We stumbled upon this campsite by pure chance and we love it! We are a pot noodle family with 6 children. Sometimes we bring ALL of them, sometimes just some of them and recently we just came on our own! This campsite is 'lovely'. The atmosphere is totally relaxed, the staff are all so different and there are so many characters! The pub is gorgeous! Its got a real olde worldy feel. Full of Knick knacks and character! You can relax and play board games or pool or have a gorgeous meal and watch the world go by. There are so many pictures & photos to look at on the walls you could be lost in there for hours and the beer & cider is great! The staff are all friendly and welcoming and you are free to come & go from the campsite as you please.

We took a four mile walk up to the famous White Chalk Horse ( watch out for the cows!) the other day. We called in at a gorgeous little café ( its just over the bridge before the entrance to the camp )for an amazing full English the next morning.

The campsite ALWAYS has room for everybody, they have lush hot showers, fresh water, washing up facilities & you can buy firewood off the lovely warden at the entrance to the camp x You even get a daily visit from the milkman!

Its hard to describe this place without giving it the justice it deserves. If you can close your eyes and picture a canal with a full array of narrowboats then a row of trees, a slope and a huge field. All sat behind a magnificent building where music from folk bands plays out and you can set up camp of any sort or size. Smell bacon & eggs cooking in the mornings, hear distant guitars strumming, the odd whistle being played and an occasional jungle drum beat. Surrounded by laughter from adults and children. Its almost like a mini festival every time we come here!

If you like the Glastonbury/V festival atmosphere ( just the atmosphere. Not the scale!), you like colourful characters and a totally laid back atmosphere then this is the place for you. I cant credit it enough. I'm only just home and I am already having withdrawal symptoms! x

We came for a night on our return from Cornwall and this is a fab campsite. We were met by the warden who took our £15 for a tent with two adults, warned us it is a noisy site and left us to it.

The toilet and shower facilities were in a portable cabin and were kept clean and stocked up. The shower was warm, more than suitable and very refreshing after 6. 5 hours in the car driving.

Everyone we met were friendly and would stop for a natter and drink. Some cool characters here, reminds me of a hippy camp.

We went to the pub to sample the food and drinks, and they offered plenty of choices of real ales, lagers, etc. The food was fantastic, I had a steak, mushroom and ale pie and for a tenner, it was one of the best meals I have had in a long time. The fish and chips also looked and tasted stunning.

The site is on a canal and lots of barges stop for the night and help make the ambience really cool.

The village is nearby offering the usual shops for your essentials. Also this is slap in the middle of Wiltshire, so all the usual tourist attractions are easily accessible.

A great site, a great one night stopover and one I would come back to.

I had heard that the pub had closed down so was delighted to find it had NOT! It is no longer a community pub but has a new landlady who I found delightful. She was very helpful and took the time to sit down and chat with us for quite a while which made us feel very welcome there. Still the same facilities, and many of the same types of very colourful and friendly people there, but also many families who seemed to be pitched on the extra field area. The children were all very happy there, with plenty of room to play games, and best of all a Saturday night disco! This was for adults but such a lovely crowd attending, children were quite safe there. There was also a live group playing in the pub so almost had a music festival atmosphere, great for young people! (And we oldies!)

The menu had changed, but the food was still great and about half the price I would pay in London pub.

For atmosphere and fun this site is a MUST!

Stayed here 3 nights at the weekend. We were a little apprehensive after reading previous reviews and prepared ourselves for noise. We have a newish van and most punters were in home van, bus, lorry conversions with woodburners etc.

We had a great time, The Barge Inn site doesn't pretend to be anything else than what it is. Their was noise, there were free running dogs, we have one too, yes the toilet and showers are a dodgy portable cabin, but cleaned each morning we were there. It's only the punters that dirty them up.

Food in pub was good, excellent ales and cider, friendly staff, band on Sat night. Fellow campers were friendly and characterful as were the boaties and pub locals. We will visit again even though at £7. 50 each per night with no hookup, it is pricey, but full of character. We loved it and the canal walk is great.

We recently spent the first 3 nights of our honeymoon here, having had our second date here a couple of years back, and we will keep returning. This is a proper campsite! We love the atmosphere and the colourful characters who hang around, some other reviewers' descriptions of these guys amount to little more than snobbery.

The boaties are always friendly and up for a jam into the wee hours, and we had visits from no less than 3 children during the day with various stories to tell - the reviewers saying this is not a child-friendly place obviously have a very strange and sterile view of what children actually need!

The toilets are fit for purpose and the sinks have running water - what more do you want. There does seem to be a problem with the showers where they switch between freezing and scalding without warning (but they are free), so bring some wet wipes if you're bothered about being clean. We're not. Dogs run free and get proper exercise while you chill out, unlike a lot of places where you have to faff around with leads and take the dog off site for a run. Gorgeous walks along the canal, food in pub too expensive so bring some beans, but 10/10 for character. Could use a couple of electrical hook ups.

The main draw at this site has to be the canal and pub. There are pleasant walks along the towpath and the pub, which the campsite is attached to, has a range of real ales and serves really good food, not just the usual pub grub. We paid £15 a night for a two-man tent.

