May 2005 If there is one thing this campsite needs (other than more toilet facilities) it is less campers! However, visiting at the beginning of the Hay-On-Wye Literary festival over the May bank holiday, it was never likely to be one man and his tent. Luckily this site has a huge field that can swallow up large amounts of canvas. The site was busy (mostly with well behaved quiet families), but not canvas-to-canvas, and did not detract from the truly breath-taking scenery surrounding us.
Following a spell of dry weather and the field's natural drainage system (a gentle incline with a fine river at the foot) the ground coped well with the huge swell of weekenders where other campsites may have become a rather messy quagmire.
As mentioned the toilet facilities were supremely inadequate for the number of visitors - with a shower count of one for the ladies and two for the men, and water supplies regularly running out for the whole site. This of course would not be a problem in quieter periods but is definitely something they will have to address over peak times.
Another gripe would be that, although the site is perfectly located only two miles out of Hay-On-Wye and easily walkable, there is unfortunately no footpath or at least not one that is clearly defined. We heard rumours that local farmers objected to ramblers streaming through their fields and had been know to chase offenders "Orf my [their] land" with the frightening visual aid of a shot-gun. Whether these are exaggerations or not, I think it is the duty of the campsite owners to push the council to create a clearly marked footpath through to the village, since walking along a pedestrian unsympathetic roadside is not only unpleasant but also dangerous.
Gripes aside this is definitely a good friendly site with a great vibe. Its piece de resistance is the pub that forms a comforting gatepost to the site. Not only does it serve great ales and food but also it serves late! Oh, it has a fab beer garden as well. I will definitely be visiting again – I’ll just pick a quieter weekend next time. 7 out of 10

June 2005 We visited this site during the Whitsun half term. This coincided with the ever-popular Hay festival and the site had hired an additional field from a local farmer & handed the responsibility of bookings etc. Over to Acorn (which added an extra 50% on to the adult per night price! The area that Acorn Adventure has taken over currently looks like some sort of refugee camp - plastic tents pitched in rows on the grass pitches as you enter the site. They also seemed to have taken over the "woodland pitches" and the shower facilities for the peak parts of the day (the toilets at this end of the site got really quite smelly towards the end of the week). Non-Acorn visitors were limited to "off peak" hours for use of the showers.
There was some major works going on in certain parts of the site, including the installation of an additional septic tank. In our field, which was some distance from the main shower & loo block, we had a portacabin toilet block with no electricity (Lights!?) and just cold water supply, which was inadequate over the Bank Holiday weekend. (this improved once the weekend passed)
Also campfires mentioned in a previous review were not to be - there was a £50 "fine" imposed to anyone holding campfires.
The week was not all bad - the Hollybrook Inn served excellent ale, real cider & perry, and the food was really good - fresh cooked, local produce, nicely presented... there was also live entertainment on the weekends, a hog roast, beer tent, trampoline, and sandpit for the kids. If you come here, be prepared for extremely basic facilities in the campsite but an excellent pub!

May 2005 I visited this site for 3 nights at the start of the 2005 Hay Literature Festival. Due to extra demand the owners opened an extra field for tents. This was a large open space with a sloping aspect that reached right down to the majestic river Wye. The field was excellent for pitching tents, and afforded great views of the surrounding hills and the river.
The facilities at this site varied in quality and capacity. The toilets and showers and water supply were not adequate for the sheer mass of people descending on the site at this time. The pub on the site was amazing. It offered decent food at all times, and served a wide range of real ales and ciders. The staff were also very friendly and helpful.
I would rate this site very highly, and would be happy to return - epsecially when it is quieter. The location was wonderful, with this being a very green and pleasant place to stay. The fees were reasonable at £4 per person per night.

