This was our familys 1st time camping, and we loved it! I arrived alone with my 2 young children (7 and nearly 2) and Arthur was extremely helpful, he's such a hardworking, lovely man and he isn't in the business for the money, he just wants people to enjoy themselves and the whole experience! We had an action packed 6 days and 5 nights and cant wait to go back, my friend and her 3 children arrived on the 3rd day and stayed in a pod which is also a really great experience and so cheap too! Arthur even let us hire an extra pod on a day that was really wet so all the kids could play in there and not get wet!

People have mentioned that there is only 2 toilets per gender,a shower each and 1 place to wash up, but I went early in the morning to wash so I never had to queue and in the evening its really not to bad as its so well lit, you can also meet people by chatting to them in the queue! Also its very clean and the farm itself provides the loo roll!

I could go on and on about how much fun we've had, the visitors centre, the walks, the campfires, the pony trecks(my daughter did 2!) and just going back to basics. Cant wait to go back! I highly recommend EVERYONE goes at least once to grizedale as its such a fantastic experience, especially with kids!

Went to this site off the back of the reviews from ukcampsite and was not disappointed. Arthur was possibly the most helpful and kind person I have ever met and bent over backwards to make sure everyone was ok.

The site is fantastic with lots of areas for the kids to play and loads of walks in the area. If you want the club house, electric etc then this place is not for you. Everything is on the basic side and a bit of a trek to the loos but spotlessly clean at all times. My only gripe is that there are no water points on the field itself.

Considering the rain we had, it was great especially as we managed to pitch under a tree. I have recommended Bowkerstead farm to loads of friends and am going up there again next week - I can't wait!

We stayed in one of the Pods situated in the woods. And we loved it!

The area is beautiful, full of Walks and great for Mountain biking. Windemere has a nice little town (split in two) and a great lake, and Ambleside is just lovely (lots of pubs, outdoor shops)

The owner of the site is great, really helpful and delivered our wood for our camp fire up to our pod on his quad. The facilities were just o.K but were very clean.

Men had two showers, and I 'think' 1 urinal and 1 loo?! There is also a washing up area with incredibly hot water

Its one of those sites that you want to keep to your self and not tell any one about it! we loved it and want to go back soon.

Just returned from grizedale forest. What a great guy Arthur is. Where else can you sit out at night and have a (real) fire with logs delivered to your tent. We where two families with kids aged from five to thirteen and what a great time we had. The visitor centre is only 1.5 miles away with the grizedale forest walk which we did. Views are amazing.
There is plenty to do in this area. A pub just down the road from the campsite. There were all age groups on this site with couples pitched in the woods and families in the main field. There is a noise restriction at 12.30am but if you sit out talking quietly then Arthur doesn't mind.
The facilities are clean but limited as only two showers and two toilets with one washing up room and no separate drinking water tap had to queue but Arthur went out of his way to help by filing water buts for people queuing and let you use the sink in his house. He also let the kids feed the lambs and took them round his farm.

What a fantastic campsite! We have just returned from a couple of days at Bowkerstead Farm and it was superb. This is the first season that Arthur has had 'pods' - a wooden tent! It was our daughters first introduction to camping so we went for the safe option of a pod, which was set up in the wooded area of the site. The weather was great which helps but we really enjoyed our time on this old school campsite!

It is all fairly laid back, shower and toilet blocks are functional (you may have to get in line when the site is busy) and there is plenty of space for the kids to roam and play. It's on a farm so you can check out the animals as well!

Arthur is a great host and zips around on his quad bike making sure everyone is happy and drops off your fire wood in the early evening just in time to get the camp fire going to roast your marshmallows on!

If you want lots of creature comforts (shops, playgrounds etc) then this may not be the site for you but if like us you wanted to get back to what camping was like in the good old days then this is for you!

