We had just bought a tent and were desperate to try it out, but with it being a bank holiday weekend we struggled to find a vacancy. We were very lucky that Riverside had an electric pitch available so went straight down there as we don't live too far away.
It was very easy to find and we were greeted by George who was very helpful and actually had a couple of pitches for us to choose from. The pitches are medium in size and are grass with EHU (16amps). There is hard standing next to each pitch for the car.
We have a 5 man tent (lakesbury 5) which fit on perfectly but we could not fit the porch on as well.
It is a small site with approx 30 pitches and is in a beautiful setting, right by the river Ouse with lovely walks along the river and into Bishopthorpe which is a lovely village with plenty of nice pubs serving good food and all have play areas for kids.
The village has small local shops for essentials and a post office. Bishopthorpe is close to York and the A64 which can be heard in the background on a night, but wasn't too intrusive.
The site is lovely and clean and they have recently built a fantastic new toilet and shower block. I'm very fussy about shared facilities but these were spotless, the ladies had 3 toilets and 4 showers with constant hot water and there was never a cue for them and there was plenty of toilet rolls and hand wash. There are two washing up sinks in a room with a washing machine and tumble dryer.
There is a sluice for emptying your toilet and a place to get fresh drinking water.
There is a small children's play area but as its very close to the river we had to stay with our child. There is a playing field up the lane from the site on which you can play football etc.
It was a brilliant place to stay for our first camping trip and we shall hold it as a bench mark for choosing our next campsite although we would definitely return here again. The only negative is the size of the pitches, but there maybe bigger ones if you ask. Well worth £21 a night.

I have stayed on this site several times over the last few years, & enjoyed it, although with 25 pitches it was always crowded.
Things have changed! It now has 35 pitches, these are so close together that the tent on the next pitch was only 4 foot from my caravan,
The roads & very small hard standings are made of what looks like builders rubble, with bits of old cable, wire, etc. sticking out of it. In fact the whole site looks like a building site with piles of rubble surrounded by wire fencing.
A new toilet / shower /Laundry block has been built and is very good. The chemical toilet emptying point has a fixed pipe (no hose pipe) with a timed tap, and it is difficult to flush out toilet cassettes, the toilet emptying point is also used to dispose of grey water, it is built a foot of the ground & is difficult to lift a full wastemaster up, especially when getting older.
The cost of £21 night + £2.50 for an awning (because of the small size of pitch there is not room to park a car & erect an awning) + electricity which is by prepaid card (they even charged me £1 for the £1.60 credit left by the previous camper) is a lot especially as the site is obviously not finished.
We booked for a 4 night stay but after 3 nights we felt so intimidated by the closeness of other tents we left.
We will never return to this site again

The situation of the Riverside Camping and Caravan site is picturesque as it's name might suggest.
It offers access to Boat hire, good fishing and riverside walks. Situated a short distance from Bishopthorpe and it's amenities in the form of 3 pubs that serve food, a convenience store, post office and newsagent as well as other shops. Of course is accessible by road, regular bus service and a three mile walk along the riverside.
A stroll onto the riverbank and one can view the Bishopthorpe palace.
The wardens are friendly and helpful. However the facilities left a lot to be desired. The paper towel and soap dispensers remained empty for most of our stay even though they were requested. Noisy on weekend evenings.
Unfortunately we cut our stay short by 3 days, but this site has so much potential.

Lovely little place on the river Ouse. Owners very friendly, welcoming and helpful. Shower block is adequate and clean, I'm fussy but was happy with the showers, toilets and washing area.
The office sells only a couple of refreshments but there's a Co-op and Post Office within walking distance. There are several pubs/restaurants within walking distance too. Although I don't have little ones myself, there is a kiddies playground.
Boats can be hired on site at very reasonable rates, for a good length of time. There's a bus route around the corner to get into York. I'd definitely go again.

