Just returned from a wonderful 6 night break at the Grange where we met up with our friends in their motorhome who like us travel with their dog.
On arrival the wardens were really helpful helping us select a pitch which would enable us to be close to our friends who had a serviced pitch and we did not. The pitches are mostly hardstanding but we were on one of the few grass ones which was sloping a little.
We appreciated the security that the remote control key fob gave. We hired a car for our stay here and were glad we did as there is so much to do in the surrounding areas which would not have been accessible with our fairly large motorhome.
The beaches, coastline and countryside are all stunning in this part of the country. Durham itself is a pretty city but surprisingly small. We used the park and ride service to go into Durham which was dog friendly and only £1. 70 per person. There is also a massive Tesco Extra 2 miles away in Belmont.
The site itself had a disappointing dog walk without a cordoned off area to let them off the lead to have a run around. There was a public footpath outside the main entrance to the site but we did not try this as it seemed a bit too close to the main road. As it happened our dog got plenty of exercise on the surrounding very dog friendly beaches.
We visited both Seaham and Seaton Sluice beaches, both of which were immaculate.
All the facilities were clean and tidy and there was never a queue for the showers although there is only one washing machine and dryer which always seemed to be in great demand.
TV and phone signal were both good on the site and everything was kept spick and span as you would expect on a Caravan Club site.
This is a wonderfully located site to explore everything the North East has to offer. Just off the A1, road connections are good and I would thoroughly recommend you give this site a try if you find yourself in the area.

Used this as a stopover for 1 night as conveniently placed just off A1M. Friendly helpful warden when booking over the phone and helpful on arrival.
All facilities are usual CC standard with laundry £3. 00 per wash and tumble dryer.
Level pitches, we pitched in a small circular area away from main area so dogs would be settled.
Dog walk runs along back of site but if you go out of the site back towards the dual carriageway and pick up the public footpath on your right it takes you alongside fields and down to the river/wooded areas.
Would use again.

Visited this site in September for one night only, although the site itself is clean and tidy it has absolutely no character.
Was not impressed with the ladies shower block there was quite a bad smell which I think was coming from the drains. Road noise from the A1 is very noticeable day and night.
No shop on site but there is a hut with lots of good information for tourists.
Wardens nice and On the plus side it is very close to Durham, which is a lovely city. We would use this site again but only as a stopover.

To Find Site:- From north or south on A1M take Durham exit. Coming onto the roundabout from the A1 slip road turn onto A690 towards Durham and immediately move into right hand lane and turn right at International camping sign. The site is straight ahead.
This site is a stone’s throw from the A1M so there is always a hum of traffic although you do get used to it. Grange is open all year and accepts non-members and tent campers. There are 76 pitches, 59 of which are hardstandings including some serviced pitches for which there is a small extra charge. The site has one toilet block which is of a very good standard. Dotted around the site are service points. WiFi is available across the site at usual Caravan Club costs. Newspapers can be ordered from reception. For younger children there is a nice play area.
This site is ideally suited for an overnight stop off the A1M. It is also very convenient for visiting the city of Durham and the Beamish Open Air Museum which is about 12 miles away. For shopping there is a Tesco in the direction of Dragonsville about a mile and a half from the site. To visit Durham there is a Park and Ride just across the A1M from the site. You can walk but you do have to cross some very busy roads so it might be advisable to take the car. If you have an English Bus Pass this can be used on the buses from the P&R.

An absolute gem of a site, was worried about proximity to A1, but we could barely hear the road. Toilets and showers were exceptional and very very clean.
The welcome from the wardens was one of the best I've ever known. They had a map of the area and showed us a lovely walk, which was truly stunning and very very quiet.
There is a small dog walk on site, but nothing to write home about, just ideal for a stroll. The park and ride to Durham is just up the road and it is ideally placed should you wish to venture in to Durham.
We were on a stop over to Northumberland and so didn't bother, but would definitely visit again for longer. The pitches were immaculate and it felt really green and leafy.
Would recommend.

