Beautiful campsite, with a choice of fields or woods to pitch your tent in. Its very laid-back with a festival atmosphere, thankfully free of most of the usual rules and regulations, and the staff are friendly. Our visit coincided with the Hay festival so it was very busy, and it was standing room only in the pub. If patience isnt your virtue then best not come here, as there is a long wait for everything - the promised "half-hour's time" pickup after our canoe trip turned into two hours (not good when you are cold and wet) and food took ages (although in fairness we were warned about this!). The toilets were adequate, with plenty of loo roll, but the shower I tried was useless, a lukewarm piddle of water for £1. Thankfully I hadnt put any shampoo on my head, as I would have had to go to the river to wash it off! In the summer this site would be lovely, but sadly we were rained out as the field turned into a Glastonbury-style quagmire.

The Hollybush is a great site - owners are friendly and laid back. The pub has a nice atmosphere and serves good beer (I didn't try the food). There is a section of hard standing for caravans then 2 large sloping fields which lead down to the river Wye and a woodland area. There were 2 toilet blocks within easy reach of the camping area and a shower block a bit further away. The toilets were cleaned every day and had plenty of loo roll when we stayed there. You can hire canoes from the pub and they will come and pick you up in a few hours time from either Hay or the pub at Whitney on Wye. Its also easy to get to the river for a paddle. This is not a formal site - you just follow the drive past the caravans and pitch your tent where you fancy. The fields are big enough so that you're not on top of your neighbour! if you are looking for kids club, marked out pitches, a swimming pool etc, then this is not the site for you!

It's difficult to know where to start when reviewing the Hollybush Inn campsite. The place is a large rambling mix of different things - part shambolic country inn, part Indian menagerie (with peacocks looking and sounding exotic), part hippy commune, part caravan site for construction workers (the menacingly named 'pipeliners'), part woodland adventure park. I couldn't help but be charmed by the site, especially the excellent pub and the eccentric owners (Ian has to be observed in action to be believed). The facilities range from the superb (the on site pub does a good range of beers and ciders, and the place has a 24 hour licence for a wooden hut - which may not be to everyone's liking) to the adequate (the toilets are pretty rough portable ones). I would also like to warn people that the drive onto the large camping field can be treacherous in wet weather. [This is my only weather note. I'm aware that too many reviews of sites turn into descriptions of the meteorological conditions on a particular day]. The area surrounding the site is exceptionally beautiful, and the famous book town of Hay on Wye is about two miles from the Hollybush. The site offers stunning views of the local countryside in the form of the river Wye and the lush wooded hillsides of the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains. In conclusion, this site is well worth visiting, and I will definitely be returning here.

We read the reviews before arriving, so thought we knew what we might expect. First impressions were mixed: the location was good, being by the riverbank, and the site was very quiet. Reception is via the Pub - a nice way to start a holiday :o)
The area where we pitched had five vacant hardstandings, all with hook-ups. There were other units on the pitch which appear to be semi-permanent (covered in algae but hooked-up and occupied). The toilet blocks are breeze-block buildings with 2 showers and two loos. The blocks are unheated and the showers take 50pence pieces for a 3 minute shower.
Our first evening was magical - walking the dogs by moonlight on a frosty evening alongside a glassy-smooth river Wye. A group had lit a fire in the woods by the riverbank and were quietly singing beneath a perfect star-studded sky. Bliss :o) The morning brought a rude awakening - crossing to the amenities block I found that the loos were both dirty and the floors littered with roll-up fag butts. The loo paper holders were all empty, as was the paper towel holder by the wash basins. One shower had a curtain but didn't work. The other worked but had no curtain. The coin box was outside, by the external door - meaning a naked dash to insert money while praying the door remained closed! To be fair, the wife said the ladies block was clean.
We stayed for three nights and had planned to stay a week - but after three days the loos remained uncleaned and were now totally soiled and squalid. They were still devoid of paper. The ladies washroom had also deteriorated - someone was doing dishwashing in the vanity sinks and the wife didn't fancy cleaning out the grease and baked beans before washing. It could easily be a beautiful site, but someone needs to do some basic maintenance before we would return again.

Absolutely mint! We are a group of 18-20 yr old lads who found it hugely difficult to locate a site that would accept a group of young men, this campsite was particularly accomodating and had nothing but time for us. We found the site completely by accident after setting off first thing in the morning from west yorks with the intentions of going to scotland. Then found out my dopey friend had programmed into his sat nav an address for the wrong 'Hollybush Inn' in a completely different country! Still, the site is in a great place, we had tons of fun, we have yet to fully experience the pub on site, but will definitely be doing so this friday when we visit again. Our trip to the Hollybush Inn is becoming somewhat of a reunion for us, a trip we intend to take annually. Our first trip to the site was, I think the other guys will agree, one of the most hilarious times of our lives, as massively in experienced campers, everything that could go wrong, did go wrong, but that was half the fun. Yes, the amenities are minimal, and a bit run down, but who cares? It's better than going behind a bush! my friends and I loved this place, and even though it always chucks it down and we get soaked and muddy, it's hilarity at it highest! If you intend to go for a relaxing weekend break, probably not the best site for you, but for a great time and atmosphere, with laid back rules, this is the best around!

