We spent a fantastic Whitsun week at Hele Valley. In fact we are still here! (So good reception on my Vodaphone Dongle!). The weather has been kind but there was one wet and stormy night. Regardless of weather this is a great site.

The facilities are some of the best we have seen anywhere. The pitches are spacious and well cared for and the electricity works as it should! Of special mention are the showers toilets and pot washing facilities. They are spotlessly clean and well maintained - why don't all sites have facilities like these?

We were very impressed with the staff. Very helpful on the phone when we booked and a warm friendly greeting when we arrived. Just right!

The are is ideal for a family holiday. Local beach and area good for early morning walks. Nice pubs, garage, restaurant and a tea room with in close walking distance. A walk into Ilfracombe is only about 15 minutes.

The wider are has plenty to offer. We certainly haven't exhausted the possibilities yet!

So all in all we give this site 10/10. We can't think of anything to improve it. We will definitely be back next year.

Toilet blocks are very clean and appear to be cleaned twice a day. Four showers in male block and four in female. Showers are free and hot.

Location of the site is spot on if you are planning to do any walking on the north coast of Devon. Great access to South West Coastal Path and walking distance into Ilfracombe. Driving distance to other areas of North coast of Devon. Great Location. Loads of things to do including for kids, both on and off the site.

Walking distance to beaches which also take dogs!

Two pubs within walking distance, one of which is happy to take dogs and serves food.

Shop on site selling all the basics you need.

Ground very boggy. Tent sunk into the ground. Would not advise camping here in winter/wet weather, in a tent, unless weather is really good. Staff at site really tried to help by placing straw down over the mud however did not really work. Pitch not really suitable for its purpose and spoilt our holiday so much so we had to leave early. We were not given a refund for the days we missed.

Expensive site. You are paying for location and a fantastic toilet block.

Toilet blocks closed for several hours in the middle of the day while it is cleaned. Bit inconvenient if you need a shower in the afternoon.

The site staff were particularly friendly from the start of our 3 night stay at this lovely site. We were given plenty of information regarding the site and the surrounding areas. We were given plenty of choice for pitch location. The site was fairly quiet but it may be a little cramped if full. A £2.50 deposit for each key for the shower/ toilet block was refundable, this was a little inconvenient and may cause problems if you have kids. The showers were clean and well equipped, the only slight annoyance were that the mirrors in the wash cubicles were a little low.

The site is quite long and so it could be a little tiresome trekking to them, especially if you had to make sure you had your key first!

The pitches were a little boggy, due to the heavy rain fall and being a flat site next to a river, but this didn't cause too much of a problem.

The on site shop had only a few items, but the staff happily directed you to the mini mart down the road 5mins away.

There were no on site eating facilities but there were 2 pubs a 5 min walk away and a cafe on the beach, 10 mins walk away. Hele Billys served very good food with a friendly service, at reasonable prices. The hele bay pub served enormous plates of good food.

The site was 5 mins from the nearest bus stop into Ilfracombe and towards Combe martin, which was very convenient.

We enjoyed our stay very much and would happily return.

Peaceful site on the edge of Ilfracombe and with easy access to the coast path. Very helpful and informative staff. Access to Ilfracombe on foot via main road (pavement all the way) approx 20 mins or via coast path which is longer and tougher but with wonderful views!
Pubs within a few minutes walk of the site with good menus but not sampled.
Facilities on site excellent and well maintained. Recycling actively encouraged. Gravel motorhome pitch occupied with electric hook-up but unable to obtain a level even with risers due to the nature of the surface.
Hopefully the site's attentiveness to comments will rectify this problem for future visitors. Stayed 3 nights - would happily return for a stay if visiting the area again.

Have just returned from this site after spending three nights there over the bank holiday weekend. Check in was painless, We were given site and local information. We were also given his and her keys to the shower block, deposit of £3.50 per key asked for.We were shown to our pitch which was clearly marked. The shower block was spotless and the idea to leave j - cloths in each cubicle to wipe the sinks after use a very good idea. At busy times in the morning and early evenings you were met with a queue for both the showers and the wash rooms. If you got the timing right the showers were brilliant. Hot water galore! As you would expect over a bank holiday weekend this site was very busy and could be noisy at times but overall we could not fault it. The staff were very friendly and helpful and in attendance. There is a children's play area and a nature trail further up the site. The site is close to Ilfracombe and Hele Bay offers a Coastal Walk which is worth doing for the views. I would certainly recommend this site.

First impressions upon arrival were good. Friendly reception staff ditto previous reviews.

Pitch used number 44 12m elhu (smelly). Pitch 12m wide but not very deep, looking at other pitches and the general layout of the site space has been made maximum use of (not much room). Weather had been very inclement before and during our stay and a lot of the grass areas were waterlogged (the sites by the stream were closed off due to waterlogging). Showers and toilet block were kept very clean but agree with previous reviews re lack of hot water. Toilet block closed 11:30 - 14:00 for cleaning.

Site expensive for what is on offer 5 adults,1 dog 12m elhu £50.00/night.

Stayed at Hele Valley for four nights with friends. Girl in reception very polite and helpful. Told us that if there were any problems with noise etc to phone them at anytime and they would come and deal with it. So a good start!

Tidy semi-rural site with a stream running beside it. However, the stream is private property and therefore children from the camp are not allowed to play in it. On our first morning I went for a shower at 10.30am - had to wait for a cubicle and then found that the water was absolutely FREEZING! Was speaking to another camper who told me that she had complained at Reception about the cold showers and was just told to avoid peak times. There is also a notice to this effect on the shower block door. However, the next morning I rose early and had a shower at 7.30 - started off tepid then turned cold. Hubby was in men's block at the same time and same happened to him. The next morning was just as cold. Difficult sometimes to avoid peak times when you go out for the day - hot showers should be available all day. I have rheumatoid arthritis and need a hot shower to help with the pain and stiffness in the mornings so the cold showers weren't a great start to my day!

