We couldn't believe our luck when we phoned this campsite and he said 'yes, you can have three pitches together and stay the whole of the bank holiday weekend'.
Went into the pub to pay our money and kid you not it was like walking into the dingles sitting room! Staff were very friendly but very slow. Were told to camp in the woods which we thought would be different and exciting. When entering the woods there was this overwhelming smell of pigs. So swiftly vacated and asked if there was anywhere else we could pitch. We were told to go to Dicks field. Dicks field looked great loads of room to pitch and play ball games.
The toilets were at the top of the field, there were 4 loos for the women and 2 loos and urinals for the men in a sorry looking portacabin. Do not even enter if you do not like creepy crawlies. For the whole of the weekend the only maintenance that was done was a few toilet rolls and after the first night there was no electricity so make sure you take your torch.
There were two shower blocks, one was free in a portacabin open plan for women, cubicles and doorless for the men. These showers were hot but again portacabin style, were not cleaned the whole weekend. The other block was near the pub and had two showers which cost money and were told were freezing.
The majority of the weekend it rained so the whole field was like a mud bath, slipping and sliding everywhere.
We liked the thought of being pitched together with no rules however some people took the no rules to their advantage and were up all night, revving cars, arguing, mini raves, people driving in and out at all times of the night without respect for others. Should have been such a brilliant place to stay right on the river but really had no facilities which let it down so much.
Would recommend Wye Valley Canoe hire just at the end of the road towards Glasbury. Also the Black Lion in Hay on Wye for a meal.

What you need to know about this site is don't expect the ritz! we stayed out on the field so we couldn't have a fire as these are only allowed in the wood. Sounded a bit strange until we found out that the pub share the field with a farmer & he likes to use it for hay etc.
Anyway as my hubby informed me the mens loo was in a much worse state than the ladies. But it served it's purpose. Don't bother taking your hairdryer there are no plugs in them.
I didn't fancy trying the shower block so couldn't say what they were like.
The main thing about this site is everyone is pretty tolerant of everyone else. Large groups are welcome which makes a change.
A very important note is if you are out at night there are no lights & it's v dark. So don't forget a torch or you will end up like us face down in the mud!
We are certainly going back to this site we may even try the canoes next time. You just have to have an open mind & take em as you find em!

We had a lovely peaceful pitch in the fields, overlooking the valley (personally I found the wooded area a little gloomy) - ample toilet provision - not the greatest, but certainly not the worst either. I found the showers quite ok, too.
The pub was nice and friendly and had a quirky atmosphere. My only gripe was the food - ours was overpriced and not outstanding, and finding that the curry price doesn't include rice and a poppadum - not really on
What struck me most of all though, was how friendly everyone was. These days I find a lot of campers bring their suburban selfish habits out with them, but not here at the Hollybush - and at the end of the day that's what we'll remember

This place is a little mad but was ideal for what my little boy and I were looking for. We hired a tipi for the night, which came with airbeds. The lady who owns the site, and everyone who worked there, couldn't have been more helpful. The toilet block was clean with loo roll, didn't try the showers as we hired a canoe from them the next day and paddled down the river Wye-too much risk of falling in to bother showering! They sent someone to pick us up when we called a few hours later (And gave us lots of advice before we set of.) The atmosphere here is great, we had a lovely meal at the pub, the evening we stopped and I felt very safe as a woman on her own with a young child and a dog. I recommend it but hope not too many people go and spoil it. If you are looking for the perfect site, this is not it. However, as my 6 year old said 'It was great no rules! And we could have a fire, just like real Indians!'

At first it's a shock, but get into the laid back style then a most enjoyable place.
We camped in the woods and sat around a camp fire with piglet's running around and peacocks squawking.
The old toilets are a disgrace, but the new blocks one's and showers excellent.
The pubs food is not great! (Ramsey would have a field day in that kitchen)

It's like a cross between Fawlty towers and a hippy commune; fun but chaotic.
It's fair to say that it's laid back and this attitude does extend to the toilet and shower block. However it's a lovely place to hangout and enjoy nature without being to caught up on rules and regulations. It's also one of a few campsites where you can actually camp right in a woodland and have a camp fire. You can buy wood at the site I'd be tempted to bring my own as what was available wasn't great.
The pub was nice with a lovely garden complete with peacocks strutting their stuff. Good range of real ales and live music on the weekend.
I liked the place and I will be back but I probably wouldn't spend along time there as the hygiene level would make me want a nice clean modern site!

