The site is the neatest one I have stayed at, lovely soft grass to pitch your tent on and a gravelled area very close by to park. Tents and caravans seemed to have the same amount of space allocated, so we got lots of personal space. The toilets and showers are clean and there's a washing up area outside. And yes, driving in you pass some great topiaries!.
It says it is an adult only site on the pamphlet we were given but we went with children not having known in advance, and we did have the only children there. There are also signs saying no ball games making this more of an adult friendly place with lots of little dogs!
We were parked under a street light which I found a bit bright and there was a party at the nearby stables on our second night which was loud. Don't know if that happens often.
There was nothing obvious to do within walking but Rutland waters were a very short distance in the car.

The only problem I had was getting anyone to answer the phone when trying to book.I ended up just going not knowing if there was any room on site.
Ideal for Rutland water visits.
Toilet block and showers very clean and tidy, water if anything too hot but that's being picky!
Staff were friendly and helpful.
I guess the site could do with a tidy up but if your just sleeping there you don't have look at it!

The site is very nice and well kept. Toilets and showers where very clean and very warm. There was constant hot water for showers and washing up area. Very peaceful site and lots to do in the area.
Melton Mobary worth a visit and also Rutland water which is about 3 miles away and excellent facilities there, best thing was you buy one ticket that can be used in other main carparks around the lake.
I read the other reviews and was unsure what we would get and I have to say yes it does need a little more attention than other sites I have been to but for the price you pay you cannot expect the ritz.
I would thoroughly recommend the site and we will definitely make it a choice for the future when we are in that neck of the woods again.

Great location near Rutland Water. Two pubs within walking distance. Entrance very grand, shared with park homes.
Campsite was OK but a bit unkempt. There was lots of bits of rubbish around the edge of the site and a decrepit vehicle in the corner. About a third of the pitches were taken by caravans left for the season. All this would have been about OK if the showers had worked properly. They look nice but have nowhere to put your clothes etc. Securely while in the shower and hardly any water at all came out of the showerhead. Just about unusable, really. Shame.

Management response: Please note this site has been in new ownership from late 2014.
My wife and I personally live on Louisa Alice and have worked tiresomely through the winter months to bring the surroundings up to the standard we have always set throughout our near 20 years as camp site owners.
The previous owners were a larger group that unfortunately didn't have the time to invest, and as such certain reviews reflect that.
Please don't be put off by this, as we have worked tremendously hard for you to enjoy your experience at the newly opened Louisa Alice Camp Site. |

We have been coming to this site for the whole of the summer months since 2007 and since the owners have been maintaining the site, probably the last 4 years, the site has a 'cared for look' - the grass is kept short and very neat and the toilets and showers are very clean and smell lovely (ladies).
The drive could do with maintaining better (very bad when it rains )
But there is no better place when the sun is shining on a warm day - especially when it is only adults on site!
They work very hard and are very friendly and welcoming - hope this does continue -would hate site to deteriorate.
Look forward to many more summers there.

I suppose in hindsight it may have been wrong of us to show disappointment when we arrived, it seemed to upset them and get us off on the wrong foot right from the start. After all, booking 8 pitches weeks in advance for a birthday celebration weekend might lead to the expectation of all of us being together, but maybe we shouldn't have taken it for granted. All the same we were still a little surprised to be told to pitch where we could find a space, especially as the site was half empty. Now this is the only campsite I have come across with a "Keep off the grass" notice, but we didn't spot this before we had asked if we could use the grass area next to the two pitches we found together, which seemed to upset them even more. Even worse, when we put 3 campers on a hardstanding that had plenty of room for them (with a 4-way hookup in the corner, not working though), we were roundly berated for breaking the rule of only two campers to a pitch. Of course most other campsites would have been glad of this, as it would have left them an extra pitch to sell, on the hottest weekend of the year in the August holidays, but this site was not full (I wonder why). One reason we booked was that the site was adults only. I didn't realise that this meant we shouldn't have taken our children, obviously 30 does not count as being an adult here. It is a pity that drinking beer outside is frowned upon, as it is one of the things we go camping for, especially when it is someone's birthday. The toilets are quite nice, pity they are not cleaned regularly, or the rubbish trucks emptied, and you need a torch to visit the disabled toilet at night as the light doesn't seem to work. Still, it is in a lovely location, if you can find it - there are no signs on the road and we drove past what appeared to be a building site entrance before we found it. There is some semblance of customer relations, though - attempts to complain are met with the response "If you don't like it you can have your money back and go". Pretty safe offer after we'd had a couple of beers - none of was able to drive. If we had been we would have gone.

Just returned from a lovely weekend at Rankborough Hall - our a first camping trip so I have no comparisons. I thought the facilities were great, the site was really well maintained and the toilet and showers were great - really warm and clean. The site was quite busy but we able to find a pitch a little set back from the other vans. The best thing about this site is the friendliness of the staff in the office and the shop - fresh bread and local eggs available in the morning and papers which should be ordered in advance. I'd recommend this site to people who want a relaxing weekend, with no hassles.

This was a great location, with lovely facilities - I think the toilet and shower block is probably the nicest that I have ever been - and I have seen a few :o) Clean, well kept site, with friendly staff. The weather was pretty harsh as it rained for the weekend but me and my little friend still had lots of fun.

The driveway leading to the site was very impressive and unlike any other campsite we've been to (loved the topiary!) Ranksborough was a small and very friendly site with a well stocked shop (you must try the home baked cakes!). The showers weren't working when we went but the shower/toilet block was the cleanest we've ever seen. Be warned, if you visit the site in a tent, make sure you pitch in the middle of the site, otherwise your not guaranteed to get your tent pegs in! Not sure why we were charged for taking a dog as there are no doggy facilities on site but hey ho, it was a great place!

We visited this campsite in July after reading about it on this website. What can I say, the toilet and showers were spotless and hot. The two pubs in the village were ok but not great if you like your real ales. The only complaints we had were that the maintenance of the site was poor, at one end of the site was a large mound of rubbish which had been burnt and left. There were weeds growing in the picnic area. The only other thing was the price they charge for dogs £2.35 per dog per night and not even a dog waste bin on site!