Just got back from an excellent weekend at Bowkerstead farm. The location is fantastic for exploring the forest / mtb biking. The site has a stream and small rocky outcrops for kids to play. Everyone pitches around the edge of the field leaving a very large space for families to play.
It's the first campsite I've been to where small fires are allowed next to your tent which really add to the camping experience, however on the first night we noticed there were several large groups playing loud music and some very lively 'merryment' going on, which, in the early evening was no problem at all but by 3am it was wearing a little thin! The second night slightly better with an early 1.30am Finish! Of course this could be a one-off and not the normal thing.
I will definitely be going back as the pro's do outweigh the cons but one men's and two women's toilets is woefully inadequate for a site of this size, I saw queues. Big queues, not quite as bad as a 'next' sale but it might feel like it if you're in a hurry. Never got chance to try out pony trekking at £10 but will next time. Prices very reasonable at £6 adult £2.50 child.
A big tip, Make sure you book a table early if you want to eat at eagles head, we left it late and missed out.

I had never been camping before and I went with my friends. I had no idea what to expect. When I arrived we were greeted by the owner who was a very friendly man. We pitched out tent and set up camp. The atmosphere around the campsite was brilliant and everyone was so friendly.
I was really pleased that we could have a camp fire. The prices for the stay and wood was very reasonable. The facilities were clean and tidy too. I had such a good time I did not want to leave. I am looking at going back in July with my boyfriend for two nights this time.

We had such a great time on our last camping trip here that we are going again next week.

I love how this place is a traditional campsite. None of this extra charges for the showers, extra charges for the dog, silly rules that make it boring. It was just a what you see is what you get trip. It is a nice quiet camp site / working farm with stables attached. We pitched up in the wooded area in 2007 which from the website appears to be where Aurthur has put the new pods.
It was really nice and quiet up there and you could have hours of fun exploring the forest and wooded area. The showers were always clean and Arthur was there visiting your tent every morning and evening to make sure you were happy and had everything you needed. He even offered to make bacon buttys for a small fee in the mornings.
Campfires were not only allowed but he also sold you firewood if you needed it (this really added to the whole camping experience). He even let my boyfriend borrow his bike when he lost me and my friend half way around grizedale forest when his bike broke.

If this place was to stay the same for the next 30 years I would be delighted, especially since other places are so much more expensive and a lot more crowded.

Looking forward to next week and hoping the dog behaves himself :s

We stayed in our tent over the Easter holiday. Arrived after booking online and met Arthur who showed us to a nice pitch over by the road with it's own campfire ring. Arthur is a gently spoken hard working man, very pleasant. It was very boggy however, and a car entering the site by our tent became stuck and had to be towed out by Arthur a few hours later. Once the rain stopped, it became great.
There were quite a few groups there, one large group in the centre who were really quiet despite having lots of kids. Two of the men from this group saw me struggling to put the tent up with only a child and came over to help - very nice of them.

The site is lovely, I have been to some breathtaking ones lately but for scenery and the feeling of being remote, this is the best. Very cheap at only £8 for an adult and a child. My friend came to visit us and she paid extra to stay in our tent.

Pros

Gorgeous location, lovely walks to the Visitor centre 1.5 miles away. This has a great big new kids playground, bike hire, Go Ape centre and lovely restaurant / coffee shop with big new leather sofas and views.

Cons

As reported, lack of loos and showers, so long wait for these.

He has sites for smaller tents up in the hills and lovely to see the fires at night up there.

I imagine it would be very busy in summer so may not go back until Autumn but will definitely be going back there this year if only to complete the Go Ape course and have some more cake at the Visitors Centre!

Just returned from our second visit here, stayed for three nights Thursday to Sunday and will definitely be going back to stay for longer later on in the summer. It is just the most relaxing and peaceful campsite we've been to, even on the last weekend of half-term with beautiful weather and a lot of people staying it didn't lose that feeling.
The facilities are basic but clean - 2 toilets and showers for women and the same for men plus a washing-up room with one sink,so on a very busy weekend you would expect to queue at busy times of the day. However, through the week, even in the school holidays,we've never had to queue.
There is a stream and a shallow river running around the campsite which are both great for cooling down in the sun and for keeping children amused with fishing nets and buckets. There is a riding centre based at the farm which offers lessons and trekking for beginners to experienced riders. All of this and you can have your own campfire right outside your tent-it doesn't get much better than this!
