Set adjacent to an ancient wood of special scientific interest, this beautiful little site (57 hard standing pitches) positively teems with wildlife.
The site entrance is quite narrow which may explain the request for no arrivals before 1pm and all departures by 11am. We arrived on Friday afternoon for the Bank Holiday weekend, not having visited the site before.
We were told that Bolton Abbey was a lovely place to visit with plenty to do. That is so right! We only scratched the surface on our three night stay.
Approach to the site via Bolton Abbey is on a windy, narrow, bouncy road. The arch at Bolton is tight, but by taking it slowly no problem at all. We missed the campsite however, as we were looking for the usual Caravan Club sign which is not there. We were not the only people to do this, as on a walk later we saw two other caravans turning around to return to the site.
The site is laid out amongst trees in a one way loop, with one large cul-de-sac down a small hill. There is one very clean facilities block with very hot showers. There is an information shed and dog walk.
Whilst there we visited Grassington, Skipton and a couple of small villages off the beaten track. One - Appletreewick had a very nice PH selling real ale, pub food and loads of interesting local historical information. We also tried our hand at Geocaching in the area, which again led us to some lovely little spots off the beaten track.
Wildlife on site was one of the highlights of the weekend, bird species seen and identified were Blackbird, Pheasant, Mallards by the score, Mandarin Ducks, Song thrush, Great Tit, Coal Tit, Blue Tit, Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Siskin, Nuthatch, Robin, Goldfinch. We also heard woodpeckers but never saw the elusive little tappers. Gray squirrel in abundance sadly no Reds. But the biggest thrill of all was walking along the dog walk on our evening stroll and seeing two small Deer.
So, would we go back to Strid Wood? You bet we would, we did so much but we didn’t even go to Bolton Abbey, which is top of the list for our next stay.

This site is located on the Bolton Abbey Estate 2 miles north of Bolton Abbey and about 8 miles from Skipton. It is owned by the Caravan Club and is open March to January. For members and non-members. Earliest arrival time is 1pm and departures are before 11am.
Welcome on arrival was good and the wardens were helpful throughout our stay.
There are 57 touring pitches all hardstandings on three levels. Pitches are generally level so you may not need levelling blocks.
The security barriers at the site entrance are controlled by an electronic card.
There is a single heated toilet block with showers, WCs and privacy cubicles. Also a disabled bathroom, washing up/vegetable preparation area and laundry facilities. The block was of a good standard and very clean. Access to the block is by a key.
Service points around the site for water and rubbish disposal. Also chemical disposal facilities. Recycling facilities for paper and glass.
TV reception was reasonably good using the aerial on the electricity bollard. Some mobile phones do not work on this site.
There is a dog walk on site or you have Strid Woods adjacent.
No children's play area on site.
Limited shopping facilities at Bolton Abbey (about 2 miles) in the village Post Office and a good quality butcher. Wide range of shops including supermarkets in Skipton or Ilkley.
We paid £15.20 per night for standard hardstanding pitch with 16 amp electrical hook-up, caravan, awning and two adults.
Local attractions include:
• The Bolton Abbey Estate with miles of walks through the woods or alongside the River Wharfe including the spectacular Strid where the river narrows and the water rushes with great force. Barden Tower a derelict hunting lodge is about a mile from the site
• Yorkshire Dales for walking or cycling
• Embsay Steam Railway about 6 miles from the site. Whilst the blokes are getting smuts in their eyes their wives may prefer to be at Embsay Crafts just across from the station.
• Grassington is a pretty village about 8 miles away with cobbled streets and plenty of outdoor gear shops. It has a Dickensian festival in December.
• Skipton is a very nice market town with a thriving street market four days a week and plenty of variety of shops. Skipton Castle is over 900 years old but very well preserved. Canal trips on the Leeds to Liverpool canal.
If you like a tranquil site with great walking facilities on your doorstep this could be the site for you.