The site is behind a nice, friendly pub. It has a grass area and woodlands and it borders the River Wye. A tumbling stream runs through the woods to the river.
An excellent site for families or individuals (disagree totally with previous reviewer). I was there on my own (plus my dog) but there were many familes enjoying a safe but fun environment for the kids. Children were having fun playing cowboys and indians in the woods, helped by the presence of real Tee Pees which are hired out (with heaters).
The owner keeps spotted pigs (currently with week-old piglets)and peacocks walk around the place. Camp fires are allowed using the stone circles provided in various places (wood is sold at £5 a wheelbarrow load) and there are also picnic benches strategically placed.
While I was there, there was large group of families in the top grass field having a whale of a time with barbeques and the kids enjoyed the big trampoline which is safely sunk into the beer garden.
Canoeing is available at £30 a day which includes collecting you from wherever you have landed (some make it to Hereford!).
On the down-side, the toilet and shower facilities were not as clean as I would have liked and some static caravans were very dirty which gave a poor first impression. On the other hand it's much cheaper than sites I've visited which have none of the fun facilities mentioned and I will certainly be going back.

We've been coming back to the Hollybush for years now, we find it's laid back attitude and beautiful surroundings perfectly suited to what we're looking for in a getaway; there are no over-the-top stuffy rules, few regulations (just the common sense ones like keeping dogs under control, which people MOSTLY adhere to) and you don't get the unpleasant feeling of staff breathing down your neck.
The fact that it's set on multiple levels in a beautiful piece of forest just next to the river Wye is enough to keep me happy, but the fact that you are considered adult and trustworthy enough to have campfires is the clincher.
Also, there is a lovley little pub on site selling a great range of beers and ciders (my dear friend Old Rosie included) and good food, cooked well and with real consideration given to vegetarians and vegans which is refreshing.
Yes, the site is rustic, the facilities aren't carved out of marble and polished to a mirror shine twice a day but you're camping not staying in a five star hotel. Every time we've been there the toilets have been absolutely fine (the mens were pretty grotty apparently, but where aren't they?!) with toilet paper, plus the floor was cleaned every morning.
The showers are warm and there is a block there at the moment that are free to use, but I don't know how long for.
One thing to definitely try is the canoeing, for a nominal fee you get a big canadian style open top beast with plenty of room for two people, a dog, and a big pile of supplies and the promise of a pick up from whichever pub you moor up at and eventually decide you've had enough in.
There's plenty to do in the town of Hay, which is really chocolate box pretty - and holds about a million festival each year for a variety of different things, although it gets really crowded so if you haven't come down especially for one I'd avoid the area at all costs.
Also a stones throw away are loads of excellent walks in the hills and plenty of other outdoor activities. I hear the fishing is good and there are plenty of shops, both for supplies and general retail therapy.
Between canoeing down the Wye and stopping for a boozy picnic on one of the little pebble beaches you get all to yourself along the way, cooking your dinner on an open fire, interacting with all the fantastic and friendly permanent residents there, swimming, walking, relaxing and constantly tripping over the free ranging peacocks and pigs (who've just had a brood of tiny piglets) I certainly never have the time to pick faults with the place. I can't. I love it.
It's been said time and time again that it's got a magical vibe to it, especially when the sun shines. As long as you don't mind roughing it a bit and putting up with the fact that not all the punters that stay there are middle aged couples with a penchant for scrabble you'll have a whale of a time.
I really, genuinely hope it never changes, it's a great place, run with the right attitude and the owners are lovely. Long live the Hollybush!

I would recommend the site to the young free and hardened campers only and certainly not for young families.
The available facilities were poor and in many cases did not work or were out of order.
The site is located within a woodland area and has the opportunity of providing a good level of outdoor activities.
One of the bonuses was without doubt having the pleasure of living with the wildlife i.E. The peacocks.

Went here just after Christmas, really enjoyed the peace and quiet.
Pub food a bit pricey but good quality. Ian the owner, very welcoming.
Our dog enjoyed the woodland walk as did our grandson, the small stream down to the Wye, through the wood, is great for younger children to splash about in. There is also a sunken trampoline, very safe for the kids. Older children would find the woods great fun.
Total silence at night.
Toilets fine, I imagine busy times could be difficult as showers limited to two for each sex.
There is a bus into Hay-on-Wye regularly, but I wouldn't risk the walk a there is a distinct lack of pavements on a dangerous road.
This is not a site for those expecting perfection, it is more rough and ready, but we like it.
Please do not expect any more entertainment than the pub, this site is fine for a really laid back break. So take a good book, walking boots and the dog, then relax.
