Please note we have been advised that this campsite has closed, and no longer offers camping, motorhome or caravanning pitches, although the pub itself is currently still open. If you know that this situation has changed in the future, please could you let us know. Many thanks

The pub and campsite was sold in March 2017 and the new owner has closed the campsite permanently to use it as a horse paddock. Sad news all round. Maybe he will change his mind when the regular hoardes of campers just turn up en masse without booking like they have always done!

We booked through the website even though there are actually no pictures of the campsite on there. We got met by a very efficient looking woman with a clip board and she told us exactly where to park next to a battered old unused toilet block with loads of industrial hessian rubbish bags in front of it

She continued to tell us about taking over the running of the campsite as in her words 'it had lost it's way a bit' she told us about the new 'toilet/shower block' which is a grey porta cabin with only 1 shower for males 1 shower for females baring in mind they have 30 pitches, inside the block there are no seats/ shelves/ hooks/ shaving points, so everything has to be put on the floor. To get in you have to have a secret code even though everybody leaves the doors open and the gents door won't close properly anyway. Outside there is an uncovered old sink with only cold water to do your washing.

During our stay the lady in charge shouted at my wife because our dog was not on a lead, even though our dog was just sitting down next to our campervan not doing anything.

For the rest of the stay we seen various dogs running around the field with no lead even the cooks dog from the pub next door kept running around the campsite.

I went to use the toilet at 4am and there was still music coming from a group further down the campsite even though there is a 11pm curfew on music.

This site was chosen for a group meeting, some staying in tents, some in campervans and some on a barge. The field is next to the canal, behind the pub and approached via a woodyard. You get a field, a portaloo toilet and shower block and a cold water tap for washing up. All this for £8. 50 per adult? The pub has a good range of beers, the food was OK and live music provided on Saturdays. It's noisy and busy. Just what we wanted. We sat around a fire pit until the small hours, talking, drinking, singing, playing music and no one complained.

Don't come here expecting peace and quiet. Ideal for what we wanted but perhaps overpriced for the facilities on offer.

Set behind the pub in a field which can get a bit muddy during heavy rain, but we had no problems getting in and out. The pub is friendly and has a garden by the canalside. Great local beers/ciders available as well as food. No CDP on site but apparently there is one at the local boatyard. Fresh water available, but no electric. Good walks up the canal, very pretty area of the country. WiFi in the pub. Dog Friendly pub/site. Price is £7. 50 per adult, no charge for children/pets.

This is a great place to stay with and without the kids, a very laid back 'hippy' type atmosphere where everyone just gets on. Music in the pub on Saturday nights from local bands. Good choice of local ales and food. A sawmill close by who will deliver off cuts of wood for your fire pit. A very electric place that's always buzzing.

****March 2016, Rumours are abound locally that this is going to turn into some middle class camp site! No tents allowed, only camper vans with own toilet facilities and the only tents on site are bell tents that have to be hired.

I'm afraid if this is the case this hidden gem of a site will lose all its character and a lot of trade, one can only hope this isn't the case.

Another fabulous night at The Barge - we travelled down from Birmingham just for one night at this hidden gem. It's basic but such a happy place - I think it's £7 per person, you get what you pay for!

Everything was fabulous as ever. There is now hot water at the washing up point - hurrah!

The loo block could do with a bit of maintenance - as seasoned campers we generally bring along everything we need (such as loo roll), but it would be nice if this was replenished more often - same for hand towels.

Thanks again folks, stay awesome!

We stopped for lunch and had planned to eat in our campervan that evening (the pub has a great little campsite attached) but the food was really too good and the landlord so welcoming and enthusiastic about his locally sourced food that we decided to eat there in the evening too. We weren't disappointed. High quality dishes at a fraction of the price we are used to paying. The pub has a wonderful old world lived in feel, with wood burner in the corner, a live band and bunch of interesting and eccentric locals made for a great evening. We tottered back to the camper full of wonderful food and local ales and cider to sleep like babes in the wood. The pub is on the canal and the views across the countryside to the white horse carved into the hillside are worth the trip alone.

This is quite simply our favourite place in the world. Quirky and picturesque, a perfect child and dog friendly place to get away from the hustle and bustle. It has just changed hands again so please go and show your support!

I do have a couple of quibbles - could do with hot water at the washing up point (I hate carting around dirty dishes & pans), and the shower in the ladies is simply awful - goes from freezing to scalding then back again, so you can only use it for the few seconds that it's at a bearable temperature, then wait for it to come round again - takes ages! Also a bit pricey - cost us £17 for the night, (and that's without EHU!). We went somewhere the next day that had a pool, shop, launderette and showers that worked, and EHU, and it was £18 a night! Charging by the person is pretty daft, if they start charging a reasonable rate for what they are offering it would be perfect.

Went to this site as a last minute camping trip - wanted to go somewhere near a pub in case it got cold! We had been warned by the owner that it was very very muddy and it certainly was. If we had been able to book it would have been easier - as it was everybody was piled on there with not much room in between.

Pros

Very beautiful surrounding countryside, peaceful site once everyone has gone to bed, however this can be 4am ! lovely pub at site, very nice landlord and landlord, no 'rules' if that is what you like. Great bands in pub, very child friendly in that it is enclosed and kids can run free a bit, laid back 'festival' type feel

Cons

Scruffy camping field (certainly when we were there), grubby and limited showers/toilets, toilet paper not always kept refilled etc. Dog owners just let their dogs do their 'doo' and nobody seems to bother clearing it up, empty beer bottles hanging around the field, if you like quiet, don't go as its full of young groups and can be noisy at night The noise wasn't a huge problem as we had a few drinks although the effing and jeffing that went along with too much alcohol during the night was not good. No hot water at washing up sink - have brought my dirty pots home to clean.

The landlady told me they had been struggling with staff so things were a bit chaotic.

This site was not really for us and we won't visit again however I have tried to write a fair and objective review.
