We chose this site during xmas 2007 as obviously earlier planning is the norm. Also we thought price wise it was very good, our 2 weeks cost £270 plus £109 for the ferry. We normally go to France but this year with kids starting school, there was no way I was paying over £1K for the holiday. We predominantly choose to have a pool on site now and this is why we were here, the orchards site which is a caravan club managed site was much more expensive and in a worse position on the island we thought.
Wightlink ferries do not carry caravans during the day sat and sun during high season so our crossing was 7.30 am sat morning, I think last sailings for caravans are about 9am. So bearing this in mind and the 12 o clock rule we phoned to see if we could get on, the wardens did their best to see if 2 pitches were free but we ended up parking on a view point car park and going to the site at 12.30 by then it was raining! But no problem really with that.
At most of these sites the wardens show you to your pitch which I am not used too, but basically this site was full, so it was nearest 2 pitches together and we were opposite our friends which was ok.
During our stay the site was always full, it was very busy, but I have to say generally as we prefer quieter sites we did not feel intimidated by the amount of people there, however having only 6 showers on site each for men and women is probably a bit on the ridiculous side at this time of year there were queues most of the time especially in the morning, my wife could be at least an hour coming back from the showers, also we were sited towards the far end and the nearest elsan and shower was a walk halfway across the site so a bit of a trek each time. The sites showers are looking dated and are really in need of ripping down and rebuilding, however they are generally clean even when its busy.
Peoples behaviour on site was generally good and we had no complaints, apart from kids playing football outside the front of the van one night at 11pm, a quick shout at them had them quieten down, but people who tent lead a slightly different lifestyle on holiday than caravanners I think its fair to say and this generally was a result of a late return on a bad weather day from a day out.
Behaviour in the pool was generally very good, my daughter wanted to go in every day and she just about did, we never had cause to rescue her from marauding teenagers, although the house in the playground was once taken over by teenagers drinking pop etc, but generally I find a quick word and most things can be dealt with, if not its off to the warden. But when your 2 year old is looking to get down a slide and a 16 year old is sat at the top of it doing nothing, they haven't got much of an argument for not moving, not unless they want to descent the slide quickly!
Information from the wardens is very good and they are usually milling around somewhere if you need them. They printed off met weather forecasts and put them on the door window every day so that was good. All in all I would say we enjoyed our holiday here and would consider going back, but next time we would like to be nearer the toilet block for the kids and also not having to wheel the elsan so far, to the left of the office are the best pitches. The site is well sheltered generally from winds which can be high, there are small trees or hedges between rows of pitches, so I guess this adds to feeling of not being so crowded as you generally can see about 10 pitches or so around you, the rest is screened off. One thing I would say on tents is that they seem to be getting very big nowadays and I have seen on the net examples of where people have been turned away, and I couldn't understand this? however having been here I now understand and some of these tents are bigger than a 26foot caravan with an full size awning up, no joke.
However a recommended site with reasonable walking distance to sandown and its beach, pier etc.

Spent two weeks at this site. Lovely site although the approach to it is a bit narrow. Owners very friendly, facilities good. It had a nice pool (although it could do with a regular sweep with a net each night to get rid of surface leaves, debris etc). Toilet and showers very dated but very clean. Good site for touring the Isle of Wight, lovely beaches, pubs, lots of places to visit. Black Gang Chine would be good for children under 10 but mine were not impressed (8 & 13)quite expensive as well. Definitely would visit this site again.

