What a totally fantastic campsite! We only spent a couple of nights here but it was lovely! The farmer is really helpful and friendly, only wanted paying at the end of our stay. The facilities are basic but immaculately maintained (free showers, lots of hot water). And you can have campfires, the farmer even brings the wood round to you. My little boy loved it, he's only 20months but spent his time there running round the field with the other children camping there.
Nice pub close by, doing posh pub grub, but you must book as it gets very busy.
You are only 0.5mile from the Grizedale visitors centre so a perfect place to cycle or walk from. It's also not far from Coniston.
It's such a great place, I can't wait to go back.

I agree with much of what previous posters have said and the great things about this site are the location, flat pitches, the campfires (wood sold each evening) and the facilities - best showers I think I've seen.
But I would stress that this is one of the few sites that takes large groups (families and same sex groups, young people etc)and this does have an impact. When we stayed the site was full and tents were pretty snug. At peak times its a loud and lively site. So if you are looking for quiet bird twittering beer/wine sipping evening, its not going to be here, least not at peak times. Its very much a live and let live atmosphere - sometimes till the early hours!
Having said that I couldn't fault the facilities and would deff go back - maybe out of season though.

Just got back from a quick weekend in the Lakes and wanted to write a few words about this site. Bowkerstead Farm was a real treat! Located on the outskirts of the beautifully Hobbiton-esque Satterthwaite, Bowkerstead is a working farm surrounded by lush woodland, rolling hills and stunningly pretty streams. We (my partner and I) booked in advance and this turned out to be a good idea because the site was full when we arrived - although we had no problem with space. We got a nice warm welcome from our host (you'll have no problem spotting him, he will be the one on the quadbike!) who made us feel instantly at home and relaxed - indeed, the relaxed atmosphere was a constant and refreshing theme.
All our fellow campers were taking full advantage of the permission to have camp fires, and the hazy summer air mixed with the inviting smell of woodsmoke added to the charm greatly.
I would say that if, like us, you visit the site in the middle of peak season, then it is a tremendous place to take the kids or a big group of friends with you - there is a real communal and playful atmosphere, but if you are on your own or just with your partner and looking for peace and quiet then you might not find exactly what you are looking for - this isn't a gripe (I could not fault the place), just an observation.
The facilities were basic but very well maintained and clean. The pub in Satterthwaite is a short walk (or crawl!) away and is very rustic and pretty. You will also find that a short walk will get you into Grizedale forest and on to the cycle/foot paths.
Among the other memories that will live with us for some time: spotting the biggest heron I've ever seen in my life in the next field and watching Arthur (your host) and his sheep dog at work with the sheep (they came right through the main field of the site) You will have seen this plenty of times on the TV, but up close in real life is just amazing! That dog was just incredible to watch.
Thanks very much to Arthur. 10/10. Keep up the good work! We'll no doubt see you again in the future.

We stayed here for 4 nights (Sunday to Wednesday) and found ourselves one of max 5 tents on site.
One of the best sites we have ever stayed at - flat pitch, open fires allowed, clean showers/toilets, washing up facilities. The owner is just the most helpful person, he was keen to make sure everyone was happy and provided for.
We went mountain biking for 4 days in a row, straight from the site by linking into the excellent bridle paths in the area.
Our only downside was the local pub, which served awful food at over inflated prices - although having read other reviews of that pub, we may have just caught them on a bad night!
We had a guided tour of the camping 'pods' that are available (wooden tents) and will definitely be giving those a try in the winter.

Me, my wife and a few friends stayed here for one night, and wished it was more.
We will be going back soon, that is for sure!
Facilities are excellent, Arthur (and his quadbike!) is very friendly and helpful, and the surroundings are great. Pub is five minutes away and has some fine local ales, and there's some nice little trails to walk around going just past the campsite's entrance.
Two areas to this site; the lower area is a flat open space, ideal for families or larger parties, and the higher area is a little more rugged, surrounded by trees. The higher area is where we stayed, and it was nice sat around a real camp fire (a rare treat in this health-and-safety world) surrounded by wildlife and wood.

My husband and I had not been camping for several years. We decided to purchace a new tent and hit the road, we came across this campsite and what a treasure it is. The farmer (Arthur) went out of his way to make us welcome and make sure we settled in ok. He delivered firewood to our tent so we could have a real camp fire, how romantic just the two of us a nice bottle of wine and the glow of a real fire. The toilets and showers were spotless and it was fun crossing the little brook to walk up the track to the farm and the showers (there is a lane up to the farm too). 10/10 to Bowkerstead Farm we cant wait to go back for another weekend I am hoping to take my parents next time, my mum is semi disabled but the facilities are so good I know there will be no problem at all. Keep it up Arthur you are one top guy !

I endorse all previous reviews - a group of friends and I have just returned from spending the weekend at Grizedale and had a fantastic time.
The location is excellent, the views stunning, the facilities well maintained and spotlessly clean.
In addition, the fact that campfires are allowed really adds to the experience.
Finally, Arthur (the farmer who owns the site), goes out of his way to make sure everyone has everything they need and even brings (free!) firewood to everyone each evening.
In summary, I'd rank Grizedale as the number one campsite that I've visited and will certainly be returning.

Just returned from a wet weekend at Grizedale and although the weather was foul we were welcolmed warmly and without fuss. There was plenty of room for all even though the site was quite busy. There were no rigid pitches and as we were in a large group we formed a circle. The site did get waterlogged in places but drained quickly. The showers and toilets are in good repair and clean albeit a bit away from the field as is the water supply. There is no designated elsan point but the owner assisted by giving access to a drain into his cess pit and laid on water from a hosepipe (this may put some off but was a pefectly adequate solution for us). Although the picture I have painted may seem a little grim, the weather was a big downer and we would happily revisit.

One of the best sites I have ever been to. Infact so good I was thinking of not putting it on here so it didn't get to busy ( but that wouldn't be fair on Arthur). As most have said a fantastic laid back site. Owned by a true gent, who deserves much praise for his attitude and all round trusting nature and friendliness. It had been raining during the week before we arrived for a long weekend. As a result Arthur told us he wouldn't be allowing to many on as he didn't want the field to get spoilt for those there for the weekend and for future campers (we were on the main field). This was the first place we'd been to where you could have an open fire which we loved as it was pretty cold and all huddling around the fire with a beer and chatting only enhanced the experience. The toilet/ showers/ dishwashing etc were well maintained and clean. With a constant supply of hot water. It was perfectly located with a nice pub within walking distance, and a short car ride for the Langdales etc.
Will be definitely be going back this year with our mountain bikes and hitting Grizedale Forest for some mud and fun, the sooner the better.

What a wonderful site. The farmer was very friendly and made sure we had a comfortable pitch with plenty of room for all of us (4 tents in total), he was also incrediably trusting - insiting that we didn't pay until we left. The location was stunning with plenty of places to go off for a bike ride. It was nice to be allowed an open fire and have a laid back weekend. The facilities were basic but clean and in excellent condition. This is one that we are definitely coming back to.
