I have just spent the bank holiday weekend camping at Strangers Home Caravan & Camping Site in Manningtree, which was absolutely full, so I thought that if its popular it must be clean !
The grassed area itself is clean and tidy, as was the pub and play area, however, I found the standard of cleanliness of the facilities on this site appalling.
The toilets were only cleaned once in the 4 days I was there and even that was a quick wipe over the seat, locks don't work, basins were reasonable but the brown around the taps was awful, toilet roll was not restocked regularly, there was mould on the walls and it was a safe haven for spiders and cobwebs. Sorry to say but mopping the floors does not mean that the facilities have been cleaned.
Also there is a sign in the ladies shower block stating 'Please Leave This Area How You Wish To Find It' which is a bit difficult if it isn't clean in the first place.
The washing up area was filthy and probably has not been tended by site staff for weeks and bins were overflowing and as for the area where toilets can be emptied well, less said about that!
It is such a shame but if this site had an allocated cleaner (which they do not)to attend to these areas regularly it would be a lovely place to stay.
On the plus side, the pub food looked nice and entertainment is provided on certain days and you are quite close to woodland nature reserves and the the estuary which is perfect for the bird watcher and quiet walks

We stayed here for a week in the middle of August with our Gelert Horizon6.
It was our first visit to this part of Essex and I have to say that it is quite beautiful. Forget any preconceptions that you may have about Essex, here is just isn't true.
The nearby river estuary is an amazing place to watch wild birds and boats. The best place we found to park was on the main road just before Manningtree, which is also where the nearest supermarket is. However, the parking in Manningtree can be murder during busy periods.
Walton-on-the-Naze is about 8 miles to the South-West and has the most amazing secluded sandy beaches. Clacton-on-Sea is also worth a visit and is probably the cleanest and well presented sea side resort I have ever visited.
The campsite is small, open and flat and seems to be the back garden of the Strangers Home pub. It has the usually toilet and shower facilities, which were basic but adequate. Unfortunate they did tend to flood and queuing for showers at busy periods was very common. During the weekend there seemed to be some in the shower 24 hours a day.
There is also a covered two sink washing up area and a small shop, which is not always open. If you want to visit the shop you have to ring a bell and someone will come out of the adjacent pub.
The pub has some nice beers and serves meals too, although we didn't eat there. On the Saturday night they had a live band in the pub. They were quite good and very loud.
The only issue we had with the campsite was that some of the guests seemed to allow their children to run riot. One particular teenage girl spent much of the week destroying the fence between the pub and campsite. During the night the site was quite noisy until the early hours of the morning and we were woken by at least two drunken fights in the night.
The night time noise and lack of any presence of the owner at any time was a shame. The location is wonderful and the site itself not bad, but don't expect any peace and quiet.
In the end we left a day early as we couldn't stand the noise.

We visited this campsite for the first time last weekend and we really enjoyed it, although the one pitch was sufficient for our 9man tent I think we'll book two pitches next time so we have more room for the cars n eating outside.
The weekend we came was fully booked but the site didn't seem over crowded although there were small queues for the ladies 2 showers n 3 toilets n please take loo roll as they seem to run out by late afternoon.
We ate in the on site pub, food was nice n reasonably priced, the staff were really friendly and helpful n the site manager was always about if any problems occured.
In all, we will visit again as we liked the surroundings and all we needed for a camping trip was available, loos, shower and a on site pub!

We've just got back from a weekend visit to Strangers Home. We had a good time, our booking changed at the last minute and the staff were unfazed by that.
The campsite manager was friendly and available. The showers and toilet block seemed small but we didn't have to queue to use them, though queues for washing up were a common sight.
The site is very small but there was enough to entertain our three 12 year old boys. The only down side for us was the fact that it was noisy until late at night on both nights we were there.
On Saturday, the pub had a band on who played till well after midnight, but Friday was also very loud with other families talking loudly till late.
Our children are older so it wasn't such an issue but I don't think I'd have liked to take young children there. Overall it was a good weekend but I'm not sure if I'd rebook.

Visited this site on a spur of the moment following a recommendation. Unfortunately it was over booked and on arrival one of the 2 pitches we had been allocated had been taken by someone else. We had to squeeze to tents on to one pitch which we just managed and they only charged us for the one which was great!
Considering the site was full with approx 50 pitches it didn't feel overly busy and the children on the site were well occupied by the play area.
The pub seemed nice although we didn't eat in there. Food looked and smelt great! Local area was great with some lovely walks etc around. The campsite manager was always on hand if you needed him and rules were respected with no late night noise etc.
Only real downside was the showers / toilets. The block was ok it just wasn't big enough to cope, with regular queues for showers and sometimes loos.
Make sure you take your own loo roll early morning and at night as it kept running out! Aside from this enjoyed the weekend and would return.

