We visited Moorside caravan park this July 2015

Entering the site is a bit tight, Warden on hand to help you park your caravan in the correct place.

Toilets spotless, showers spotless, limited facilities,

A beautiful fishing lake with special plants all along side the lakeside.

Dogs are allowed on site but not next to the lake. As they may tred on the plants. The warden told us that he does not want any dogs releiving themselves near the pond or near his plants. As this could bring other unwanted dogs to the site. Which he has a fair point.

Fishing was good. However please make sure you only take a little seat as the space is only narrow on your peg. No fishing tackle near any of the plants including you rod. As you may knock his precious plants.

For anglers who can fish with no disabilities was great, however the disabled angler will be questioned on their ability to fish.

Shopping for the ladies is good with monkscross near by.

My overhall impression of the site was too clicky

When arriving at this site keep your eyes peeled as the site only has a small sign at the entrance and this was part covered by over hanging trees.

The site is flat and very well kept, the warden and owners were very friendly and helpful as you would hope.

The facilities are dated but very clean and well kept, their is a rail line that runs by the site, however this was not a problem as the trains pass the site in a matter of seconds, the longest train being three carriages long.

Their is a foot path that leads out of the site but crosses the track (so beware) that leads into Strensall.

The fishing lake is the focal point and very well looked after, if you like something unusual wait until you catch a bream here, they think their dolphins or sailfish, as they leap out of the water.

We will be going back in the near future.

Lovely quiet site. The owners are really friendly and helpful, showers a bit dated but clean and tidy. The whole site is tidy and very friendly. Be aware of the trains can be noisy but the stop running at 11pm so a good nights sleep is always had. Good for fishing if you like. Try to stay away from trees is you want a good tv reception. A good site for getting about, monks cross has a park and ride for york.

Nice site, well kept, owners very helpful and friendly, just make sure you don't pitch next to the railway line, its very noisy if you are like us and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Facilities are clean and well done for thinking of a chair in the ladies showers. Nice to sit down and dry the feet. Showers are very big compared to some we have visited and a shelf for shampoo etc. We enjoyed a couple of days just chilling in lovely weather.

Got the bus in to York on one day which was nice. Well done to you both.

Stayed for 2 days, lovely quiet site, adults only which is great. Really clean and tidy, ken and kim the managers are very helpful and will sort you out. If possible they will let you choose a pitch that suits you. Showers and toilets always kept clean and tidy. Fish and chip van comes on sat but not until 8pm which was a little bit late for us. The butcher comes on friday which is good if you don't want to go off site. Strensall village is only a short walk away and has plenty of small shops for all your provisions.

Booked again for sept for 3 nights. Looking forward to that.

This is one of our favourite sites. Wardens are helpful and friendly, the toilets/showers are always clean and re-plenished with supplies.

This is an adult only site and is very friendly and tranquil. The lake is tree-lined with beautiful willows there is benches for people to sit and watch the fishermen around the lake.

You can leave the car on site and take a 20 min walk into strensil village where you can catch a bus into York.

You can hear the trains when they pass the site, but there is no traffic noise from the roads.

A mobile butchers and fish & chip van come on site certain nights

We have just returned from a week at this site, upon arrival we were greeted with, “Well let’s see where we can get you in”. We “booked” this site months ago, so why the mystery?

It all soon became apparent. The trouble is that this site is rammed and crammed with every inch being allocated, to caravans and motorhomes, at best there is about a 2 foot gap between you and the next pitch assuming you put up an awning. The booking system “is not”! The fact that your name is down on a piece of paper, does not, it seems guarantee you a pitch. The recent heavy rain only served to make matters worse.

The site really operates a first come first served system, unless you are in the know, as clearly some were because the better lakeside pitches were filled immediately one was vacated – but you can't book Hardstandings can you?

There was frequently the waft of “treatment” from the nearby sewage works. We were staying at the time when the hottest day of the year so far was recorded, thus most of us had every opening window, door and vent fully open, both day and night.

We were pitched adjacent to a line of conifers which at first seemed fine, until on our first morning we were woken at around 5:30am by voices, shouting and the noise from a tent with a thousand zippers, on the other side of the conifers was the “tent area” – We did not know there was one until then! Unfortunately for us it looked like we were sharing our week with the International Insomniac’s Tentathon 2012, as this was repeated every day. The Golden rule of respect for others and being quiet between 11:00pm and 7:00am did not apply here.

The above was directly a problem because of the close proximity of tents/caravans etc.

If you did manage to get back to sleep this would be in vain as the trains start at around 6:55 and run regularly throughout the day until around 11:00pm. The line runs alongside the camp site.

At the time of writing this review, the Web Site Fishing page for Moorside states that fishing is a reasonable *£2. 00 per day and on the Facilities page that **luxury showers are available.

Firstly information for anglers and caravanners alike:

Like the site the lake is crammed with pegs – within feet of each other. It probably has twice the amount required for comfortable fishing. As a result the lake is under significant pressure daily.

