We stayed here for the Bank Holiday weekend with friends in another campervan. Having stayed last year (original review below) the site has certainly seen a bit of a tidy up and the criticisms that I made last year have been addressed pretty well by the new management.
The showers and toilets have been cleaned out and retiled, a good lick of paint everywhere and there's now a very small on site shop which stocks all your basic needs - including your vital sausages and bacon & eggs; emergency toilet roll, breakfast cereals, milk etc.
The pub now serves a variety of local real ales (Adnams & Harwich Town Brewery) and a range of meals. The kids play area and bouncy castle (free but unsupervised) meant the kids from our two families had plenty to do.
The site was quite busy but that didn't intrude too much on your privacy, it wasn't noisy and was very relaxed for our stay and even though the weather was. Well, indifferent. We had a great time.
The detailed review by 'Essexlion' below is very accurate and well worth a read and if it helps make your mind up, we're definitely going back with other friends in the summer holidays!

We choose this site for a number of reasons our first time camping alone as a family, a new tent and the time of year. It's only 5 miles from our home so meant we had a failsafe if things didn't go right (ie more warm clothes or bedding). Plus it ticked all the other boxes for us, electric hook-up, toilet and shower facilities', children's playground (in fact when we showed our little ones the website pictures they said it was the coolest playground ever!) and the bonus of an on-site pub. A mixture of tents and caravan users, also had no problems with commercial van owners.
The site is under new management and from talking to some regulars (most of whom seemed to be local as well) it has gone through a lot of changes recently. They showers and toilet blocks have been spruced up, they remind of shower / toilets at public swimming baths.
Being able to arrive early was great for us. This meant we could drop the kids off at school - shoot over to the site and set up. After getting the boys from school and me having to do an unexpected football coaching session at a nearby school, we got back to the site about 5 o'clock.
The boys where desperate to try out the new playground, so we decided to walk over to the pub have a drink in the beer garden and let the boys have their dinner there. Kids meals were £3.75, the usual Chicken Nugget and Chips etc, adult meals where around about £7.00 there is a good choice and they have daily specials. To give you an idea an price of drinks, a pint of lager, large red wine and 3 soft drinks came to £10.20. The pub (which also doubles as reception and place to go if you have problems) had also provided a bouncy castle for the kids (and adults) over the weekend and they quickly made friends.
The site also has its own little store, (literally a store cupboard turned into a store), which provides all the essentials you will need - you good certainly arrive with no food and stock up for the weekend at the store. You can also order the papers there and if no one is manning the store you only have to ring a bell and someone from the pub (usually Sam) will come and open up for you. They seem to be linked to the local village store and post office in Bradfield, which is a bit too far to walk, but only a 2 minute drive.
Obviously nothing was too much trouble for them, some of the children had brought water guns in the store, when my 3 went to buy some, they had run out but told them to come back in 10 minutes while they went up the road to get some more. The washing up area, also has a washing machine.
Living in the area, we didn't do too much in travelling about, partly due to the weather this weekend and partly due to us knowing the area. To help those who are planning a trip, within the area there are some nice walks to the fore-shore at Bradfield, Wrabness, the Stour Valley nature reserve and the towns of Harwich, Manningtree, Colchester and Ipswich are all easily reachable by car or public transport, as well as the Dedham Vale and Constable country.
All in all we had a good weekend. The new management at Strangers Home are doing their best to make the site a welcoming place and although the site had problems with the electrics tripping during the rain we had on Sunday and they put black plastic bags over all the electric points, which seemed to solve the problem.

Just back from four days at the strangers. Under new management now had a wonderful time Weather was very kind to us. Showers refurbished and a nice cut grass field. Stranger’s pub and people really really nice and the food was excellent. Now recently started entertainment at the weekends at the pub these consist of groups and karaoke and also pub quiz’s. Definitely worth a visit.

Not a bad site - quite small nice and clean tidy -had a lovely shower. A few problems with minor power cuts on electric hook up - the man said they were in the process of renewing electrics as new management.
Nice food in the pub - can take children in until 9pm - nice small park there - generally good for a couple of days break or a base to tour around etc. Liked the shop - ring the bell and they open (very long walk to local shop) - good weekend had by myself and granddaugther.

A functional campsite, it does what it says on the tin - it's a site you camp at! Basic but comfortable it has capacity for a mix of tents & caravans with or without hook-up and is situated in a quiet village near the Stour river.
The pub at the rear of the site has a play area for children and appears to have a good selection of bands, but none were there when we were - nor was any real ale which was a bit of a disappointment!
Toilets and showers were fairly basic, and to be honest needed a good clean and refurbishment, but that said, they were working; unfortunately the lights across the Gents facilities weren't and were awaiting repair.
Very well located for arrivals or departures via the port of Harwich, the quiet roads leading to the site mean that there is a mix of international campers, including the almost compulsory Dutch cycle tourers for this part of the coast!
For a one night stay, a pretty good experience over all.

Simple field campsite at the rear of a pub, attracting a mix of tents, campervans and caravans, quite a few from Germany and the Netherlands which gave it a nice international feel. Campsite is in a small village with a small shop for basic provisions. The pub is nicely fitted out and does food, including breakfast and standard selection of mainstream lagers/beers. There is also another pub in the village. We arrived on a Friday night where a group of singers were belting out folk music - we enjoyed it but if your tent was close by and you were aiming for an early night, it may not have been for you. We would recommend taking a pitch not too close to the pub garden if you prefer absolute peace and quiet.
Manager friendly and relaxed. Three loos and three hot showers in the ladies, also a baby changing station. Sinks and washing up area were a bit grubby and I'm told the gents was also rather dark and dank. A quick wipe/hose over would have made it all fine.
There's enough field for kids to play ball games. Also a recreation ground practically opposite the site if they need more space for running around. The pub garden also has a large wendy house/climbing structure to keep small ones happy.
Surrounding countryside is good for cycling as roads are flat (if a little windy as is typical of the area!). Mistley Towers is a short cycle/car ride away.
We are looking to visit the area again next year and will return to this campsite.

This site is in a field out the back of the Strangers Home Inn in the attractive village of Bradfield.
I stayed there on a Monday night, and was a little disappointed to find that the pub was not open that night. However, the Village Maid pub just down the road more than made up for that, serving excellent food & ales.
The facilities are fairly basic, but showers are free so they are adequate.
All in all a reasonable place to stay - but would have been better if the Strangers Home Inn had been open.

I have camped on this site it is the nearest to the port of Parkestone that accepts tents, caravans and camper vans. The showers are excellent, there is shopping close by and you also have Manningtree, Dovercourt and Harwich, Colchester and Dedham all historic areas a short drive away. The campsite has several electric hookups and accepts pets. I will be returning to this site again this year.
