Well, How can I start, This was a real find. My husband had booked this as a surprise for me and I wasn't disappointed. When we arrived we were met by a very lovely lady. She was so welcoming so that was a great start.
We set up the caravan and had a walk around, although there wasn't much for young children this didn't bother our 3yr old at all, she was happy that there were ducks there and anyway a holiday is what you make of it.
The toilet block was being completed when we got there and although there was only one shower for ladies / men it wasn't a problem, the toilets were kept very clean and tidy, even the little touches of handwash & hand cream were very nice.
Now the best bit, we arrived on the thursday and decided we would have an early night and save ourselves for new years night, and I have to say just being in the caravan and listening to the bands playing was fabulous, trouble is I couldn't get to sleep cos my feet were tapping along. Great.
New years night was out of this world, although it was busy,it wasn't overcrowded, there was food on and that was great, really tasty, although they don't cater for children's meals, we just shared one. The food was really lovely and well worth the money. Everyone was so nice, which is a bonus cos it makes your holiday so much nicer.
The atmosphere was brilliant and all the staff was so very nice.I have to say it was the best new years night I have ever had. Although Country& Western is not to everyone's taste, there was a variety of music played by the bands.
The whole experience was lovely and I am already planning our next visit there. Although it was winter it was still a very enjoyable site. The site is very handy for Lytham and blackpool, but I would have just been as happy to stay on site. Hats of to all at this site and we look forward to staying there again very soon.

On arrival there was reasonable space to find a pitch, decided to pitch near the fishing pond having driven around to pick a spot. Facilities ok, although could do with updating.
We didn't as had been mentioned by other reviewers find the music loud and we were not disturbed in the early hours. Overall we found the site adequate, the one addition to this is that we would not go again when the weather was inclement, drainage for rain water was an issue, we awoke on Sunday morning to find that the tent was sat in the middle of a large puddle (as was most of the other campers)the flat areas were you can pitch your tents are in depressions (80% of grassed areas under water).
Would I go again Yes but only in the dryer months

We visited this site in July for a Friday and Saturday night. 6 adults 2 young kids 1 toddler 1 6 week old baby. The previous 3 reviews pretty much sum up this site. On arrival I wasn't too impressed - there didn't seem to be an obvious space for tents apart from right next to one of the lakes which having the toddler with us was not ideal. We spoke with the owner and he said pitch behind the bar / restaurant. We did this and it was a decent enough spot (although the trees were rotten right above us- but luckily we had decent weather). The owner later asked us to move our cars because he later explained we were basically pitched in the beer garden !
Toilets were basic but they were as clean as you can get when you consider they are in an old toilet block. It didn't bother any of our party.
The 'rodeo' bar was something we hadnt expected and whilst it was open until 1.00am ish, a few of us were still up anyway so we didn't see it as a problem. One think that deserves mentioning is that the people in the bar / and on site, and also the owners were all very very friendly and whilst the cowboy scene may not be my scene personally, fair play to them because they enjoyed themselves and also took it seriously with dressing up etc.
We had a nice day on lytham st annes beach - really nice and not too far.
Camp fires were allowed which is always a bonus in our opinion.
There isnt much for the kids to do unless you make your own entertainment up.
All in all we had a decent weekend even though initially I wasn't too impressed. Having read the other reviews, it seems that tents are a recent addition to the site and therefore they may need a bit longer to accomodate them more.
Would I go again? Yes I would. Although there are other 'better' sites around, this site does have an interesting and unique atmosphere and is worth a visit.

I stayed at Great Birchwood for 2 nights in August 2011. When we first arrived we were shocked to see that Great Birchwood was run down. We considered leaving but decided it wouldn't be so bad. We picked a plot with hook up that was close to the main buildings.
The toilets weren't very clean and the showers were cold. We also found that there was only toilet paper in the morning, so we bought our own for the evening. The pond was nice and there was lots of exploring to do. In our group was 3 adults and 8 children, so the space benefited us. Even though the playground facilities were poor we played manhunt and such games in the woods in the evening.
In the evenings there was loud folk music in the bar, even though we didn't use the entertainment facilities, we still enjoyed the music. Lots of people came dressed as cowboys, and took it very seriously. We had pictures with the cowboys and found it very entertaining!
And lastly, we went to the car boot on the Sunday morning which was brilliant and obviously very busy and popular. So, even though this place is very run down, its worth a visit. We had a laugh and it was one of the funniest camping weekends I've ever been on! Go if your up for anything and a laugh! Great Birchwood is definitely one of the strangest places I've ever been!

