Not the greatest site facility wise, toilets are ok, showers not so good but that aside, we thoroughly enjoyed our two night stay here. Its peaceful, you can have a fire if you camp in the woods and the canoeing trips are a must. We hired out a canoe for the day and had a marvellous day on the River Wye. You canoe down to the boat inn (no food between 3-6) and then Barbara comes and picks you up with the trailer, a great day out.

This is a site of 220 acres surrounding a public house. The charges were reasonable, the people friendly, but one drink was enough in the pub. The place was ramshackle to say the least.
We drove around to find a good spot, but you need a four wheel drive, which luckily we had, as its very muddy and roads are not good condition. There was not a good spot to camp. Lots of the caravans there looked to be 'in residence' - they were unwashed, over 30 years old looking, no cars in sight. Apart from the top field, the rest was uninviting. The top field held about 10 tents and a couple of vans. The water was not fresh drinking water - it was foul to the taste and personally, I would not wash my dog in the shower block. (no separate cubicles in one block, mud all over the floor). Toilets had broken doors and were not cleaned the whole time we were there. Such a shame that the place has obviously been trashed by previous visitors and not looked after by the owners, as I'm sure what they say about a beautiful setting is true, if you could just bear to actually use their facilities. I left wondering what I actually paid for, as myself and my family did not use their toilets or showers for the filth.
Can't comment on the pub food, did not like to try it.
There wasn't a playground as such, just some sort of rolling log walk that had no ladder or steps for the children to get up on it, a small sandpit (no toys) and a trampoline. The trampoline was the only usable item. The sandpit was left uncovered, as such could have been used by animals as a toilet, was full of leaves and such.
There were hardstandings with electric hookups but not water. No washing up areas, no fresh water that you could drink, there was a 'shed' that was supposed to be a shop, but it wasn't open while we were there (friday and saturday day)
Luckily, there was a supermarket about 3 miles up the road.

On arrival at the site the staff directed us down to the woodland where we were told we could pitch. We had booked a site big enough to pitch 4 large tents, but when we got there it was obvious that there was no where suitable to pitch even one. The site was water logged and muddy. There was no space for a large tent, and what spaces there were stepped out onto deep mud. We went back to reception and the staff were sorry but offered no explanation as to why a site was not available. They suggested that we go into the field instead. This was not what we had wanted but we gave it a look. We were the first into the field and decided that, as it was late, we would stay. The field was nice but as most of it slopes heavily you need to be the first there. The toilets are filthy, smelly and have no paper. The shower block is a long walk form the field and is very unpleasant - not to be used. There are other showers that are pay-as-you-go but I did not visit these.
The beer garden has some kids activities in it - a trampoline, rope swing etc but these are not particularly child friendly. No safety signs and some real hazards (a broken metal chair was placed under the swing leaving an exposed bar pointing upwards). Strangely, they chose to get a noisy petrol hedge cutter out and trim the hedge during Saturday lunch time; another indication of how badly managed the place is.
The site has few restrictions so it is good for partying. You can make noise at night and this is ok with the other site users, infact I would say that it is the good nature of the other customers there that makes it a site I would consider returning to.
If you are considering going there, I would suggest that you just turn up and have a look, there is no point in booking as spaces are not reserved, and if you don't like it you can turn round again. If you do like it, enjoy the party and leave washing till you get home!

Facilities were:- toilets (20 year old porta cabin, no lights, no hot water, no loo paper, not cleaned the four days we were there and one cubical in the mens was blocked to over flowing by the Sunday we left. My wife said the floor was unsound in the ladies and the condition was the same.)
Rubbish collection (non existent - another empty bin appeared on the sat and was promptly filled to overflowing like the other one was). Roads (although it was wet first two days we stopped, the roads were more like the Somme, there were cars parked very awkwardly and people seemed unwilling to move them).
On site Pub (nice food, but service ? .... We waited over an hour for our food, half the menu was off and watched with amazement as one couple ordered three different meals and successively after half an hour wait there were told that meal was no longer available.)
Overall the site seemed very cliquey 'new age even' with a lot of inconsiderate behaviour going on.

