I was going to cancel this trip after reading previous reviews. We are a family with 1 teenager and 2 young children, after recovering from the shock of the surrounding area pleasantly surprised. Field - we could camp where we wanted, toilets & showers below average but staff did their best to keep standards higher! All site staff went out off their way to ensure all needs met. Downside is people not controlling their dogs - it states dogs must be kept on a lead for a reason! Would recommend for a cheap and cheerful break with the children. Its a holiday camp and that is what you get. Hoping to return next summer.

We spent 4 nights during high season in our tent. Camping field was large and a seemed a bit disorganised but to some this was not a bad thing as pitches were available and you could choose your own. We had plenty of room as we have a large tent and some sites pitches are too small. Main downside was the toilet block. Old broken and dirty are the best I can say. No hot water in the washing up areas was my main gripe but wife and 2 teenage daughters certainly disliked the toilet block. Site staff were friendly facilities and entertainment excellent. The kids club looked really good although ours are too old the young kids seemed very well looked after. Bars and evening entertainment very good. Pools are clean but very small and busy. Enjoyed a couple of days on the loungers round the outdoor pool. Beach is very close and nice and clean. In summary a great site but let down by the toilet/shower block.

We stayed at a large commercial site with what we expected to be good facilities.

The toilet block was not very clean. Sinks set so far back in the counter that even I as someone tall found it hard to use. Washing up facilities were poor and had to queue

Shower temperatures were fixed so if you don't like their temperature its hard to take one.

From the child friendly view. Access to the pool was through the games arcade. Which we found to be a distraction on the way to the pool. The pool was always crowded.

Staff were really not that helpful

There is great access to the beach and an interesting Martello tower just near the entrance

We stayed on this site last week. As a family of 9, we had reasonable choice in getting two pitches together. There didn't seem to be any structure to the placement of pitches, which was to our advantage though a tad confusing at first.

The tourers field was large but the toilet facilities were very lacking, with only 6 toilets in the ladies and 4 in the gents, to service the whole field of people. There are just 3 sinks squashed into a corner, so there was no room to move or feel comfortable enough to wash/clean teeth etc. It was also very dirty, with no toilet rolls, locking doors or working flushes. The showers were also dirty as there were no mops left for cleaning away sand etc, and the cubicles are very small with no where to put your stuff. There are only 2 washing-up sinks, with no working taps, let-alone any hot water. We found these facilities extremely dismal and we would certainly recommend that you take your own portaloo and washing bowl.

On the plus side, the campsite is in a lovely location, only a minute's walk from a sandy bay, good for playing in the sea and building sandcastles. The pool is quite small though and working on a booking system, with one-hour slots. But we liked the beach so much, we only went to the pool twice.

The kid's club 'Sparky's Krew' was brilliant entertainment. Our 4 children chose activities through the week and loved all of them. The Fun Time in the club in the evening was also great fun for them.

If you are looking for a beachy holiday with resort-type entertainment, I would heartily recommend Martello Beach. BUT the toilet block is in dire need of knocking down. Park Resorts should take more care of their tourers because we pay a lot of money and expect good sanitation.

This is the first site we have visited where we were able to choose our own pitch. This was a bit of a novelty for us and we were able to choose a pitch that suited us and our needs. I don't like being hemmed into a corner or slap bang in the middle of a field surrounded by others, so we chose the first pitch as you come in the gate so we could watch what was going on. It also gave us the advantage of a little extra room with a grass area to park the car next to the pitch.

The pitches were rather small, and we all struggled to imagine how anyone who had pitched in the centre of the field would ever manage to get out again if the site was full and others parked around them. Those in front would have had no option to move to allow those behind to get out. There was no road or track other than the one around the edge, so those in the middle were there to stay until there was a way clear for them. The whole camping area needs to be re-thought with this in mind. There didn't appear to be any kind of attendant for the camping area, so other than collecting the welcome pack from main reception upon arrival, we didn't see or speak to any other staff the whole time we were there. There didn't seem to be anyone going round checking that the campers on site were all meant to be there and there was no security other than a guy who drove round the whole camp in a very beat up old pick up with a headlight missing.

