Our first visit to this excellent site just located off the a1, lovely clean site friendly & very helpful wardens on site, well maintained toilet facilities etc. There is a park & ride site 2 mins away which takes you straight into durham city, there is some noise from the a1 but that didn't bother us. Look forward to visiting here again

The Caravan Club site is located just off the busy A1(M) 2 miles outside Durham and provides an ideal stop off en-route North or South. However being so close to the A1(M), this together with the (equally busy) A690 feeder road provides constant background motorway noise on the site throughout the day and night!
The site has very good toilet/facilities block, generous sized pitches, children’s play area and dog walk.
A Park and Ride is located 5 minutes’ walk from the site (but having to cross the aforementioned A690 twice and busy motorway slip roads twice!) and for £ 2. 00/person offers return transport into Durham between 7am-7pm, very good value and regular 10 minute service.
Alternatively a riverside/woodland walk is available using the public footpath (take the second turn towards the river when heading towards Durham from site, not first indicated on the OS map) and is 3 ½ meandering river miles to the city centre.

Well first the negatives;
Because of it's location the site is exposed to a lot of road noise. J62 of the A1(M) is a stones throw away and the A690 Durham - Sunderland dual-carriageway is even closer, less than 200 yards in my estimation. The upshot is noise 24/7 and if you have to take a pitch in the 14 - 20 range you have line of site to the A1(M) and accordingly the noise is constant, so the lower number pitches are generally the better option, but not in all case as there are a couple of bays that 'next' four or five pitches that are out of line-of-site with the motorway
Second permanent issue by CC standards (which are high) is that there is only one 'toilet' block and with the pitches being in more or less four rows (a few unless you are in the first two rows nearest reception you have a long walk (again by CC standards) around the tarmac road or risk annoying other campers by walking across/through other pitches. On this trip the latter was not option for us as the third and non permanent issue was the length of the grass which given the heavy dews each morning meant very wet, ankle deep grass.
Given there was no rain and the sun shone all 6 of the days we were on site I can see no reason at all why there was no grass cutting undertaken.
Now the positives;
Extremely friendly wardens
Park and Ride a 12 - 15 minute walk away (we took the car regardless - 2 minutes)
P & R is £2 return, or freee in our case with a bus pass
Durham is a 10 - 12 minute ride away using the P & R
Durham is a gem, great castle, do do the guided tour (£3. 50 for concessions, £5 for others) so much to learn about the castle and the region from the tour guide.
More coffee shops than you can shake a stick at, Tealicious and Flat White to name but two, the latter just exudes character and the cakes/sandwiches and other dishes are so different to the norm and wonderfully tasty.
Cannot give a 10 as someone else did for 'location', it could be this close to Durham and the lovely county Durham countryside without being sat on an exit ramp of a motorway.
Childrens play area looks as good as any in the CC, the dog walk however leaves a lot to be desired and does not link to an external walk as many others with the CC do.

A good campsite and very handy for visiting Durham city which hopefully we will do next time we visit. We were on route to Scotland and we had to visit friends whilst we were there. The toilet and showers were immaculate as was the whole site. It is very conveniently just off a busy roundabout but the traffic noise didn't disturb us at all.
Why is there so much fuss about parking your motorhome we are not stupid people, it seems only the Caravan club have these stipulations.

The site is adjacent to the A1 which is both its good & bad point. The good being that it is easily accessible, the bad being the constant traffic noise.
It is a typical CC site, clean and well maintained with the now common ridiculous pitching instructions for motor homes.
Not all of the wardens were of the friendly cheerful persuasion.
Newspapers could be ordered daily.
Chip van came on Friday night at 7. 30pm, which we tried and found to be very nice.
The park and ride is less than a mile away, which is a flat level walk. Although to remain on the pavement you have to walk the wrong way around the roundabout and cross 4 dual carriageways without traffic light assistance, then another road that has a pedestrian crossing. Not that easy for the less nimble or those with children.
The P&R costs £2 each return.
We give this site location 10 out of 10 because of the ease to visit Durham without using our own vehicle.
There is another bus stop near the pedestrian crossing which is on the Sunderland bus route into & out of Durham.
The walk along the river to Durham was through a wood until you arrive at the riverbank. It is not at all sign posted, & I think it would be difficult to walk to the site from Durham without getting a bit lost.

