturb them as we had no problems but whenever you saw someone they were pleasant and asked if you were ok. Someone always out looking after the site.
Toilet and shower block always clean. Whenever we went to the showers there was plenty of hot water however getting the right temperature took time. Never had to queue for a shower.
Kids play area brilliant didn't see the kids most of the time.
Overall great site could just do with better phone signal or maybe wifi.

We booked Penrose for the first week of our summer road trip as it sold itself as exactly the thing we looking for, lovely campsite, not too big, no shops, bars or amusement arcades and right in the thick of Cornwall.
When we arrived it seemed to be all of that, exactly as described.
The Campsite has probably about 60 pitches for tents and caravans, is nestled behind mature trees and the most beautifully maintained shrubs and bushes I have seen for a while and is just off the road that leads to the A30 from the small town.
We were there during the Scottish holidays so the English schools hadn't finished yet which caused the site to be quieter than we were expecting. There were no other kids for our two to play with. That said it was our plan to get out and about during our time in Cornawall so that didn't cause too much a concern.
Now, cast your mind back to the first week in July, yip, the RAIN. And boyo did it rain. From about our third day it rained pretty much constantly for four days. The pitches drained well and there was no standing water on our field although I can recall seeing puddles elsewhere. The nature of the site is large grassed areas and you drive your car to your pitch over the grass. Normally fine probably, but by the third day of rain the grass simply couldn't cope and was rutting badly under the weight of the cars. One field resembled the Glastonbury festival mud bath!
I felt heart sorry for the owners, they clearly are very proud of their site.
Another small niggle was the access road leading from the toilet blocks to our field. There were a number of pot holes, some quite deep and it made the walk back to the pitch like a game of hopscotch, especially when they were full of water. We all know how 4 year olds feel about puddles, yip, wet feet on a few occasions.
The toilet block and showers were fine. Spotlessly clean if a little dated, free showers, water pressure not the best and hot water seemed to be a bit of hit or a miss. On the whole though perfectly acceptable for our needs.
So, on the whole - gorgeous little site which is clearly lovingly maintained and cared for, fantastic value money and facilities that compare to most others I've visited.
If we were to be venturing to that part of the world again (which is unlikely in the foreseeable future), I would have no hesitation in visiting Penrose again.

The campsite looked well maintained. There were regular bin collections and the grass was regularly cut. The toilet/shower block was clean and adequate.
Campers kitchen was a great idea with fridge and freezer provided for everyones use, including free use of ice blocks if needed. Laundry was good and well equipped with laudry baskets, iron, ironing board.
There was a new looking children's play area which my children visited often, enjoying the swings and slide.
Our pitch was in the meadow which appeared to be a bit of an overflow area. We didn't mind this so much as there was lots of space for the children to play. However, the pretty hedges and trees that were used to house unsightly bins in the main part of the site were not in evidence here. There was no proper drainage for the one water tap on the entire field that just drained into the grass. Unfortunately this was right on our pitch and on top of rain this made the surrounding ground very soggy.
Only one hook up point for 4 pitches, our cable didn't reach but we were able to borrow an extension lead from reception after leaving a returnable deposit.
From the meadow it was a long walk to the toilet/shower block with young chidren, especially in the night! It did feel as though we were apart from the main site.
We thought security was a bit of an issue with unsecured gates accessible from the road directly into the camping field, especially as we were so far from the reception area and busier part of the site.
During our stay, there was a fault with the boiler that meant for the first 4 days of our holiday you were lucky to get hot water. After this the problem was acknowledged and a system was put in place to make hot water available at peak times. The management were apologetic about this. However, during the entire holiday the middle shower in the family block only seemed to provide luke warm water which made showering the children hard work.
There was a local pub within walking distance, can't comment on the food as we didn't eat there, but the children enjoyed the play area and there was a good range of local ales on offer. Small shop close by too for basic shopping. Good location for exploring beaches nearby. We loved St Agnes, small beach with fabulous rockpools.
The advertised take away was never open during our 2 week stay so can't comment on that.
Overall we had a good holiday but probably wouldn't go back to this site as felt too much out on a limb in the meadow and too far away from main facilities.