The site itself is on level ground, though the grass was really long when we were there. You are next to the canal and I got bitten quite badly by midges or mossies. The other downside to the canal is the new-age boater collective who are moored up by the site and play techno late into the night. There are also a large amount of dog deposits along the towpath.

The site has water and portable cabins with male and female toilets and showers. They differed in cleanliness according to time of day. The showers are free and hot though not immaculately clean. I couldn't use the toilet on one morning because other campers had left it in such a disgusting state that it turned my stomach.

I think that there is an electric hookup or two available and there was plenty of room on the site when we were there. Despite this, some guys camped really close to us, it was apparent that they were using it as a base to use the nearby airfield for paragliding or something, and we were woken up at 6am by their liberal use of the 'f' word.

The other campers, including lots of European nationalities and American seemed to be there for 'spiritual' reasons: Avebury, Stonehenge, crop circles etc.

Because of the type of people the site attracts its not a site I'd take kids to. I overheard a guy saying it was the 'scummiest' campsite he'd ever been to. I wouldn't go that far, but it does have a festival feel to it.

We have been coming here for about four years and were worried that the pub may have lost its wonderful character with the transition to a community pub. Hats off to the hard working committee who have managed to make it even better!

OK, the campsite is still basic but with a vastly improved shower unit as they have demolished the old barn. It still attracts the extremely friendly characters who have a great sense of fun and are always happy to include you in their conversations. I find myself laughing a lot when I go here!

The pub is now amazing! Fabulous bar staff who make you feel that you are a 'regular' the minute you walk in and oh, the food! I did watch the recent TV programme on the pub and was wondering if the standards were as good as they made out! Even better, the head of house was absolutely charming, and the meal I had was the best one I have eaten for years and about half the price I would pay in London. You could tell this was fresh local produce cooked by a talented chef.

And to cap it all, you have the company of the narrow boaters who reside by the pub, a diverse crowd who without exception are welcoming and entertaining.

I now call this site and pub 'my local' even if I have to drive 90 miles to reach it!

We went to this site for one night, just so we could take the kids on a bike ride along the canal and enjoy the scenery. It was one night too long.

Firstly the 'rules' of the campsite, notably these.

6. All dogs to be kept on a lead on site and please clean up after them.

11. Any person causing excessive noise, damage or hindrance to others will be asked to leave.

12. All music or other noise should be kept to a minimum and in any case stopped at 11pm.

.Are laughable. When we were cooking some rogue dog wandered in had a sniff about and then peed behind our tent.

There was a thunderstorm the night that we were there and even great rumbling thunder didn't mask the sound of our collection of twenty-something neighbours' music blaring away until about 3am.

The toilets were terrible, with no loo roll and completely insufficient for the number of people on the site and I don't think I would have tried the shower if you paid me.

I wouldn't recommend this site to people with children for all the above reasons. Young children can get onto the bank of the canal with ease. There were too many undesirables lurking about and we felt that the facilities were so nasty that we insisted that the children brush their teeth with bottled water in the tent.

Further more, despite there being a huge, empty field behind us, a group of lads decided to play football three inches away from our tent which at one point involved the ball flying over the windbreak and crashing onto our table. We told them to go away, which they did for five minutes, after which they came back and repeated the process.

After what can only be described as an almost totally sleepless night, when we finally did nod off, two lovely gentlemen were having a disagreement outside our tent, the body of which involved the F word being used in new and colourful ways.

The plus points, which I have to say, were completely ruined by the downsides, are.

1) The pub

2) The canal

If you like going to festivals, and don't mind excessive noise and dodgy loos then you will love the relaxed nature of this site. If you want to get any sleep, don't come here.

Another return trip to this site and we were there for the last night of the current landlord and landlady, who have hung up the keys and retired. There was a large celebration and a marquee was put up with live music and all round great atmosphere.

The facilities were still of the usual standard, not that clean but perfectly functionable and you are able to do your business no problems.

The usual range of beers, wines and spirits are available in the pub and reasonable prices too and a good variety of food on the menus, at good prices.

On the canal, so walking is in abundance.

This is a very relaxed site and there were small campfires going, people sitting up and chatting late into the night, but that is soothing listening to people enjoying themselves.

If you want total peace and top notch facilities, then this is not the place for you. If you want relaxed camping, chilling out and roughing it a bit, then this is perfect

The new ownership, as far as we could tell, is a local community project who will be trying to keep the ethos the same and keeping the character of the pub and campsite.

I will be back next spring to see how they are getting on.

Oh close to all the attractions that Wiltshire has to offer and this site loves the Crop Circle.

We chose this site for it's location and went with an open mind.At £5 for the night, per person,I felt it offered good value.

The toilet block and shower was somewhat basic, so best avoided by anyone who has never been to a festival!

The pub had great beer and cider. I liked the colourful characters who were into the crop circles nearby.

The site itself was packed out. There was a festival atmosphere, which meant the noise continued throughout the night.

We had impro guitar and drum sessions with other campers, which added to the fun.

This site works best for night owl people who love real ale and cider. Children are not best placed here.

We went walking locally and viewed the crop circles.I was impressed at the sight.

There was a lot of other places to explore, but there was a limit in a 2 day period.

In summary, a great place for musicians, mystics and ale lovers. But if you are a light sleeper, bring your ear plugs.
