Summer is not summer without a visit to Welsummer.
We have now been here four times, three years in a row and are going back in Sept 2011. I love the place so much I decided to host my 40th birthday party there, taking (dragging?) my 4 siblings and their families, plus some friends, to go camping. Sept 18th would have been ideal, but the site was too busy, so we took a gamble on Sept 25th. We had the honour of being the last people to camp there last year! (And the only ones hardy enough to do so apart from another couple camping in the woods). In previous years, September has been very summery but alas, not this year – we definitely needed the campfire!
We were lucky to have the whole field to ourselves so we didn't have to worry about disturbing others with our songs and revelry around the campfire. It was wonderful and I am really grateful to Med and Laura for providing this beautiful place for people to gather, light a fire, and just be with each other.
The site has improved a lot since we first went there in 2008, there is now hot water and showers, and some beautifully fitted-out ridge and bell tents to hire.
My sister (who had not been camping since about 1979 when she was a Girl Guide!) stayed in one of these and was very impressed (pricey at £45 a night but worth it if you want to avoid the hard work that goes with camping).
The local area is beautiful and at Welsummer you can barely hear the motorway, always difficult to escape in Kent. The kids enjoyed playing on the grass, exploring the woods and watching the chickens.

We stayed for a week on this very attractive, homely campsite with lovely touches. A bit 'Nottinghill eco' for our tastes (organic sausages in plastic trays, electric fence which must have needed a small power station) but they were trying. Pitches were large and not too close together. Owners very friendly and welcoming.
Hot water was fired by a log burner but didn't ever run out while we were there. Toilets and showers are basic but clean and would have been perfectly adequate but for the number of people who monopolised the facilities showering / applying make up / curling eyelashes every morning! If you don't like children and do like extensive, sterile, plastic toileting facilities then this place is not for you, but you can leave it for the rest of us who think it's a gem!
Thoroughly recommend the 20 minute walk to the Pepper Box Inn!

We stayed here myself my husband and 5 children.
We found it to be a beautiful site, plenty of room on the pitches each with it's own firepit, facilities included toilets and shower which were standard, nothing too over rated but clean enough.
We were very welcome by the owners of the site who made sure we were booked in nice and smoothly.
I would recommend this site as it is one of the best we have been to, actually tried to get back there for last bank holiday but they were fully booked so must make sure I book in advance next time as we will definitely want to return.

I took my two girls for our first camping trip in August to this pleasant quiet site. It’s in a beautiful spot in the middle of lovely countryside with plenty of options for walks. It’s also well located for places to visit like Leeds Castle or National trust properties and there are lots of nice pubs around for meals out when you don’t feel like cooking.
It’s small and well appointed – we had one of the woodland pitches and it was great waking up to the sunlight filtering through the trees. The “shop” is tiny – really only useful for buying wood for the campfire or eggs and bacon. We didn’t try the hot drinks or food that I believe they also offer so can't comment.
Just a couple of minor criticisms – the sanitary facilities are, as previous reviewers have pointed out, pretty basic, but my research before we went had prepared me for this. Having now been, personally I would say they verge on the rustic. This wouldn’t have been so bad if they were kept a bit cleaner. I was surprised by other reviews saying how clean they were kept but certainly couldn’t agree based on our visit. I had to struggle to get my two girls (ages 15 and 10) to even use the toilets at first! The owner did say that his wife was away so I put it down to him perhaps struggling to maintain the place on his own while we were there. The other thing is that washing up greasy breakfast things in a bowl of freezing cold water wasn’t exactly a pleasant experience!
Overall though these are minor points and the good far outweighs the bad so I would recommend this site. Just be prepared for it to be a little more basic than you might be used too.