Five night stay at end of June, weather ranged from bright & sunny to hailstones!
Pitch on grass, nice level site in good condition.
Pitch area sufficient for van, car & awning plus windbreak area.
Toilet block and facilities first class, lovely clean condition,
Site office sparse, no shop as such, though garage and local stores all within a few miles.
Wardens (relief) pleasant & helpful.
Lovely walks alongside River Wear, suitable for dog-walkers as well.
Would happily recommend this site and looking forward to return visit,

We have again had a fantastic time at Grange. We visited last time in August for 16 nights, but this time could only manage to sneak in 7 nights.
The weather was fantastic but it never fails to amaze me how many use this site as a stop gap site, there is so much to do in the area. We also used the Park and Ride and braved walking, no problems as long as you are sensible, there are part time traffic lights which helps a lot.
The facilities were as immaculately kept as every other Caravan Club site we have been to, there was never any queues for the showers or loos despite it being very busy.
The wardens were polite and friendly, we managed to site on pitch 21 which is 3 away from the park and whilst it is noisy from the A1 which runs along the back, is no issue for us as we have another busy A road at home.
Our children (10 & 11) loved the fact that they were allowed in the woods behind the park and joined with 3 other boys and built a fantastic den which gave them shelter from the 24 degree heat! The dog run was just behind us but thankfully all owners who used it were sensible and cleaned up after their dogs.
We used the Tesco Extra which is 4 miles away in Belmont and has a fuel station and again travelled one night to Taybarns NE16 3BL for their banquet meal (all you can eat for £8) but even that is only 16 miles away maximum.
The ferry from South Shields to North Shields was a bit hit with us, especially the free bus which runs from the dock at North Shields to the town centre which is uphill.
We also popped to MetroCentre on Bank Holiday Monday but easily parked. If you have a Motorhome or don't want to try parking in Newcastle itself (it is very expensive)you can use the Park n Ride to Durham (£1.70) and then get the bus from the stop outside Wilkinsons to Newcastle itself (£4.75 rtn or 60p each way for under 16's)they run every half hour from there.
We had a very relaxing week and I would recommend it to anyone, if you don't like noise from the road though, try locate at the left side of the site.
Didn't try the fish and chip van that came on Friday night but all site reviews raved about them. We may do next time we visit!

Lovely site. Calm, civilised, well-located & very clean. Park & Ride service to Durham highly recommended - still only £1.70 for a day pass & kids under 16 go free. Buy ticket from machine at terminus (gives change). 5-10 mins walk from site, but involves crossing fast roads as previously mentioned. Buses every 10mins 0700-1900.
Fish & chip van visits campsite Fri nights 1930-2100. Earplugs recommended for traffic noise, but greatly reduced after 2200.
Wardens reasonably friendly, but seem to think children should be kept on a lead. Playground very good, but tucked away in a corner & bordered by woods - not ideal.
Predominance of couples in their 40s, 50's & 60s when we stayed - very few children. Lots of regular customers.
Big, wide pitches but not very long - hitching up requires parking at a sharp angle so as to avoid causing a traffic jam on site roads.
No cycle route into Durham as such, but pleasant riverside walk (map 10p from reception). Overall grade 8/10 & we will return.

A superb site. Well organised. Secure with security barrier operated by remote key fob provided to you on check in.
You can select own pitch from those available on arrival and all pitches seemed equally superb. All were a very good size too, so no need to encroach neighbours space.
Well equipped with facilities. Good play area.
It was a chilly night, snow etc, but wash rooms were beautifully clean and toasty warm.
Good veg prep and wash up room beside a laundry room.
5 mins drive (max!) to park and ride to go into Durham and park and ride driver was amazingly helpful. Also it was just off the roundabout from the A1 so a very handy location.
All in all, an A1 site in all respects! Can't think of anything that was not perfect.

A very easy location to reach being just off the A1 and whilst some reviewers have mentioned the traffic noise, I was constantly amazed, during my 21 night stay, that such a busy road could be heard so little from the site, it didn't disturb me at all. It is a prettily laid out, flat site with immaculate facilities which were warm even on the coldest of days. Sunderland Empire Theatre is only 10.5 miles away, just 20 minutes drive, and the site is a great base from which to explore the North East. Durham is just a few miles away and a park and ride station just across the roundabout from the site makes a very easy visit without the hassle of parking in the city itself. Shops a drive away, but a short trip only. Would definitely make a return visit.