Caravanners with lakeside pitches, strategically reserve the adjacent pegs by leaving their tackle in place, day and night.

Fishing is not only *£3. 00 per day but £3. 00 per rod. (£3. 00 per day is mentioned in the '2008' Tariff link but not per Rod)

Boilies are not allowed.

Surface baits are not permitted – no floater fishing.

No Groundbait.

Dogs are not allowed around the lake. – Unless you are one of the fortunate to have a lakeside pitch, then this rule becomes void. As a consequence my wife and I spent the week apart as I was fishing and she looked after the dogs away from the lake.

The washing/toilet/shower facilities are housed in one room and are constructed of pre-fabricated panels – school changing room style!

I can only assume that the **“luxury” element of the showers is that they create an indoor water feature into the adjacent toilet cubicles ie when someone is showering, the water runs along the floor and through the toilet cubicles, so you can even get wet trousers without taking a shower, my wife even got her legs showered whilst in the Loo!

When the grass is cut, it is not collected thus expect copious amounts of grass (particularly when wet) in your caravan and the Washrooms.

The Grey water and chemical waste disposal both use the same drain which has an 8 inch wall of brick as a border/surround, lifting a 40 litre tank full of waste water is not for the feint hearted – why elevate this facility?

The “Dog Exercise Area” is in fact a gate at the corner of the site, leading to a littered “lovers lane” which is part of Strensall common. At one end is a DIY railway crossing and at the other end is the main road. There are NO dog waste bins anywhere – so wear your wellies.

Some of you may think that this review is a little harsh, but I am only reporting facts as they existed during our stay. I always leave the rose coloured spectacles at home!

Based upon the current Website pricing structure we were overcharged by £2. 00 per night.

If the Web site administration pages were brought up to date and the space between the pitches on the campsite and the pegs on the lake were to be spaced sensibly and thus numbers reduced, then this could become a good site and a great one with improvements and additions to the washrooms and waste disposal area.

This was the first time my wife and I had visited this site. It is in a lovely setting with fishing lake and just across the road from Strensall Common which is great for walking. The site is very well presented and clean as are the toilet facilities.

We found the staff extremely pleasant and helpful, nothing was too much bother.

The only noise you will hear is the odd passing train and sporadic machine gun fire from the nearby Army training grounds.

Monks Cross and Clifton Moor shopping centres are within 10 minutes drive and from there you can also take the park and ride into the city of York

First the good points about Moorside.

1. It is set in a peaceful location with only the odd train whistling by.

2. Fishing is good, but beware if you don't have Disgorger / Unhooking Mat / Landing net and abide with the rules.

3. Toilets / Showers are kept clean but sadly are now getting a bit dated, although more than adequate they could do with a facelift.

4. Kim on Reception is great.

Now the Bad Points.

1. Warden and his other colleague ensured we did not put a foot wrong on this site, even if it was something accidental we did whilst there, we were told bluntly what we were doing wrong, then we spent every other day of our break feeling like we were being watched at everything we did.

2. The Pitches are tiny with the 6 metre gap between Caravans, add your awning then park your car and you have no space left to 'swing a mouse' never mind the cat.

3. Ampage at the lakeside is only 6 amps and was forever tripping, this was even happening when everything was switched off in the caravan apart from a 750watt kettle. Oh we couldn't just go find the fuse and re-set, because our fuse was at the opposite side of the site although we were plugged in by our caravan.

4. Pitches got very boggy as it had rained constantly for a couple of days

5. Over the years I have noticed that people that leave caravans in storage seem to get preference of the better pitches.

6. Nearest pub is approx 20-25 min walk, village of Strensall 30 mins, very dark at night if walking, nearest bus route is from the village.

7. Pray the wind is blowing in the opposite direction from the Sewage Plant. Situated only 600 metres from the Campsite.

These are only my opinions, other reviews may see it differently.

We chose one of the wettest weekends of the year to visit this site which meant that a lot of the grass pitches were extremely sodden and waterlogged. There are hardstandings but these seemed to be kept for seasonal caravans and those who stored their caravans on the site. The wardens are very keen to keep their grass pitches in good condition and they found us one of the few dry areas on which to park our motorhome and although we had further rain over the weekend we did not have any problems moving off the pitch at the end our stay.

The site is well sheltered and nicely landscaped with a very attractive fishing lake that is very well stocked with a good variety of fish. The toilet block is kept very clean and the showers are of a good size with plenty of hot water. There is a laundry room with washing machine, tumble dryer, iron and ironing board as well as a microwave oven. The chemical toilet waste and grey water emptying facilities are under cover and are at the rear of the toilet block. With this in mind motorhome owners do need to carry a waste hog as there is no MV waste point. Also the fresh water tap is not very accessible either and requires a long hose to fill your onboard tank.

The site is next door to the common and had the weather been better we would have done some extensive exploring of this area.

There is a shop, pub and petrol station in the village which is probably a 30 minute walk away.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here it is a very relaxing site and the wardens are very friendly and helpful. We look forward to returning here in due course.