We arrived here late on Friday after work as a very last minute decision. I called to book in the morning but they were full and said they would call back if there were any no shows. They called me at 4pm and advised there would be space!
Cost 2 of us £42 which included late stay on Sunday. Lovely location, quite small and very laid back and hippylike. Found it very difficult to peg down tent as ground was very hard, however good pitch with fire ring.
Despite being in a small field with some big family groups, we had plenty of space. You cannot park next to your tent which at first is a pain but soon becomes less of a problem.
Toilet block is small and consists of 2 cubicles, a his and a hers and 2 showers! Owners very helpful and show you to your pitch and provide a fire pack consisting of matches, newspaper, kindling and logs for a fiver. Local produce is on sale and have to say eggs, bacon and sausages were amazing for breakfast.
Despite only being 10 miles from home we left this lovely campsite reluctantly on Sunday evening. Would definitely come back but need to book ahead!

We hired the Blue Bell Tent and it was gorgeous! beautifully equipped. Lovely campsite, the owners are very friendly and helpful. Their shop even sells ice packs, ice lollies and ice-creams. The toilets are very clean, there are vases with fresh flowers in the toilet and near the washing facilities. Our daughters had a great time walking in the forest and playing in the field. Highly recommended.

We spent a couple of nights here on our first family camping trip. We couldn't have chosen a better site-it was idyllic.
We had a really good sized pitch in very carefully managed woodland. The owners were very friendly, always around if you needed help. They had a useful and often lovely selection of item in the shop from local eggs and sausages to home made jams. Ice cream soda on a hot sunny day was a real surprise-yum.
The facilities are basic but kept very clean whatever the time of day.
The site has so much charm and character, you really feel like you're staying in someone's back garden. Wandering through the site at dusk with the campfires burning and the sound of children whooping in the woods whilst their families chatter was, to me, everything I hoped camping could be.
We are definitely going back, hopefully in time to catch the bluebells in the woods.

This was out first visit to Welsummer. The owners were very polite and helpful but there seems to be so many of these type of so called “Eco Friendly” places popping up now and charging over the odds as it’s become fashionable which I am afraid this place is.
The woodland pitches were a little bit too close to each other for our liking and not what I would call wild camping as you had a designated area and fire pit but it is a very peaceful place
The facilities were basic but they were clean and there was always hot water for a shower when we wanted one. I would recommend buying some of their fresh eggs as they were lovely. I understand why they didn’t want you to use the wood in the woodlands for the fires but £3.50 for a bag for large, damp logs wasn’t great.
All in all not a bad little campsite but I do feel that it was a little expensive for what it is, probably more suited for family camping.

We camped over the Bank Holiday period for three nights with friends and their children. We all loved the relaxed atmosphere and that it was a very child friendly site. Between us, we had four boys and they loved every minute exploring the woods and making new friends.
Yes, the facilities are basic but we always had a hot shower when we needed one. The owners work hard keeping the facilities clean during the day.
We never ventured out the site as we were happy sitting by the campfire at night and relaxing during the day. The boys played in the woods most of that day but there is a large field also just for children.

What a wonderful find Welsummer was.
I am almost tempted to keep it a secret but cant.
Instead I have just booked to go back this weekend with some friends even though its getting a little colder at night.
Everything is pleasantly laid back at Welsummer although help is always on hand if you need it (for example building a fire)
I really liked the fact that we were not interfered with.
It was a lovely warm weekend and the site still seemed calm and our pitch just private enough.
The toilet/shower block is basic as others have mentioned but you have everything you need and as well as the flowers I loved the shelf of books to peruse in there.
As with the casual chairs and table to relax at near the wash stand, these touches make the site really pretty and homely.
I was totally won over by the 'proper' coffee on sale in the morning and the bacon sandwiches which Mel went out of his way to deliver home grown basil leaves to, melted our hearts.
I lost my companion for a good half an hour, as she was learning all about the produce that Welsummer grows which was very impressive.
Local knowledge of where to eat/shop/find Internet access! was brilliant and the map provided to get us to a great pub, spot on.
I wish Welsummer was on my doorstep as I'd be there every weekend.
For me, it's camping as it should be.