We stayed for two weeks - in fact we've only just got back and the car still needs unpacking, but then so did this can of Fosters.
We took me and the boss, our three girls aged 2 (nearly), 4 and , my teenage daughter, her best mate (both 14) and my dad (over 21).
We had my coleman folding camper, the awning with an annex and a tent.
Good well maintained site with lovely ground for pitching tents.
It's large especially in summer. Our pitch was next to the large play area which was a bit noisy until 10pm. It was sheltered as most pitches were, but some pitches were more exposed. I think these were mainly the summer tent fields, but as you may have realised, this summer was a bit wet and windy.
Facilities are clean but dated and are just about adequate. There are two toilet blocks and both are at the top end of the campsite. For some on the site the walk to the toilets could be a long way. Strangely the toilets were furthest away from the tents and nearest the caravans. Whilst some of the latter have their own facilities, none of the former do.
There is just one very busy launderette, and with only two dryers. Nowhere near enough for a site this big.
The onsite shop is small and stocks essentials including local produce -really excellent it is too. It also stocks beer including the local offerings. Try these as they are great ales Fuggle-de-Dum and Oyster stout are particularly nice.
The staff were helpful but a little taciturn and a slight tendency towards being officious. But not offensive or unhelpful.
Locally there is so much to do. This was my first return since my early teens and in those precious few years (ahem!) the place has changed for the best. Pick up a local free eating out guide, we didn't find a duff pub or restaurant. Of note are THe Fighting Cocks in Arreton on the main Newport Road, Good food, fast, with kids playground and good beer (There is a theme here), The Highdown Inn, Totland, near the Needles, for really great food and a a welcome for the kids. Beer? Can't say I noticed.Oh, yep it was also superb, The Spyglass Inn in Ventnor. Find time to find Steephill cove just outside Ventnor. No cars, so you have to walk through the botanical gardens (great) and down the steps and there it is.A hidden little community.
There is a Morrisson's very nearby in Lake and a great camping and caravanning shop opposite Morrisson's In the industrial estate.
No bad points but things that could be done better are:
1. More toilets and showers are needed
2. More laundry facilities
3. Toilet and shower upgrades are urgently needed
4. Booking process - Now I'm no expert, so I filled in the form. BUt it only asks the dimension of the main unit, and then had a rather uneccesarily bumptious camp official explain that the tent wasn't what they descibe as a pup tent and was too close to the next unit by half a metre. OK rules is rules, they suggested pitching the tent in an area clearly popular with the local moles and nettle fairies. We did find a bit of space (and thankfully some dock leaves), but at no time did they offer anymore advice than, 'you've got no choice matey'. I didn't want to short change anyone or get more than I'm entitled, but lacking any measurements of tents and attachments on the booking form I was only guided by their responses and duly booked what they suggested. Didn't ruin the holiday, just an evening of unnecessary fraughtness.
That aside there was little intrusion, and noise is kept to a minimum after 11. It's well maintained and problems dealt with quickly.
My kids rated it as their most favourite site. Playgrounds and swimming pool were good.

We had booked to stay at another site on the island initially but when we arrived at the 1st site our harts sank. Course grass at least a foot long over a rough ploughed base and on a hill !
However not to be beaten and with the good old CCC book in hand we found Adgestone camp site. Now we normally prefer the more natural, forest type of sites (within reason) rather than the formal holiday camp types with their perfectly manicured lawns, strict pitching areas and a list of rules that reads like war and peace, but this site is exceptionally good to say the least.
When we arrived the staff could not have been more helpful, quickly booking us in and then one of them jumping onto a bike to cycle ahead of us to show us the way to our pitch whilst pointing out the facilities on route.
The site is divided by natural hedgerow into smaller areas with each area having around 10 good sized pitches, some with power hook ups. We had chosen to be away from the main part of the site and had a wonderful pitch tucked away in the far corner of the site next to the sites fishing lake and backing onto a lovely wooded walk and stream.
Now the other reason that we tend to stay away from the more formal type of sites is that our tent is just over 8 meters wide and most places want to charge a double pitch fee, but we had no issues here as the standard pitch was large enough for the tent an 8 pole windbreak and the car !
So up with the tent and then off to freshen up. The toilet and shower blocks are both located towards the top end of the site near the reception area and quite close together which is a bit odd, but even though we where as far away as we could have been on the site they were only a few minutes walk away. They are very clean, although a little dated for this type of site and if like me you are over 6ft tall you will need to crouch down quite a bit to get your head wet. Apart from this, oh and don't get there too late as the hot water tended to run out by 10am, they are fine. Likewise the washing up area was more than you would normally expect with about 10 good sized sink and drainer areas within a covered room adjacent to both the shower blocks.
The site has a great play area for children which is located in the middle of the site as well as an open air pool and the very peaceful, even if just to sit next to with a good book and a glass of something, fishing lake (not a fisherman myself but understand permits where available from the main office). There is also a small site shop for your basic needs, gas bottles milk bacon etc, as well as a small cafe that does takeaway evening meals for when you don't feel like cooking or going out to eat.
The site in general has a wonderfully relaxed feeling about it and even though its geared up for familys its not noisy or too busy at all with more than enough space to get away from it all if that's what you want.
Now as far as the sites location is concerned, the island is so small you can be pretty much anywhere you want within a reasonable time but we found that the nicest parts of the island and the best places to visit tended to all be within a short drive of Adgestone with the closest beach being no more than a 10 minute drive away.
The chine at Shanklin is a must see but its best to go when its dark and all lit up, its amazing.
Shopping can be a bit hit and miss with very few well stocked local shops but there is a Morrison's super market about 2 miles from the site on the edge of the village of Lake.
All in all a great site with incredibly friendly and helpful staff, couldn't recommend it highly enough.