Grass very stoney. Difficult to pitch tent.
Toilets a bit grotty, but were told these are being knocked down in the future. They do have a few portable toilets and showers next to the old ones. Take some loo roll as they run out by early afternoon.
2 sinks for washing up pots.
Small grassy area for kids with a slide and a swing. Not too big site so kids can roam free.
Close to Lytham and Blackpool.
Major down point is that people going to the on site bar are very loud after closing time until very early in the morning. More of an adult site than a kid friendly site.

After booking this site myself and son (7) were quite excited about this site, unfortunately on arrival we found it to be very run down, at the entrance there was a very large ad for the carboot sale but nothing to point us in the direction of the booking office. After driving around (didn't take long as it is very small) we found a tiny sign on the edge of one of the statics, knocked on the door and finally got an answer. We were directed to what can only be described as a roughly grassed over carpark with the only decent space was by the toilets and bins. The toilets are very run down, no toilet roll wet flooring, no way would I let my son go on his own to these. The showers were dirty with cracked bases and tiny. The worst for myself was outside the toilets on the grass was used toilet roll. Thankfully we hadnt pitched before we saw all this so we literally drove off.

This was my first holiday in a Caravan. The site is very large and very cheap. We had a caravan, a tent, 5 adults, 2 children and 2 dogs but it only cost £81 for 3 nights.
Car boot sale every Sunday. Loads of bargains there even though we had a bit of a lie in. Blackpool is close by and we got most of our food from there.
Down side is facilities are rather basic. The ladies toilets were disgusting. 2 of the toilets were unusable. One due to a broken seat and the other was covered in faeces for 2 days. They did clean the toilet on the day we left. Toilet roll is in short supply so I ended up taking my own loo roll in the toilet with me. Showers not good either. My friend had to keep hold of the shower tap to get water. The whole toilet/shower block needs a major refurbishment.
There was a lake for fishing but £10 per person per day is rather expensive. The playground was a disappointment. All the equipment was on one plastic tree.
Not bad for a few nights though especially at that price.

I had one night on this site planning to have two though it was very noisy even at 3 o`clock in the morning so after one night we found a different site. There is a pub on the site that we didn`t get chance to go to it and it played music till midnight. You aren`t allowed to park your car next to your tent if you go in the woods. The toilet block wasn`t very clean. We really like having fires so it fitted in that way with us though the weather was too bad to have one.

The site is very basic. It has no playgrounds or other designated areas for children to play. There are 3 lakes/ponds on site as well, which are easily entered and not fenced off. None of the 4 cubicles in the Gents have any locks and they are very narrow. One was permanently out of order. The floors were wet and dirty. Often has no toilet roll available. One of the toilet pans leaks when you sit on it. The girl that cleans the toilet block is very friendly and does a great job, it's just that it seems an impossible job to keep them clean. There is a big need for additional toilet block(s) and the existing one to be refurbished.
All the staff on site seem to be part of the family that own it and they are some of the nicest people you could ever meet. They are so polite and friendly. On site there is a Cowboy themed bar and restaurant. It is only open Friday evenings, Saturday afternoon till midnight (under 16's to be out by 10) and until 6 on a Sunday evening.
There is a McDonalds about 300 yards down the road and a village with a couple of shops less than a mile away. You seem to be half way between Preston and Blackpool, 20mins to each. Brilliant and very Large Matalan, Asda and Tesco all in Blackpool.
This all makes the site an ideal base for a cheap night. If you are happy to sit and relax or fish in one of the ponds then you will be quite Happy on the site during the day. Nearly forgot to mention the large Car Boot sale they hold every Sunday. Cars and people start arriving at 7am (very noisy). They are flattening more land around 1 of the ponds to accommodate more tents. Apparently, they are also going to be installing a playpark soon. We would definitely go back and use the site, a lot of this is because the owners and staff are all so nice. It's also an ideal base for all we need.

I rang 1 week prior to our visit, I was told my pitch was booked and there would be plenty of room. We were only staying for 1 night. We arrived on Sat afternoon there was no instructions on where to go and what to do when you arrive at the site. I had to ring them from my car, to be told just go and find myself a pitch and someone would be round. I asked where the tent field was as all I could see were caravans.
A guy pulled up next to me who works there and he said we could either pitch in the forest ! which was full of dead trees (my other half is a tree surgeon) and was unhappy at the state of the trees and if it had been a windy day!
Or the other pitch was to the left of the road when you drive in, this was crammed full of tents and I mean crammed we drove around looking for a pitch expecting to find one as we had booked and there were no spaces other than 1 which was crammed in between these two tents. So we got out our ground sheet and found the ground all bogged and couldn't get the tents pegs in the ground as it was full of stones. And not big enough for our tent.
This was a nightmare with 3 kids 10,8 and 1yr and a 1yr old bull dog this was quite stressful.
I would've thought you would have been shown to a pitch especially after booking on this site. The man was very unhelpful so we left therefore we were 200 mile away from home and homeless ha ha ha
