This was by far and away the best campsite we have ever stayed in with lots of lovely well thought out touches which made staying here seem more like 'glamping' than 'camping'!

The site, set around a large pond in the gardens of the château, was really picturesque with beautiful rolling views of the neighbouring national park and the location is fantastic with so many sights (WW2 and otherwise) nearby and within easy reach.

The owners Paul and Zoe together with their children, Jake and Molly and their summer helper Amy made us feel so welcome. Nothing was too much trouble for them and they all really went the extra mile.

It’s the first site we've ever been to where we got a guided tour of the grounds and facilities, were welcomed back from our sightseeing each day and where freshly baked pastries and breads were delivered to our tent each morning!

Zoe and Paul even hosted a birthday party in the barn for another camper who had his 40th birthday whilst there and everyone joined in enticed by the wonderful cake Zoe had baked!

The sheep, horse, pony, donkey, ducks, baby geese, doves and variety of weird and wonderful chickens were another factor in making this a really delightful campsite. We were particularly taken with Hector, a beautiful Labrador and the cats, Mungo and Bluebell who liked to cosy up with us in the evening to keep our feet warm! The gardens tenderly cared for by Zoe's mother June are beautiful and another attraction.

There are plenty of free bbq's which you can use and the honesty shop is great and well stocked with all manner of home made chutneys, jams and sauces, freshly laid duck and chicken eggs as well as coal / wood for your bbq's and various kitchen / bathroom products. You just help yourself to what you want, write it in a book and pop your money in the honesty box. There is also a very good book exchange with lots of really good titles including new ones. We didn't avail ourselves of the ping pong, darts, the kayaks or the natural swimming pond but they're there and I mustn't forget to mention the hot tub which is a wonderful way to relax at the end of the day!

The kitchen and bathroom facilities were also top notch. There is a huge american style fridge freezer where you can store your perishables and you can even get chilled water and ice cubes for your drinks!

The toilets and showers were extremely clean and very pretty with an old cobbled floor, natural wood doors, exposed brickwork, and antique style enamel pictures etc and whilst I know it sounds weird, they smelt absolutely lovely and reminded me of the smell in my aunties art studio! There is also a plug so you can recharge your phones / cameras or shave / dry your hair!

We don't normally go back to the same place twice but this is a little slice of paradise which we were utterly smitten with and we're already planning a return visit next year!

(10 out of 10 on all counts except child friendliness as a bit of caution is required owing to the pond.)

This place was great, fully recommend it. Owners go out of their way to help you in everything you need and the animals provide full entertainment. Hot tub was lovely and the American fridge with filtered water and ice available made camping such a luxury.

Its a really convenient place to stay for other places too. We have a 2 year old who loved it there. Had to keep an eye on him with the lake which everyone else will love but he got used to it. He loved the animals and the owners even let him ride a pony. Toilets and showers are lovely within the Chateau.

Washing can be done in the owner's machine for the same price as the laundrette. All v.Convenient and great to have fresh bread and pastries delivered.

I found details of Chateau Monfreville from this very website and on reading the solitary review at the time, hoped that if the camp site was even half as good as the review, I wouldn't be disappointed. I have to say, the review was spot on. Chateau Monfreville is outstanding. Quite simply, it is the best campsite I have ever had the pleasure to stay on and I have been camping for many years. At €12 per two-man tent per night, it's an absolute steal.

It has already been said how nice, approachable, friendly and accommodating Paul and Zoe are. I don't mind repeating this one bit. In addition, June, Zoe's Mum, is equally lovely as were everyone who is part of the family or helping Paul out working on the Chateau. They are so welcoming, nothing was ever any trouble, totally trusting, always wave and say hello, stand and chat and will accommodate any requests.

We arrived on 16 September in the middle of 45mph winds. We had driven down straight from Boulogne. It was so nice to be greeted with a big smile and warm welcome by Zoe and the offer of a nice cup of tea. She gave us a guided tour of all the facilities before her son drove our gear down to the camp site, which is situated in a field at the rear of the Chateau. It was no trouble at all that we needed two trailer loads for our gear. We felt immediately welcomed.

