We camp every year at this site kids just love it and we have 7 of them. The site has 2 camping areas, camping by the river or up the top near the showers and shop. Farmer and his wife are very friendly happy to drop fire wood to where your pitched up. Toilets are spotless so is the shower all with clean towels and soap. Washing area with washing liquid, farm shop with most items you will need for your stay. Views are just breath taking, well worth a visit

What a find! I'd read the previous reviews and decided to visit because of the campfires. My friends were coming camping with us for the first time so we wanted somewhere really nice.
The site does take some finding right in the middle of nowhere with absolutely no mobile phone signal whatsoever.( which is sometimes a good thing)about 40 mins from Richmond along some very winding narrow lanes.
We arrived at 6.30 ish and went to reception, we were told we could pitch anywhere on the mowed areas but recommended to avoid the riverbank as the midgies would probably annoy the children. She told us to call back in the morning to pay. £ 5 per adult, £2 per child under 15 and under 5's free is extremely good value for money.
Because we had 5 children the first night and 6 the second we took their advice and pitched on the field near the toilet/ shower block. The field was relatively level with views over the surrounding hills.
While we were putting our tents up the farmer arrived on his quad and asked us if we were wanting a fire box, which he delivered along with a bag of logs and sticks. He even asked if we could manage lighting it ( 3 woman and 5 kids I think he felt sorry for us but we went prepared with firelighters lol)
I was really impressed with the toilets, they were really clean, always had loo roll, and handwash and towels. I saw them cleaned 3 times in 1 day!
The showers were free and hot and although the site was really busy on the sunday morning the queues weren't bad. Only waited 5 mins.
There are 4 toilets and 2 showers as well as a nice fitted pot wash area.
The reception/ cafe/ shop was open til 6pm but she opened up when she saw my friend approaching at 6.30 for more buns. Stock is basic but ample for what we needed.
There wasn't a playground for the children, but they didn't need 1. They spent a good couple of hours hiding amongst the long grass and the buttercups and rolling down the really huge hill. The riverside offered even more fun and the day it was midgie free we spent a good four hours plodging and exploring. Go straight through the village towards eastgill waterfalls through the gate on the right before the bridge.
The children were aged between 4 and 11 and where never once bored or complained there was nothing for them to do, an achievement for 5 boys!
Although we didn't camp at the riverside the midgies still visited us on the evening, a good insect repellent, citronella candles and the fire of course seemed to keep them at bay.
The group over the other side of the field had a guitar which they softly played until 11pm, listening to them singing and an owl in the distance whilst we sat round our campfire was a perfect end to the day.
The surrounding area is perfect for walking and manageable for the children.
On Saturday afternoon we decided to visit Hawes before the hubbies arrived.
Hawes ( 6 miles away) is a lovley village with waterfalls running through the centre. However, the journey there is definitely not for the faint hearted (me) along buttertubs pass. The road is on the very edge of a sheer drop and extremely high up. We ended up looking for an alternative route back which I must say was beautiful, across askrigg common falling back into Mucker.
Tan Hill is only 4 miles away but we didn't have time to visit.
I would definitely return to this site, hopefully some time soon.

This was our first ever camping trip, and what a start to our camping experience. This is such a lovely site. Beautiful views, walks and scenery.
We were lucky enough to find a spot right on the riverside. Apart from the midges, which never bothered me, just ate my husband to bits, it was beautiful. Ok, so it rained, and yes it got a bit muddy, but the peace and tranquillity made up for it.
Loved having real camp fires, and John bought down the firewood on his quad bike, really helpful and friendly guy.
The only other negative was that if you pitched down by the river, it was quite a trek up quite a steep hill to the toilets and showers, but who wants to camp right near the toilets anyway?
Great start, and we will be returning.

We stayed here (with our dog) during the last weekend of May (and last weekend of school holidays). We arrived at around 5pm and was told the site was nearly full. We managed to find a place to pitch, there was plenty of space between the tents even though it was full. We camped in the upper field (this is closer to the toilets). The lower field is next to the river but is an uphill walk to the toilets.
We paid £5 per person per night and we paid £4 for a bag of firewood as campfires are allowed here. The farmer brought the firewood and a fire-grate to where we were pitched on the back of his quad-bike saving us having to carry it from reception.
Reception is a tearoom/shop which sells ice-creams, soft drinks, cakes, a small range of beer / wine, charcoal, sausages, bacon and burgers and most other items for camping. The owners were really helpful, the farmer spent most of the evening fetching wood for people or showing people places to pitch. His wife seemed to work all hours in the reception even though it was supposed to shut at 6pm.
The toilets were very clean with handsoap and towels in them. The showers were superb, very powerful and hot and according to my wife, the best showers we've ever had on a campsite. The washing up facilities were also very good with dish clothes provided.
Just up the road is the excellent Keld Lodge for food and drink. It's very popular and is worth booking if you want to eat in the Restaurant(otherwise they do bar meals).
There are plenty of good walks in the area to suit all ages / abilities. May being an excellent month to visit Swaledale because the wildflower meadows are in full colour and the lambs are playing in the fields.
We will definitely be coming back here and can't recommend it enough.