Just got back from our second visit to Penrose. Its a clean well laid out site with large pitches for tents and tourers alike. The staff are very welcoming and the site has a nice family feel about it. I know its not the nicest subject to write about but. Penrose has the cleanest and most modern toilet waste disposal I've ever seen !
It's got a play park area for the kids and the staff can advise you on some great local walks that take in one or two hidden pubs.
Great take away on site in high season too.
Looking forward to our next visit to Cornwall.

Just returned from a week on this site. It was fantastic. Beautifully kept, excellent facilities, charming and helpful owners.
It is well situated near Perranporth and not too far from Newquay. We have camped for 20 years and recently had a caravan. This is one of the best sites we have been on. It is recommended without hesitation

Thought I'd write my review while we're still here and everything's fresh in my mind.
Pitches - these are all very generous. I called a couple of weeks before as I was concerned that we might need an extra large pitch. I shouldn't have worried any of the pitches would have accommodated our tent plus extension. The grass really is immaculate and well cared for.
Shower blocks - I never queued once for a shower and always had the pick of at least two cubicles. I was horrified to visit another site and witness queues of 40 mins plus. I don't think this site would see a problem like this. The showers and toilets were always clean and there was never a lack of hot water. Yes, the timer on the shower is frustrating but if you time it right and push the button before the water stops flowing you can maintain the flow.
Children - our children 9 and 7 had a great time at the (what looks very new) play area. The site kids all seemed to congregate there to play together. I was never worried about them, the site is small enough not to be able to lose them!
Other facilities - we really appreciated the campers kitchen with the fridge, freezer and microwave. We used all 3 at least once when we ran out of fridge space for the beer!
Surrounding area - I think this part of Cornwall is in a pretty good location. We were about 30 minutes of any the attractions we wanted to visit. We ate in The New Inn on the first evening and although hubbie thought his meal was ok I was disappointed. We didn't think that The White Horse Inn was too hot either but I guess it depends what you're looking for. I can however recommend Rick Stein for his fish and chips at Padstow!
Th biggest star for us was the glorious beaches and we were blessed with a couple of roasting hot days which made them even more beautiful.
In summary if you want a quiet site but with good, clean facilities I don't think you would be disappointed with Penrose Holiday Park - well done from us!

Just come back from a week at Penrose with touring caravan. The site is very nice with very generous pitches, and beautifully maintained.
The toilet and shower block are kept spotless at all times and there is a takeaway open morning and evening but I only used this once.
I would say this is a good site if you are looking for a quiet stay and do not want to feel crammed in.
There is a shop down the road and a pub called the New Inn which does a good carvery 3 times a week at a very reasonable price.
All in all a nice site.

Beautiful campsite. Very well maintained.
Staff very welcoming and friendly.
Lovely children's play area.
Toilets and washing facilities good.
Local pub down the road for good food
The most important aspect for us was the owners allowed us to arrive at 7.45 am on site. We had travelled for 5 hours from Leicester and were very grateful to be able to (quietly) pitch.
Fantastic area, Perranporth town and beach is lovely.
Also near to Newquay, good for surfing.
Would recommend site, we will return again.

This has to be one of the best sites in this area of Cornwall and close to pubs and the beach. The site is exceptionally clean, level and well manicured, quiet/peaceful and family run, if you are looking for a rowdy site you won't find it here. The showers are clean and tidy, the covered wash up area has bins to empty food. There is a family bathroom which I haven't used and a laundry area. I will be going back again for the second time this year and for the third year running this August, and we will be bringing friends with us and I can honestly say I can't wait to go back. Love the separate fenced dog walking area, a lovely touch, Bert our Jack Russell loves it. You are always made to feel welcome here and you will see the bloke on the mower zipping around everywhere, who will stop and have a chat. PS the Easter BBQ is a MUST :) Overall a fantastic site and the owners should be proud x

This is a 'nice' site, but we won't be returning. At first site it appears to be quite full, but we soon realised that it might have lots of caravans and statics (all taking up the best pitches) but these belonged to the site and most were vacant.
Because the site had so few visitors the owners had closed their on-site cafe and takeaway, reception was rarely open and the 'weather' print-out on display in the reception window hadn't been updated since the previous week.
The toilet and shower block wasn't pleasant either - was clean but cold in feel and look. I complained because the shower would only stay on for 6 seconds - needing the button to be pressed again, and again, and again!
But, if you want a friendly smile, chat and wonderful beer and food, do go to the Plume of Feathers just next to the Cider Farm. It won't disappoint.
