We have just spent 2 nights at this lovely little campsite just outside of Ashbourne.
The site itself is small with electric and non electric pitches situated in 2 separate fields. As we were non ehu we were situated in the 'pretty field' with it's stunning views over Dovedale.
Upon arrival we were given a friendly welcome by the site owners and told the pitches were informal and we could pitch where we wanted.
The grass pitches were large and fairly level with a gentle slope towards the far end of the field but this tended to be used by children playing and gave them space away from cars coming onto the site. The ground was well drained even after a night of torrential rain!
I did worry about booking a site with no play area with having an 11 and 7 year old in tow but I needn't have worried as they were quite happy catching bugs or playing ball.
The converted barn housed the toilet block which were kept immaculate by the owners (we saw the toilet block being cleaned 3 times the first day we were there) with plenty of toilets, sinks and showers although there were some queues first thing in the morning. We waited until the afternoon to shower and the water was still lovely and hot.
At the end of the toilet block were the washing up facilities which housed 2 sinks, a chest freezer and drinking water tap.
The site is well situated with Ashbourne, Alton Towers and Dovedale all within a few mins drive away. There is the local pub, The Dog and Partridge, just 10 mins walk away which has a decent play area for children although we found the bar prices quite expensive.
We have had a lovely weekend here and will definitely be returning to this site again in the near future

I spent two nights at Common End while visiting the Staffordshire Moors. This is a simple campsite with a fairly traditional feel and it seems quite well maintained.
The campsite offers online or telephone booking. When booking and when arriving, the owners were accommodating and friendly.
The rate is based on two people in one tent arriving in one car - it is £15 per night so Common End is not a particularly expensive campsite.
Access by road is easy for cars and looks straightforward for towed caravans too. The site is beside the A52 main road on the outskirts of Swinscoe village and is very easy to find - there is a large green sign on the roadside by the entrance. A surfaced track leads to Reception at the back of the farmhouse.
Despite being so near the A52, I heard very little traffic noise during my stay.
There are two spacious uncluttered fields, one of which is sub-divided. During my visit, the lower field had a mix of caravans, motorhomes and large family tents; there were smaller motorhomes and plenty of tents in the upper field. Cars can be parked beside pitches.
Incidentally, the upper field is named 'The Pretty Field' although it isn't noticeably prettier than the rest of the site. As far as I could see there were no EHU pitches in the Pretty Field.
A few areas of the site are level although there is a gentle slope in most places.
The soil is soft and takes pegs easily. The ground appears free-draining although there was some mud in the gateways. The grass is coarse and is not cut very short so expect a few humps and bumps.
Dogs are welcomed if kept on a lead and there is even a special dog-walking field. Dogs are charged for at £2 per night.
The site has its facilities in a stone barn. It was fairly quiet during my stay so I didn't have to queue. However, I think there may be insufficient loos and showers for the site at busy times: there were only two urinals, two toilet cubicles, and two showers in the gents.
During my stay the facilities were clean, there was hot water and the toilet rolls and paper towels were replenished regularly.
Beside the facilities barn is a separate pot-washing area under an awning with two sinks. There is a toilet disposal point across the yard.
As previous reviewers have pointed out, there is a pub in easy walking distance. I had a meal there but felt it was fairly expensive for very average pub grub. There are lots of shops in Ashbourne (including three supermarkets) a few minutes drive from the campsite.
In summary, this is a perfectly good, if rather characterless, simple campsite with basic facilities.

Picked for location as close to dovedale and area.
Two basic large fields with an added field for dogs as they are charged £1 per night so that was appreciated. The first field was full of large family tents so i went into the 'pretty field' which was just another large field, flat but very muddy going through the gate and quite exposed to winds.
The facilities were clean but inadequate for the number of people staying there. The showers were too hot with no way to add a bit of cold water, second time this has happened lately and you seldom get a bench any more although this had a plastic Stool. The sinks were tiny and tucked away in three separate corners. I didn't find a dog poo bin, in fact any sort of rubbish area was not noticeable. I think there were a couple of dustbins on the way out for recycling bits but the main dump seemed to be right outside the facilities, a rusting skip which said food waste only but I think everyone was just chucking anything in.
I didn't use the washing up facilities or see them as this was a flying visit but I did use the shower very early as I couldn't get near it the morning before. I think there were probably about 3 or 4 and same amount of loos.
I don't think it's a bad site, just not really memorable but the area certainly is.
Neither was I impressed with the local pub a short walk away the dog and partridge.