I agree with many of the posts for this site. Yorkshirecamper makes a very good point : this site has superb potential. It's located right next to the River Ouse, in a pretty enough little village.
But all sorts of units are just crammed in without any sort of thought, there is no organised layout of pitches. One camper couple put up their tent safely enough in the corner, and decided they'd chain their car / trailer to the tree, just 3 feet from our van. Any closer and I'd have had trouble opening the doors to switch on our gas!
There seem to be a lot of regulars, and it got a bit noisy when they gathered for a drink next to the river later in the evening (it was Friday night though).
Toilets weren't great and based on them I didn't even check out the showers.
The elderly couple who were managing the site were very pleasant in that down-to-earth Yorkshire way and the old dear was still working away at 9pm.
Luckily it was a cheap site, but looking back at it now, it offered a superb evening's people-watching :-)
The village is a short walk, and has a couple of pubs/restaurants to spend some time in.
The village is a short drive from York (not really walking distance though there's a riverside walk).

Booked this camp site due to its close location to york. We couldn't believe how crammed in we were to each other, they seemed to squeeze as many tents/caravans in as possible, we were that close to others we could hear every conversation said.
We were told when booking this site 3 months ago that the new toilet/shower block would be ready, our friends visited the site 3 weeks previously and they were told that they would be ready in time. But when we arrived there was no sign of a new block and we had to suffer the portable loos, which were mouldy, smelly and very very dirty.
We all refused to have showers. The washing up facilities were just as bad, definitely not cleaned while we were there for the 2 days. The location was ideal, right on the river ouse.
This campsite would be lovely with the right facilities and not being crammed in like sardines. Will not visit this site again even with a new toilet block due to closeness of each tent/caravan.

Re-visited May bank holiday weekend, packed in like sardines, no spaces between tents, caravans or motorhomes. No improvements since our last visit last year apart from about 4 or 5 fire buckets and extinguishers which we feel is no where near enough for the number of units crammed in on this site.
We complained to the couple who site you when you arrive and they said it was 'nowt to do with them, they don't take the bookings. We didn't feel this was a good enough reason for them not to deal with our complaint or point us in the right direction of who could deal with it.
We were not the only ones who weren't happy, even spoke to seasonals who said this site used to be a great site but has gone down hill in the last 2 years. Appreciate this is a business but surely keeping your campers happy will ensure they return time and time again.

I booked a pitch before hand and made sure there was a place for us with electric hookup. I checked out their website and looked on google maps and the site sounded and looked absolutely lovely. I checked with the owner and was advised that there was plenty of space and could have a choice of where to pitch and to just turn up. Great!
Upon arrival I could not have been more disappointed. We pulled into the site and and it was packed solid with vans, tents, cars, boats etc. There was hardly any space left and didn't look as though there was a safe space between outfits.
The wardens came over to us and sorted us out with somewhere to pitch and told us that they don't have specific pitches? Not what I was informed! As there was little room, people were walking straight past our door so not much privacy either. When asked if we needed hook up, there was a bit of a sigh from the wardens but I did request this when I phoned to book our pitch. They did help and sorted this out for us.
This could be a lovely site if it wasn't packed in like it was. There must have been 40-50 outfits on site when it is advertised at holding only 25.
We cut our weekend short and only stayed the one night. Not impressed!

Just back from a bank holiday weekend there and certainly wont be back. Reading the previous reviews, things appear to be much the same. Caravans and tents were crammed.
The toilets which were supposed to have re-built, havent and are disgusting old fashioned portaloos which should not be a part of caravanning in this decade. The wardens were lovely and really chatty.
The park was a couple of small slides and elsan point a hole in the ground. The electrics on my uncle's hook-up point tripped throughout the weekend, while the bins were situated right next to some of the caravans.
There is 3 lovely pubs in the village and co-op and hourly bus to York.

Stayed here one weekend in September, no proper elsan point just a hole in the ground into a septic tank right next to children's play area. Toilet facilities dreadful but was assured these were being knocked down and re-built for the start of the season 2010 so should be better next season!
Site was noisy, tents and caravans close together. Lady on site was very friendly and helpful. Thought the boatyard adjacent to site was very scruffy resembled a scrapyard. The fees are high for the quality of the toilet blocks.
Apart from all this, it has the potential to be a really lovely site as it is right by the River Ouse which was lovely to sit by on an evening and watch the boats go up and down. Might return next spring to see what the site is like after all the improvements have been carried out.