A big let down on the camping field was that although there was lighting, it wasn't working, so after dark, if you didn't have your own strong torch or lantern, you had no option but to head off towards the direction of the lights in the toilet block and hope for the best. During the night I did hear someone come a cropper close by our van because it was so dark and they had obviously either tripped over someone's guy rope or lost their footing on a dip in the grass.

We had quite a storm to contend with, and as the field is quite open, we ended up taking our awning down to stop it blowing away or ripping off the side of the van.

The entrance into the park along the sea front road is very narrow, and not confidence inspiring after driving past dozens of plots of land with some very shabby looking bungalows crammed onto them. If two tourers came face to face along that road, there would be some difficulty passing, especially with residents own vehicles parked outside their own properties. We were fortunate, due to the time we arrived, but take heed of the 10am leaving and 4pm take over, which is likely to be done with this in mind to avoid incoming and outgoing campers clashing (or crashing!).

The bar and diner were nice and we had a nice cooked breakfast there, although the sausages were as thin as pencils! You have to go through the amusement arcade to get to the other facilities, which if you can't say no to your kids wanting a go on something, could prove costly.

New static caravans being dumped on the road side done nothing to ease the flow of traffic to get past.

Hubby and our friend said the toilets/showers were ok but old and basic. I used the one in our van due to my own disability.

The elsan point was also basic, with no tap for rinsing out your container.

Nicely located site right on the beach, but not a lot to do in the local area.

Was ok for a few days, but wouldn't go there for much longer than that.

This site is good value with plenty to do for a young family.

The swimming pool is warm but small, no booking system in place when we visited.

The showers were hot but both toilet blocks need a revamp and by the end of the day the were pretty messy.

The tourer field was a bit of a mess as the site floods in winter and there was heavy building machinery that had rutted the ground.

There was lots of good free entertainment and the beach is outside the site gate.

We have also been to Highfield Grange in Clacton, also owned by Park Resorts, and of the two we would recommend Highfield Grange.

Was very dissappointed with this campsite, if it hadn't been for the lovely weather I would have gone home.

On the booking invoice it told us that would could not pitch till 4. 00pm we arrived at around 4. 30pm, when we checked in we were told to pitch where we could, I understand that as it was the Bank Holiday weekend and very busy, but many other campers told us they had arrived in the morning and been allowed to pitch. The ground was very bad hardly any grass and very uneven and lumpy, and as for the 6m x 6m rule that was a joke, people had pitched all over the place. One of the only half decent pitches left was cover in fag butts, there was a lot of rubbish about so I spent the first 10 minutes picking them up, before we could put up our tent. Whilst doing this 2 men and a woman who were drunk with beer cans in their hands stood and watched us, like they were checking out our gear, this put us on edge a bit. Also having to listen to other campers music till three in the morning was not a pleasure.

The showers and toilets were awful, even though there was cleaners around most days, it seemed to always be very dirty. Very outdated and most of the loos had no locks.

The site itself was ok. I only picked this type of site, for the kids as it had a pool (very small) and entertainment, the shop had pretty much everything you needed,

On a good note, the beach and walk into Clacton was the highlight. A lovely walk along the beach front took about 1hr and there was plenty to do when you got there, as I said the weather was great, we had sun everyday.

I understand that this was a very busy time for the site, but we never saw any wardens or staff on the camp pitch the whole time we were there, no one came to check we had pitched up ok,

If you enjoy this type of campsite then fine, but I will be more selective in future, No way should this site be 4 star

Martello Beach would not be, im my opinion, a great choice for a first camping experience.

On arrival the young boy at reception, although polite, was limited in what he offered to us. A welcome pack (a glorified sales pitch for caravans) and a point in the general direction of our pitch was all that was offered. No entertainment timetable was supplied meaning no advanced evening plans could be made. Activity timetables for children was also unavailable meaning parents did not know when they could plan off site excursions.

