We’re fresh back from a week here and are torn between spreading the word or keeping Chateau de Monfreville as a smug secret to ourselves so it doesn’t become booked up forever more. Paul and Zoe have created a campsite that’s so bang on, we just wish we’d come up with it first. Fresh croissants and pain au chocolate delivered to your tent before you’re even up in the morning (the Croissant Fairy does exist) felt like a real luxury. A hot tub to glam it up in, waterlily pond for the kids to mess around in for hours, campfires at night (hell, you can even see the Milky Way), beautiful well kept grounds, even an honesty shop for must-have marshmallows.
There’s no cars on the camping field so it’s absolute tranquillity and safe for kids to roam and enjoy, and Paul and Little Grey his tractor transporting everything down to your pitch for you makes for an easy arrival and departure. Even their kids made perfect playmates for our two – we didn’t expect to get to join in birthday celebrations. Washing-up and bathroom facilities always clean and never overrun, as they’re smart in only having the 12 pitches on the go at any one time.
It’s ½ hour from the D-Day beaches so an ideal spot to be based at. If it’s quiet and rural you’re after, this is your spot. Having been more used to your typical French site complete with waterparks and fun clubs, this felt like a punt when we set out from the UK and we honestly didn’t think it could live up to expectations. It exceeded them by far and we will definitely be back for more. In the words of Cheryl Cole, they’ve nailed it.

We stayed at this fantastic campsite for 3 days in June at the start of our 3 month trip. The site was outstanding, we received a warm and friendly greeting on arrival from Paul, and a little later Zoey who gave us a fresh baguette. Paul assisted us with his tractor and trailer in taking our gear onto the campsite (No cars allowed on the actual campsite) which has a maximum of 12 pitches. The view is lovely across farm fields.
The facilities were great and included a shared fridge which dispensed ice and cool water, there were barbeques available and an undercover eating area for if needed. Plus the feature item in our books, an outdoor hot tub with brilliant views across the surrounding farmlands.
The daily morning delivery of bread/pastries/croissants was a lovely option and we got pain au chocolates which we enjoyed with our coffee each morning.
We also liked the honesty shop which was well stocked with the essentials.
The downside to this site is that it was at the start of our trip and we now use this as the benchmark against which we judge all others, this is a very difficult target for other campsites to even get close too.
We highly recommend and intend to be back late in this season or next season.

My partner and I have stayed here a couple of times now and will definitely be returning this year. It is by far the best campsite we have stayed at.
Paul and Zoe are very friendly and accommodating, and make you feel immediately welcome. The facilities are excellent and are very clean.
The site is well located and there is plenty to do in the area, including beaches, war sites and markets.
We are looking forward to returning!

Just spent a fabulous week at the gorgeous cheateau, Zoe and Paul and their family were warm and welcoming providing a great service for all who stay, even delivering fresh bread and croissants to your tent every morning. The honesty shop on site sold all essentials in case you ran out as well as lovely homemade jams and chutneys along with fresh homegrown veg and delicious fresh eggs,(duck and hen).
The facilities include 2 showers and 2 loo's, a huge American fridge freezer, washing up facilities, hot water, loan of freezer blocks, hot tub and natural swimming pond. All free and very clean!
There is also two gypsy roulottes on the field to hire which were both beautiful. Then just to add to the enchanted feel of the place they have adorable animals around, donkey, pony and horse, ducks, chickens, two cats and the gorgeous labrador Hector. The whole week was brilliant, close to all the WW2 sites we wanted to visit as well as some great towns. We cannot praise this site or the owners enough who made our week very special and will definitely be returning.Even if its just for Zoes jam!

This is our 2nd stay, we came last year and loved it so much we had to come back. We've booked again for next year as well. This is how we always imagined camping would be when we started. Sitting out at night under the stars with fires burning away. The fact is its a wonderful site, with wonderful people, in a wonderful area. I don't actually have much more to add other than we can already see where things were improved from last year. Fencing was improved, gates were improved, gypsy caravans added, new ponies etc. What we seemed to enjoy is that there weren't rules. That's not to say common respect isn't expected but there isn't an extensive list of site rules & everybody respects that, the site and each other. If you're looking for a lovely, friendly, clean site set in the beautiful French countryside then you've found your site. Looking forward to returning next year!