May 2005 Acorn Adventure have made this camp site their base of operations in the Wye Valley from May to September. With a capacity for about 150 users (plus 30 staff) of the Acorn Adventure semi-permanent "Tented Village" from May to September, some of you may find the site a little crowded during this period, although the site is open all year.
The 2005 season has seen an upgrade to electrical capacity on this site, and more hook-up points are available in the increased hard standing area for caravans along the former railway line. The increased hard standing (for caravans, and used by Acorn Adventure's storage cabins) has meant losing some grassed areas for tent camping, but alternative secluded "forest floor" (not grassed) sites are available amongst the trees. Vehicle access to these sites is not yet possible, and if you are car-camping, you may be in for a lot of walking with your gear.
As of May 2005, the Inn is being refurbished, although still open for business. With a relocated bar that was moved overnight(!), it will take a little time to return the inside of the pub to something more than a building site - which comes complete with Akro- jacks supporting cracked lintels and hardboard panels and rugs covering the bare concrete floor.
Additional toilet facilities on the camp site (rather than in the pub) are planned. The present capacity of two cubicles and one urinal for the gentleman, and four cubicles for the ladies, seems insufficient for the numbers on the site. Two showers for each sex are available, only two of which can be heated using use coin-operated meters.
Visitor numbers are greatly increased by the use of a neighbouring field (with its own toilet facilities) during festival periods (such as the Hay Literary Festival at the end of May). All of the improvements are being undertaken in one season, so there is inevitably some disruption due to building works in 2005.
Basic cuisine at the pub such as ham, egg and chips is noticeable by its absence - although there is a smaller facility on the site (the Tuck Inn)offering take-away jacket potatoes with various fillings, and items such as toated ciabatta rolls. Coffee with the variety and prices normally associated with Starbucks or Costa Coffee are readily available. The standard of food though is good, and is served at most times (including late evening - up to 10:30pm in my experience). There is a new dining room separated from the bar with clean "new wood" furniture, and framed photographic prints of nature hung on the wall that can be bought for as little as £90.
The car park quickly fills up on Saturday evenings, as the Inn is a venue for a live band each weekend. Limited parking is available on the camp site. New to the venue is a "Drumming Circle" in the bar on Friday evening, from 6:30pm - 8:30pm, where you are invited to join the banging and crashing of some aboriginal instruments to discover your "inner rhythmn".
New for 2005, the site offers canoe hire for journeying down the River Wye. You may still launch your own boats from the natural landing steps and shingle beach for a fee of 50p per boat.

August 2004 If you are looking for a site that is rural and away from the crowds then this is it. We camped right inside the woods with a stream one side and the beautiful river Wye 100 mtrs.away. We were allowed to make a small campfire and enjoy camping as it should be done. With a clean shower and toilet block only minutes away this was our perfect location. The Hollybush pub is right on site serving lovely home cooked meals and canoe hire was very reasonably priced. We were even allowed to make a rope swing hanging from the trees. If you have older children then this is the place to go.

July 2004 Friendly staff and good location. The staff were more than happy to lend out maps of the area for anyone who needed them.
Shower block was basic, but clean. Food at the Hollybush was good, with a large specials board. I would certainly recommend the Giant Yorkshire!

July 2004 After an increasingly frantic search for a suitable campsite in the Hay area (i.e. one 'authentic' enough to satisfy my wannabe boy scout boyfriend whilst easing a camping novice such as myself into the joys of the great outdoors), we happened across Hollybush and found the ideal combination.
Ideally located just outside Hay-on-Wye the site still maintains a real rural feel thanks to a beautiful woodland, streamside setting. Loos and hot shower facilities provide just the right level of home comforts to appease even homebodies like me. And, with the added bonus of fantastic pub food right on the doorstep (the Hollybush Inn serves very reasonably priced, homecooked food with some great veggie options), I certainly wasn't complaining - much to the boyfriend's relief!
All in all, a lovely site with a really friendly atmosphere, the necessary amenities and a perfect setting. Thank you, Hollybush, for a painless introduction to what I think will now be the first of many camping holidays.

May 2004 How refreshing to find a site that alows you to camp in the woods, light a fire and fall in the river.
We found Hollybush by accident but will surely return. in these days of hand-holding health and safety regulations, its great to go to a place that lets you be responsible for yourself!
Great location, friendly people, lovely food in the pub.
That's not to mention the beer tent, hog roast, minibus to Hay, canoeing....
Thanks guys, don't change a thing!
