Had a wonderful weekend at this campsite.

It really is in the sticks, you're cut off from busy, electronic flooded, mobile network life and it was fantastic!

We arrived 6pm on Fridy evening and just managed to get a spot by the river. However, there were loads more spaces by the time we woke up on Saturday morning and people had packed up and left - so the comments on here about getting a good space on a Saturday morning are definitely true.

However, when we go there again (as I'm sure we will) I think we may opt for a spot on the high field - which has amazing views over the rolling hills and was extremely quiet when we drove past it.

The spots by the river are just lovely, set in a thinnish valley, steep banking on either side - on the left are the spots just wide enough for a single file of tents, facing the river and on the right, the bubbling river and another steep, lush green bank (and I'm talking cliff face covered with trees really).

When we arrived, we asked the school-mam(ish) lady in the camp shop whether there were any river side spots and she gave us a stern talking to about checking but they don't want ropes criss-crossing and you have to leave sufficient room between tents - which goes to show that they really don't want to pack 'em in there and want people to have some space. Perfect! It was £12 per night - absolute bargain!

We pitched our Boston 400 with plenty of room to spare, facing the river, we managed to grab a fire box (cast iron square on 4 squat legs) and bought ourselves a bag of logs and firelighters. There are trees lining the river side which you can use for lanterns, washing lines and other hanging usages but don't chop them down for firewood!

Its true, it is a steep hike up to the toilet block and not fun at all first thing in the morning when you're in a rush - but we're not talking 'Robin Hoods Bay' steep here - and if you're really struggling, you can easily drive up and park in the car park at the top, next to the loos, as quite a lot of people did on an evening with small children (don't blame them!)

We took our two jack russels with us and they were very welcome.

The showers were extremely powerful, loads of hot water - but they did get a bit over flowing and grubby (but it had been raining and, as they're 'wet room' types, you walk in with your boots on and change on the same floor. They were generally clean and the loos were fresh and clean too (more the ladies one than the generic ones - what is it with you guys!)

All in all, we had a perfect weekend and would recommend this place - its not a commercial site - there's no club house or entertainment - but there were lots of youngsters around having a ball, sitting by the river, with lanterns hanging from branches, watching the river go by and warming by the camp fires!

Just had an enjoyable stay here. Only our second time camping and would be more than happy to camp here again.

Think you need to arrive early for a river pitch none left when we arrived (2pm sat) but the overflow field we were on did us just fine.

Good points

Very relaxed atmosphere

Loads of emphasis about keeping the noise down etc

Loads of hot water and its free

Toilets are clean with plenty of loo rolls

Scenery is spectacular

Fire pits allowed obviously care and consideration is needed

Very much an away from it all site

Not so good

Midges - be prepared they bite !

At £6 per person per night what more can you ask for

This is a lovely campsite in a spectacular location. You can't book so well worth turning up early if you specifically want to be near the river.

There seem to be 3 areas; by the river which is the ideal esp. For families, on a shelf 100 yards up from the river or on a field in the village.

The river valley is beautiful with waterfalls, plunge pools and big rocks that make it safe and easy for children to play. Plenty of space for tents and there is only one way in and out so free from very much vehicle movement. The ground is reasonably flat and it is easy to pitch on.

The fire pits are great and help keep away the midges. On that, there are a lot of midges so do take repellent, citronella candles etc. Also make sure you keep your tent or at least the fly screen closed.

The facilities are basic and a trek from the riverside camp area - if lovely toilet and shower areas are a must then this isn't for you. They could do with modernising.

Given the facilities, it is great for a short stay but it would put me off a longer stay.

The location is great, lots of walking and beautiful Dales villages. Keld is busy with walkers as the Pennine Way and Coast to Coast both pass nearby. There are plenty of easy walking routes along the river - again ideal for children and of course an abundance of hillwalking.

As a previous reviewer said, the roads are small country lanes, single track at times, so plan your journey accordingly - it takes longer than you think, but well worth it.

Just returned from my first ever camping trip and loved it! This site is truly something special, the scenery is beautiful and camping down by the river was just bliss. Considering there is no children's play area, my 6 year old was kept amused scrambling over the rocks at the edge of the riverbank, paddling and fishing for tadpoles. I think this kept her entertained far longer than swings and a slide would have.

Having a campfire on an evening made it for me and my daughter. The owners lent us a grill to put over the firepit so we cooked sausages, toast, baked potatoes and toasted marshmallows on skewers (all can be bought from the camp shop). The £4 bag of wood we bought was huge and lasted us two nights, though the second night was a bit cold so I wished I'd had more wood left over to build a bigger fire.

After reading the other reviews I was amazed that we weren't plagued by midges, so don't let the thought of them put you off, there is times when it's midge free!

The facilities were basic but adequate. Bit of a queue for the toilets on a morning but the site was full so what do you expect?

Downside was it is a bit of a trek to the toilet uphill from the river and I wasn't prepared for quite how far into the sticks the site is so come prepared. It also takes about an hour to drive the 20 or so miles from Richmond as the country roads are awful, winding and bumpy with hidden hairpin bends. So saying that, we didn't mind the drive too much as it was very scenic.

All in all the pro's by far outweigh the cons. If you want a scenic, laid back and peaceful location away from everything so you can relax and get closer to nature then this is the site for you.

We arrived on the site at about 5pm on Friday Evening. The check in point was the shop / cafe to which we was welcomed by Barbara. She explained all the sites facilities and locations to which we could choose to pitch the tent (possibly a bit too much to take in after a 3 hour drive!.)