We have just returned from a lovely weekend at this site. It is only small, just 30 pitches, some with hook up. The tents/vans etc (and it was mainly tents) pitch around the edge of the field leaving a very large space in the middle, ideal for children to play and not annoy other campers. The field slopes gradually, but it is flat around the edges so there is no problem pitching. The grass pitches were spacious and free from stones. It is in a rural area and there are lovely views of the surrounding area. Although it is by the A52 we weren't aware of any noise from the road.
The showers and toilets are in a converted barn. It is kept spotless. They are the nicest we've seen. 2 showers, 3 toilets, and 3 wash basins for women and the same for men (plus 2 urinals). We felt this was ample for the size of the site. The water was plentiful and lovely and warm, ideal temperature for an adult. However, there was no temperature control and it was too hot to wash my 2 year olds hair. When you're camping you don't expect spotless kids and as we were only there for 2 days it really didn't matter. The 6 year old had no problem showering so only really a problem with young kids.
The washing up area was covered with 2 sinks and drainers. As some people have mentioned, the sinks were quite low, however, it certainly wouldn't put me off returning. The water was not as hot as in the showers and was cold at peak times.
There is also a notice board full of useful information about the surrounding area in this area and also a chest freezer for campers to use. Mops in the showers and cleaning equipment at the sink area mean they can be cleaned by campers after use.
The site is ideally located for visiting some popular parts of the Peak District - Dovedale, Ilam Hall and Ashbourne are all 5 minutes away by car. There is a good network of public footpaths but we didn't use these so can't comment further! The Dog and Partridge Pub is half a mile away. This does food and also has a great outdoor play area for kids.
There is no shop on site, but with Ashbourne so close it really isn't necessary. The lack of a playground meant that my kids spent their time on site playing football, cricket and trying to fly a kite. It was nice to see how happy they were amusing themselves.
We didn't see the site owners apart from on check in and when we had a query. They were exceptionally nice and friendly and left us to enjoy our break in peace. We were able to stay till mid afternoon on the day of departure for no extra cost as it was quiet.
We shall certainly be going back. If you want a simple campsite in a nice location, this is perfect.

Friendly welcome to the site.
We stopped here for one night as it's handy for crossing the country. Other sites in the area seem to advertise for Alton Tours and charge accordingly.
This is a basic, but honest, site. It's a large, mostly flat field behind a farm. There is no hard-standing, so things might get tricky in wet weather. EHU is provided around the edge of the field. No lighting on-site.
Toilet blocks are good. They're in nice old rustic barns, but the facilities inside are very fresh and clean.
It's in the middle of a rural area. The only thing you'll stroll to is the Dog & Partridge pub 1/2 mile away. Ashbourne is the nearest town, with plenty of opportunity for provisions, and it's a pretty town too.

Stayed for two nights in a tent. Welcoming and helpful owners.
We were pitched on the top field, while being further away from the shower/toilet block, has stunning views.
The shower/toilet block is clean, and free hot showers a bonus, but got very crowded as only 2 shower cubicles. Ground was fairly flat and well drained.
Other campers were a mixture of families and couples.
A good campsite at a reasonable price.

Stayed for one night in a tent. The welcome was pleasant and informative.
We were situated on the top field, while being further away from the shower/toilet block, has stunning views.
The shower/toilet block is clean, and free hot showers a bonus. Ground was fairly flat and coped well with the heavy rain.
Other campers were a mixture of families and couples.
There is a pub about 10 minutes walk away but didn't get a chance to go to it.
All in all, a good campsite at a great price.

Just got back from a 2 nighter on this site & felt compelled to write a review right away.
The site itself is easy to find & is in a really good position for exploring Dovedale & the surrounding area.
The field was freshly mown & although it has many slopes is pretty flat around the perimeter - we had no problems finding a flat spot for our rig.
Major plus for us is decent sanitation & I am pleased to say the shower/toilet block & the covered utility area were superb, do take care on the tiled floor though as it does get slippery under bare feet.
Power hook ups are available although limited & as you would expect are closer to the facilities.
Don't go expecting swimming pool, bar, playroom, etc. Be prepared to make your own entertainment as the field size allows a large play area in the centre - there were a number of kids here including ours but no evidence on our visit of excess noise (there are notes in the site rules relating to noise pollution & how it would be dealt with).
The Dog & Partridge is well within walking distance & also well worth calling in on is the Cock at Clifton (5 minute drive)- a well stocked cellar & probably on of the best Steak & Ale pies I have ever eaten!
We'll be back for sure next time we're out that way.

Arrived and allocated pitch was just mud, we chose the pitch next door with no problems from the owners - but it would have been nicer if they had known the conditions of the pitches before allocation. Field is relatively flat and pitch spaces are quite large.
Toilets and (2) showers were kept clean, but short wait for showers - and the site was not really busy either, so could be a problem in busy times. We had horrendous rain and the site turned into a quagmire - so much so we took the corsa home and swapped it for the 4x4 jimney (hoping we could fit it all in on the way home!) we did get stuck in the mud twice with the corsa. Noise from the road all night was not overbearing but did take away the feeling of being in the countryside. Good base for walking.
Did go to the local pub and found it very expensive for average food - also states at the wash station there is a discount for campers at this site - none for us. Overall not a bad site, would probably try somewhere else in the area next time though.