The leisure complex, although neat and aesthetically pleasing, was too small to accommodate the numerous holiday makers. It was virtually impossible to get a seat in The Show Bar unless you arrived a good few hours in advance of the evening entertainment. Furthermore the second, non-entertainment bar, was far too expensive for most families with children that are on low incomes, thus deciding to stay in the UK as opposed to a more expensive foreign holiday. For example three burger and chip meals and three soft drinks came to just shy of £20. The on site mini-supermarket was also considerably more expensive than you may find in your local shops.

The small scale of the swimming pools meant a booking system was in place meaning children could not turn up as and when they wanted. And the hour time slots allocated for each session in reality was closer to a 40 minute session as the lifeguards asked swimmers to exit the pool so they could clean before the next session.

Had this information been made available in advance, I would not have booked here as on site swimming is normally a big attraction for my children, who would quite happily spend the majority of their holiday in the pool.

The toilet facilities (apparently refurbished this year) were generally old fashioned with wall tiles missing, toilets broken and no locks on half the doors. The showers, although hot, normally had blocked drains with only a minute hook on the door for clothes and no physical barrier between the water and the hooks leading to damp clothes.

The laundrette only had three washers and three dryers which were small in size and again, not big enough to provide laundrette facilities for families. One particularly busy day it took over four hours to wash and dry one load of washing due to queues for the machines.

On a brighter note, the pitch itself coped miraculously well after one of the biggest storm my family, as well as other campers, had witnessed. The swampy ground drained in just a couple of hours, despite being almost completely flooded.

Another quite pleasant surprise was the walk along the Martello Beach seafront. Stretching sandy beaches led to a hidden gem in the Sailor Boy Pub. Prices for food and drink was much more reasonable here. The free-entry Martello Tower which is just off the seafront is a quite interesting attraction, especially for historical enthusiasts, with various images charting the local areas history. They also organised activities for children. However opening times are limited throughout the year, so check in advance before planning a trip.

Thankfully although the campsite was not what we were led to believe from the brochure, we enjoyed our first camping experience sitting outside the tent (in between showers and thunder storms) just relaxing and watching the world go by

Very nice family site, loads for kids to do, swimming pools are a bit small, but by operating 1 hour sessions it never gets over crowded. Showers were ok, washing up sinks basic and only 2 x of them. Ground very lumpy, and just pitch were you like gets a bit messy. They now allow dogs, and there were plenty of them, nothing against dogs but many were off leads and heard one person, complaining to a dog owner about this, but a site I would return to.

I camped here for one night with my two children recently and my overall verdict was good. For £27 we had the use of the clubsite, pool and entertainment. The showers and toilets were ok and fairly clean considering it was the height of season. The park's a mixture of statics, tourers/camper vans with EHCs and tents. If you want an electric hook up then be prepared to have to set up on top of someone else because it was absolutely mobbed. The tents were better as you can spread out more. We set up at the end of the field which overlooked a field with cows and we had plenty of space and privacy so it was really nice. The site's also next door to the beach and within easy driving distance of Clacton which is also very nice. The children's playground was also nice and big.

Now, gripes, there weren't that many but I have to agree with previous reviewers about dogs. We were near a tent that (unbeknown to us before we pitched) had two massive dobermans. This was offputting especially with kids on site. The entertainment center's designed appallingly. The entrance to the site runs through the small amusements arcade so you have to walk through this to get to everything. Because both the indoor and outdoor pools are so tiny they have to run session times which means you have to queue up through the amusement arcade and wait to be let in. This means that if you want to use the pool you have to plan your day around a session time. If you're on holiday you should be able to use the pool when you like. It's supposed to be a 4 star site, they've got plenty of room so why not build a bigger pool, a bigger amusement center? They could really improve things. The onsite shop shuts at 7, why not stay open till later like on the continent? - all typically British attitudes. Jaywick is rough looking but you don't have to go there.

It wouldn't be my choice to stay here for a long period but for the odd one or two nights it's fine.
