When we arrived at Sheldon House Farm, it was very muddy as we'd had a week of constant rain. The owners directed us to the far field and suggested pitching around the edges where it drains well. Getting to our pitch was difficult due to the field being so wet. Once at our pitch it wasn't too bad and the forecast for the following few days was good so we were hoping it would dry out, which it did quite well.
The owners have invested in drainage ponds which appear to be working as they are full of water. My only suggestion would be that these would be better fenced of. We were pitched on the opposite side of the field so the children had plenty of space between us and the ponds to play. I would have been very nervous if we'd have been nearer and would have had to have the children in view all the time. The site is very exposed and you take a 'battering' if the wind and rain decide to visit!
The views are beautiful and the location is perfect for walking. We didn't need to take the car out for days as there was plenty of walking to do from the site. Butterton is a nearby village worthy of a visit, it is very pretty with a shop / post office (we never caught it open though)and a pub. The children loved it here as there was a ford for them to paddle in.
The facilities are generally good, would like to have had a sink with hot water to wash pots, we did this at the tent with a boiled kettle but could have been easier with a sink. The showers are fine, there are 2 in each and I had hot water everytime. The site was quiet so we had no queues, but I can imagine with a busy weekend you'd have to wait your turn. There was a 20p charge for the shower and I used 40/60p each time, although my husband always managed with one 20p! They were cleaned more than once a day and there was always plenty of toilet roll.
Overall, we had a lovely stay at Sheldon. The owners are very helpful and happy to suggest places to visit etc.
This is a site we would return to.

We chose this campsite as we couldn't get in anywhere closer to Tissington in order to visit the well dressings. However, it's not too far from Tissington so no problems there. The directions to the site were pretty rubbish on the website though, much easier to get there by finding the village of Onecote off the Ashbourne - Leek road and following the road to the campsite!
Anyway, we got there after some helpful directions from a lady who seemed very concerned we were staying there due to its exposed location. Luckily, the weather wasn't windy! We did get there to find a very, very wet field and almost couldn't get the car back off the field after pitching the tent, so on returning from the local pub, we left it at the top of the field on some gravel.
The staff were really nice and approachable, helped us out with finding the local pub. The Jervis Arms is a few minutes down the road in Onecote and I can't recommend it highly enough. It's not huge but is lovely and the food was great and well-priced.
The facilities on the site were reasonable. We didn't end up using showers so can't really comment on those. Toilets seemed clean enough, though I couldn't find the light switch to come on over the loos so if you go to the toilet at night, beware! There are only small sinks so it would be pretty difficult to have a strip wash if you wanted to. That said, the site owners have said they're still working on new facilities. There's evidence of this everywhere, but wish I'd asked what the facilities were going to be. I imagine it would be larger toilet blocks, pot washing and so on because given the size of the site I imagine it will get very busy in the height of summer!
I agree with a previous reviewer about watching noise levels. We ended up near one tent which had a small child which was constantly throwing wobblies, waking us up at 5.45 one morning. Another tent had two dogs which barked every time we moved, which was a real pain in the backside, particularly when taking our tent down!
Overall, a nice site. The waterlogged field is nobody's fault, after all we can't help the weather. However, the staff would quite happily get their tractor and pull you out if necessary. Also, the male owner came round on his quad bike on the Saturday evening and checked everyone was OK and had no problems. So in terms of customer service, you couldn't fault them. Facilities clean but do need to be made bigger and more practical.
The location is absolutely superb, though I agree I don't think I'd want to be up there if it was windy, so bear that in mind!

I visited this site over the Spring bank hol weekend with my wife and two children(age 18months & 7yrs)plus my mother-in-law.
Due to heavy rain we had phoned the site in advance to check the conditions for pitching the tent and were told it was drying out and there should be no problems, however we arrived to find out that of the 4 pitches left with electric only one wasn't waterlogged! The water also doesn't drain away easily due to the high clay content in the soil.
Considering the size of the site 2 toilets and 2 electric showers in the men and womens was inadequate (be prepared for either a freezing cold shower or a 2 minute scalding shower which your 20p gets you!)
The owners were friendly and kindly recommended somewhere to eat and helped us out with a cup of sugar on the Saturday. In our opinion tents & caravans should be separate, more showers and toilets provided(with hot water that lasts longer)and fencing around the large pools of water.
Also the owner should monitor noise levels as certain people seem to think that as they are on holiday their children have the right to run wild late into the night and people with young children should not take there children camping as this is normal, which I re-assure you isn't.

