As one of the group of three mentioned in a previous review I felt obliged to reply in defence of myself and the site. There was at least 3m between units and your claim that you could touch both vans at once is improbable. My van is still in place and so after seeing the review today I investigated further. Between my pitch and the electricity pole which marks the edge of this area is 21 large paces. This space is used for two pitches (yours and another) and is reasonably generous. Similarly with regard to our spacing we also took up a width of 21 paces with two vans parallel, because there is a great depth between the lake and the road at this point we are able to place a third van at right angles forming a great you shaped group camp which houses two twin axles, a third caravan, three awnings (two of which are 3m width) we do this whilst still maintaining the 3m separation and with space for a 4.5m square event shelter!

Obviously we have no issues about the pitch sizes on this site which in this prime area are very deep but perhaps only average in width. Agreed that there was a splitter in the 'Lekky but this was not for us (we pay for and use 3 hook ups) but to assist a family in a tent two extension leads away who had a very young child and were finding the nights too cold.

We have used this site for 15 years and each year we are pleased to see reinvestment in the facilities. True it is very popular at peak times but the facilities cope with the numbers and are regularly serviced.

Locations like this are few and far between, God stopped making lakes a long time ago and I am not aware of any more man-made locations under construction in the area.

Thanks for acknowledging that we were considerate neighbours, I would always prefer to be 3m from a considerate neighbour than 30m from a noisy one.

We stayed over the Easter Bank Holiday and the week leading up to it. The site is great for the kids and always clean and tidy. We used the club house a few times and the food here was fantastic as was the service.

In response to sarahh56 I was also on the front by the side of the lake (the big green tent on the end) and we had loads of space. The 3 caravans you are on about were 2 or 3 pitches down from me. We had electric all week but we knew that we would not be able to have a hook up for the bank holiday weekend. The 3 caravans you are on about were kind enough to let us share one with them so we could have a heater on at night, so it was me on the splitter and not them.

The water sports centre were also really helpful and rented us life jackets for the week at a very good price.

All in all we loved it that much we have now bought a caravan and are going back for Whitsun week and have got a seasonal pitch from the 1st of July for the rest of the year.

Had a fab 4 night here beautiful lake on site.

We loved the dog compound here good to let your dog run around without the worry of it running off

The children's play ground was good also

Pub/cafe was brilliant made us feel so welcome food was good to

Toilet and unisex shower block always clean.

The site was very busy over this weekend and the 3 metre gap was not adhered to by many I know a lots of friend and family want to be together but being able to touch each others tent is a huge risk and should really be put into action.

Although busy the site was always quiet by 10.30 the local cuckoo did wake me at 5 but nice to hear the wildlife

Down side is they need more lighting around the paths/roadway as walking to toilet in the pitch black is a little difficult

Also with having a big lake I noticed no life rings around lake for people who might get into trouble/fall into water

Cant wait to go back in June, was good to just sit and watch the world go by

We stayed over the bank holiday and had glorious weather. All in all a nice clean site, great views over the lake and a small clubhouse where they had a little bit of entertainment for younger children.

There are 2 showers in the toilet block and a further 4 unisex ones. I thought that bearing in mind the site was full that this was not enough, however I never had to queue, although on the last morning my shower was stone cold. This is the first time ever I have ever had a cold shower on a camp site!

My main criticism is that the literature you are given and signs on the campsite state that there must be 3 metres between units. The day after we arrived 3 friends in their vans arrived and and pitched up in a space only really suitable for 2, we could touch our van and the one next to us with our arms outstretched so this was no where near 3 metres! There were too many vans on their part of the site as they had to use splitters on their hook ups. Saying that the neighbours were not noisy and didn't disturb us.

We would return if we could guarantee a decent amount of pitch space

Stayed for a week, 1st week of August. Level grass pitch with ehu on the edge of the lake - perfect as we brought kayaks with us so it was just a few yards to drag them along the grass before putting them into the water. The site is divided into two separate areas. On the one side of the lake is the reception, cafe/bar (which we didn't sample but which seemed to be pretty empty all week but was probably used more at the weekend), & watersports centre where the staff were very friendly and helpful. Cafe and bar hours vary from day to day and as far as I could tell they don't serve food in the evenings (well, not weekday evenings anyhow)and don't do takeaways. There is an area of seasonal pitches on this side of the lake and behind those the wooden chalets that are used by school groups etc. During term time. Also a terraced camping/touring section with some ehu points. This wasn't very busy at all and had fab views of the lake below but wouldn't have been much fun if we'd been pitched there with our kayaks as wouldn't want to haul them up the slopes each time.

Between the two areas is a row of 12 static holiday homes, clearly all privately owned with the owners appearing to be trying to outdo each other with how many ornaments/fountains/planters/lights etc. They could fit onto their patch! These were only really in use at weekend.

Then there was the side we were on - a big flat field for campers/tourers with some ehu, in front of which was 'our' row of lakeside pitches. Also a 'village' of I would guess about 100 seasonal pitches which surrounds the facilities block. Here the Better Than The Jones's approach was very much in evidence with pitches crammed full of garden furniture/chimineas/solar lights etc. Etc.

During the week the site was very quiet and peaceful but come Friday evening the place quadrupled in numbers when the regulars arrived for the weekend and it was only then that the showers had queues - but only a few so not really a problem. Although there are only 2 showers in each block on this side of the lake there are 4 unisex ones too and they were all clean and spacious.