Have just returned from France and our last stop off was here with Zoe and Paul. All that you read about this site is true. It is a lovely spot with friendly people and excellent facilities. We loved our look in the roulottes too, they were gorgeous.Thank you for the loan of the roulottes book Zoe.
The site is in beautiful countryside yet close enough to large supermarkets for all shopping needs. If you only need a few things the honesty shop may be all you need and you can stay in the hot tub instead! I am looking forward to our stop next year already !

I booked this site having read previous reviews on this website and wasn't disappointed.
The site itself is beautiful, we could pick our spot and because its small it was friendly. The owners,Paul and Zoe are really friendly and helpful. Toilets and showers were clean and plenty of hot water and use of the hot tub was fab after busy day out.
Those with really small children would have to be really aware of the large pond on site but they would also love the animals.
Great place to stay to do the Normandy beaches - we were travelling with my 6 year old son and particularly recommend the battery at Grandcamp Maisy and Pointe du Hoc for keeping small people occupied and getting some of the history.

This is by far our favourite site we have ever stayed at. My 2 children and I stayed at this wonderful site for a whole week, before moving to another site nearer to Disney, and yet when my princess obsessed 4 yr old is asked about our holiday she tells everyone about how we stayed in the garden of a castle where there was a gorgeous dog called Hectar and a donkey called Bert and a hot tub!
My 11 yr old also loved the site and wants to return for the whole summer next year (if only.)
We had such a fantastic time here, we used it as a base for exploring the d-day landing beaches/museums etc.
I had moule frites for the first time whilst here and was lovely. Loved the bread delivered to the tent each morning, the fresh veg in the honesty shop.
I could allow my children to wander away from the tent and not worry about cars/ dangers. They often went off to play and loved the freedom they could have due to the no car policy.
Paul and zoe along with their children and Amy were fantastic and so friendly, they helped make our holiday so fantastic. Thank you to all of you, and see you next summer

What a fantastic site! If the idea of French style camping, situated cheek by jowl with your neighbour just inches away from your tent on a lively site right by the seaside is what you seek, then move on! This site is none of those things.
Ch. De Monfreville is a beautiful, quiet, picturesque site in a very open-plan English style. A maximum of 12 tents are allowed [plus a couple of old Romany caravans which are for rent] in the field which has no hookups, no separating hedges and is mostly flat and well-drained. There is also a reed-egded pond in the field which is very pretty and posed no problems to any of the tiny tots which were on site. Thankfully, common sense and not the Health & Safety Brigade prevailed over this aspect of the site.
The field overlooks the Marais, an area designated as a National Park and on which Kayaking trips can be made [ask at the Chateau]. Horses, ducks, geese and chickens are neighbours to campers and this just adds to the charm of the site.
The feel of the site is very cosy and everyone [mostly Brits and Dutch] seems to get on famously. There is a hot tub and an 'organic' pool [which to me looked like a pond], but turned out to be very very clean and the kids loved it! The hot tub is great!
Paul and Zoe our hosts made sure that nothing seemed too much trouble and seem seriously chilled out, which rubbed off on us as soon as we arrived. No cars are allowed in the camp field so all your kit is carted down in a trailer on the back of an old Fergie tractor [I learnt to drive on one of those!], so it means that you will need to have a good supply of battery lanterns. Little wood stoves/barbecues are also available and are permitted in the camp field which is a refreshing change and there is an honesty shop on site in one of the old farm outbuildings which contains some good fresh organic grub and other necessities.
There are only two loos and two showers but to be honest, this never seemed to cause an issue and they seemed ample for everyone on site. All is very clean and very tastefully and thoughtfully installed with more than a passing nod to the 'Frenchness' of it all. 'Je ne sais quoi' is in abundance here.
On one night, everyone on site seemed to collectively decide to eat outside and there were little firestoves going, lots of muted laughter and clearly more than a little red wine flowing. The kids were happily roasting marshmallows over the fires and it was a magical little moment and one which I will not forget in a hurry. I have been camping for over 30 years and this is one of THE best sites and experiences I have ever had. Yes the weather was a bit iffy on a couple of days but overall, what a site!
Peaceful, relaxing, beautiful and smile-generating - we'll definitely be back!

I know that every possible praise has already been lavished upon this campsite but I just wanted to add my own little contribution.
It is such a totally wonderful site and such a great pity that it stands out so much against so many other average sites. We travelled to 2 others in France during our trip and, although they were fine, I kept thinking back to the little touches that made Chateau de M so special. The cold, filtered water, the beautiful lake (the best ever to swim in), the hot tub, the fridge, the croissants, the view, the friendliness. The list is endless.
It was so perfect, I still want to cry!