Just got back form this site over the Easter bank holiday.
There had been heavy rain before we arrived leaving the site very muddy and boggy (the car got stuck! as its not tarmacked or pebbled to the top of field) that said we found a dry pitch the glorious bank holiday weather soon dried the site out.
The shower and toilets which are separate male and female, were kept clean despite the terrible mud. The electricity hook-up were accessible and near to all the pitches
The owners were a lovely couple, always had time for everyone. Our four year old daughter still keeps talking about the sheep, the fish, and a ride on the quad bike from the owner!
There is lots to do locally and there are some great pubs near by but all in driving distance, together with the amazing views, means that we will return to this site.

We had our wedding reception here last summer (August 08) and it was fantastic! The campsite is in such a gorgeous location with stunning panoramic views. The toilet and shower block is spacious and clean (excellent for some of our guests who were first time campers). And last, but by no means least, the owners are lovely and so so helpful and kind. All in all we had a wonderful wedding weekend and would recommend the campsite wholeheartedly.

I went to this site with my pregnant wife who hadn't been camping since she was a child!
The owners were lovely - provided some eggs when we ran out!
When we visited, as stated by other reviewers, the site was in its infancy.
They had 2 fields for tents and some hardstandings for caravans / campers.
There are some Electric hookups but mostly near the caravan areas.
The toilet blocks were clean. They are a bit of a trek from the camp field through the farm yard.
They could do with more facilities - tables and areas to put things by the wash sinks plus washing up area. I believe the intention is to add more facilities over time.
The views are stunning as this is on top of a hill over looking the surrounding valleys.
The only issue we had was it was a very windy and wet weekend - great choice for trying to convince my wife camping was the thing to do!
Due to the exposed position the site suffered badly from the cross winds and then the driving rain.
So if you have good weather and/or want good views then go for it.
If you want sheltered camping - this may not be the location for you.
Excellent value site.
Clean facilities
Amazing owners.

Had a great weekend on this camp site. 2 tents, 4 adults and 1 dog. Lovely views from the field, nice and big so not crowded.
Very exposed to wind and rain but worth it for the view.
Very clean and nice toilets and shower.
Stayed here whilst on a hang gliding training weekend so a truly memorable trip.
Easy to find from the road. Very muddy as wet weekend, advise you to leave car near farm so don't get stuck at far end of field!

We stayed here for one night to try out a new tent, couldn't have picked a nicer spot! The views from the site are amazing. The owners were really laid back and friendly, told us to pitch where-ever, told us which field was driest, then came around to check every-one was OK later on. Toilet block fine, water nice and hot, need at least 2x20p. For shower. The site is very exposed, I suspect it's windy most of the time, but our tent stood up fine to wind / rain. Will definitely return for a longer stay.

Lovely farm site,a bit exposed but fantastic views. Footpaths to walk from the site (we walked to Manifold Valley) and plenty more in easy reach. I have to agree that in wet conditions it does get a bit muddy and waterlogged but the owners had thoughtfully kept the grass in the camping field on the long side which meant less mud all round.Particularly on shoes and the tent! Toilets and showers all clean, although could do with a few more perhaps and we were told will have some more by next spring. Us ladies could also do with a few more hooks or shelves in the ladies facilities! Really lovely owners, very friendly and approachable. My kids helped feed the fish and were enchanted by the calves wandering about freely. Made me remember why we choose this sort of site. But quirky and individual which makes a memorable camping break.

A big huge thank you to cynthia & david, nothing was too much trouble and the kids loved petting the calves and playing ball with the dogs, and climbing on the haystacks. We have a tent but opted to stay in their absolutely lovely cottage we being 2 adults & 2 children age 12 & 14. We all had the best time, the views were stunning a bit out of the way for shops etc, but that was no problem as we had the car. Very close to Alton towers which the kids loved. The cottage was very well equipped and very tastefully converted and decorated. There are very good ladies and gents toilet/shower rooms which was handy for the kids when they were out playing on the field. It was a really great weekend, and we will definitely be going back there next year.