As usual immaculate and a very clean site, no playground for children. Excellent walking from the site, go to site office and turn right down the hill to the river warfe, turn right and head for bolton abbey. If you want to rid yourself of £150 yes £150 book an evening meal at the devonshire arms! The Bull on the main skipton by pass is worth a mention, friendly and good pub grub. Only disappointment about the site was no sky tv and the booster system was in a word rubbish

Lovely site, very peaceful, friendly wardens. Large pitches, nice walks, nice location.
Not a lot for kids to do, ground very hard bent rock pegs here. Television poor but aerial connection on hook up gives basic 4 channels, Freeview no, Satellite no too many trees.
Lots of fairly local attractions. Local shops poorly stocked with regard to food, supermarket 8 mls (Skipton) nearest pub the Duke of Devonshire 2.5 mls (very expensive +posh) next nearest Appletreewick village good beer good grub good prices.
All in all a site we shall return to and highly reccomend.

Third visit to this site, and the new very friendly and helpful wardens have been hard at work with much needed maintenance. Showers and loos all kept spotlessly clean. Washing machine £3 and tumble drier 70pence for 15 minutes. Also a drying cabinet for wet walking gear.
Basic supplies - bread and milk kept in reception, but for other items, either Skipton or Ilkley are about ten minutes drive. Ilkley has Tesco, Booths and M&S food plus a brilliant butcher - Lishmans, and other good food shops. Skipton has Tesco (new store currently being built), Morrisons and an excellent range of shops and market. Good food to be had in local pubs, try the Fountaine at Linton their Tick Tock menu from 6pm is fantastic value - pay according to the time - for us £6.10 for two very good courses, or for something a little posher, the brasserie at the Devonshire Arms - excellent fish and chips for £11.00, and they do half portions. Avoid the Clarendon at Hebden - awful food and rude staff.
A 45 minute walk will bring you to the Pavilion at Bolton Abbey, where you can get light meals, afternoon tea, or simply use the loo and take a look around the gift shop.
Fabulous walks and wildlife. This is not a site for families who want or expect a playground, but if you are going there to spend time with your children walking and exploring, then its perfect.
Take a bird feeder to hang on the branches near your caravan, and you'll delight in the birds that will come - bird book and binoculars recommended.
We will be going back.
Do be warned, the archway over the road in Bolton Abbey is breathtakingly narrow - especially on your first trip, but take it slowly and calmly, and all will be well.

Our first visit to Strid Wood, being booked in since April. Busy little site. Best spot was on the top road for afternoon sun. Seemed to be a circuit for the site ducks, who just waddle around and sit between units.
Nice, clean shower and toilet block. Key and barrier key as other CC sites.
Wardens were lovely and really friendly. Feeling sorry for me as whenever I popped in the shop, was always wet. LOL
Site entrance is next to the entrance to the Bolton Abbey Estate. Lovely woodland trails, though no cycling is allowed. Walks up to Barden or down to the Strid and then follow the river down to Bolton Abbey and the stepping stones. Lovely coffee and cake at the pavilion.
Had a brilliant peaceful few days. We'll be going back.

Husband and I are members of caravan club. We had to book our long weekend in February as we could never get on previously if we left it any later.
Site is very quiet, although one night the farmer in one of the fields was out with his tractor until midnight (what can you expect it is the countryside after all!) This was the hottest weekend of the year, perfect for exploring the many walks along the river which was about 5 mins walk away,Bolton Abbey a bit further.
Toilet block was very clean and showers free.
Relief wardens were there at the time and they were very friendly as were other caravanner's we spoke to.
Nothing at all for kids to do other than fishing for tiddlers in the river. You could probably call this an adult only site.
Would recommend the Sunday lunch at The New Inn in Appletreewick.
Will be visiting again.

Super lovely clean 5* site with Friendly staff. All the pitches were lovely and the facilities were spotless and central.
Very pretty area of natural beauty.
It would be hard to beat such a lovely site.
If one had to find a fault it would be that it was some distance from a shop.
Would recommend this site to anyone.

Our first visit to Strid - very friendly staff who helped us - newbies to MH - out. All the facilities on site were kept very clean.
A peaceful site with miles of walking - 72 actually - most dog friendly.
The only downside was we only planned to stay 2 nights but extended and the nearest supermarket to restock the bar and fride was some 8 miles away in Skipton - but oh what a beautiful drive over the moors it was! (not suitable for caravans though).
We will be revisiting again - shortly!
