My family and I stayed on this campsite for two nights with our friends. The site wardens seemed a bit unhappy that we were in 4 large tents even though we had given the size of the tents when we booked. However, after this initial confusion the managers were very friendly and helpful.
This could be an excellent site. The location is idyllic - picnic tables are set up next to the River Ouse, so you can watch the impressive boats. The children loved feeding the ducks and fishing from the banks. It's also a great spot to explore the local area; York being 5mins drive away, or 15mins by boat if you hire one.
Unfortunately, the one thing letting this site down was the cleanliness. Firstly, the portaloos were smelly. There was a ladies with a shower, which was basic, but for some inexplicable reason this was locked late at night, while the mens was open - not great if you have small children.
There were only two waste skips for the whole site. When we got there they were overflowing with rubbish, so all rubbish got dumped by the side of them. This was right next to the children's play area and some unfortunate family had their tent next to it as well. We found out that the bins were only emptied once a week. Apart from this, the chemical waste dump was also situated next to the children's play area. And I use 'play area' losely as it comprised of two flimsy swings and a toddler slide. The restaurant that was on site looked run down and was closed.

Stayed at this site for 4 days. Brilliant little site really nice spot right by the river boats going up and down the river all day and you can even hire a boat for £45 for the whole day cheapest rate we found by far . Fishing is free as it is private property which was ideal for us as we are a fishing family! this is a very friendly site the toilet block was clean but scruffy however there are plans to replace it all this year.
The only downside was an a fellow camper who was arguing over the price of his pitch. We will defo go back.

We have just come back from spending a few days at this site. It really is lovely, my 2 boys, 6 and 4 loved it and so did my mum who was fishing all day! My only issue that I would have is the toilet block, it is very basic! We were told that there are plans to build new ones, I think this would be a good finish for a really nice camp site. We hired the boat and went for a little trip for an hour, very reasonably priced. Everyone is really friendly and we have already booked another trip for September.

Just stayed here for 3 nights. The toilet facilities were basic. The site really is pack 'em in and the playground was a creaky swing and a baby slide. On the plus side the location is great for york and the local village is lovely with great pubs and village type shops. There is a walking path into nearby Acaster Malbis which is also nice.

Just back from this great little site, having booked at the last minute the day before. I was told they were pretty full but would squeeze us on, so I was a little worried about having enough space for our large tent but this was not a problem at all. We were given a quiet corner just a few steps away from the showers / loos just behind the office cabin.
The owners are fab - they can't do enough to help you. They are constantly checking you are ok, and are on hand until about 6pm if you need anything. In fact, this being a last minute thing we packed in a hurry and forgot the most essential piece of kit - the frying pan for breakfast! George was more than happy to lend us one so we survived!
They warned us there was a big party there last night and they would probably be noisy, and they apologised again on their behalf this morning! The noise did not bother us at all though.
The site is right on the River Ouse where you can hire boats for the day / half day, lots of ducks around who will invite themselves into your tent, and just a short walk to the village where there is a butcher, co-op, and several pubs. York is a short drive away or you can get the bus - we did neither! We just wanted to chill out really by the tent and that's what we did. If you are arriving on a Saturday and want meat from the butchers for barbecue, be warned it closed at 1.30 - just 10 minutes before we left the pub opposite after having our lunch! Gutted! But there is a co-op - or Tesco is a 10 min drive away.
Toilets are fine though not many of them, but it is a small site. I did not use the showers but they looked fine also.
All in all a fantastic gem of a site I think, and we will definitely go again in fact already booked for a 2 night stay next weekend.
I would say booking is essential here - I booked for next Friday and Saturday and already they were almost full.

We spent four nights at this site during half term and it really is the most tranquil little site i've ever been to. The site steward george and his wife, lucy were lovely people, they work really hard keeping the place clean and tidy and make you feel so welcome. You can get a cup of tea on the river banks and biscuits for 50p. The boats go by and everyone is friendly. We hired a self drive boat for the afternoon and followed the river all the way to york for ice cream that made my day. We will go back hopefully soon.

What can I say about this great little site that has so much going for it? We landed mid afternoon, after making a last minute phone call, looking for somewhere to stay the night on our last stop before going home. The voice on the phone promised to squeeze us in and that's just what he did along with 4 more visitors! The approach to the site (Ferry Lane) is a narrow unlikely 'track' but, after negotiating overhanging trees and some parked cars it opened up into something quite unexpected. It's great! Mug of tea, or coffee, and biscuits, by the riverside, for 50p! Yes 50p! We will definitely go there again.

This site is in an excellent location right beside the River Ouse. The site wardens were extremely helpful and as a bonus self drive boat hire is available to explore the river.
The Toilet and Shower facilities though basic were very clean and well maintained and there are plans to upgrade these later this year which will make an already excellent site absolutely ideal. All pitches benefited from 10A hook ups Riverside is dog friendly and there are plenty of interesting sniffs there being ducks on site and horses nearby. There is an easy walk into Bishopthorpe village which has 3 pubs which all serve food we used the Marcia which was very dog friendly as well as offering tasty well presented food. The village has a post office and a Co-op, Fish and Chip shop and a butcher.
York is a pleasant relatively short walk along the river bank. There is a regular bus service into York also.
The only criticism was from my wife who could not reach the hook up as it was on a pole at a height of about 6ft probably as a precaution against flooding.

The site is easy to find with easy access to York centre, 5-10 minutes by car. Bishopthorpe is a short walk away where there are a number of pubs serving food. It is also very close the racecourse.
It is really quiet at night with only the odd duck making a noise.
We only stayed one night so didn't use the shower facilities although they did seem quiet basic.
The site itself is very small and cramped. Being in a tent we were slightly outnumbered by campervans, but they did protect us against the wind. Although it rained all day the site was wet but was not flooded. The owner managed access to the site very well, by asking people to leave their cars on the carpark to save cutting up the grass.
Would use this site again for a weekend break in York. Not sure if the site would be suitable for longer tent-based stays.

We stayed here the 1st weekend in June and overall enjoyed the stay.
As other reviewers have mentioned it is a bit 'pack em in' and people were close to us.
We had been out to the pub 'The Ebor' 1st one you get to which was excellent and when returning a bit of encroaching had been done.
The toilet and washing facilities do let the site down. I wasn't very impressed but we were only staying the 1 night anyway.
Location wise it was great down by the river. Boats floating past and some launches on the Sunday morning from the marine centre attached.
The warden Paul was very friendly and helped us out with advice on the pub.
There is a co-op within walking distance, just across from the 1st pub.
We are returning back here in July to hire a boat and stay over again. You also get boat hire discount if you are on the campsite.
Also noticed there was a Cantonese restaurant on site, it didn't look to be open though and I didn't have a close look.
It sounded like quite a few people go each weekend from the 'see you next weeks' we heard on Sunday.