Gosh where do I start? We’d read the site was ‘quirky’ but it ended up as down right weird. Magical setting, long waits for food and kayak lifts, beautiful river, grotty loos, shop not open and aggressive bar-staff, read on!
We arrived and pitched up in the woods, the fact that the three families could camp together was great and we sent the kids off to buy firewood. The loos were pretty grotty all weekend but if you’ve been to a festival you’ll have seen worse. Didn’t bother with a shower!
The first night was a bit of a rave with a hen-night in the tipis and a 40th birthday party somewhere to our left. It was really loud and some of our kids (eight between 11 and 17) were upset, whilst some of them just went and joined in! The rest of us found a few bottles of red-wine made it quite entertaining. All was quiet by 2ish though.
The next day the older three kids had pre-booked kayaks and they headed off down the river. The rest of us went to Wye for a wander round. Very pretty town. When the kids finished kayaking 8 miles downstream they phoned the pub to be picked up and were told someone was on their way. After five phone calls and an irate parent going to the pub to find out what was going on the kids were eventually picked up – two hours after the initial phone call. Good job it was a sunny day!
On Saturday night, we decided to have a bbq and then go to the pub. The guy behind the bar was wearing a Stetson and denim jacket and we assumed he was with the band, he seemed really quite drunk but was cheerful enough and despite getting a Stella instead of a Becks (“it says Becks on the label”, “no it doesn’t, it says Stella”, “oh”) and almost falling over getting the Bacardi Breezers off the bottom shelf, we did end up with ten drinks. The next bit of conversation went like this
Stetson barman “that’s £35.50”
Assorted punters “laugh”
Stetson Barman “It’s £35.50”
My partner “It can’t be mate, there are 10 drinks, one is water and there are two halves of coke, that makes the drinks about £3.50 each”
Stetson Barman “Are you calling me a liar?' I’ve got a degree”
(Obviously not in Maths!)
My partner “No mate, can we just get someone else to add it up please?”
Cowboy “You pay or you fight me”
I was incredulous, this had gone from a bit of a drunk pratt behind the bar having a laugh to him standing there looking my partner in the eye and talking in a serious quiet voice “you pay or you fight me.”
I was so pleased that the kids were outside in the garden as the atmosphere was horrible. Another chap came behind the bar and offered to add up. Stetson Barman got really cross and tried to take the drinks away but somehow nice calm bar man took over and added the drinks up to £19.20, much better!
We took the drinks out into the garden and strangely did not feel like a second round so headed back to the camp.
It was a nasty way to end a weekend.
This site sells itself as a great ‘out in the woods’ experience with a bit of a holistic twist. My job involves working in woodland and I have to say that the place has potential to be a truly special one but needs some serious TLC, some basic cleaning skills and all staff to know a bit about basic customer service.

Myself and five of my friends came here for an atypical hen weekend. We're not into clubbing and drinking so wanting to get away for a weekend. We had a great time all in all but Hollybush is not for everyone.
We had booked the 6 person tipi for the weekend but when we arrived there was someone elses things in our tipi with the people nowhere to be seen. The staff were not especially concerned about getting it sorted out efficiently, although they were polite and friendly. They wanted us to use the 4 person tipi that the family who had set up in ours were supposed to have. As we had six people in our group we were not particularly keen on this idea and wanted to wait. When the family arrived back we ended up having to sort it out with them and the staff were pretty lax about it.
The tipis themselves are lovely - they all come with a chimerea inside which was lovely, and ours had a lantern hanging as well. They are situated in the wooded area, which is very pretty if a little shady.
The campsite is beautiful, right next to the river with a lovely pub as well although we didn't eat there. There was live music both nights we were there as well. As has been mentioned, the toilets and showers are not particularly pleasant, a fact made worse by the fact that you either have to pay for a shower or use the communal ones.
We found the staff helpful if relaxed. They lent us some milk and an airbed free of charge.
We also went canoeing with them - they are very reasonably priced, flexible with timings and gave us plenty of advice and lifejackets as well as coming to pick us up in the village when we had finished.
A downside, which couldn't really be helped was a massive stag party in a huge marquee next to our tipi. They assumed as we were a hen party we would want to join in with their rowdiness and so we were fending them off quite a lot. The lack of rules meant they stayed up till about three in the morning with a fire and lots of alcohol which was a bit annoying.
The whole weekend there were a lot of children running around which was nice - there is an excellent trampoline in the pub garden as well as a sandpit and other games. We were never sure which children belonged to which parents as they all seemed to run around together which created a nice, family atmosphere.
All in all, Hollybush is a lovely campsite and the beautiful setting and very reasonably prices make up for its flaws. If you're happy to fit in with their relaxed atmosphere then you'll have a great time there.

Stopped at the hollybush campsite Saturday the 23rd of may, and I can say I thought it was a wonderful site. Found the surrounding area to be very beautiful, the pub was very pleasant and the staff equally as pleasant and friendly. But there was a big downside to this site. The toilets/shower facilities were shocking to say the least. Not only inadequate, but dirty. If there was one thing this site lets itself down with, then its the toilets and showers. If these were to be improved with more modern and cleaner toilet/shower blocks then I could see the attraction of returning for many a wk end. I have based my ratings upon my outlook of the toilets, otherwise I'd have had to score 8 for all.

I went to this site for a long weekend & loved every minute of it. The pub was great, the beer was reasonably priced, the food was excellent & the landlady was a great hostess It rained heavy for a couple of days before I got there so it was a bit muddy but at this time of the year you have to expect it to be wet.

Having read all the other reviews, we were a tiny bit cautious when we booked in for a night here, but we were very pleased with the site. We stayed in our camper and had electric hook-up, on a hard standing pitch. We were one of only 2 groups staying that night, but there are a few regulars so it didn;t feel too deserted. The pub was great and did a good variety of food, the staff were friendly and laid back and there was live music as it was a Sat night. The grounds are stunning, and had the weather been better we would have hired canoes - hopefully we'll have better luck next time. If you are looking for one of those sites with luxury showers and mown grass, then this really isn't it - if you're looking for a site that's relaxed and a bit closer to nature, then this is perfect. We would certainly recommend this and we look forward to returning this year.

Stayed four nights from 26th Dec only us on site so we had loads of space. The site is great a small stream runs through the site and wood wich joins the river, kid's would love it here. Toilet block and showers ok but not 5 star. The pub you need to see it and make your own mind up. We thought it was great from leaving the van the smell of wood burning walking up the drive you new a big open fire was waiting to greet you. Good food and beer and most of all good company. The site is about 2 miles from Hay and a good base for touring. Ok now the constructive criticism, although the site was clean and tidy some things are best put out of sight, ie the area next to the shop old paint tins mixer etc, old glass windows by toilets old loo and water butts round the side. We will use this site again as we loved it.