There were three other tents already pitched and, as another reviewer has stated, we could pick where we wished to pitch. In addition, it was no problem at all that we wanted to pitch a small tent for storage in addition to our own. No extra cost.

The facilities at the rear of the Chateau for toilets (x2), showers (x2), wash basins (x2) and a sink for washing pots were lovely. Clean, loved the original brick work and old enamel french signs, which gave that real feel to the place and so important, great showers which were clean, roomy and lashings of hot water. We never had to queue. Through speaking with Paul, he intends for there to be no more than 12 tents at any one time so as not to have over-capacity of the facilities. They do not and have no intentions of accommodating caravans or motorhomes. Good stuff.

In addition to the facilities already mentioned, they provide an American style fridge-freezer. Great to put freeze packs in for cool boxes and anything else you may have brought or bought which needs to be either frozen or refrigerated. In the fridge they have a selection of 'goodies' for purchase such as bottles of Normany cider, wine, beer and water. Reasonable prices (€5 for cider or wine and €1 for a bottle of beer or water). You leave money in a jar or let either Paul or Zoe know what you have taken. They re-stock every day. They also have a plug point, nice and handy for re-charging mobile phones, lamps etc. There's no charge for a re-charge.

At the front of the Chateau adjacent to the two rentable cottages, there is a barn shop which stocks organic seasonal veggies, homemade jams, chutneys, ragu, UHT milk and sundries such as coffee, sugar etc. You can even go collect your own eggs from the hens in their coop at the back of the barns! You write in a book what you have taken and leave the money in the pot. I loved the 'honesty box' approach. It spoke volumes of how the Chateau is run. One camper had written in the comment book, 'If you drive a Ferrari, it's the place you could leave the keys in the ignition, the door unlocked and come back to it the following day and it would be exactly how you left it.'

Loved the animals. Loved the roaming ducks and geese. We loved the hens even more who would sprint down to your tent mid-morning to see what tit bits you may have! You may not want the last of last night's baguette but they do. The two resident cats live in harmony with the birds and what a place for them to live! I want to come back after I die as a cat who lives at Chateau Monfreville.

Bert the donkey resides in one of the fields at the front of the Chateau and during our stay, we were serenaded at night by the sounds of owls nesting in the trees. If you love animals and wildlife, you will not be disappointed.

We didn't take up the offer of cooked breakfasts or evening meals by Zoe but reading the comment book on site completed by other campers, the food sounded fantastic. I think it was €10 for a full English breakfast and between €10-€39 per head for evening meals depending on whether you ate one or four courses. The latter definitely included aperitifs, wine and coffee.

The nearest town to the Chateau is Isgny and it's a lovely 4km drive along delightful bocage roads. Two decent hypermarkets (cheap fuel at €0.97 litre for diesel) and loads of nice local bakeries, butchers and what have you.

If you are interested in exploring the D-Day beaches, as we were, then the Chateau is a great base. Omaha beach is the nearest. Quick trip up the D113 via La Cambe to the coastal road, the D514. All the other beaches east of Omaha are easily accessible on the same road. Utah beach is easy by using the N13 west (no tolls) and then out to La Madeleine. Bayeaux on the N13 east is no more than half hour and Caen easily within an hour on the same motorway. Again, no tolls and the french roads are to die for.

We did lots of exploring over the 8 nights we stayed and we would arrive back tired and ready to eat and enjoy a couple of bottles of either local wine or cider. We looked forward to going back to the site as it is the most peaceful and relaxing place you could ever wish for. It's bliss.

I really can't recommend Chateau Monfreville too highly. It really is that good. We have a policy of not returning to the same place twice but to be honest, it's that good we are already planning to return next year.

