Lovely people and a lovely site, but not that good for touring caravans. the road is very very narrow to get down, hardly any passing places, then the lane into the site is gravelly and big boulders, we got stuck trying to get off site as the drive was gravelly and steep.

Ideal for tents, but would not go again with caravan, the views and the walks are wonderful.

The price is a bit steep at £24 night with elec for the way the drive into it is.

Had to travel into sedbergh for shops which are good and pubs for meals good.

Stayed here 2 nights over the bank holiday weekend. The site was a little waterlogged but had to be expected given the weather that week.

There is a working farm, and great for the kids as there are farm tours and animal feeding available, although we didn't take up the option when we stayed. The site is very big, with statics and tourers in one field (where we pitched for elec hook up) and another large tent field adjacent to it.

Beautiful views from everywhere on the site, and there is a lovely walk along the river too.

It has a great indoor soft play area for kids, and ride on toy tractors in one of the barns.

Lovely looking cafe/tea room, very pleasant staff and the animals are very friendly.

The toilets/showers require some attention, as are dated, but functional enough, and got the impression work was ongoing to improve.

Would definitely return to this site again, hopefully if we get a better summer in 2013

This was everything I hoped for. A big open field, pitch where you like and only 5 tents in the field when we arrived mid-week. We were lucky with the weather which was glorious.

The farm is beautifully isolated surrounded by hills, open fields and river. There is a great play area on the farm and you can take a tour to meet the animals which our children loved. The nature trial is a nice relaxing walk. It felt safe to let my children run off and play with the other little campers. The bonus is that you can have an open fire in the evening which was great and took me back to my days in the cub scouts when we went on camp.

The only downside are the facilities which are very basic. I want a shower that works! My wife commented that had there been a better toilet/shower block she would have happily stayed for the week however she was ready to get home after two days without a proper wash! Holme farm are missing a trick here - improve the shower block and they have a great site which will attract far more visitors in the future - not sure I want that?

We really enjoyed it here. We stayed with a two and a half year old and two adults. It cost us £16 per night.

While the other reviews cover off the facilities, yes they are basic, yes there is only one washing up sink (we didn't find a queue) and the urinals do pong at times. I found they were adequate considering I was choosing to camp rather than stay in a hotel / cottage/ B&B.

I enjoyed the setting, the farm, the farmer was friendly, there was a soft play place brilliant if rains (included in the price). You could camp where ever you liked and have a camp fire. It felt quite free and easy without lots of rules.

We really enjoyed the location. There is a nature trail, lots of animals to look at and a wide river that you can paddle/ use nets in.

We would love to go back and had some lovely neighbours.

Stayed as an overnight on return from Skye and Lewis. Site is a mile or so down a narrow track off the main road so care is needed driving.

Pitched in static field as we had dogs with us. Lovely walks around the site, didn't see the badgers but evidence of their pathways, herons, bats and in the morning a couple of pigs were let loose on the caravan field, evidently a regular occurrence as they were fed by some of the caravan owners. Chickens and cats also wander free around the farmhouse and buildings.

Camping field said fully booked but there were only about five tents on it. Unless there was a big group booking due?

Facilities adequate without being special but if you go camping for the surroundings and atmosphere this site is perfect. You can have campfires but it was a bit windy when we stayed and we'd to be up and away in the morning so no late night for us.

We have just got back from a 2 night stay at Holme Open Farm. The review is a bit mixed but overall I did like it there and I would be tempted to go back if a few issues were resolved.

Good Points:

The owners are helpful and pleasant. The farmer and his mother are especially nice and chatty etc.

The location is amazing, stunning views and only 20 minutes from Kendal, 5 from Sedburgh which is a lovely town

The animals - my kids loved seeing all the farm animals and feeding the sheep etc.

Fishing on the river at the bottom of the field.

We pitched on the caravan field (EHU) but it was nice and flat and well draining as it did chuck it down a couple of times. The grass could of done with a mow though.

Campfires are allowed.

Soft play area for the kids indoors which is priceless when it's honking it down, toy tractors etc to ride on in covered picnic barn

Bad Points:

Facilities are a bit grotty, they look clean enough but there are swarms of flies in there at times and a bit of a pong. Limited washing up facilities and a mirror would of been nice!

The caravaners at the bottom of the field who are 'regulars' and stay up until 2am shouting and swearing. There seemed to be a group of 2/3 caravans involved with more arriving on our departure day. One particular child of theirs took to throwing bikes/furniture about in the middle of the field screaming.

The last bad point is why we cut the trip short one night, we didn't feel safe letting our kids out playing on that field once they had arrived. We informed the farmer and he said he would have a word but just kind of shrugged and said they were 'regulars'. He did refund us that nights stay though.

