We've just returned from a week at Hele Valley (7th-14th July). There were only 4 tents on the site including ours; probably because the weather forecast rain all week - fortunately we only had 1 day of it. Therefore it was extremely quiet (apart from the sound of the stream which runs right alongside the pitches). Good if you don't like being woken up by noisy kids. Being in a valley the site was very sheltered - so no gusty winds! The site is mainly geared towards mobile homes. Our main gripes were: 1. Key for shower/toilet block - very frustrating when you're bursting for the loo and you have to fish around in your pockets to find the key! 2. On our last night, a marquee was erected not far from our pitch for a party. This meant loud music till 12.30 and 'strangers' arriving onsite making us feel vulnerable. When we mentioned this to the reception staff they did not make any apologies. The toilet/shower block was very clean, showers hot. A few gripes: mirrors too small and low, no electric points for own hairdryer/straighteners and no 'shelf' in the toilet cubicles just hooks. We would recommend eating at Hele Billy's as we found the food and atmosphere better than Hele Bay Hotel. There were even games to play in wet weather. The walk up the hill into Ilfracombe is a bit hard going. We found the town to be a bit run-down; lots of closed down shops and in need of investment - could do with a few nice restaurants and pubs. But this could be due to us being spoilt by St Ives in Cornwall from previous years. We would recommend the site but would not return to North Devon again.

Stayed here for a weekend in late summer. Very pleasant site but the camping field we were in was right next to the children's play area so was rather noisy from first thing in the morning until well into the evening. Also, a large group of friends arrived on our second night & sat up talking in LOUD voices until the early hours but we were unable to find the owners to ask them to get these people to quieten down. The toilets and showers are lovely and modern, very clean and perfectly adequate. It was a short stroll to the beach and local pubs. The site is in a perfect location for exploring North Devon. Would stay there again.

September 2005 Stayed at this site for one night while traveling around Cornwall and north Devon. Nice site, we were out of season so it was £11 for two people and one tent but at £14 a night in the high season it is a bit expensive. As we were out of season it was quiet and we had the whole camping field and the toilets and showers to ourselves. The toilets and showers are lovely and modern with private basin rooms. However there are only four showers so I emagine it gets very busy in the high season. There is also a notice up saying the hot water may run out a peak times so can you try to use the showers at none peak times, which is a bit stupid because most people need to use them in the morning. I didnt have this problem though as I had the whole block to myself! You have to put a deposit down for the keys to the toliets/showers. The camping field we were in is right next to the childrens play area which is probably very noisy and anoying in the high season (unless your a kid!) but was fairly quiet while we were there. Its a bit far to walk into Ilfracombe but isnt far to drive and I love Ilfracombe so it was a handy site. Its is also within walking distance of shops and pubs.

July 2005 Very impressed with this site. Toilet block was best we've seen in along time. (This is very important to us women!) New, modern and freshly done, only down side was sorry excuse for a hairdryer. Quiet, tidy site. will return again. Was within walking distance of well stocked shop.

July 2004 Very nice park - although the pitches with electric are very small and close to the road through the site making parking a little difficult if you have a large tent / awning.
The shower block was always clean and plenty of hot water however, the down side was that the water was too hot for small children so we had to wash the kids down with a bowl of water every day which was a bit inconvenient. I particularly liked the individual wash cubicles as I don't like cleaning my teeth in public and they offer a nice bit of privacy!
The staff at reception were really friendly and helpful.

After a disasterous journey we were warmly welcomed by the site staff who were most helpful. We were able to choose our own pitch with hook-up (limited choice as it was August!) however the electric pitches were very cramped together right on top of the through road which was a bit of a worry with 3 pre-school children, but speed bumps ensured cars were not moving fast. After pitching the tent we went out and when we came back we were unable to park the car next to the tent as the next pitch had been occupied and we were very cramped. The pitches ideally need to be better defined and a few foot bigger. The non-hookup pitches however were also very flat and even which is essential for a good nights sleep!
The toilet / shower blocks are locked and you need to put a deposit down for each key but this made us feel a little more secure in the middle of the night. The facilities were pretty good and the private wash cubicles were a perfect touch however the showers needed some attention as they regularly got stuck "on" or flooded the block. The water in the showers was scalding - too hot for me to enjoy more than a quick wash and definitely too hot for small children and babies. Despite the presumably temporary blip in the shower block the site was very relaxed and friendly with excellent play areas for under 5's and older children.
We will definitely be going back!

July 03 The site was very busy and cramped and the facilities definitely could not cope with the amount of people. The new shower block caused chaos due to lack of hot water, facilities not working properly and the building not being finished. Play area was OK but campers were made to feel like the poor relations and the play area was well away from the caravans and right by the campers which caused noise at times. Other campers were friendly and helpful but would not recommend a stay until you were sure the facilities could cope with having you.

August 2003 (Bank Holiday) When we arrived we were greeted by very friendly staff. Was very busy but found our stay to be very comfortable. Kids loved the play area and was at ease letting them roam the site because it was so safe. Just a few minutes stroll from the beach, which we all loved. Locals were also friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Pubs very child friendly. Would recommend site to all our friends and have already booked to visit again next year.

Late August Don’t pitch your tent by the stream in the first field on the right or you will get flooded out if it rains hard, it is only a small gradient but the water doesn’t drain away fast enough because of the stream below.
The toilet/shower block & washing facilities were very clean but the shower buttons got a bit ridiculous because the few seconds that they stayed on were nowhere near long enough, the 2 dish washing sinks with drainers got very busy during peak times and a queue formed.

aug2003 The shower block & washing facilities are nowhere near large enouugh to cope with the amountof peaople the site can hold,we stayed for two nights and the showers were either cold or the water supply had failed completely for 80% per cent of the time.