We have used this site many times. It was a great base for when our daughter was at university in the North East, or when we wanted to visit family in the area, or even if we just wanted to test out the caravan at the start of the season.
The site is next to a Council grit store and the access from the A1 is excellent. It is not a pretty site but it doesn't claim to be, and depending where you are on the site and the wind direction there is varying amounts of road noise from the A1.
However, as with all CC sites, the facilities are spotless and the wardens are extremely helpful.
The fish and chip van visits every Friday night, and the working men's club in Carrville is very welcoming to visitors on the site and is an excellent pint of beer and is only a 5 minute walk away on the other side of the motorway.
The walk into Durham is very pleasant along the river and the bus back is very convenient. There is a good Chinese in Carrville and a large supermarket as well.
A good stopping place for travel north/south and a great base for a few days if you want to visit Durham, Beamish or anywhere in the Northeast.

I am a great fan of CC sites, quite a few have imaginative layout and together with friendly wardens this makes usually for a very pleasant stay.
Pity about Durham Grange. Definitely a site without soul. A site where everyone walked across other pitches because the were presumably too lazy to take a longer walk on the road system. We booked a service pitch to find people dumping their grey water down our drain and filling water from our tap!
Add to this constant road noise from A1 and a strange warden with an even stranger attitude, then you have all the mix for a most unpleasant stay. Surprise, surprise I won't be back!

Just had a lovely six days at Durham Grange although the weather was something else! I have never known a site so close to a main road and whilst we could hear traffic it didn’t bother us at all. On approach to the site be careful as there are several pot holes just before you get on to the Caravan Club Site. Saw one or two vans bounce about a bit on arrival.
Check in was quick and we had been allocate a super pitch with water and waste. There are only a few of these and we requested one when we booked.
The pitches are huge, never seen them as big. Place for a car, caravan and a big awning if needed. The caretakers keep the site spotless.
The shower/toilet areas are impeccable and cannot be faulted. They are warm, clean and well ventilated. The laundry room and dishwashing areas are clean too.
There is an information kiosk with leaflets about the area. You can order newspapers from reception and they have a small selection of eggs/milk/ caravan necessities.
Durham is compact and the cathedral/castle access has to be worked out as you can drive around for hours with nowhere to park.
We have a little dog and it’s always difficult to find somewhere to be able to take him. Not so in Durham, head for the Court Inn (DH1 3AW) next to the courts/prison. The welcome is wonderful and the food and drink are plentiful. No problem for the little dog either.
For days out we went to the Angel of the North, Seahouses, Seaham, Tynemouth, Barnard Castle and all these places can be accessed easily by the good roads.
The winds tend to get up, but the locals reckon this is ‘normal’. Noticed it North of Darlington so dropped my speed.
Would we go again? Yes we would, hopefully the weather will be better though!

We had a two night stay on this site while visiting Durham for a friends wedding and apart from the noise from the A1 which is close by I could not fault the site.
The C. C wardens were very helpful and assisted us in pitching the van and even advised me which way to point are digital TV aerial to get a decent picture.
The reception also sells basics like milk, eggs etc and for the big shop there's a huge Tesco Extra only 5 minutes drive from site.
The site facilities and service points were always spotlessly clean and well maintained which is credit to the hard working wardens so no complaints there.
Durham city centre is only 10-15 minutes drive from the site entrance and parking can be had in the multi-story car park which is close to the shops and Durham Cathedral which is definitely worth a visit.
We would certainly use this site again if in the area

This has to be the easiest club site to find, it is literally just yards from the A1. Unfortunate this also means there is always quite a lot of traffic noise 24 hours a day. But don't let that put you off this site.
It's a great base for exploring the surrounding area. Durham is just 3 miles away, and is a must visit. The local park and ride is within walking distance, care needs to be taken as you have to 'go the long way round' to get safely to it. Even then, you have to cross a number of busy roads.
Friendly bunch of staff who dealt with our booking in efficiently. The site shop sells very basic groceries and newspapers can be pre ordered. The shower block was immaculate and for once there actually seemed to be more shower cubicles than they actually need! Phone reception was good, I would class the TV reception as OK, rather than the clubs rating of good.
The Beamish open air museum is worth a visit and only about 20 mins drive away and just a bit further up the road is the Angel of the North. Hartlepool and it's historic quay is a great day out, where you can learn all about the Royal Navy and explore the oldest warship still afloat.
Went to The Metro Centre at Gateshead and must admit I was a bit disappointed. It's easy enough to find, but it wasn't very well sign posted to find a parking space and once inside the map of the layout wasn't very user friendly and was also out of date as a few shops had closed or changed. Meadowhall does it better.
A fish and chip van visits on Friday nights, very nice and worth the wait in the cold!
All in all, a nice little site, just a shame it's so close to the A1.
