We used this site for a one night stop-over on our way to Western Brittany. It was ideal for us being approximately halfway between Calais and our site in Western Brittany.
The booking was made over the internet and our enquiries and booking were handled very quickly and efficiently. It couldn't have been smoother!
We arrived mid-afternoon and went to Reception where we were met by a staff member. He gave us such a friendly welcome and walked us to our pitch (my husband followed behind with the caravan whilst I walked and chatted with Peter)! On the way to the pitch he gave me all the information I would need to know for our stay ie Where to take take rubbish, about the local village, the times their little bar was open etc.
The pitches are really superb. You have plenty of space (and we have a twin-axle caravan towed with a Mitsubishi Shogun). Whilst the site wasn't full, there were approximately 30-40 pitches taken, although with the quietness you would never have realised.
Once set up we decided to eat at the site's little bar for dinner that night - we were too tired to shop and cook. The bar is open each evening from 7pm-9pm (although closing is at the owner's discretion). The bar is in an old stone outbuilding next to the main house and you can sit outside on the patio area or there is a small bar area in which you can sit. We chose to sit outside as the weather was lovely. Whilst the menu is limited, the food was superb. We had a most lovely evening sitting out drinking red wine and chatting. On the way back to our caravan we spoke with a staff member to say what a lovely evening we'd had and we wished we were staying longer. She was a lovely lady and very easy to talk to.
The site has a small park area for children, a games room with pool table, board games etc., its own fishing lake and its own bar.
Unfortunately can't really comment on anything else as we left the next morning. But all in all this is really a lovely site and we would highly recommend it - if only we'd stayed a bit longer!

We decided to break our journey up from Vendee to Caen and telephoned this site to book an overnight stay. (The site is about 45 min drive from the port.)
The owners were extremely helpful and when we arrived gave us plenty of information on the site and surrounding area.
The site has a small fishing pond that my son (and me !) enjoyed. It is heavily stocked and even we were able to catch the fish. We caught about 10, but put them all back.
The snug bar (restaurant) serves basic food and is very enjoyable. The owners go out of their way to ensure your needs are catered for, everything is cooked perfectly and drinks served in proper tall french style glass.
There is a small play area for kids with swings, slide and some tyres and plently of grass to have a kick about.
All pitches are relatively level and appear to be quite generous in size. I had no problem with manoeuvering a twin axle onto/off the pitch.
There is also a storage facility at the end of the site where I noticed 20+ UK caravans stored.
I would thoroughly recommend this site to anyone, I'm just a bit disappointed we couldn't stay longer.
The only letdown is that there is not too much for teenagers in the surrounding area but in saying that we didn't have a great deal of time to look around, so I may be wrong.
Next time I'm down in the Caen area I will definitely be staying here.
Congratulations to the owners for making our short stay so enjoyable.

As said before this is a lovely spacious site with plenty of private and well maintained pitches. We spent two nights here on the way down to the Vendee (it is only 45 mins from Caen) and had a very peaceful start to our break.
The pitches themselves are generally level and separated by various bushes, we had hydrangeas and red currants on our pitch which was lovely. There is some traffic noise but nothing to worry about. It certainly did not impede our stay. On very hot days you could the hear the local road (certainly not the motorway) but I think you'd struggle to find a site that doesn't have any noise!
Each camping area had a water section in the middle and electric hookups within easy reach.
The Irish owners are great fun and provide a bread and croissant ordering service in the morning and a bar and snack bar in the evening. The bar area has a very olde worlde atmosphere and musicians are encouraged, didn't hear anyone playing whilst we were there. The site was mainly occupied by British and Dutch people.
There is a lovely bbq area over looking the lake and a small children's playground including a dip to throw tractor tyres down, great fun! We camped with our two year old and he had a lovely time in the park but we did have to watch that he didn't run towards the lake in the evenings (but then that's probably my fault for showing him the fish!)
St Martin des Besaces doesn't have a great deal going on, but the owners ensure you are fully briefed about good local restaurants and their is the 1944 museum in the village too.
If you are looking for info about the 1944 landings then the owner is very knowledgeable and can provide you with enough places to visit for a week!
We will definitely use this site again.

We used this site a an overnighter on our way down the French coast and again on our return journey due to its easy straight forward access from the motorway - We just wish we had booked to stay longer to enable us to explore the local area. The site is so clean and tidy with beautiful views across the valley our pitch was 'marked out' with shrubs in flower - we had two teenage boys with us who soon settled down in the snug on the internet (we took a laptop WIFI rate very good) after enjoying their light tea Pizza / Quiche Salad and Chips followed by 'Irish Kiss' ice cream.
The owners made us more than welcome and really accommodating with our return pitch already reserved from our outward journey so it would be available what ever time we made it back.
Showers may get a little congested if the site was full of tents but mainly caravans when we were there with their own facilities. There is a children's play area away from the roads.
Certainly visit again.

We stayed here for 2 overnight stops between Calais and Brittany. Location is just off the motorway and arrived straight there by putting location into Sat Nav via Google maps. Well kept site, large pitches with hedges and bushes dividing. Limited snack menu and bar (only open from 7pm so if you arrive early you need to make sure you are stocked up). Odd shaped shower cubicles but both these and the toilets kept clean and tidy. Showers hot and you don't need to keep your finger on the button to make them work!. Toilets always had paper which is unusual for France. Wifi connection available in the snug (charge). Children,s play area and plenty of spaces to walk about. In the town we found a local bar / betting shop, small supermarket, 2 butchers and a few other shops all within easy walking distance. One thing to note is that the restaurants and museum in the town appear to be closed on a Tuesday. Ideal place for a stop off if you don't want to drive the whole distance in one go.

Can't recommend this site highly enough. The owners could not do enough for us and made the three of us very very welcome. The site is well laid out in a very peaceful setting with its own lake and bar which also serves food. If you are looking for a relaxing time then this place suits but if you are after lots of site entertainment then you might be better somewhere else. It suited us looking for a quiet relaxing holiday There is lots to see in the area with the beaches less then an hour away. The American Memorial is a must. Pitch size is plenty and nicely laid out. Toilets are near. Very easy access from the A84 and subsequent main road and easy to find.
Local village with pubs and shops within walking distance.

Excellent well maintained site with good access to all pitches even with larger outfits. On site snack bar and Bar with draught lager. Amenities include children's play area with fort, swings etc and its own very well stocked fishing pond/small lake. Sanitary block is small but very clean, just slightly too small for the number of pitches in high season. Excellent for D Day beaches and all of the varied museums nearby. Village has its own museum and panorama showing progress of the battle for St Martin Des Besaces.

Site is very well maintained, grassed pitches which are cut to lawn standards with hedge dividers. Pitches are of reasonable size for caravans up to twin axles, and access to all pitches seems possible. Site offers a bar, and a limited snack menu. Toilet blocks are however very limited. Though well maintained and clean, they are woefully small and supplemented by a rental unit. Toilets are little more than CL standard, and not sufficient for a 50 pitch site. The site is very convenient from the A84, but suffers from traffic noise from the autoroute, which becomes obvious at night. There is much to see in the surrounding areas, D -Day beaches, the Swiss Normande, and parc de la Souleuvre which is an adventure parc with spectacular bungee jumping, and zip slides.