As the place itself is so lovely we would love to go back, we would have to stay on the non EHU camping field though to avoid the 'regulars'. I am torn with giving this place a bad review because of them, even baring in mind the grotty bogs it is a beautiful site. If you are camping non EHU then go for it, if not.

Felt I should leave a review about the site after reading mixed reviews on here. I was a bit apprehensive about staying but have to say we had a fantastic time.

You can pitch where you like so we were well spaced out even though it was a busy August weekend.

The views are amazing and you really feel you are in the middle of nowhere, but it's only 15 minutes to Kirkby Lonsdale.

We had pigs visiting the tent, which the children loved and they were able to see goats, cows, sheep, chickens wandering around the site. Also, there is a lovely circular walk which takes you down by the river and enabled us to have a paddle - children were in their element.

There is a new small soft play area for the children which would be great on a rainy day but we didn't have one! You get free play per child per night.

Now the facilities! Yes, they are basic but clean enough and you are told when you ring up that it is basically a field and basic loos and showers. The site was really busy on the first night but we didn't have to queue for the loos or showers - 3 ladies loos and 2 unisex showers.

The shower is a bit of a dribble and was hot one day and luke warm the next. It's also a bit off putting washing your dishes in the toilet block although there is a dedicated washing up sink.

However, these are all things the kids couldn't give a monkeys about and the rest of the experience was so spot on for them it wouldn't put me off going back at all.

It did quieten down after 11 but people did stay up later than that round their fires so there was some noise but just chatter really - to be expected when open fires are allowed.

Price was 19 per night for a family of 4 - a bit steep given that the facilities are not that great and as a previous review said, it is unusual to charge for babies but that said, he got the soft play ticket!

All in all - don't be put off by the facilities because this is a gem of a site!

This site looked really good on the website & from previous reviews sounded great. I booked it at £14 per night but on arrival was charged £19. 50 the woman refused to co-operate & told me to leave if I didn't like it but since we had travelled to get there & had kids we had no choice but to pay. She has since changed the prices on the website. We like basic sites but the toilet block/washing up/showers all in one room was a bit much. The pot wash is right next the urinal & young children can hear, smell & worst of all see men doing there business. The stench in the morning was stomach wrenching. There is a sink hanging off the wall outside the ladies loo door with exposed water pipes & copper piping, if you like wildlife then you'll be ok as there are spiders, cobwebs, flies. There is only 1 loo & one urinal for men & 2 showers unisex, 3 loos for women & one & a half sinks. I thought I'd use the disabled room as it didn't seem busy, I had to duck to get in, no ramp but a huge step up (not good for wheelchairs) The sink outside of the cubicle was full of dead flies & spiders & looked like it hadn't been cleaned for a while. There are no freezing facilities on site for your blocks. Ladies don't take your hairdryer there is nowhere to plug it in & men can't have a shave which was not a problem as we only stayed the weekend. We where meant to stay all week but due to the above we decided not to bother which is a real shame as otherwise the site could be great. At £19. 50 for 2 adults & 2 kids I've been to rougher sites that have better basic facilities, or at least a freezer.

Great site, we found a little gem with this site and we will return again and again, David and angela are great and nothing is too much trouble. The noise rule could do with being enforced a bit more but overall a great place we will be back to very soon. We have been to many sites in the lake district but never found one as good as this, maybe its just us but we love the peace and quiet this site offers, we also loved the way we could have a camp fire more or less anywhere though we did make sure it was not a huge fire as we hope we are responsible campers.

We really like the fact we can pre book a pitch for a tent as not many sites seem to offer this facility.

Overall we seemed to have all we wanted at this site, the river at the bottom of the field, peace and quiet and no dogs making a mess of the site, we are already planning our next visit in a couple of weeks.

I stopped here for one night while on a cycle tour of Cumbria. It's a proper working farm so there is mud and farm stuff around. I got there and couldn't find anybody to check in with, there being notices saying not to just pitch up. However that was sorted out and the people there are actually really helpful, just busy.

The site is really just a big field and there was plenty of space to choose from. The loos and showers are in an old farm building and are a bit rough and ready round the edges but clean in all the right places! Lots and lots of hooks in the showers, which were nice and warm.

It's in a lovely location with hills all around and Sedburgh not far away. I cycled to and from the site via a delightful little narrow road which would make a lovely walk to the town. When you get there you've got the choice of several tea-shops - I went to Howgills cafe and bakery, which was very good.

It's a site I would definitely consider coming to again, and stay for longer.