We then went down the very steep hill to pitch up along the riverbank. Considering that it was bank holiday, and what I believe to be the prime spot on the site, we managed to get pitched with enough room around us!.

We then went on to check the sites facilities and was very pleasantly surprised, the showers were large and very clean, toilets the same!.

THE SHOP:

We found the shop to be reasonably priced, 1pt of milk (local stuff~!) was only 50p. However the cost of alcohol was a bit costly, £1.50 per can of John Smiths and £6 for a bottle of echo falls rose wine.

The shop had all the essentials you would require.

THE LOCAL AREA:

Everywhere you want to go is quite close by, but seems to take ages to get there with the local country roads bending and mostly uphill!

To summarise it, we will definitely be back soon and can't wait.

The location is stunning, the owners really helpful, fabulous walks from the campsite, great little shop with just the right selection of items - eg marmalade, biscuits, homemade cakes, chocolates - OK well I have just given up smoking - food tastes good!

The field by the river is long and narrow allowing one row of tents only, with cars parked behind - so you have no neighbours behind or in front. The noise from the stream means that conversations from other campers are mostly muffled.

Most people had a fire at night and the atmosphere was really friendly. There are also several other fields you can camp in - no stream but lovely views - more panoramic than the river side. The walk to Muker is stunning - I had no idea this part of the world was so beautiful! Our dog loved it too - we will definitely go back.

This site is a really nice site in a fab location!

Good for walkers and those who just want to relax and do nothing.

We had 2 adults, 1 child and a dog and it only cost £12 per night. Although this site didn't have the electric hook up I did notice in the ladies toilet (old block) that they was a spare plug socket on the left at the top. I only wish I took my straighteners :)

Unfortunately we didn't get a pitch by the river however we didn't pitch to far and we had a walk down there and the dog and newphew had a lovely splash around. We also did a little walk and seen some wonderful views and waterfalls. You didn't have to go far.

I would recommend fire wood (£4 from the farmer) for the fire pits to keep the midgies away. I know people have mentioned this before however I don't think you realise how bad it actually is until you get there! I would also venture out to the Tan Hill pub. Again nice views and nice meals. The bar maids where so nice and friendly however I couldn't get the mans sense of humour.Abit of a winge really. And the dog was allowed in aswell as we got our meal.

BEST BITS -

*Location

*price of camp site - take plenty of supplies you are in the middle of nowhere and also the farm shop is quite pricey

*showers

*Tan Hill

*Farmer was a lovely man and so was the lady in the shop

Bad bits -

*Midgies

*coming home - even though the tent leaked when it rained we left it there.Lol

*quite a far walk to the toilets - uphill.

*the roads

We are going to try closer to Richmond next time however we will definitely be going back!

Just returned today from Rukins.Awsome! First time camping for my Son & Wife (I do quite a bit with my Father whilst out 'pounding' the hills), and they absolutely loved it!

Found this site by mistake on this web-site and after reading the reviews thought would give it a go!, a little concerned about not being enough to keep my Son and Wife entertained but hoped the fact you could have a fire would make up for that!

We managed to get pitched next to the river which was lovely, but light a Citronella candle even before pitching as the midges are horrendous!, these are available in the site shop! Got pitched and then the heavens opened, Had a walk up to check out the washing facilities/toilets etc, only 2 showers but extremely clean as were the toilets, the gents were of a ladies standard!

The on-site shop stocks just about everything you will require and more, plenty of food, beer, wine, insect repellants, maps, home made cakes, also serve hot drinks and hot snacks, all reasonably priced, the owners of this wonderful site are extremely nice and very helpful.

Luckily, friday and saturday evenings were dry so we managed to have a fire both nights,a big bag of logs and kindling from the shop (£4), and once sat around the fire with a glass of red as the river flows a few feet from you soon makes up for the rain through the day!

This really is a gem of a campsite, if your looking to get away from the outside world for a few days, I could not think of anywhere better to do it!, also NO mobile phone reception at all, which for myself who runs a business was absolute bliss!

Some great walking direct from the campsite too, from quite hard going to very easy gentle strolling through some of the most beautiful land in the country!

We will be going back here for years to come!

Just to recap last years review.

All as fantastic as ever, very laid back and a new shower/toilet block.

Firepits are aplenty.

Still 10/10 for us and we are going again this weekend.

£5 per night for adults and £2 per night for children.

Mosquitos may be a problem if camping on the riverside (other field are available) but I consider 2000 bites a small price to pay for such a great weekend.

Just returned from a couple of days there, after reading all the great reviews.

The site itself is great, many different levels/fields to choose from. Although the riverside pitches were full when we arrived. One big draw was the freedom to have a camp fire and to have a fire pit provided. It's no wonder they allow it, as it keeps the horrendous midges temporarily at bay. We had a fire both days from about 5pm onwards, and I still came home with 68 midge bites, so be warned! If you normally suffer with mosquito bites, you will suffer here.

The locals recommend Avon skin so soft, so maybe try that. I used a standard repellant and citronella candles, to no avail. Saying that, my friends escaped with few or none, so maybe it's just me they like!

Anyway, don't want to harp on about it, but it did spoil it somewhat for me, so forewarned and all that.

Not a great deal to do other than hike. We went for food at Keld Lodge and it very much felt like the hotel it was, not the local country pub feel I was hoping for.

A small menu of the usual pork steak/rib eye/steak and ale pie etc. Prices ranging from £9.50 upwards, which I thought was steep, but it was the only place to eat, so I guess they can charge it.

The site has a great little shop and tea room. The shop does warm snacks and has a small but well thought out grocery section and a fridge full of drinks/beers/wines etc.