Well what can I say about a fantastic place to put a tent up, very friendly very clean and tidy. Toilets very clean , shop not too far to walk and parking is very easy to get to. Price is very good for per person. My wife and I stayed on the over flow field and we had a fantastic time while we were there.

We have just returned from a three night stay at this lovely site. The beautiful weather helped, of course, but nonetheless we were very impressed with both the area and the site itself.
We were able to pitch our tent right next to the riverbank, although these spaces do go first so you may want to arrive early to secure one. The view was idyllic and the fact that we were allowed a campfire was a real plus. The atmosphere in the evenings as each group of campers sat around their fire was great.
In fact, the atmosphere on the whole site was very relaxed. One couple ran the site and the man was always around to help, and the lady made excellent bacon sandwiches in the teashop! The toilets and showers were very clean and, despite it being busy, there was rarely a queue.
I only have two small things that you may want to consider. One: the toilet and showers were up quite a steep, long path from the riverbank and, while this was fine in the day, it could be a pain at night. Secondly, bare in mind that it really is in a very quiet area and it is quite an arduous drive to reach any town. Not a problem if all you are looking for is complete relaxation!
PS. Very reasonable at £5 per person per night, we thought.

Our favourite site to date!
Toilets and the shower were clean and pleasant.
There is a shop on site.
We were in a party of 6 adults and 2 teenagers and had a fantastic time. We camped by the river and swam in it every morning before breakfast.
After a good walk in the afternoon, (and there are many to choose from) we got the open fire lit before sun down and sat round it into the early hours.
Quite a lively site, it seemed that most campers were up past midnight.
The legendary tan hill pub is only 4 miles away.
We all had a great time, many thanks to barbera the owner, very helpful and we hope to see you again soon.

What can I say?? Absolutely wonderful campsite!
But only if you like the back to nature, basic facilities and beautiful surroundings campsites. If you want all singing all dancing then don't go here.
We camped for 2 nights though were unsure due to the bad weather but this was not a problem, we were asked to pay for 2 nights and then decide later.
The owners are warm and friendly and nothing seems to be too much trouble, plus they make the best bacon butties I've tasted in ages!
The campsite facilities are very basic but extremely clean, no matter when you use them. There are 3 toilets and 1 shower - the shower is really powerful and as hot as you want it to be and there are washing up facilities.
If you camp by the riverside the trek to the toilets can be a pain in the night with young children but the beauty of the place far outweighs this inconvenience. Though there are other fields to camp on.
The weather was bad and it was already wet when we arrived and the heavens opened overnight which reduced the campsite into a mud field but we had wellies and the kids thought it was great! Though had to buy extra wellies for my 7 yr old as he thought paddling in the river meant filling your wellies! The only disappoinment (for the kids) was that the river was too high and fast because of the weather and the kids couldn't get the dinghy out but after speaking to some regulars - they assured me that the river is ok to go in when the weather is good.
Once the sun hits it does start to dry out pretty fast and as we packed the car we could see this happening.
The campfires are great and we sat by the riverside in the evenings, me sipping some local beer and the kids singing and dancing round the fire (must've been all the fresh air!)
We didn't try any of the local pubs but did drive out to some local places including Richmond, Leyburn, Reeth and Hawes. We will be trying some of the walks next time but this was a take it easy, still recovering from illness holiday.
I nearly didn't leave a review as I don't want everyone to go but this place is a true little gem and we cant wait to return!

Just come back from a weekend at this site. It was very busy so we didn't get to camp next to the river, but in compensation we got the best views to sit and look at! Another plus was that being a little higher up the midges were not quite as bad as by the river. Althought the site was unusually busy, according the owners, the toilets were clean and no queues. The owners couldn't be more helpful they even opened up the shop at 8.30pm when it closed at 6.00! One word of warning we walked to the Tan Hill Inn, what a disapointment, the staff were rude and unhelpful and the food was poor and over priced. I for one would not go back. The Keld Lodge however at the top of Keld is another matter, staff very friendly and nothing too much trouble. We had dinner there Saturday night and it was very nice. My advice is stick to this pub if you want a pleasant drink in a nice atmosphere. I would recommend this site to anyone who likes getting close to nature, if you want all mod cons then it's not for you. We also ended up spending the evening with the people next to us, sharing a bevy which just added to the whole enjoyable weekend. It reminded my why I go camping!

Campsite pros: Small site, owners always around, you can have a fire by the stream, Pub at the top of the hill, Tea shop even closer, toilets are clean and pleasant and showers are hot.
Campsite cons: Migies and other flying bugs. You will need bug spray. Toilets and showers are at the top of a steep hill not in the field.
All in all we had a pleasant trip and when there was trouble with a noisy group one night the guy came down and told em off.