It's very simple: if you are looking for a smart, regimented and formal campsite DO NOT GO HERE. However, if you are looking for a much wilder, more relaxed place with great character, the opportunity to have campfires, be in the cover of woodland with a stream running through, right next the river Wye - then DEFINITELY GO HERE. Actually no - please don't, please leave room for those of us who have already enjoyed this place and want to go back.
We went over the August bank holiday when the site was really busy - populated by a mixture of rowdy party makers, quiet couples and a large family party who took up a considerable portion of the site. We took our dog who made loads of friends amongst the children on site and no one demanded that we keep her on a leash, which can be a nightmare when camping (I should point out that she is a well-behaved dog). Some lads camping nearby helped us pitch our tent in the dark. The attached pub was really friendly, with eccentric but enjoyable live music and top notch cider and real ales on tap. The campsite staff were completely unobtrusive.
We loved it so much we are going back there for a short stay this weekend. Can't wait to stand by that wide river again.

This is not your typical camping/caravan site with mowed lawns, strict rules etc. Anyone expecting this will be disappointed. However, if you want freedom, friendliness and a laid back perspective then this is the camp site for you. It can get crowded on weekends in peak season but if you stay during weekdays or out of season, it is a totally different experience. The setting is idyllic, woods, river, country pub, in the middle of the countryside but only a couple of miles away from the town of Hay-on-Wye. Yes, the owners are "different" but they will go out of their way to help you and treat you as a friend. They are very trusting and should be afforded the same treatment in return. I have nothing but praise for this site. Long let it remain the same

The words hippie commune, postage stamp, ruff and unorganised are the words that spring to mind when I think of this site. We had the miss fortune of booking this sites for the bank holiday weekend. We had seen the reviews for this site before we went but they were pretty mixed,so as we thought we would give it the benefit of the doubt (each to there own and all that). We wished we had listened all the bad reviews as they are true. We had a pitch no bigger than a postage stamp we couldn't even pitch our trailer tent .We were told by a lady (who we assume was the owner, very strange woman with no shoes you may call her a hippie) that our pitch was the best as we had all the amenity's toilets and a campfire (and drunk swearing people and constant flows of people walking past.) There wasn't a hook up because the pitch wasn't a proper pitch we were told to run our lead across the road in to a wooden shack or into her caravan that was about 30years old and had never been moved.(hell no!). We didnt even stay the night as we didnt want to be cramped on a peace of grass and we didnt feel safe. You have to see it to believe it.

Having read every review on this site spanning back 2 years, I am pleased to say that the Hollybush has turned a corner whilst retaining the inherent charms which attract people over and over again. As a city-dweller craving to escape the monotony of 9-5 life for the weekend, I was on a mission to find a location to enable me to fulfil a 17 year promise to a pal from school and go 'camping' again.
Despite the elements being against us, we arrived on the Friday and were able to pitch our tent in the woodland area flanked by a stream and yards from the River Wye before seeking shelter in the pub where the owners muttered two golden phrases ''If you are hungry, you get fed'' and ''If you want a drink, you can have one!''. Any restaurateurs out there take note! As 'good food always takes time to prepare' the wait was well worth the while washed down with a couple of pints of the local brew.
Saturday morning was spent shooting, arranged through the Black Mountain Activity Centre 2 miles up the road which gave the HollyBush team a chance to prep up our canoe for our overnight adventure. One day and 20 miles later a quick phone call to Camp HollyBush and we were picked up and whisked back to base where the staff joined us in attempting to pack our tent up. you know the one. you throw it in the air and as if by magic a full blown tent before your eyes, what they forgot to mention was that it is like a Rubik's cube to pack up!
Back to the pub for another pint and a roast dinner with all the trimmings before heading back home, shattered, relaxed and having met some truly attentive and friendly people who helped make the weekend and the completion of my longstanding promise, that little bit more special.
The toilet/shower block whilst compact was adeqaute and with a co-op supermarket 10mins down the road the small shop served its purpose. Railway sleepers provide a novel way to descend into the woodland but you need to be fit and able to negotiate this.
Overall a bit of a let down Pfft! Discover your inner self and drop on by for something a bit different! Will be visiting again and will recommend to friends and family.

Heaven on earth - this is a campsite with SOUL! We pitched in the woods, lit a (responsible) campfire and lay back, looking up at the towering pine trees surrounding the tents. At 1am a young fox came right up to us to see what grub was on offer. You can hire a canadian canoe from The Hollybush, paddle leisurely down the River Wye, then ring them for a pick-up. Lovely laid-back folk and superb vibes in the pub itself. You feel WELCOME here - it's the complete antidote to those sites where you get stiff-necked JobCentre-styled proprietors. Sublime! Just go for it! And you'll love!