The site wasn't full - perhaps due to the bad weather - but there were some large groups of friends there with children who were very noisy running around the site. Probably to be expected in August but as our friend is a teacher we had no choice but to go away at this time. Gravel driveways proved to be noisy especially when campers arrived back on site late at night!

Lots of bins available for rubbish and the site does encourage recycling. A big plus! As we don't have young children I can't comment on the playground. Very close to pubs and the coastal path and only a mile from Ilfracombe. We enjoyed two evening meals at Hele Billy's, about 10 mins away. Excellent meals at very reasonable cost.

We had booked a trip to Lundy Island, sailing from Ilfracombe, but this was cancelled due to bad weather. Site very convenient for any sea trips from Ilfracombe.

Did suggest to the owners that perhaps they could have a separate area for couples as our friends in their tent did have problems with sleeping because of noise. Probably won't return, due mainly to the lack of a hot shower(!) but overall not a bad site for families.

Just got back from this campsite and felt I should write my bit.

After past bad experiences of noisey neighbours my girlfriend and I was worried bout noisey campers. We had 6 nights at this campsite and it was perfect! very quiet!

The facilities where very clean and the showers where very good with proper sliding doors. The only thing I can grumble about is hot water when showering! we where having one at night bout 6.30ish. Any later and they where very cold! lol. But apart from that it was an excellent site.

The reception sold the basics bread milk etc, internet facilities, ice pack freezing service.

The playground looked very good.

I'd recommend this site and would defo go again.

We have just got back for Hele Valley so thought I would add my review.

We stayed here for 3 nights (minimum no of nights allowed apparently!) and had no problems with noise at all considering we went over the weekend and there was a fab Birdman event going on in the Main Town of Ilfracombe.

The site felt very peaceful and was exceptionally clean and the showers were the cleanest I have ever visited (avoid between 7-9am though as they are cold!) Also the turning to get in could need a couple of shunts in a large motorhome as it is a sharp narrow turning.

Basics sold in camp shop but costcutters in Hele sells pretty much everything.

Hele Beach (shingle) is nearby and good for exploring and if you are energetic enough walk up the coastal cliff path to Ilfracombe (not pushchair friendly) the view is well worth it.

The play area has just been updated and my 8 year old had no problems spending hours there !

We only had one real gripe and that was that the stream shown on their website was private land and not allowed in I had visions of us all messing around in there with a net felt a bit missold to about that as whats the point of showing it if you cant get near it !

Very clean and peaceful site -Enjoy

Just back from a weekend visit. Some of the comments below seem a little out-dated so hopefully these will help balance it out.

The site was easy to find and signposted clearly, and we had a warm reception with lots of info on the site and also the surrounding area plus tips on where to go, where to park etc. Very helpful for first-timers to the area.
The site was very clean and we saw a number of wardens/staff over the weekend emptying bins, picking up litter (not that there was a lot), checking the pitches. We were told that several wardens live on the site and were given 3 numbers to call if we had any problems, anytime. We didn't have, but were told the site operated a zero tolerance policy to noise after hours.

The pitches were all level and clearly marked out, with an option of 8m or 12m pitches with or without EHU. The only issue we had was the gravel path outside the tents was rather annoying when trying to get our toddler off to sleep.
We had a key to the family / disabled room which was perhaps not the best idea with a toddler - the shower attachment did not fix to the wall, so it was put it down and spray the room while catching toddler or shower myself and leave her dry.She didn't get showered the whole weekend! I did sneak a look at the womens facilities and was very impressed by the look of them - clean, bright with sliding doors to the shower bit and space outside for clothes / drying plus individual cubicles with sinks if you like a little privacy in the mornings. I'd go for these next time! We didn't find the key a problem and in fact it was quite reassuring to know you can't get in without one when you're on the 6am toddler trip.

The playground was a disapointment in my opinion, though little one was happy enough. The under 5s area had 2 'baby' swings but the seats were so high off the ground I couldn't lift my almost three year old into them! She loved the 5-14 playground, but this was open at one end and she ran out. Given that it opened to the road through the site, and there was a stream running alongside the camp, I feel this needs to be addressed. Some more child friendly equipment would be good for the littlies (swings, slide, seesaw, trampoline).

Dogs are welcome on the site and there were plenty of doggy bins with bags provided. I think there was a dog walk, but not having a dog we didn't check this out!

THe site has a small selection of things on sale in reception, which were fairly reasonable, but the village has a Costcutter shop at the petrol station for pretty much all your needs, or there is a new Tesco the other side of Ilfracombe we were told. Hele village has 3 pubs - the big one was closed during our stay but Hele Billies did a good range of food and drink (recommend booking as was quite busy Friday night) and a bit further afield but still walkable the Thatch ?? was also very pleasant with a nice area to sit outside. They also did food, but we didn't try.

The beach at Hele was a bit shingly for our tastes but good for walking the dog or picking up pebbles. A better bet would be Woolacombe or Croyde further down the coast.

All in all, a good site, which we would happily visit again for a long weekend. Be warned - their policy is 3-night bookings only. They did take our 2-night booking but we paid an extra pound for the pitch per night. I thought this was a bit cheeky given that they were nowhere near full and it wasn't high season. However, when we left we were given a £1 off a night voucher for future 3 night stays so I guess we'll recoup if we return. Still.