Last minute decision to return for the Easter weekend as the weather was so good and the pub had a live band on.
Compared to when we went in October it was very full as they had a VW rally going on, to the daughters delight.
The building work to extend the restaurant etc, has been put off to the end of this years season.
Our stay was just as good as before, think we will continue to use this for quick weekend get always as it's only an hour from home.
As ever the staff were very friendly and helpful, if you want a quieter pitch ask to be away from the beer garden/bouncy castle, if you want late sunshine don't go on the back row near the trees.

Stayed for 4 nights at start of half term school holiday, only a few caravans and tents so not busy, good price £16 with ehu.
Facilities were good, heated shower/toilet room, 3 toilets, 2 showers with free hot water, free hairdryers, washing up area and washing machine £1 for 30mins.
Pub was pleasant, good food and prices nothing too drastic. Saturday night they had a quiz on and the locals made us feel very welcome. Must mention Matt the barman who was so friendly and accomodating for the whole of our stay, he informed us that early next year there is to be big changes to the pub and site, the restuarant is to be extended, the pub garden to move and a new shower/toilet block to be built.
We visited Harwich harbour and a little further up Dovercourt beach, we cycled into Mistley and Manningtree. If you exit the pub and turn left there is a little dead end turning that takes you down to the water, which is a nice spot. If the on site shop doesn't have what you need the village post office is a good 15 minute walk away.
The pitches as they are now looked a bit close together but Matt said that would also change, think we will return next year to see what the new layout looks like.
Looked a safe place for kids with no roads to cross, access to pub is through the back gate which takes you into the garden that has a bouncy castle and small play area.

I have stayed at this site before the new owners took it over and they have made many improvements. Last time I stayed it was in my caravan earlier this year, but due to unforseen circumstances this option is not now available so I return to my trusty tent. The facilities toilet showers [Male] is all I can comment on which are a lot better than before, I can not comment on the ladies facilities. The pitches are adequate for both tent and caravan. I used to live in this area but moved several years ago and return to visit as often as possible. The shop is an improvement and the products suitable for camping.
There are ample places to walk or cycle to. Constable country is close by, by car or bus I would thoroughly recommend this site for a week-end or longer stay for single camper or family. It is also the nearest site to the port of Harwich [Parkestone Quay] for travellers going further in land or abroad.

Stayed 2 nights Friday though to Sunday in motorhome.
Nice level pitches quite close together but around standard size most with elec hookup. Water standpipe nice easy to get to which isnt always the case on sites when touring with motorhome.
Toilets seemed clean and although only 2 showers were never busy no fees for showers and were very good none of the push button fixed temperature variety here.
Grey water emptying easy as drain in ground (no lifting involved) chemical toilet ok but tap to wash it all away could do with being stronger flow to make job quicker and easier not a pleasant job at best of time!
Also very good small shop on site which seems to be open all the time don't worry if you forgot something bound to have it in here.
Having pub on site was great, the food wasn't bad and prices reasonable. Childerns play area seemed popular and there were lots of children on site.
Very good area to stay for walking and exploring the estuary. We mountain biked along the river all the way to Ramsey visiting Wrabness on the way. Also for those with a boat there is a free launching area into the river at the bottom of Stour lane which is very close to the camp site. Seemed popular with those in the know.
The only minus point was other noisy campers probably because this site allows large groups, visitors, young same sex parties and it has a pub on site. However don't let this put you off really I mean this its a good site, either drown out their noise with your own inside your unit so you cant hear it, make lots of noise yourself or go to the pub and by the time you emerge you won't care.

A great little site - no frills but perfectly adequate.
The pitches seem quite close together (to our inexperienced eyes) and there was little spare room for our children to play on the camping field, but the pub beer garden was open all day with a climbing frame and bouncy castle.
If you intend to eat at the pub it's worth ringing to check as the evening we arrived the kitchen was closing early for a band. The food was good - pretty standard pub fare and not too expensive.
The toilets and showers were modern but on the Sunday morning there was no loo roll, hand soap or handtowels and the floor and counter tops were sodden and grubby. Of course, this is more to do with other campers but it does show the toilets are not inspected/cleaned very often.
Two washing up sinks and a pay washing machine are also provided.