Spent two enjoyable weeks here in good weather . This is my third visit to this site now although the last visit was back in 2003. This site has a lovely pool area but one cant help but wonder why someone as totally butcherd the hyde rangers and other plants certainly not green fingerd people. The site on the whole was tidy but being a club site and the fees they charge the facilities are well past there prime now.T he site is also in need of a road as when the site gets wet it tends to cut up quite bad in places. The only downside in the holiday was the last day when we had to move to the car park because we had a 7.30am ferry and the wardens wouldnt open the gates before seven so be careful when booking. This site as a narrow approach road for the last hundred yards so take care on approach. Take your bikes there's a good cycle route from the site.

We have just spent a great week at this campsite. Although we have been Camping and Caravanning club members for 6 years this is the first year we have used one of their sites, and what a pleasure it was. The people we met were all helpful and friendly and kept the place spotless and tidy - the grass was cut twice even though it rained almost every day! No problems with showers as our children are very early risers so we took the opportunity to go before the rush. We were pitched next to the playing field, which is a lovely safe area for our youngsters and they also loved the playgrounds.
We have nothing bad to say about this campsite, it was quiet and relaxed and we thoroughly enjoyed our time there.
Due to the weather we didn't walk around the area as much as we hoped, but we did do one walk into Sandown. We then caught an open topped bus to Shanklin (a pricey £4.50 per adult to travel about 4 miles), spent some time on the beach and walked back along the coastal path. What a great walk - stunning views from the clifftop and some scrummy cream teas at a little cafe called Drifters about half-way along.
Other places I would recommend to eat with young children are the Caulkheads, on the outskirts of Sandown (with soft play area inside the pub); the Griffin at Godshill (a free gift with every childrens meal and a maze in the back garden) and our first choice the Horse and Groom at Ningwood for excellent food, healthy childrens meals, superb playground and football pitch outside.

This is a nice friendly site. Arrived in bright sunshine. The site is mainly grass & dirt roads that carry on from the main tarmac road. Then we had 36 hours of heavy rain & winds. The pitch we stayed on was grass & drained quite quickly. The trouble started when people drove over the 'dirt' roadway to leave & return to the site. It quickly turned into a terrible mud track that was nearly 12 inches deep in places. If the roads were re-layed with hardcore material that could put up with the wet weather, then this would help greatly. The site has a great little pool & a small shop. The shower blocks, although a little dated, were clean & plenty of hot water was always available. One other thing for caravans & motorhomes, the approach road is extremely narrow with tight turns, so care should be taken when arriving & leaving.

We were really pleased with this site once we got there! (2 adults 1 two year old 1 ten year old)
There is not clear signposting from the ferries as to the best route to approach the site and we did end up on some very small and windey roads consequently we strongly advise studying the best approach before leaving. The IOW signposts its footpaths and bridle ways better than its roads!
However once on the site it was a delight. The pitches were large and spacious the staff were more than helpful if approached on matters. The pool was brill as were the play areas. Options of collected meals were available on most nights eg curry .
The shop was poorly stocked but it was early season
The cycle way from Sandown to Newport begins virtually from the corner of the campsite .

Spent Whit week here, we all loved this site (2 adults and 2 children). Arrived in torrential rain, always fun putting up awning, fixing electrics etc. The pitch was on a hill so remember your levellers (or LARGE blocks of wood) The children's play area was great and the small football pitch was popular with young and old. The swimming pool was lovely and heated to between 20-22 degrees. Kids loved it. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Points not so good. The road to the campsite from the main road is narrow (take your time). The river at the bottom of the site runs very close to the camping area, it can flood and did when we were there. The shower blocks are very clean as you would expect from the C&C Club, but they are the oldest we have been to. The shower heads are aimed for people approx 5 ft 6inch, myself being 6ft 3inch showering was stooped. Great to have a cafe on site and Internet access, would go back again next time we visit the IoW. However travelling from the North East this may not be for some time (10 hours door to door)

Very quiet site at this time of year, staff happy and helpful. Shame we couldn't have the choice of any pitch! One toilet block was closed due to a boiler failure (seems quite common here looking at the reviews!) I think in high season the toilet blocks could be a real problem as the site has over 260 pitches yet very few showers/toilets ! I don't think I would stay at the site during high season for this very reason. Lovely pond and playing areas though! Didn't get a chance to use the pool as it wasn't heated during our visit!
