Just got back from a weekend at The Holly bush. We were in a group of half a dozen or so adults with a couple of kids and a dog - varying vintages from 13 to 50 years old and each of us with a good degree of camping experience under our proverbial belts. NOT ONE OF US had cause to complain about the campsite. I cannot comment on the Ladies but the Gents were clean, regularly looked after and also eco-friendly. Food at the pub was superb - for those who want their food faster - try McDonalds - this is freshly prepared and cooked, it takes longer - get used to it! Live music in the pub was superb on Friday night & OK on the Saturday. The beer garden is a lovely place to chill out and let the kids bounce around on the trampoline. The walk down to the 'beach' has been made easier by the use of railway sleeper steps and is well worth it when you get to the river - again another place to chill out or to skim stones. There is a 'vibe' to camping at the Hollybush and it doesn't appear to have much time for rampant consumerism (we had to chase the site owner to pay our camping fees!). Try and fight the vibe and you may be disappointed, go with it and you will hopefully have as wonderful a time as we did!

Whilst the 'site' (ie the field) itself is superb, the facilities leave a lot to be desired. The toilets are a bit rough, and the showers, when we were there, (June 2006) were non exsistent. The meals at the pub are quality, although a little slow in coming. Access to the river is good, but steep for disabled, but manageable.

This site is wonderful. If you're a rampant consumer in a hurry then you might not like it - which is fine, more room for us chilled-out types. Children love it too - because there isn't always some busybody telling them what they can't do. The trampoline has now been lowered into the ground, which I thought was a good move. The pub. The pub is great! It's a place to be - not a place to be seen. The service can be very slow - this is a relaxed place, but it is friendly and the wait is worth it! Don't stroll in at 8.00 when you're hungry and expect to eat at 8.30, this is not a harvester which uses freezers. The food is high quality. Go there at 7. Enjoy the vibe, a few drinks in the garden, maybe have some nibbles and when you're totally relaxed, the excellent, and I mean excellent, food will taste even better when it arrives at 8ish. Maybe 8.30ish. We've been to this site many times. It's a perfect location for people who really know how to live the relaxed life. Toilets shmoilets. If you won't go into a loo without a crocheted dolly on the bog roll and wall to wall airwick perfume thingies, then this isn't for you. These toilets are a damn sight better than most european toilets and knock spots off Glastonbury. There could be more of them mind, and more showers.

I can't believe some of the other reviews. We arrived with 3 small tents at the beginning of the Hay festival last year. The weather was scorching and the campsite was brilliant. Yes OK, a few more showers would have been nice but it was fine. The toilets were adequate in number and fine with quality and cleanliness. We were in the large field sloping towards the river and were there for 4 nights. There were hardly any other tents there! Certainly not crowded. On top of this, the pub is the best one for miles. Food is excellent, different, plentiful and cheap. Lots of lovely ale, cider and perry. There is a bus stop right outside the pub. Would go there again in a jiffy.

This has got to be the worst site I've ever been on, even considering the time of year. The 'roads'were nothing but mud tracks,s hower and toilet facilities digusting, generally disastrous.
The proprietors were friendly, but that did little to compensate for the state of the campsite. The pub itself is in various stages of unfinished projects, uneven floors, with an assortment of rather grubby carpets covering the unfinished floor.
In fairness, the food was good, but not really a menu that catered for all tastes, and a bit on the expensive side. Each visit to the bar saw me paying a different price each time for the same drinks.
The site is in a fantastic location, and could be a smashing campsite.

August 2005 Price had doubled on arrival - after speaking to owner when booking and offering a deposit and agreeing a price - they were not prepared to except the previous agreement. Large site - only a couple of toilets no lights working - no hot water and falling apart. Shop was only a tuck shop for children selling sweets. Showers were disgraceful - those who darred to enter wore shoes. Road was a dirt track. Large field - grass a over foot tall and full of animal excrement. The pictures on this website do not reflect how the site now looks - Could be a lovely site with some care and attention as it has a lovely location. Hay on Wye and Brecon Beacons a lovely delight to see & Llanthony Abbey / Priory is a must.

August 2005 A very basic campsite. Visited this August Bank holiday and was impressed. Loads of room to pitch our two tents and cordon off an area with wind-breakers to stop the kids from roaming too far. Beautiful views, an easy walk to the river where the kids (1, 2 and 4) could safely paddle, throw stones and catch fish with their nets.
More showers could be provided but the camping was cheap and you get what you pay for. I wouldn't stay for a week but for a long weekend it was ideal.

August 2005 I personally think the revious review is a little harsh. The Hollybush does seem slightly disorganised and a little shabby but the large field is perfectly adequate for a few nights stay. It probably isn't the best site to take young children as facilities for them are lacking but if you can live without your creature comforts and your electrical hook ups its an ok site. We would go back.

June 2005 I don't mean to sound rude but I would like people to know how awful this campsite is. I don't really know where to start - The field with electric hook ups is no bigger than a postage stamp and could not accommodate our 3 x 6 berth tents (only 1 other tent in field when we got there). The caravans on site are parked on a road of rubble which leads to a second field. There are several tents on site which look as if they are occupied by a hippy commune. The second field looks quite nice but it is miles away from the toilet block. The toilet block is disgusting! And I definitely would not let my children walk around this site without an adult - not much fun for them. Fortunately for us a full refund was given without any problem!

June 2005 Totally agree with previous comment, in fact, we were so unimpressed that we didn't even bother to pitch our tent on the excuse of a field that they had, right by the toilets. Got our money back and moved on.