The site was quiet each evening by about 10.30pm and most of the tourers and tenters were families who stayed just 2 or 3 days.

The kids enjoyed the watersports (our reason for staying here) and even spent one day on an Activity Package (£45 each for about 5 hours doing kayaking, raft-building, windsurfing and sailing) which gave us poor old parents a bit of a rest! The lake is small though and so unless you do change/hire craft it does get a bit samey after a while. You can kayak down the river to Tewkesbury (and prob beyond if you're up to it) but it's a long haul to carry the craft as access to the river is along a footpath from the site.

The one huge bonus here, compared with other watersports lake sites that I've looked up, is that if you are camping here you don't pay a launch fee to use your own kayak on the lake which otherwise costs about £6 per craft per day so mounts up if like us you've got 3 kayaks!

No shop on site apart from a few tie down kits (essential here) and tent pegs in reception but the town is about a 5 min drive away and has a Somerfield and Tesco Express in the centre and a Morrisons on the outskirts.

We would definitely return - although perhaps for a shorter stay and will try to avoid weekends if poss as we loved the peacefulness of this site mid-week.

Pitched 2 tents for my kids and I on the banks of the dam - weather was wet and cold but that did not stop us enjoying the wonderful facilities - games room, walking, children's playground and an even bigger bonus is that my kids learnt how to canoe on the dam - fantastic site, clean and friendly staff.

The only thing that I wasn't happy with was the restaurant on-site - there were no signs on the door for opening times and was mostly used as a staff canteen - although the guys at the water sports desk made me some coffee when I couldn't get any from the restaurant.

Loved the ability for a quick walk to the River Avon - watched a group of young kids being taken on a river canoe trip - great fun by the looks of it.

We'll be back.

We visited in June this year and the site was really full to bursting. The toilet block was always full with queues for the loos and 2 showers. The facilities are kept clean.

The site is in a lovely location but the organisation of pitches is very hit and miss. The site over the other side of the lake with a twin axle can be difficult to navigate as there is no road system ie. no one way and a lot of posts and a big roundabout which takes some negotiating.

If you have kids it'll be great, there's loads for them to do and loads of other kids.

It is a quiet site after 11pm.

Would we stay again - No we wouldn't - but I think we've been spoilt with the CC sites, with big pitches and great facilities. For people camping with kids I think it's a great site.

Stayed for a week, and extended by a night. Loved the site. Beautiful location, ideal for kids and dogs. Pitch up any where, in allocated area, saves hassle of pitches being to close.

Being woken by ducks outside tent in the morning was lovely, kids thought it was great.

Dog walking field was excellent, fully enclosed slightly away from the site, even provided poop scoop bags- nice touch.

Site patrolled often, dealt with any issue straight away, firm but fair, and pleasant about it to.

The only downside was, it could do with more toilets and showers, but in saying that, we had maximum queue time of 5 minutes, perfectly acceptable. However, they were always kept clean, and no end of hot water.

We arrived on site on a windy and gloomy day. The owners were very friendly and showed us where we could pitch. We were given two areas where we could pitch either up the top of the site near the entrance / climbing wall or the other side of the lake near the toilet blocks. We chose the other side of the lake purely because it was a windy day and we thought it would be more sheltered.

You could choose where you wanted to pitch, so we chose near the trees. This was not a good idea, as there was lots of midges and as it rained for two days, the grass became very boggy. We were a bit miffed because the owners should have known this and could have told us.

They have a big toilet block which is split between ladies and mens, you need a key fob to access these which you will be given on arrival (£5 refundable deposit). The toilets were very clean which housed two shower cubicles, four sink cubicles and half a dozen toilets. The showers had hot water. There was also a set of shower cubicles only next to the toilet block, but I have to say that when I used these I found the water wasn't as hot as the main ones. I never had to queue for any of the facilities which is always a bonus.

Around the back of the toilet block you will find a covered area which houses fresh water, chemical waste disposal, two sinks for washing up dishes and numerous commercial wheelie bins for rubbish.

On site they have a cafe/bar which serve a good range of food, we ate in there one night and the food was lovely, reasonably priced too. They also have a games room housing a pool table and arcade machines, etc which kept the kids amused during the wet weather. There is a gym but we didn't use these facilities. They have a laundry room around the back of the gym which houses a top loading washing machine, two industrial tumble driers and an iron and iron board. We did have to use these facilities and for a wash it costs £1.20 (20 mins) and £1.50 for the tumble dryer (30 mins). You have to get tokens from reception, quite a reasonable price.

As it is quite a big site, you would think they could have a small shop to sell the basics but it's not far to pop into Tewkesbury where they have a big Morrisons.

There was a playground for the kids and if you're into watersports, plenty to do on the lake. We hired a canoe for 3 people for half hour for £8, £15 for an hour and life buoyancy jackets included. Half an hour would be plenty as the lake is not huge

A pleasant site but not if it has been raining plus you could hear the motorway and the geese were quite noisy.

We regularly use this site. The facilities are clean and the staff helpful. The lake is a bonus and even if you don't use it, many hours can be spend watching sailors, windsurfers canoeists etc.

There is a club, which serves food on site if you want to use it. You are near to Tewkesbury which has a market twice a week and there are a variety of local shops as well as some of the chains.

The charges at Croft do not vary through the year and charges include use of the lake. The site is very friendly and I have recommended it to our friends