Had the most amazing time with Paul & Zoe @ Chat Monfreville with al their animals and amenities at this MOST gorgeous spot near D Day beaches. Most hospitable of hosts and what a stunning location. Most relaxing countryside, fab food on site and great open field + the hot tub and pond combination just perfect. The combined 6 kids with us (12 in all) found it almost impossible to leave

The site itself is set in the large gardens of a chateau which has ample parking away from the site. Your luggage is driven by tractor down to the site which isn't marked and you can pick your spot, as a bonus the kids got a ride in the trailer back up again! This means it really feels like a campsite and there's no danger of cars round the children, alarms on cars, lights flashing late at night etc

There are 2 toilets and 2 showers and 1 sink area. Only once did we have to queue for the sink area as they are determined to keep numbers down. There is free use of the hot tub which is a FAB idea and use of a natural pool which is a pond. We ordered fresh bread each day which was delivered to our tent the next morning. If you're not up Paul will unzip enough to post your bread through! There's also the option of croissants etc and breakfasts or meals can be orderded to eat at the chateau. There is a covered area should the weather prove to much and an indoor table tennis room (very rustic).

There is plenty to do on the historic side as its in the Normandy beach areas but also the beaches are beautiful in their own right and are a short drive away. They have chickens, ducks, donkey, rabbits, cats and sheep all around the site which are part of the charm and entertainment. Can't wait to return next year! Only criticism is that we used a satnav to get there and ended up going round the local church for an hour. Get directions from them before you leave!

Fantastic camping experience! We camped here for 8 nights and had a brilliant time, as did our little boy (aged 3yrs).

The site is the rear field/garden of a beautiful chataeu, its very very special.

Great location, very peaceful, very quiet, gorgeous surrounding countryside.

We received a very warm welcome from the owners and all their animals! Cars are not allowed in the camping field which we personally liked, and the owner kindly used their vintage tractor to move all of our equipment down to the site.

The onsite facilities were great - newly furbished toilets and showers finished to a very high standard, a huge fridge provided for campers to use, fresh bread delivered every morning, wine and beer stock available if you don't fancy a trip to the supermarket, eggs available from the roaming chickens, little shop selling supplies, organic veg and home made soups etc. Evening meals provided if you want that extra special experience. Nothing was too much trouble.

Lots of opportunities to sit back and relax on site - a super hot tub, a pretty & natural pond for a unique swimming experience -you have to try it as its so relaxing to swim among lily pads! Bikes were available to enjoy the local (flat!) countryside, beautiful surroundings to simply sit and enjoy the wonderful gardens.

Plenty to do within an hours drive - wonderful small local towns to visit and enjoy a glass of vino or local cider, DDay museums and so many great beaches - Omaha beach is fantastic for bathing and digging sandcastles - larger towns of Bayeaux, Caen for more museums and shopping, lots of chateau's and houses to visit - driving around the local area is very easy.

We totally felt that we had escaped from the everyday rush of life here and can't wait to return again soon.

We loved this place and will definitely go back! Not commercial and back to nature / outdoor living. The setting is gorgeous, with rural views and in the grounds of a small chateau. The campsite is a field, with no cars in it, but a tractor will lug your stuff the short way, which means it certainly does not feel like a carpark like some campsites do.
There are very clean showers and toilets, fridge facilities, washing up space. These are however limited (the only reason for 9/10 rather than top marks), as they want to limit the numbers and avoid overcrowding.
There are ducks and chickens wandering about, and you can buy bits and bobs from the honesty shop. There is a pond that you can swim in if you fancy it, and a hot tub. I suggested 9/10 for child friendliness instead of 10/10 as some campers with kids would expect a play area or swimming pool, but they've got outdoor games for campers' use and if your children like games and balls and animals, there is plenty to entertain them. It is very quiet and peaceful and rural.
The owners are great, very friendly, open and helpful. There is a large intermarche supermarket about 5-10mins away, and the location is superb for Normandy landings beaches, Bayeux, Mont St Michel etc etc. Although the beaches are historically significant, they are also fantastic for young kids - long and sandy and shallow slopes. There is so much to do that we will be going back and would highly recommend this beautiful place.
